<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
dant.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

CURRENT LIMITATION GEAR CONTROL UNIT.
The present invention relates to electrical apparatus for controlling the speed of a drive motor with limitation of the load current of the motor and, more particularly, to apparatus of this type, the excitation current of which of the motor serving for the adjustment of the speed comes from an alternating current line through rectifiers controlled according to the speed.
In the devices of this. kind hitherto used in operation, an error voltage is applied to the control or gate circuit of electronic rectifiers, which is a function of the speed, which normally controls and stabilizes the running speed according to a desired speed and it A link is also provided between the same gate or control circuit and the armature circuit of the motor for automatic limitation of the load current of the motor, during acceleration. There are cases, for example of drive motors forming part of a papermaking line, where the regulation obtained with the control devices must be extremely precise.
It is difficult to satisfy such conditions, unless you isolate the circuits influenced by the error voltage of the armature circuit of the motor which gives the signal dependent on the load used to control the rectifier of the motor. current limitation. The known apparatuses effecting this separation and giving the desired stability are complicated and use a large number of electronic circuit elements.
The invention therefore aims to provide - An apparatus of the defined type giving a precise and sensitive adjustment of the speed and ensuring a high precision current limitation by means of much simpler devices and with fewer electro tubes. nics than before for the same result.
- A device of simple design in which the circuit
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
motor driver with variable excitation for speed regulation is completely isolated from the series inductor of the motor or from any other resistance of the armature circuit, the voltage drop of which determines the acceleration speed by limitation of speed as a function of a predetermined maximum current intensity.
- A current limiting speed control device which makes it easy to choose a high current limit for the acceleration control and a much lower limit to adjust, in normal operation, the mechanical tension of the motor. manufactured material, for example the tension of the sheet in a papermaking machine.
In the apparatus according to the invention, the armature circuit of a DC motor is supplied by a suitable source of DC current, such as a generator or a group of rectifiers. The motor has an inductor winding with independent excitation for controlling and regulating the speed of the motor, supplied by an AC line through an adjustable single-phase or three-phase rectifier whose control circuit receives a synchronous periodic voltage. with the rectifier plate voltage but out of phase with it.
The apparatus described so far has been similar to known apparatuses and it may also contain a complex source of error voltage which applies a DC voltage component varying as a function of the deviations of the speed of the motor from the voltage. their desired on the rectifier control circuit, used to stabilize the speed at this value.
In contrast to the known apparatuses, the apparatus of the invention uses a saturation reactor, the alternating current windings of which form part of a phase shifter circuit supplying the rectifier control circuit with the periodic voltage component. of the aforementioned order; and the saturation control windings of the saturation reactance are placed across a series resistor of the armature circuit of the motor with the polarity desired to increase the rectified motor excitation voltage when the current d '. armature of the motor increases excessively.
Thanks to other features of the invention, the saturation reactance varies not only the phase of the periodic gate voltage component but also its amplitude, which gives the desired limitation of the current by the combined effect. and simultaneous of the two commands. The invention will emerge clearly from the description given below of a preferred embodiment of the invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows at 10 a machine of a papermaking line, for example a calender, which must operate in conjunction with other machines in the line. The machine 10 is driven by the induction 11 of a direct current motor M provided with a series inductor 12 and a main inductor 13 with independent excitation. The motor shaft carries a tachometer generator G supplying a signal voltage indicating the speed of the motor. The armature circuit of the motor receives its current, via a starter 16 or equivalent, from the terminals 14 and 15 of a direct current generator or other adjustable voltage source.
The starter 16 may include a contact 17 which is open during the periods of starting and acceleration of the motor M, but which is closed manually or automatically when the speed of the motor M has reached its normal operating value.
The main inductor 13 of the motor M receives its adjustable excitation from an alternating current line 18 by means of power transformers 19 and three control rectifier tubes 21, 22, 23 of the gas atmosphere type. or steam. The rectifier tubes have a common cathode conductor 24 connected to one terminal of the inductor of the motor 13, while a connection 25 connects the other terminal of the inductor 13 to the secondary windings of the transformers. The intensity of the rectified current sent by the tubes 21, 22, '23 into the inductor 13 depends on the voltage conditions of the control or gate circuits of the rectifiers.
Respective conductors 26, 27 and 28 of these gate circuits are connected to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
phase shifter circuit 30 which supplies the AC grid voltage component to the control circuits. Circuit 30 is provided with calibration resistors 31 and 32 making it possible to adjust the phase shift of the AC grid voltage components of tubes 21 and 22 with respect to the grid voltage AC component of tube 23. Adjustment of the resistors. and 32 remains unchanged during operation, and the AC grid voltage components of the three tubes are out of phase with each other by 120.
The phase shifter circuit 30 is supplied via a transformer 33 coupled by another phase shifter circuit 34 to a transformer 35 whose primary winding is connected to the alternating current line 18. The phase shifter circuit 34 and the transformer 35 make it possible to superimpose on the three alternating grid voltage components of the tubes 21, 22 and 23, an additional variable phase shift as well as a variation in amplitude. This variable phase shift and this variation in amplitude are regulated by two inductive windings 37 and 38 of a saturation reactance or magnetic amplifier R. Winding 37 is placed in series with the primary of transformer 35.
The winding 38 forms part of the phase shifter circuit 34. The reactance R is shown with three branches, although different other known types of toroidal core reactors can be used, two in number. The degree of core saturation of the reactance R and hence the actual impedance of windings 37 and 38 is controlled by means of direct current babinings 39 and 40, placed on the central branch in the example given. The winding 39 is placed at the terminals of the series inductor 12 of the motor M so that it is flown by the direct excitation current proportional to the load current of the motor.
It may be noted that, if desired, a special resistor can be placed in series in the armature circuit of the motor M to the terminals of which the control winding 39 of the reactance is then connected. In some cases it may be useful to insert an amplifying device between the series inductor or the special resistance of the armature circuit and the control coil 39 of the reactance. The coil 40 receives its direct current, through the resistors 41, 42 of the adjustable rheostat 43, from the terminals 44 and 45 to which a suitable source of direct voltage must be connected.
The coils 39 and 40, or their respective circuits are polarized such that these two reactance control coils are in opposition.
The actual impedance of the windings 37 and 38 therefore depends on the difference between the voltages applied to the two control windings.
The aforementioned generator-tachometer G is placed in series with an adjustable reference voltage source taken from an adjustable part of a potentiometer 49 connected in its entirety to the terminals of a DC voltage source shown schematically at 46. Si as desired, this voltage source may be that which supplies terminals 44, 45 and may consist of a constant voltage exciter generator or a rectifier circuit supplied by the alternating current line 18. The difference between the tacho voltage and the speed control voltage set by the rheostat 49 is applied to the input terminals of an amplifier 47. An output terminal of the amplifier 47 is connected to the common cathode connection 24 of the rectifier tubes 21, 22, 23.
The other output terminal of amplifier 47 is connected by a connection 48 to phase shifter circuit 30. Amplifier 47 is preferably one of the amplitude limiting amplifiers of known type whose output voltage variation remains between for example plus and minus 30 volts, variation amply sufficient to sweep the entire operating range of the rectifier tubes but sufficiently small so that the amplifier does not cause exaggerated phase shifts.
The control or grid circuits of the rectifier tubes 21, 22, 23 leave the respective control gates through respective connections 26, 27, 28 'to the phase shift circuit 30, thence through connection 48 to the amplifier 47 and .from the amplifier to the cathode wire 24. Note that each of the three gate circuits includes two gate voltage sources. One source is represented by phase shifter circuit 30 which, as has been said, supplies the gate circuit with an AC component of gate voltage. This voltage is normally invariably out of phase, preferably 90, with respect to the anode voltage of the corresponding tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
before.
However, as has been explained, an additional phase shift and amplitude variation can be superimposed on the AC gate voltage component by the action of the saturation reactance R. The second gate voltage component source for the rectifier gate circuits is represented by amplifier 47 which supplies a DC voltage whose amplitude and polarity depend on the difference between the voltage of the tachometer and the adjustable reference voltage chosen by adjusting the slider of the rheostat 49.
In order to explain the operation of the control device, it seems good to consider first of all the normal operating conditions of the motor M and of the machine which it controls. It will first be assumed in addition that under these conditions the windings 37 and 38 do not change impedance so that the AC components applied to the grid circuits of the rectifiers by the phase shifter circuit 30 have a constant amplitude and a fixed phase shift with respect to to the anode voltages of the respective rectifiers.
In this case, the ignition conditions of the rectifier tubes 21, 22, 23 depend entirely on the DC gate voltage component coming from the amplifier 47. As long as the machine is running at the correct speed corresponding to the setting of the control rheostat 49, the grid voltage conditions and the ignition poles of the rectifiers do not vary. When the motor speed deviates from the desired value, the corresponding positive or negative change in the input differential voltage of amplifier 47 causes a corresponding change in the gate voltage component applied by amplifier 47. to the rectifier grid circuits.
The device operates in the conventional manner to stabilize the motor M at the chosen running speed.
If we consider the case where the motor M accelerates, for example when the voltage applied to terminals 14 and 15 goes from zero to the normal running value for starting and accelerating the motor M to full speed, before to couple the machine in question to another machine in the chain which could already turn at normal speed, during these starting periods, the engine speed is first of all much lower than the normal speed for which the speed regulators described above above have been provided. It is for this purpose that the amplifier 47 first applies to the grid circuits of the rectifiers a negative voltage component which tends to reduce the firing angle of the rectifiers 21, 22, 23 or even to make them not. -conductors.
This reduction decreases the excitation of the inductor 13 of the motor, the speed of which increases accordingly with a corresponding large increase in the armature current. Electrical and mechanical devices can be overloaded as a result, and electrical overload protection devices can stop the motor, making it impossible or difficult to start properly.
In the device according to the invention, the increase in the armature current of the motor causes a corresponding increase in the voltage across the terminals of the control coil 39 of the reactance R. The magnetizing effect of this coil consequently reduces the magnetization. constant of the winding 40 and the reactance becoming less saturated, the actual impedance of the windings 37 and 38 increases correspondingly. It follows that the phase shifters 34 and 35 impose on the AC voltage component of the rectifier tubes 21, 22, 23 a phase shift of up to +90 which advances the ignition point of the rectifier tubes, and at the same time increase. time the amplitude of this AC gate voltage component, which further advances the ignition point of the tubes.
The increase in the armature or load current of the motor during the starting and acceleration periods has the effect of reinforcing the weakening excitation exerted by the speed regulating devices and activating the inductor 13 of the motor. with strong or full excitement. In this way the load currents in the armature circuit of the motor are limited, and the starting of the motor is regulated so as to be done with the desired flexibility.
If we refer again to normal running conditions in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
which the motor is running at or near the desired speed, it will be noted that the saturation reactance R as well as the phase shifters and the associated amplitude control circuit remain in service to limit the current according to the voltage applied to the winding 40. By passing this voltage from a high value intended for accelerations to a low value for normal operation, the current control can be exerted in normal operation so as to control or adjust the mechanical tension of the paper or the material manufactured in the machine in question. The rheostat 43 provided in the circuit of the coil 40 makes it possible to choose the mechanical tension by adjusting the slider of the rheostat.
The change from strong to weak excitation of the coil 40 can also be done automatically by means of the contact switch 17 shown in parallel with the resistor 41 of the circuit of the coil 40
In addition to providing a relatively simple device for limiting the current during acceleration, regulating the speed and controlling the mechanical tension, the present invention ensures complete separation between the inductor on the one hand. control 13 of the motor which is used to control and regulate the speed, and on the other hand, the series inductor 12 of the motor or the armature circuit of the motor, the current of which determines the degree of acceleration and limitation of mechanical tension.
By thus avoiding leaks and uncontrollable phenomena between these two circuits, the device of the invention exhibits a high degree of stability. In addition, the device does not contain any moving parts whose position varies during regulation, and all the elements are sufficiently simple and fixed so that the calibrations made do not undergo undesirable variations.
