Description

  EMULSION POLYMERIZATION PROCESS.

It is known to carry out the polymerization of vinyl compounds in an aqueous medium, in the presence of persulphates as catalysts and of various emulsifying agents.

Certain emulsifiers also have the property of retarding or partially inhibiting the polymerization of vinyl compounds. Similar emulsifiers are constituted, for example, by alkali or am-

 <EMI ID = 1.1>

te, ricinoleate or sodium linoleate. However, the aforementioned emulsifiers exhibit a remarkable ability to give latices of suitable stability, in particular in the case of the polymerization or copolymerization of vinyl compounds.

The method currently used has many drawbacks.

In particular, it requires relatively high amounts of emulsifier and, especially if an emulsifier is used to delay high doses of catalysts. These products remain largely in the polymer obtained and adversely affect its physical and mechanical properties.

The amount of catalyst can be reduced by voluntarily leaving a certain amount of oxygen in the reaction mixture, but the control of this amount of oxygen presents serious practical difficulties, so that successive fabrications do not take place under conditions. rigorously reproducible; this also results in a variation in the properties of the finished product. The catalytic efficiency of persulfates can also be activated by adding small amounts of salts.

of copper soluble in the aqueous phase.

An improvement has recently been made to these processes by gradually introducing the emulsifying agent, which makes it possible to reduce the amounts used, thus improving the properties of the polymers obtained.

However, this improvement is not applicable when the emulsifiers used act as a polymerization inhibitor. Indeed, after each successive addition of emulsifier, the rate of polymerization decreases considerably and the reaction stops before a sufficient amount of monomer is polymerized.

The process according to the present invention makes it possible to avoid these drawbacks while leading to polymers endowed with markedly improved properties.

The process consists in polymerizing the vinyl compounds in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a persulfate and of an emulsifying agent which inhibits polymerization, the operation being carried out in the complete absence of oxygen, with gradual introduction of the emulsifier and neutralization of the properties. inhibitors of the latter by the introduction of a sugar which activates the catalytic action of persulfate.

The total elimination of oxygen is easily obtained by flushing the reactor with an inert gas such as nitrogen and by performing successive vacuums after each flushing. The complete absence of oxygen makes it possible to set the initial conditions so as to obtain strictly reproducible results.

A part of the emulsifying agent can be introduced before the start of the polymerization or after the polymerization has already started, the amounts added being however markedly lower than the amounts generally used. During the polymerization, new amounts of emulsifier are introduced as well as the activator glucose, sorbose, lactose, etc. so as to compensate for the inhibitory action of the added emulsifiers. After complete polymerization, it is also possible to add new quantities of emulsifier in order to stabilize the emulsion, however, this latter addition is rarely necessary.

The improved process leads to very advantageous results, as emerges from the examples below.

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

In an autoclave, the atmosphere of which is strictly free of oxygen, are introduced per 1000 g of monomeric vinyl chloride, 1600 g of water, 7.0 g of the sodium salt of sulfonated methyl oleate, 0.8 g of. NaOH,

0.5 g of ammonium persulfate and quickly brought to the temperature of
50 [deg.] C.

After one hour of polymerization, a further 7.0 g of the sodium salt of sulfonated methyl oleate and 0.1 g of sorbose are added. After 4 hours 30 minutes, a drop in pressure inside the autoclave is observed and the polymerization is stopped. A polyvinyl chloride latex is obtained having a concentration of 36% by weight, with good mechanical stability. The thermal stability of the polymer is also very good.

 <EMI ID = 3.1>

In an oxygen-free autoclave are introduced per 1000 g of monomeric vinyl chloride, 1600 g of water, 0.8 g of NaOH and 0.5 g of ammonium persulfate. No emulsifier is initially introduced and the reaction mixture is rapidly brought to a temperature of 50 [deg.] C. When the polymerization has started, 18 g of the sodium salt of the sulfonated methyl ricinoleate and 0.1 g of sorbose. Polymerization is stopped after 7 h when the pressure in the autoclave has fallen to 3.5 Kgr / em <2>,

The mechanical properties of the latex and the thermal stability of the dried product are also very good.

A control polymerization test carried out in the presence of 3 to 6 mol g of oxygen and 5 mgr of copper sulphate per 1000 g of vinyl chloride requires, in order to arrive at products of less good quality, 35 g of the sodium oleate salt of methyl sulfonated and 1 g of ammonium persulfate when all the reagents are initially added.

The table below shows the main characteristics of the process and the properties of the products obtained compared to the control test carried out according to a known process.

 <EMI ID = 4.1>

The method according to the invention is not limited to the examples given above. Other vinyl compounds such as vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylates and methacrylates can be polymerized alone or as a mixture according to the process of the invention.
