<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

CURRENT CONTROL DEVICES, MORE SPECIFICALLY CONTROLLED CIRCUIT BREAKERS
BY CURRENT PULSES.
The object of the present invention is the improvement of the device of the principle described in the main patent? ....... aiming in particular at the development of a new thermal delay relay as well as of the device of. execution of 1-device in the form of a removable cartridge with interchangeable relays.
Figures 1 to 4 show the various points of improvement, Figure 1 being the longitudinal section of the apparatus; Figure 2 the cross section on plane 1- 1; Figure 3 a plan view, Figure 4 a complete perspective view; FIG. 5 the detail of the thermal relay; FIG. 6 a diagram of the connections of a single-pole current pulse circuit breaker with instantaneous electro-magnetic tripping and thermal delay,
The monopolar apparatus, the principle of which has been described in the main patent, consists of the coil of the electromagnet 1 with its core 2; the coil can be powered either by the mains current, or by the very low voltage current.
The oscillating core 2 is linked by an elastic blade or toggle 28 made up of two elements pivoting about 19 axis 4 and supported by their ends 5.6 on the springs 7, 8.
The resistor Rv with a large positive coefficient is dimensioned in such a way that it heats up in a time of 1? Of the order of a few hundredths of a second at a temperature increasing 5 to 7 times its ohmic value o The resistance can then be replaced by an incandescent lamp with wolfram filament.
The heating-up time of the resistance Rv is calculated according to the time required to move the knee switch 4 below neutral, that is to say to give the mechanical system sufficient impetus to move into the engaged position.

The diagram in figure 6 shows the connections of the device.
The instantaneous electromagnetic tripping is effected by the maxima electromagnet 19 attracting the core 2 and thus opening the movable contacts 9. The thermal delay necessary for tripping under a slow overload is obtained by a new control system. relay shown in figure 4.
The relay principle according to the object of the invention is based on the electro-chemical properties of certain salts being in the crystal state of perfect insulators, on the other hand becoming conductive in the dondua state.
There are several kinds of salts which melt between 65 and 110 centigrade (silver nitrate, etc ...).
The relay is composed of a glass cartridge 20 in which are housed two flat electrodes and the salts 24 having the above-mentioned characteristics.
For higher voltages the two electrodes are connected, according to the object of the invention, by a resistance 25 high enough to pass a very low current, for example 1/10 Ampere.
The cartridge is enveloped by a heating conductor 23 (this conductor which can also be placed inside the cartridge) is traversed by the current to be checked at the moment when the relay is to be used to protect the devices against heating. exaggerated.
However, in normal service the internal resistance surrounded by crystals of the insulating salts, is entirely interposed in the auxiliary circuit.
When the cartridge is heated by the heating wire 23 through which the current to be controlled passes, the salts melt, thus becoming conductors and short-circuiting the turns of the resistor 23. The current flowing through the short-circuited resistor reaches its value necessary for operate the circuit-breaker tripping electromagnet as shown in the diagram figure 60
The same delay as that described above can always be used according to the object of the invention as a fire alarm operating either the device in which it is mounted., Or several relays being connected in sequence. parallel to act thus on the optical or acoustic warning device communo Obviously, in the last case,
the heating resistor is replaced by the heat developed by the increase in the ambient temperature
The current control device, more especially a circuit breaker controlled by the current pulses as described above, is housed in an insulating frame 18 with two ends 16, 17 in which are housed the relays T which can serve at the same time as a warning device. as well as the variable resistor executed in the form of Rvo lamps. The frame 18 is preferably cylindrical in shape and provided with two segments 14 and 15 for entering and leaving the main current and two segments 12 and 13 d input and output of the auxiliary current.
Said segments engage between the elastic jaws mounted on a fixed base and not shown in the figures.
Below the frame is fixed an auxiliary contact 30 touching the elastic contact mounted on a base and necessary as shown in the diagram in FIG. 6 for the supply of relay T
It can be seen that the complete device is designed as an easily interchangeable removable cartridge.
