<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
retassures.

CONTINUOUS ENDLESS METAL INGOT CASTING PROCESS AND INSTALLATION
FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PROCESS.
The present invention relates to a process for continuously casting endless metal ingots, in particular high melting point metals such as iron and steel. The invention relates, moreover, to an installation making it possible to carry out a preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention.
The subject of the invention is a method and an installation allowing the manufacture of an endless ingot, particularly dense, free from shrinkage, liquations or internal cracks.
According to an essential characteristic of the invention, this improvement in the qualities of the ingot is obtained by applying pressure to the ingot during solidification, and the invention is based on the fact that the ingot precisely offers the possibility of application of effective pressure, provided that the following procedure is carried out in accordance with the invention:
solidification of the liquid metal is caused in the marginal zone of the section of the ingot to be obtained, as close as possible to the pouring point of the molten metal. 7 until a sheath or crust is obtained. - fully closed, resistant and capable of being moved, the solidification of the inner liquid core of the ingot only taking place at a level below said pour point, where the liquid pressure is sufficient to effectively reduce the risk of developing ratas and / or liquations.
In continuous casting, it is necessary to maintain much more precise casting and cooling conditions than in the case of ordinary ingot casting. Experience shows that, under these condi- tions, the continuous ingot solidifies, in particular, in its core, in such a way that the surface of separation between the liquid material and the solid material is much more regular and that the the residual conical liquid core no longer exhibits any constrictions liable to split it by forming
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sink marks.
The process according to the invention consequently makes it possible to work with liquid columns of a height which would be far from being able to be envisaged in the casting of ordinary ingots, if only because of the danger. fissions of the liquid vein by formation of elements in the form of bridges ,. initiated by dendritic crystallizations.
The cooling of the solidified casing of the endless ingot and of its liquid core is preferably carried out in such a way that as large a section as possible is subjected to the action of the pressure of the liquid. It is therefore recommended to take from the ingot, in the mold, only a quantity of heat such as the equilibrium temperature which is established between the solidified envelope and the liquid inner core, after leaving the said mold. , or lower than the melting point of the metal.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the shape and the depth of the liquid core of the ingot after it has left the mold should only be determined by the influence of heat dissipation. For this purpose, there is preferably provided a conditioning chamber which can be filled with an inert gas.
It has been found that good results can be obtained with a local liquid pressure of at least one atmosphere (of overpressure.)
On the other hand, it has been observed that despite strict application of the measures described above, an endless ingot of steel, for example, can still exhibit axial internal cracks. Now, we have noticed the surprising fact that this phenomenon is to be attributed to the action of the bodies controlling the exit of the ingot. These generally consist in an installation for the continuous casting of endless ingots, by cylinders or clamping rollers the function of which is to slow down the fall of the heavy endless lipgot, taking into account the casting speed.
However, it has not been recognized, until now, that the irrational use of these rolls could have a considerable influence on the quality of the ingot, since the clamping pressure on both sides ingot in a plane normal to its axis results in crushing of the ingot and the appearance of internal cracks in said ingot which is still insufficiently solidified.
Consequently, according to another characteristic of the invention, the clamping pressure of the ingot outlet control members is only exerted in a plane where the ingot is sufficiently solidified, to withstand a pressure which, at lack of this solidification, would risk modifying its structure. This plane will, as a rule, be located below the tip of the liquid core. Since, during casting, with a very deep liquid core, the ingot does not usually have sufficient inherent rigidity to reach the aforementioned control members without buckling, it may be advisable to provide guidance. ingot without, however, exerting appreciable clamping pressure on said ingot.
In an installation intended for carrying out this particular embodiment of the method, according to the invention, there is provided an adjustment of the distance separating the aforementioned control members from the outlet end of the continuous casting mold. and there is also provided, where appropriate, ingot guide members in the form of idle rollers or the like.
The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows and on examining the appended drawings which represent, by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment of a continuous casting installation according to the invention. .
On these drawings:

installation intended for setting. implementation of the method according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of a defective endless ingot.
The liquid metal which flows from the pouring gutter 1 fed from a heating furnace or a pouring ladle (not shown) falls into the mold 2 open at both ends and cooled, using a water jacket. In this mold, the liquid metal is cooled suddenly enough so that a rigid closed envelope S forms extremely quickly around the residual liquid core S2, and to a considerable depth below the level S3 of the metal, the whole forming the endless ingot designated by the reference So The envelope Si which initiates solidification, must, after the ingot has emerged from the lower end of the continuous mold 2, present, at the various points along its length,
a predetermined thickness and be maintained at a determined temperature, as well as the liquid inner core S2. To this end, the endless ingot passes through a conditioning chamber 3 which is filled for example with hot air or another hot gas , (such as nitrogen or a similar inert gas), or also, optionally, steam. Chamber 3 is only shown in schematic form; means corresponding to the desired cooling pipe may be provided to ensure a determined local calorific action, these means may be constituted, for example, by separate zones which may themselves be furnished with different cooling members or identical cooling members set differently.
The gas chamber 3 must extend over a height making it possible to maintain a liquid column S2 sufficiently high to ensure, in accordance with the invention, at the corresponding level, a pressure preventing the formation of sinkings and / or liquations.
The complete cooling of the endless ingot S takes place at a distance L from the upper level S3 of the molten metal. By way of specific example, if the mold has a diameter of 100 mm, the height L is approximately 2,400 mm and the pressure of the liquid is of the order of 1.7 atmospheres (of overpressure). The endless ingot leaves the mold at a surface temperature of about 1350 C. and passes through a gas chamber in which the temperature of the gases is of the order of 600 C. On leaving said chamber, the ingot without fin has an outside temperature of around 1150 C.
These conditions made it possible to obtain excellent ingots, absolutely free from liquations or spongieu- seso formations.
For the reception of the endless ingot and the control of its exit, there are provided, below the gas chamber, cylinders 5-6 fitted with a drive device 7. The cylinders 5-6 must, when there is a risk of the appearance of internal cracks, attack the ingot S below the point S4 of the liquid core. It can be checked whether the ingot has axial shrinkages due to a premature application of a clamping pressure by the drive device, interrupting the casting and allowing part of the ingot to solidify completely above the rolls.
We can then observe on the cross section of the ingot the possible presence of an axial crack S5 (fig. 2) which extends between the points of application Q1 and Q2 of the clamping pressure. When such a defect is observed, the distance between the axis of said rolls 5 and 6 and the lower end of the tubular mold 1 must be increased.
Since the ingot leaves the tubular mold 2 at a surface temperature of the order of 1250 to 1350 C., but that, on the other hand, it is still liquid inside, this state being able to continue over several lengths mold, there are provided pairs of idle guide rollers, such as 8a, 8b and 9a, 9b which prevent any buckling or breakage of the ingot S supported by the input rolls 5-6 (the quenching provided below the mold 2 have not been shown to give more clarity to the figure).
