 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Les   dessins-.:en   annexe illustrent plusieurs exemples complets de réalisations physiques de   linvention   construites suivant les procédés les meilleurs connus jusqu'à présent pour   Inapplication   pratique des principes énoncés,' et sur lesquels la figure 1 est une vue en coupe schématique, verticale   d'un   générateur de vepeur réalisant les principes de cette invention- la figure 2 est une vue en coupe transversale du générateur pri- se suivant le plan'de la ligne 2-2 de la figure 1; la figure 3 est une vue schématique semblable à la figure 1 mais représentant une autre réalisation de l'invention; la figure 4 est une vue schématique représentant encore une autre réalisation de l'invention;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR REGULARIZING AND IMPROVING CIRCULATION
IN STEAM GENERATORS.

   The invention relates to steam generators and relates more particularly to steam generators of the water tube type.

   Steam generators in which the water from the boiler circulates through tubes by a so-called natural circulation, produced by the difference in density between cold water and hot water, have certain drawbacks. In the first place, a large space is necessary for the natural circulation tubes especially for the parts of the boiler in which the heat is transmitted to the tubes mainly by convention.

   In general, there is a suitable space for the natural circulation tubes in the combustion chamber of the generator, which in any case requires a certain volume, determined mainly by the heating method used and by the properties of the gas. fuel used.

  Excessively large batteries of tubes are necessary in the parts of the boiler located outside the combustion chamber or furnace, in particular for the convection surfaces located on the waste gas line from the top of the furnace.

   In some steam generators using tubes with natural circulation in the combustion chamber, these convection surfaces have been constructed with a view to forced circulation so as to significantly reduce the space required for the heating surfaces by convection.

   However, steam generators using natural circulation

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Turelle water from the boilers in the tubes of the walls of the furnace, have another drawback, which consists in that the circulation of water in these tubes is irregular during the firing periods. As a result, the water may be relatively cold in some tubes while there is a large production of steam in other tubes.

   This irregular circulation made it necessary to extend the start-up period of the generator over a relatively long period to avoid the risk of damaging the steam boiler for any one of different causes, mainly due to the heat stresses which can occur in the tubes and their fittings.

  In the case of large boiler installations, this long start-up period is usually a great disadvantage because it can last several hours, and, moreover, it is desirable to reduce this time as much as possible.

   Likewise, unless boilers of the natural circulation type are constructed with great care, it frequently happens that some tubes receive an abundance of water flowing through them, while others are. inert. Inert tubes, moreover, have a tendency to overheat and rupture.

   Therefore, the object of the present invention is to find a solution to the above problem. This object is achieved by creating a steam generator of the natural and forced combined circulation type, in which the furnace tubes or the water walls, as they are called, are constructed for the natural circulation. , while a pump is used to circulate the water through the convection surfaces on the outside of the oven. As a result, the convection surfaces can have considerably reduced dimensions to achieve one of the objects of the invention.

   More particularly, an object of the invention is to provide a method of operating a steam generator of the character described which eliminates the need for long periods of operation arising from the irregular circulation in the tubes of the steam generator. oven. According to this process, part of the water leaving the pump which feeds the convection tubes is diverted into the tubes of the furnace to improve and increase the circulation of water in these tubes and to ensure that the water or more evenly distributed in the tubes of the furnace, in proportion to their needs.

   In this way, the temperature of the water in the tubes of the combustion chamber and also the temperature of the walls of these tubes is more uniform over the whole extent of the furnace, and heat stresses or concentrations can be avoided. local heat which results in rupture of the tube. In addition, when the need for the increase in the natural circulation of water through the tubes of the furnace has ceased, for example when the boiler is working under a constant normal load, the diversion of water from the pump to the tubes of. The oven can be stopped so that only the forced circulation convection tubes are supplied by the pump.

   An object of the invention is also to create a steam-generating apparatus provided with a circulation system designed so as to allow water to circulate through the tubes of the furnace either by natural circulation or by a combination of natural and forced circulation.

   Another object of the invention is still to create a steam generator provided with furnace tubes constructed to pass therein the natural circulation of water from the boiler, and with tubes comprising the convection surfaces constructed for the circulation. forced by means of a pump, and in which the water from the pump boiler can be passed either in the tubes comprising the convection surfaces alone or in these surfaces and also in the natural circulation tubes of the furnace in order to improve the circulation of water therein.

   Having these and other objects in view, which will become apparent during the description., The invention consists of the new methods and apparatus described below and more particularly defined in the appended claims, being of course that certain modifications to the precise embodiment as described below can be made as long as they fall within the scope of the claims.

   The accompanying drawings illustrate several complete examples of physical embodiments of the invention constructed according to the best known methods hitherto for the practical application of the principles set forth, and in which Figure 1 is a schematic, vertical sectional view of the invention. A steam generator embodying the principles of this invention FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the generator taken along the plane of line 2-2 of FIG. 1; FIG. 3 is a schematic view similar to FIG. 1 but showing another embodiment of the invention; Fig. 4 is a schematic view showing yet another embodiment of the invention;

   Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed sectional view showing one way of forced injection of water into the inlet pipes to improve the circulation of water through the tubes of the furnace; Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5, but showing another way of improving the circulation of water through the tubes of the furnace., and Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing in - another way to improve the circulation of water through the furnace tubes.

   Referring now particularly to the accompanying drawings in which the same numerals represent the same parts in all the different views; and in particular in Figures 1 and 2, the numeral 5 generally designates the furnace or the combustion chamber of a steam generation installation. The installation comprises the ordinary steam dome 6 placed near the top of the appliance, and a waste gas line 7 communicating with the top of the combustion chamber and terminating downwards outside the furnace to be connected. to a fireplace (not shown).

   The generator is provided with batteries of tubes 8, 9, 10 and 11 in the combustion chamber arranged vertically in this chamber to form the usual water wall of the furnace. These tubes are constructed primarily for the natural circulation of the boiler water and, for this purpose, the banks of tubes 8, 9, 10 and 11 are provided with inlet tubes 12, 13, respectively. 14 and 15, one for each battery of tubes., And connected at their lower ends. The adjacent ends of these pipes communicate with each other by fittings 17 of slightly smaller diameter than the pipes.

   Water from the steam dome boiler 6 is led into the pipes by means of two down pipes 16, the lower ends of which connect to the fittings 17 at the opposite ends of the inlet pipe 12.

  The upper ends of the furnace tubes are moreover connected to the steam dome 6 in the ordinary manner so that the steam or the water-steam emulsion will produce in the furnace tubes can rise vertically through these tubes and emerge. in the steam dome. The tubes 8, 9, 10 and 11 being placed directly in the combustion chamber, the heat is transmitted to these tubes mainly by radiation.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   The steam generator of the present invention is also provided with tubes forming one or more heating surfaces by convection such as the surface indicated at 19 and placed on the path 7 of the waste gases outside the furnace, to remove as much heat as possible from the waste gases leaving the oven.

   According to the present invention, the dimensions of the convection heating surface 19 can be significantly reduced by the forced circulation of boiler water through these surfaces. For this purpose, a circulation pump 20 is used, the inlet of which is connected to the lower part of the steam dome by a descending tube 21 so as to communicate with the water space of the dome, and of which the outlet communicates with the inlet pipe 22 of the convection tubes or the heating surface 19 by means of a pipe 23. It is thus possible to force water from the boiler into the convection tubes 19 and the steam is conducted or the water-vapor emulsion produced in these tubes in the vapor dome in the usual way.

   If the furnace tubes 8, 9, 10 and 11 receive only natural circulation of boiler water while the tubes of the convection surface 19 receive forced circulation water, as has been done in some cases , the duration of the operation of the generator is quite critical., and must be extended over several hours to avoid localized concentrations of heat in different parts of the tubes of the furnace which could lead to these tubes being consumed or broken. other.

  These heat concentrations occur because of the irregular flow of boiler water through the furnace tubes, and it is often possible that some of these tubes receive an abundant supply of boiler water. while others receive virtually no circulation.

   This is, moreover, a great disadvantage, since it is impossible to keep the furnace tubes at any somewhat uniform temperature, and the heat stresses which occur in the tube and in their connections can easily lead to damage. seriously to the generator.

   According to the present invention, the circulation pump 20 is used which produces the forced circulation of the boiler water in the convection tubes 19 in the waste gas line 7, to improve the circulation of the water from the boiler. boiler through the furnace tubes during the start-up period, or at any other time desired.

   For this purpose, the inlet tubes 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the tubes of the furnace are brought into communication with the outlet of the circulation pump 20 by means of a pipe 24 adapted to the pipe 23 terminating at the outlet. convection surface, and branch pipes 25 coming from pipe 24 and terminating at each of the inlet pipes. One of these branch pipes extends into each fitting 17, and as seen in FIG. Figure 5, has a nozzle 26 at its end 1-inside of the directed fitting so as to discharge at the end of the neighboring inlet pipe.

   The discharge end of each nozzle is preferably placed in the small diameter end of a portion 27 'of the fitting which diverges towards the adjacent end of the tubing. Consequently, the boiler water discharging by forced circulation from the nozzle 26 into the larger diameter tubing thus produces an injection action promoting the flow of boiler water through the fitting and into the tubing to increase the flow therein. pressure to a value somewhat higher than that due to the static column alone.

   One of these nozzles 26 is provided for each of the pipes, and the nozzles can induce the circulation of water. counterclockwise in the tubing as seen in Figure 2.

  As a result of this forced injection of boiler water into the inlet pipes during the start-up period, the pressure in the pipes increases and, the circulation of the boiler water upwards through the pipes. oven is greatly improved and enough to exclude

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 harmful concentrations of heat and stresses in certain tubes which have heretofore caused damage to the tubes or their connections, or even rupture of the tubes.

   In fact the circulation through the tubes of the furnace is improved to such an extent that one can maintain substantially uniform temperatures in these tubes and that the running time of the generator can be materially reduced without danger of producing damage to the installation.

   After the start-up period, and when the boiler is operating under constant normal load, the forced injection of boiler water into the inlet pipes can be stopped by closing a valve 28 in line 24 to allow; furnace tube to operate in natural circulation. Although the valve 28 is closed, the circulation pump 20 however continues to produce forced boiler water circulation in the convection tubes 19 on the waste gas path 7.

   If desired, even better circulation of the boiler skin through the furnace tubes during the start-up period can be obtained by extending the branch lines longitudinally through the interior of the tubes, as described above. seen at 30 in FIG. 6)) and connecting the nozzles 31 to the extensions 30 in the axis of the inlet end of each furnace tube so that the nozzles enter there a short distance.

   Therefore, one can forcibly inject boiler water into each of the tubes of the furnace to greatly increase the normal flow of water from the tubes into these tubes.
Figure 3 illustrates another embodiment of the invention, and further provides as much protection as possible to the pump by minimizing the possibility of vapor entrainment in the pump.

  In this embodiment of the invention, the circulation pump 20 is placed directly below the inlet pipe 12 and the pump is connected centrally to this pipe and thus to the descending tube 16 by means of a tube vertical 33. Therefore, since the distribution pipe 12 always contains water, \) it maintains a good supply of water to the pump and the pressure at the inlet of the pump is therefore slightly higher than that obtained in the remainder. of the natural circulation system.

   This is, moreover, desirable, since the possibility of the boiler water in the vicinity of the pump inlet being suddenly transformed into steam during any sudden demand from the generator is minimized. tending to abruptly reduce the pressure in the system.

   As in the previous embodiment, however, the outlet of the pump is connected both to line 24 terminating at the inlet tubes of the furnace tubes and to line 23 terminating at the inlet tube 22 of the tubes. convection with forced circulation. Likewise, the valve 28 is used in the pipe 24 to regulate the injection of boiler water into the inlet tubes of the furnace tubes.

   In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the pump 20 is used only for the forced circulation of boiler water in the convection tubes 19 in the waste gas line 7, and a second pump 20 'is used to improve the circulation of the boiler water. water through the oven tubes. In this case, the down tubes 16 terminate in the pipes passing through a control valve 35, and the inlet of the pump 20 'is supplied with water from one of the vertical pipes through a branch. 36 coming from it and containing a closing valve 37.

   The outlet of the pump 20 'is moreover connected to the inlet tubes of the furnace tubes in the same manner described previously, except that the shut-off valve 28 is placed very close to the outlet of the pump to close. communication between it and all branch lines 25.

   This arrangement of shut-off valves 28 and 37 allows the pump to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 eg 20 'to walk to improve the circulation of water through the furnace tubes when these valves are open, or to allow only the natural circulation of water through the furnace tubes when the pump is switched off by the closing of the valves 28 and 37. It should be noted, moreover, that this mode of adjusting the pump is only representative and that in practice =, ', the pump 20' can be controlled by an electric motor or the like, which can be adjusted at will.

   The advantages of the invention are also obtained by the modification shown in Figure 7 in which the down pipes 16 of the furnace tubes are connected to the middle parts of two opposite inlet pipes 13 and 15. In this case, each of the conduits 24 which communicates with the outlet of the pump via the closing valve 28, carries only one branch 25 'which terminates through the descending tube 16 at its connection to the neighboring inlet tube in order to enter at inside the tubing.

    The end of the branch 25 'in the tubing carries an injection nozzle 40 pointing in the opposite direction along the axis of the tubing so as to produce a forced injection of water towards the opposite ends of the fuel tubing. - improve the flow of water from the descending tube and the circulation of water through the tubes of the furnace. The nozzles 40 also exert their influence in the remaining pipes 12 and 14 as well, since all the pipes communicate with one another via the connectors 17.

   It is readily apparent from the preceding description, considered together with. the accompanying drawings, to those skilled in the art, that this invention provides a simple and highly effective means of improving the circulation through the tubes of natural circulation furnaces of a steam generator not only to protect the tubes from heat. ovens against damage but to reduce in a material and safe way the duration of the operation of the generator.
