<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DEVICE FOR AUTOMATIC PRESELECTION OF SPEED CHANGES
ESPECIALLY FOR VEHICLES.
In the main patent N 500,681 the true and proper maneuvering of the engagements of the different gears of the box is obtained by means of a lever (in this case combined with the clutch control) which determines as the first reciprocating movement the disengagement of the gearbox. gear and the pre-selection for the next gear and with the second reciprocating movement the engagement of a pre-selected pair of gears and the automatic pre-selection of the idle position. According to the variant embodiment of the present supplemental patent, the operating lever performs the disengagement of the pair of meshing gears and the engagement of the pre-selected torque by a single reciprocating movement.
In the attached drawing,
where the parts corresponding to those of the main patent are indicated by the same references provided with an apex is shown a preferred embodiment of the device.
Figo 1 shows the device seen from the front
Figo 2 is a partial plan Figo 3 shows the device in the 4th speed position.
Figo 4 is a detail of the device with the 4th speed gears engaged and pre-selection of the firsto
Figures 5 and 6 illustrate in section two positions of the automatic device for connecting the engagement members with the clutch members.
The illustrated device practically repeats the structural diagram of the main patent and the movements of the kinematical organs are also corresponding,
except for some variations due to simplified designs.

fication of the construction in addition to the differences resulting from the reduction of the clutch control to a single-stroke control (that is to say to a single alternative operation), compared to the two times provided for by the cited patent
The differences of the constructive type concern above all the pre-selection cam 10 'which is not of the radial rotating type, but of the plate type with axial movement (the cam is guided in the axial direction by two pins 100 collaborating with an opening in the cam itself.) The cam 10 'is controlled, through the intermediary of the link 102, by the rocking lever 104, on which acts,
by means of rod 106, the governor actuated by the transmission. -
The cam has its longitudinal edges shaped in such a way that with one of them the lever 28 '(via the roller 14') collaborates, the said lever being pivoted at 108 to the body of the device and with the another collaborates with lever 16 '(via roller 12), said lever being pivoted at 110 to the body of the device. The rollers 14 'and 12' are opposite with respect to the direction of movement of the cam 10 '.
The different positions which the levers 16 'and 28' assume during the movement of the cam effect the pre-selection of the different steps in a manner analogous to that which results from the main patent.
In figo 4 are precisely indicated, by D the reverse position for lever 28 '(D1 for lever 16'), by E the neutral (insane) position for 28 '(E1 for 16'), by F the first step position for 28 'and F1 for 16'.
In a similar way G = G1, H = H1, L = L1, respectively represent the positions of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th step for the two levers.
The pre-selection device in this case also provides for the lever 78 '(with control by Bowden 80') which serves for the manual control of the cam 10 'for the idle position, reverse and forward). The lever 78 'acts on the peripheral notch M' of a disc integral with the oscillating lever 1040
The shaft actuation disk 50 'with the projection 24' is wedged directly on the shaft itself (while in the main patent are provided a lever and an intermediate rod).
The pegs of disc 50 'are now reduced to only two, 112 and 114, the first relating to the control of the 1st and 2nd gear, and the second for the 3rd and 4th gear and reverse gear. The corre- sponding rods with axial movement controlled by the projection 24 ', which determine in the change of speed the meshing of the different steps are illustrated in fig 2; by 116 that relating to the 1st and 2nd step and by 118 that relating to the 4th and 3rd step and by 120 that relating to the reverse.
The shaft carrying the projection 24 'can move in an axial direction so as to cause the projection 24' in a known manner to collaborate with one or the other of the rods 116, 118, 120.
Said axial movement is obtained in the example illustrated by means of a toothed sector 122 collaborating with a rack 124 integral with the projecting door pin 24 '. The rack is of a special type (being constituted by a solid of revolution with generator having the shape of a rack) so as to allow the rotation of the projecting bearing shaft without the rack interfering with or losing its contact with it. the toothed sector. The rack 124 is represented, in the example illustrated, by the very periphery of the disc 50 '. The toothed sector 112 is controlled by means of the radial arm 126 presented by the rotation shaft of the sector itself, at the end of which arm is pivoted the rod 128.
The latter is connected by its other end to the

lever 169 on which acts the cam 109 contrasting with the antagonist spring 130. The connection of the rod 128 with the lever 16 'is not rigid but is made by two opposed elastic means 132 which identify an average position of connection without yet prevent ,. within certain limits, relative axial displacements of the rod 138 with respect to the lever 16 'in both directions. Such freedom of movement is necessary to allow the
EMI3.2
pre-selection movement of lever 169 (caused by cam 10) when rod 128 is stationary when a step is engaged (which prevents displacement
EMI3.3
axial cementing of the shaft with projection 249.).
Said freedom of movement is. ,, much more that which causes the same pre-selection because it determines the loading of one or the other of the two springs 132 so that the latter acts on the sector 122 when the As the device has been put back into "idle" mode, the possibility of axially moving the projecting carrier shaft is presented again. Connection of rod 134 with lever 28 'through opposing springs 136 is analogous. The
EMI3.4
lever 38 "is also provided with a contact spring 140. The rod 134 controls the actuator 3.9 of the rotation of the projecting shaft 24-.
Said member is constituted by an arm disposed between the pegs 112 and 114. provided with two opposite notches 142 and 144 intended to receive said pegs and to cause, by their displacement, the rotation of the disc 509 in a sena or l 'another depending on the direction in which the rods 116-118-120 must be displaced axially in order to have the engagement or disengagement of the steps. To the notches 142 and 144 correspond in the main patent the push pins 38 and 40, except that these are
EMI3.5
unidirectional drive units9 in that the "mad" condition is obtained by a thrust movement such as that of meshing of the various steps ,,
while the notches 142 and 144 are driving members
EMI3.6
It is unidirectional in that the "mad" condition 9 that is to say to meshing is obtained by a pulling maneuver opposite to that of pushing for the insertion of the steps.
EMI3.7
This difference deriving from having reduced to a single time the maneuver of the gear change, also leads to the reduction of the 4 pegs of the disc 50 provided for in the main patent to only two .9 because are-
EMI3.8
abbant those of disengaging for the preselection of the mad march.
The lever 209 influenced by the cam 109 performs. through the organ 134, three positions of 190rgane 349 which swings around the end of the angled lever 146 pivoted at 148 to the body of the device. The middle position (Figs. 1 and 2) of the member 34 'allows it to move freely in an axial direction without collaborating with the pins 112 and 114. The right position (figs) .3 and 4) determines the collaboration of the pin 114 with the notch 114 and hence the displacement of the disc 509 in the direction of
EMI3.9
clockwise when the member 319 moves along the arrow X and in the opposite direction when 34 'moves in a direction counter to X.
'The position to the left of the organ 34' naturally determines the contrary movements.
The three positions provided for the 16 'lever by the action of the
EMI3.10
cam 10 determine the axial position of the protruding bearing shaft 24 'and hence it is chosen on which of the three rods 116-118-120 the protruding 249 is intended to work when the member X 34' is moved.

The member 34 is here also provided with an axial appendage 609, the stop of which during the movement of the member itself is to prevent the latter from swinging around its pivot point with the lever 146 and therefore to disengage from the pegs 112 and 114 before having reached the transitional position illustrated in FIG. 1, that is to say that corresponding to the instant when the operating lever is all. forward.
EMI3.12
L9appendix 609 in fact collaborates with the fixed stops 88 'which identify the three positions of axial oscillation of the member 34'; the central one when the appendix moves sideways at either stop 88 'and the two laterals when the appendix moves sideways at either stop
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
88 '(as shown in fig 3). In this way, the axial movement of the organ 34 'is independent of the action that the lever 28' possibly tends to transmit by means of the springs 134. Said action is transmitted on the contrary only when the appendix 60 'disengages from the stops 88', that is to say when the member 34 'is lowered, after the first maneuver (forward) so as to allow the pre-selection movements.
The movement to the lever 146 for the gear change operation is also in this case transmitted by the pedal lever 70 'which controls, via the rod 72' the clutch of the vehicle. The lever 70 acts on the rod 58 'which moves in the guide sleeve 150 with an axial movement. The latter is pivoted on a plate 152 which is in turn pivoted at 153 to the base body of the device. The sleeve 150 can thus follow the movements due to its geometric sequence with the rod 58 'and lever 146'.
The rod 58 'does not act directly on the angled lever 147, but on the contrary by means of a device for limiting the axial stroke consisting of a hollow cylindrical body 154 which is united to the lever 146 by pivoting and in which moves the cylindrical end of the rod 58 '. The latter has a peripheral groove 156, while a second 158 is provided inside the cylindrical sliding cavity of the member 154. The said member has radial holes in which are disposed balls 160 having a diameter greater than the thickness of the cylindrical member 1540
The operation of the device is as follows: by acting on the pedal 70 ', the rods 72' and 58 'are moved according to the arrow Y.
The rod 72 'performs the maneuver of detaching the motor from the gear change, while the rod 58'. which at the beginning was in the position shown in fig. 5 moves freely in member 154, the balls 160 being housed in the holes of the member itself and in the groove 158. The said balls therefore prevent any relative movement between the member 154 and the sleeve. support 150. In such a way, in the first part of the travel of the pedal of the clutch 70 ', while the detachment of the friction surfaces is obtained, no action is taken on the engagement means of the gearbox gears. By continuing, on the contrary, to push on the pedal 70 ', the rod 58' reaches the bottom of the axial hole of the member 154 and at the same time the groove 156 of the rod 58 'is arranged in correspondence with the balls 160.
In this position the balls 160 can slide in the radial direction away from the groove 158 and being disposed in that 156, that is to say .. by releasing the member 154 of the sleeve 150 and allowing its movement according to the Y arrow which is printed by the rod 58 '. Then the angled lever 156 rotates in the direction of the arrow K by moving in an axial direction the member 34 'and therefore causing the disc 50' to rotate in one direction or the other depending on the organ 34 'collaborates with the ankle 112 or 114.
By relinquishing the clutch pedal, the movements of the clutch springs are carried out opposite to those which have just been described; the rod 58 'moves in the direction opposite to the arrow Y and drives by the connection made by the balls 160 with the member 154 (fig. 5), the lever 146 which oscillates in a direction opposite to that of the arrow K.
The member 34 'moves in an axial direction and opposite to the arrow X realizing (its selection position is not that of the average "mad" as indicated in FIG. 1) the new rotation of the disc 50' in one direction or the other depending on the orientation of the member 34 'due to the position of the lever 28', At the end of this action the rod 58 'is located with its groove 156 facing the groove 158 and therefore the balls 160 enter the latter connecting the member 154 to the sleeve 150 (and therefore the lever 146 stops) and releasing the rod 58 'from the member 154. The rod 58' continues in- following its course in a direction opposite to the arrow Y allowing the rod 72 'to perform the connection between motor and gearbox again.
The maneuver is accomplished starting with a single forward and backward movement of the friction pedal. It obviously follows from the above that the forward maneuver

of the clutch pedal determines the disengagement of the gear which happens to be inserted and consequently the "idle" position 9 while the backward movement (of return) of the clutch pedal brings to the en- gearing of the step which results in being pre-selected by the levers 16 'and 28'.
EMI5.2
In order to help the insufficient effect of the disengaging springs, especially in the clutch engaged position, an auxiliary spring 162 is provided which acts on the lever 146. The spring 162 is helical and its direction is such that the transmitted force is directed. on the pivoting axis of lever 146 when the pedal 70 "is fully lowered. In this position
EMI5.3
it therefore has no useful torque effect on the lever 146 due to the spring 1629 while its action increases as the lever 14 turns in a direction opposite to K, that is, as and when at the same time decreases the return effect of the clutch springs.
The clutch springs and the spring 162 therefore collaborate with each other with opposite effects so as to always make the return of the pedal 70 which is to execute effective.

inserting the pre-selected step.
In fig. 1 is illustrated the position of the device in "mad" (lever 789 in the middle), that is to say with the levers 169 and 289 in the pre-selection position of the "mad" (member 349 in the middle and sector 122 also in the middle although the sector can be in any position for the "mad" position.,

In said fig. 1 the pedal 709 is lowered, ie it has performed the first part of its run (forward run, disengaging the step which may have been inserted).
If 190n lets go of the pedal 70 ', the latter returns to its initial position as was previously said by coupling the clutch and moving the member 349 in a direction opposite to the arrow X. The member 34' on the other hand
EMI5.6
The gear does not determine the meshing of any step because it is in the central "mad" position.
In figo 3 the device is illustrated in the position of 4th gear the 4th gear is also the preselected gear besides the meshed one and this is noted by the position of the cam 109 and then by the fact that the springs 132 and 154 'are under equal load, ie the connection between rods and levers is in the mid-equilibrium position (the same situation occurs in fig. 1). If we act on the pedal 70, it in its forward stroke would perform the disengaging of the IV leading to the "crazy" while in the return stroke
EMI5.7
it would re-engage the 4th step, which is the pre-selected one, thus bringing the device back to the position shown (fig.3).
In fig. 4 it is true that the 4th step is still inserted as in the example of fig. 3 (and this is revealed by the position

of the disc 509.11 and 1? it is also assumed by the position of the sector 122 which is not visible in the figure) but the mar- -; - o. "" '- the pre-selected che is the 1st (as it results from the position of the cam 109). For this reason the rods 128 and 134 are not connected to the levers 169 and 28P in the mid-equilibrium position by the springs 132 and 136g but in a displaced position9 so that one of the springs of each of said couples is loaded. and can therefore, when the rods 128 and 134 are free to move, bring them into the correct position.

tion which determines the pre-selection of the 1st step.
This happens at the end of the forward action of the pedal 7099, that is to say, when the 34th component S9 is moved along the arrow X while disengaging the 4th step it is at = d.im. re by turning the disc 50 'clockwise until it is in the position shown in fig. 1, and when 19

the return of the pedal 70 'leads first to the engagement of the 1st and then to the coupling of the clutch as previously described.
It is naturally understood that the details of the execution of the device and its destinations of use may vary without departing from the enclosure for this and leaving the field of the invention. The device will be subject, for example, to variations depending on the particular type of gear change to which it is to be applied. The example described refers to a normal gearbox for vehicles with IV forward and reverse gears. Movement of lever 70 'can. naturally also be obtained automatically, for example, by a servomotor actuated by the means for preselecting the steps.
