<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

TRAINING DEVICE FOR A CINEMATOGRAPHIC FILM.,
The object of the present invention is a device for driving a film, cinematographic or other, passing, guided to form a series of successive helical loops, for example, on a series of driving drums arranged on a. common tree., each turn passing over one of these drums.
@
This device is in particular designed for the automatic loading and feeding of the film in the developing machines in which the film is processed in channels forming helical loops in which the processing liquids or the drying air circulate. , these channels being either 'formed by turns of tubes interrupted upwards or formed, also interrupted upwards, in a block, the outlet of a channel turn facing the entry of the next turn and a drive drum being disposed in the vertical plane of these orifices.
In the known devices, the drive drums all rotate at the exact speed of the shaft which carries them and, for example, we play on the drive inequalities which occur by varying the diameter of the drums, both at the introduction of the film that during its processing. The film goes dry, it is wet and then dried, this creates changes in length, friction ...
The film first enters each of the turns formed by the drum preceding it. Its end being free, the film tends to be applied towards the outside in the channel and to bear, by pressing its emulsified face, on the guide walls, this results in increased braking, risks of jamming and damage to the movie,,
The devices allowing 12 variable adhesion of the film on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Drive drums are delicate to operate and slippage on these drums may damage the film.
The device that is the subject of the present invention obviates these drawbacks by automatically catching up the lengthening of the film loop in each turn, when the beginning of the film is running in the latter, while preventing the latter from any abnormal traction and carrying out its absolutely automatic positioning. No special maneuver or preparation is necessary, other than that, common with existing devices, of preceding the film to be treated with a non-gelatinized film leader in order to avoid it jamming.
The length of this leader can be reduced to less than two turn lengths, the catching up of the drive, substituting traction for compression for the film, being done very quickly as soon as the free end has passed over a drum, from the second,
In this device, the film is driven by constant adhesion on driving drums mounted on a common shaft, but each drum is capable of angular sliding on this shaft.
As soon as the resistive torque produced by the traction of the film reaches the value for which the friction drive of each drum mounted on the motor shaft is set, the angular speed of the drum falls below the angular speed of the shaft On the other hand, the film is braked relative to the first drum which forces the first drum to always rotate at an angular speed lower than that of the motor shaft.
Such a device is shown in the appended figures, given by way of example, in order to better understand the invention applied to a machine to be developed by passing the film through shaped tube turns which ensure the guidance of the tube. film and circulation of processing fluids.
In these figures
FIG. 1 is a diagram showing in perspective a partial view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are schematic elevations transverse to the axis of the film drive drums, with section of the coil channeling the film.
Figure 2 shows the loading of the coil by the film leader and Figure 3 shows the film properly stretched as soon as the film is drawn on two consecutive drums.
FIG. 4 shows in horizontal elevation and in section an exemplary embodiment of two of the driving drums and of the backing rollers pressing the film on said drums.
Figure 5 is a cutaway sectional elevation taken transversely to the axis of one of the preceding drums.
In these figures, the same parts are designated by the same references.
The film 1, which has previously been provided with a leader 1 of suitable length, in non-emulsified film, preferably at the rounded end 2, to facilitate its passage by pushing through the tubes, is debited from the reel. 3 on which it is rolled up.
For this, the film is driven, for example, by a toothed debtor 4, the teeth of which mesh with the perforations 5 of the film and its leader.
This film is brought, by guide means (not shown), provided in the frame of the developer, to pass over the first drum 6a of the machine.

china, in contact with it by its non-emulsified face.
The drum 6a corresponds to 1-entry 7a of the first coil-tube 8a, the exit 9a of which corresponds to a drum 6b in front of 1-entry 7b of the next coil-tube 8b and so on .... . 6c, 6d .... 7c, 7d, ..... 8c, 8d ........
The drums 6a, 6b '..... 6n are mounted, with the interposition of friction devices shown schematically at 11a, 11b, il 0 ....... on a common shaft 12 set in rotation, for example by the motor 13, the axis 14 of which drives the feed roller. 4 and a pulley 15 wedged on it by means of a belt 16 passing over a pulley 17 wedged on the shaft 12.
The radii of the various elements 4, 15, 17 and of the outer part 18 of the various drums 6a, 6b ...... driving the film are such that the circumferential speed Ua of the peripheries 18 of the drums 6, when they rotate without sliding at the angular speed of the shaft 12, is greater than the linear speed u of the film driven by the feeder 4.
The contact surfaces 18 of the drums 6 with the film have a nature such that the film adheres thereto, being supported by two marginal bands for example, by means of rollers 19 carried on shafts 21, parallel to 12, and free of turn guided in the frame of the machine to press towards each edge 18 on the different drums 6.
In fig 1, only a shaft fragment 21 and two rollers 19 carried by it are shown.
From the point of view of the adhesion alone of the film 1 of 18, a single line of rollers 19 would suffice.
In reality, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 5, it is necessary to have three lines of shafts 21 and rollers 19 so that the end 2 of 1-'1 starts 1' continuing its path at the exit 9 of each tube is automatically seized by coming into abutment between the roller 19 and the surface 18, continues to be so between 19 and 18 then abandons 18 at the point of contact of the third roller 19b where the tangential direction followed by the ,, film causes it to enter without further guidance into the opening 7 of the corresponding tube
The three axes 21, 21a, 21b are free to descend under their weight in guides of the frame of the machine, for example,
and the freely rotating rollers 19 driven by the film which they press on 18 by their suitably chamfered end parts 22 (fig 4).
The rollers 19 must, theoretically., Be able to rotate freely on their axis 21 so as to avoid any sliding of the surfaces 22 on the film,
In practice, the operation can be satisfactory with rollers 19 integral in rotation with their shaft 21, and acting simultaneously on two consecutive turns as shown in FIG. 4.
The rotation of their common axis 21 is of course ;, always kept free and follows the average speed u of the film driving all of these rollers secured to each other. Slippages which could be troublesome., Due to the difference between u and U, exist only when the machine is packed with the film and only appear on the leader of the non-emulsified film, which does not present any drawback. Slippages due to variations in the length of the film in course of treatment dealing only with variations of u # @ always very small.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The drive drums on the outer surfaces 18 where the film adheres. 1 are constituted, in the example shown., As follows
A fairly flexible rubber liner 23 in the form of a cylindrical ring having substantially the width of the film is fixed by inserting a middle rib 24 into the groove 25 of a disc 26 of suitable material, such as molded material or ebonite for example. , pierced by a concentric bore 27 which can rotate freely on the cylindrical part 28-of a hub 29 fixed coaxially on the axis 12. and made integral with it for example by means of a leek screw 31.
The disc 26 is narrower than the lining 23 so that the edges of its outer cylindrical surface 18 give way slightly under the edges of the film 1 under the pressure of the chamfers 22 of the rollers 19.
The rubber being suitably chosen, the adhesion of the film 1 is complete on the drive belt 18.
The friction drive of 18, mounted on 26, by the axis 12 and the hub 29 which is integral with it, is produced as follows:
On each face of 26 are applied felt washers, for example, 32 and 33.
The washer 32 is pressed between the face 34 of 26 and a washer 35, made of stainless steel for example, threaded on 28, bearing on a collar 36 ending 28 at one end of the hub 29. The washer 30 cannot turn on 29 thanks to a lug 37, cut out projecting in its central hole, which takes place in a longitudinal groove 38 formed in the length of the hub 29. On the other face 41 of 26 is placed a second felt washer 33 which presses a washer 42 with lug 43, similar to 25, which transmits to all the washers and felts by pressing them against the disc 26, the pressure of a spring,
here a hollow rubber ring 44 pressed by a flange 45. An adjusting nut washer 46, provided for example with crenellations 47 to receive a tightening key, allows, by screwing onto a threaded part 48 of the hub 29, the compression of the ring 44 and that of the felts 32 and 33 between the faces of 26 and the washers 35 and 42 integral in rotation with the axis 12.
To prevent unscrewing at 46, between 45 and 46 is interposed a washer 49 with lug 51, similar to washers 35 and 42, but deformed to spring and carrying stamped reliefs 52 which can penetrate into corresponding holes 53 of 46 to prevent it. accidental rotation.
It is thus possible to adjust the driving torque of the surface 18 adhering to the film 1, to a suitable maximum.
As the felt has practically a constant coefficient of friction, dry and wet, this adjustment will persist in operation.
The operation of such a device is then as follows: When the leader (1 ') driving the film is engaged on the drum 6 it adheres to it and, as the peripheral speed u of the debtor 4 is lower than that U qu 'on the drums 6 when they do not slide on their drives 11, this drum 6 is braked and it is only at linear speed u that the is pushed into the first tube 8 a (fig. 2). .
This film then takes the form shown and its end tends to press towards the outside of the tube
When the end 2, guided by the rollers 19 is grasped and adhered
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
re the following drum 6b, the latter at a peripheral speed U> u.
For a short time, the film debited by 6a at speed u is drawn by 6b at speed U which 6b then retains. But as the result is that the film is stretched between 6a and 6b, it is applied towards the center of the tube in the normal guiding position. This results in braking, the film playing the role of the rope of a rope brake, in which the drum is stationary.
This braking then forces the drum 6b to slide on its hub 11b and the film is sent by it., At the flow rate u in 8b where the same phenomena occur until the film arrives on 6c and so on. - te until all the drums are lined with film adhering to them and moving uniformly at speed U.
We see that the positioning and movement of the film will be automatically ensured.
The film, except for the head coil, at the time of loading, is constantly drawn back towards the center of the tube, on the guide parts, and this by a tension constantly equal to the tension which forces each drum to have only the peripheral speed u instead of that U that it would have if it were driven, by the shaft 12, without slip.
It is likewise conceived that if, for any reason whatsoever, a local elongation occurs. In one turn, the following drum will have its slip reduced and, rotating more quickly, will absorb the slack which, transmitted from drum to drum will be absorbed on full length.
Local braking, on the contrary, will bring braking of the following elements in series, but slack in the previous part will bring about a relaxation which will gain from drum to drum and will be absorbed as it goes.
The average rate will be established constantly and automatically, without the tension of the film between drums being able to exceed the tension which makes slip the most braked drum.
The individual adjustments of the drums allow these forces to be fixed at the appropriate value for correct traction and guiding of the film.
In the embodiment shown by way of example, the application of the device is made to a developing machine, guiding the film helically in circular or substantially circular tubes.
It is obvious that this mode of training is applicable whatever the way in which the loops are guided, on the sole condition that the tightening of a loop, by the tension of the film, is limited, and forces the film to be braked in each loop by the tension of the film on exiting, without this increase in tension having any effect on the drum preceding said loop.
The devices for frictionally driving the drums by the axis may vary without departing from the invention.
The mode of driving the drums can even be completely independent of that of the debtor and be common for all the drums or individual for each of them.
The positive drive film flow mode by means of a toothed inducer, as described, can be replaced, among other means, by
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the only braked traction of the first drum, without departing from 1-'invention.
This essentially consists of a device for driving the film by means of drums on which it adheres, these drums being on the contrary driven by drives which can slide on their axes as soon as the traction of the film reaches a certain value, and to brake the film in front of the pre-drum, to cause the sliding on its axis of this first drum - while between two consecutive drums a device brakes the film on a fixed part, preventing the traction of the upstream drum to act on the upstream drum, this braking being caused by the increase in traction between this fixed part and the drum following it, either by a winding effect or by any other means.
