  PROCEDE ET APPAREIL PERFECTIONNES. POUR LA TREMPE SUPERFICIELLE DES
METAUX.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Les avantages de la réalisation du chauffage au moyen de bagues de carbone ou de graphite, de tungstène ou de molybdène consistent principa- lement en l'utilisation favorable de l'énergie apportée, en la manière sim- ple de mise en oeuvre, en la possibilité d'effectuer un réglage précis de la température de la surface de la pièce d'oeuvre, et en la méthode compara- tivément peu coûteuse de la transformation de l'énergie en la forme requise ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  PERFECTED PROCESS AND APPARATUS. FOR THE SURFACE SOAKING OF
METALS.

   The present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for surface hardening of steel, cast steel parts, etc.

   Quenching machine parts and workpieces in general which are subject to wear and abrasion, carried out so that a hard, wear-resistant layer forms on the surface without the revived core is not affected, has previously been carried out by two methods, namely: flame quenching and electric heating, preferably by high frequency currents.

   In the case of flame quenching, in order to obtain a build-up of heat on the surface of the workpiece, an adequately high amount of heat must be supplied - quickly and for this purpose, an amount, large too, gas and oxygen must be supplied which, in the case of large rooms, involves large volumes. The evacuation of waste gases, the quantity of which, in the case of large burners, is very important, causes difficulties. The energy contained in these gases is therefore only partially used and the adjustment of the surface temperature of the workpiece is seriously hampered by the flames.

   The disadvantage of the quenching carried out by means of high frequency currents is constituted by the very great equipment costs required in the case of large work pieces.

   The method is also known which consists in annealing the work pieces by making use of electric heating resistors arranged along the entire length of the work piece in the wall of an annealing chamber.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 or by using the latter as a heating resistor.

  Due to the size of the plant required in these cases, the process is not only expensive, but, moreover, it is not suitable for quenching large areas, since it is not possible to move the part. 'works fairly quickly towards the cooling medium. Attempts to apply this quenching process using ordinary heating resistors covering the entire surface to be quenched must necessarily be limited to small areas, such as the active areas of the cams.

   The aforementioned disadvantages are avoided, according to the present invention, by the fact that the workpiece, the surface of which is heated to the high temperature required by a heating resistor placed near the workpiece and supplied with current electric, and the said heating resistor, which is associated with a cooling device arranged behind it, are moved relative to each other, which causes the quenching by fragments of the entire surface, instead of the quenching of the entire surface at once.

   The heating resistor may be in the form of a bar, ring or other shape and the workpiece may be moved relative to said resistor or vice versa. This relative movement can be continuous or intermittent.

   It is seen that in this way, the required apparatus is small. If necessary, the apparatus can be transportable and, in the case of the treatment of large surfaces, it can be transported to the place where the workpiece is located. It can also be seen that a great deal of latitude is offered with regard to the dimensions of the surface to be treated. By modifying the speed of the relative movement, the width of the bar or the ring or its distance from the surface of the workpiece, it is possible to set the desired or accessible degree of surface heating or heat. quench depth at all particular points. Thus, for example, the workpiece may be soaked in places highly exposed to wear and abrasion and left as it is in other places.

   In addition, the efficiency is greatly increased, because the transmission of heat does not only take place by convection, as in the use of gas, but also and first of all by radiation (at the fourth power).

   Bars, rings or the like used as heating resistors are mainly made of carbon. If a large number of similar pieces are quenched one after another, graphite, tungsten, molybdenum or the like is used instead of carbon.

   In order to prevent the radiation of heat to the surrounding space, the electrically heated ring, bar or the like is surrounded by a heat insulating member of suitable shape. By giving this member a suitable length, it is possible to achieve preheating and thus to make the best use of the energy supply.

   Annular heaters can be made in one piece or, preferably, a number of segments. The carbon segments can be easily produced by press, agglomeration or the like.

   When bars, rings or annular segments, etc., of tungsten or molybdenum graphite, are used, it is also necessary to provide a supply line for hydrogen or nitrogen. which can, for example, be fitted between the annular water pipe which surrounds the workpiece and which is constructed as a sprayer, and the heating body of graphite, tungsten or molybdenum, so that this the latter is heated to incandescence in an atmosphere of hydrogen or N2. Segments of graphite, tungsten or molybdenum are practically indestructible. The use of a protective gas is also advantageous in the case of carbon heaters.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   To achieve a suitable transformation of energy, it suffices to have a transformer of suitable dimensions. The use of an expensive converter is thus avoided. The ring segments are preferably chosen so that all three phases of a three phase power supply are equally charged. Since in this improved method no flames occur or only negligible flames occur, it is also possible to control the surface temperature of the workpiece. By providing adequate length and thickness of the ring segments and using an adequate feed rate, any desired quenching can be achieved.

   The heating according to the invention can also be easily carried out with the aid of straight-line heating bars, arranged around the periphery of the workpiece.

   One way of implementing the invention is illustrated, by way of example, by the appended drawing.

   Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation of the general arrangement.

   Fig. 2 shows a section of the general arrangement.

   The heating device consists of a ring placed around the workpiece 1 and formed by three segments 2, 3 and 4, each of which is connected to electrical conductors. A heat-insulating ring 5 made of, for example, chamotte, surrounds the heating ring and is fixed thereto.

  An annular water pipe 6, provided with openings serving as sprayers, is disposed behind the heating ring for the purpose of extinguishing the surface of the workpiece which has been heated. The segments of the ring can be made of carbon, graphite, tungsten, molybdenum or the like. If use is made of a graphite, tungsten or molybdenum ring, an annular pipe 7 is also provided, provided with outlet openings 8, intended for the supply of hydrogen or nitrogen, of such that the ring is ignited in a hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere and combustion of the ring material is avoided.

   The segments of the heating ring are connected to the three phases of a transformer (not shown). The heat-insulating ring 5, attached to the heating ring, prevents radiation to the surrounding space and, because it is longer than the width of the segments, a space 9 is left between it and the workpiece, which allows to preheat the part which remains to be soaked.

   In operation, the workpiece is moved relative to the heater and the extinguishing device in the direction of arrow 2, or the heater and the extinguishing device can be moved relative to the workpiece. works in the opposite direction. The workpiece 1, which can receive a slow rotation around its axis, is lowered through the heating body, slowly, in the direction of arrow A, so that the workpiece is soaked in fragments. The movement can be continuous or intermittent.

   The advantages of carrying out the heating by means of rings of carbon or graphite, of tungsten or of molybdenum consist mainly in the favorable use of the energy supplied, in the simple manner of implementation, in the the ability to fine-tune the temperature of the workpiece surface, and the comparatively inexpensive method of transforming energy into the required shape;

   they also consist of the possibility of carrying out a deeper quenching than in the case of the usual surface quenching, carried out by means of high frequency currents or gas burners, in an energy input which is not linked to the conditions local, as in the case of flame quenching (production of coke oven gas, oxygen, acetylene, etc., in large quantities), and the evacuation of waste gases produced in the process. Compared with surface quenching by high frequency currents, the great advantage is that the heating medium is very little affected by power fluctuations and frequency variations,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 due to thermal inertia.

   In the case of wires, thin bars and similar workpieces of small cross-section, the quenching can be carried out in the whole of the cross-section.
