D'autre part, tous ces modes de réalisation connus de l'étanché.;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  CENTRIFUGAL PUMP WITHOUT CABLE GLAND.

   The present invention relates to glandless centrifugal pumps and in particular relates to the seal on the shaft of these pumps, this seal being of essential importance for the proper functioning of these pumps.

   A large number of constructions are known for centrifugal pumps without a stuffing box. The problem of sealing the gap surrounding the shaft is solved in a more or less judicious manner.

  All of these constructions, however, have shortcomings which are particularly evident in pumps which are used for the delivery of very corrosive liquids, particularly at elevated temperatures.

   Most of the known constructions have the disadvantage of leading to a complicated arrangement of the entire pump. This is the case, in particular, of constructions of centrifugal pumps without a gland in which a second system of ducts is arranged in the impeller, which is connected to the system of delivery ducts proper, as well as pumps, also known. , in which are provided, on the side of the rear face of the movable wheel, open return discharge vanes or an auxiliary discharge wheel
On the other hand, all these known embodiments of the waterproofing .;

  ., ity impose an increased-consumption of energy, and they do not obstruct air intake in a certain way. through the gap surrounding the shaft, during operation and the resulting reduction in pump flow.

   The present invention, on the other hand, leads to a shaft seal for centrifugal pumps without a gland which is of as simple a construction as possible which requires neither a complicated arrangement for the pump nor the arrangement of additional devices. such as regulations

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Centrifugal impellers and the like, as used in known constructions for applying pressure to one another of the sealing surfaces.

   The shaft seal according to the present invention is formed from an annular piece of graphitic carbon, arranged between the hub of the moving wheel and the bearing which, on the housing or the casing, which is called upon to resist the pressure. , is opposite this hub., fixed to one of these two elements of the pump, and the free end face of which is constantly applied by the low pressure of a spring against a facing bearing provided on the other of the two elements, thus causing the watertight closing.

   This annular graphite part can therefore be fixed either to the hub of the movable wheel, in which case its end face which is opposite the movable wheel cooperates with a corresponding opposite bearing surface of the casing intended to withstand the pressure, or , as a variant, to the casing under pressure and then apply, by its end face which is on the side of the movable wheel, against the rear face, executed in the form of the surface of a mushroom head. valve, from the hub of the movable wheel.

   At the same time, an essential feature of the present invention is that there is no possible application of the two sealing surfaces against each other under pressure, as occurs in the known constructions, and that on the contrary there is an application of these surfaces one against the other which must be designated under the term of very light contact. In spite of this, an absolutely hermetic closure is obtained, owing to the excellent sliding and self-lubricating properties of the annular part made of graphitic carbon, the other advantages of which result from the great stability of this material under the action of temperature and that of acids.

   The properties of graphitic carbon which are essential for the application of pumps of this kind, for example for the pumping of hot acids and other very corrosive liquids, are similar to those of the materials which are ordinarily used. for the manufacture of pumps for these applications, such as silicon iron, chromium-nickel steel, stoneware, porcelain, lead, plastics, rubber and layers of enamelling.

   In what follows, the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pump without a gland with a first embodiment of the new construction of the shaft, with indication of the bearing housing in elevation.

   Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of another embodiment, limited to the part important for the understanding of the present invention. -
Figures 3 and 4 also show in longitudinal section and in cross section of a sealing part a different embodiment of the present invention.

   Figures 5 to 7 are similar representations of other possible embodiments.

   In figure 1, 1 designates the pressure casing, 2 the inlet tube, 3 the movable impeller and 4 the pump shaft.

   In a weakly conical bore 6 formed in the rear face of the hub 5 of the movable wheel, the graphite ring 7 has been press-inserted which consists of a part having a corresponding weakly conical shape and a part. cylindrical. The end face of the ring is applied, under the action for example of a spring housed in the bearing body 13 and which acts on the shaft, against the opposite bearing surface 8 which surrounds the passage orifice of shaft through the pressure casing, under low pressure (light application) adjustable.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The liquid which leaves the pressure chamber-9 of the pump and passes through the gap 10 of the labyrinth between the hub of the movable wheel and the casing enters the space 11 from where it is returned to the impeller movable through the discharge holes 12.

   Leakage liquid is avoided with absolute safety by covering the passage of the shafts thanks to the surfaces applied 1 'on top of the other (the rear face at the end of part 7 in graphitic carbon and the opposite bearing surface 8). As a result of this absolutely hermetic seal, it is possible to overcome with a pump of the new construction greater suction heights than with the designs known hitherto for centrifugal pumps without gland and even for pumps. with cable gland
The pump consists of only three parts, namely the casing intended to support the pressure, the suction pipe and the impeller.

   The embodiment according to FIG. 2 differs from that which has just been described only in that the graphitic ring, denoted in this case by 14, is not fixed in a bore of the hub of the wheel. movable, but is press-fitted inside the casing intended to resist the pressure, while, in an inverted arrangement .. the end face of the hub of the movable wheel, which is executed under the form 'of a flat surface 15, cooperates with the end face, located on the side of the movable wheel, of the graphitic ring 14 on which it is elastically applied and causes the sealing in the same way as what has been described above.

   In the embodiment according to Figures 3 and 4, the ring of graphite denoted in this case by 16 has been fixed to the casting inside the casing intended to resist the pressure. An annulus groove 17 of the graphitic carbon ring securely secures the ring to its location in combination with radial peripheral notches 18 provided on its rear collar and provided for therein. lon the execution example .. four.

   According to an arrangement which corresponds to that of FIG. I, the graphite ring can also be fixed in place to the casting in a similar manner in the hub of the movable wheel. On the other hand, in both cases, it can, instead of being fixed in place to the casting, be sealed in the corresponding building elements.

   The arrangement according to figure 5 corresponds to that of figure 2. with the difference that the pump shaft is made in a manner known per se from a material which does not resist corrosion and is made of. - Surrounded by a sleeve 20 for protecting the shaft in a material resistant to corrosion.

   All the embodiments of the invention described so far have in common this other advantage that at the same time it results in a low overhang of the shaft of the movable wheel mounted in cantilever. .

   Figures 6 and 7 show a slightly different embodiment for the overall construction and in which the axial displacement of the entire system of the movable wheel or the application, under pressure., Of the opposite faces l ' one against the other is made not in the same way as in the embodiments described first, that is to say in a manner known per se by a pressure spring arranged in the body bearing, but the shaft itself is fixed in the axial direction and an additional component which in turn contains the parts for sealing off the shaft opening is pivoted in a bore cylindrical 21 of the casing intended to withstand the pressure, so as to be able to undergo a translational movement under the pressure of a spring.

   According to figure 6, this construction element consists of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 valve mushroom sleeve 22 which is screwed by means of thread 24 onto a sleeve 23 which surrounds the shaft and which can move relative to this shaft. The sleeve 23 and therefore the sleeve 22 are subjected to the action of a spring 31 which presses against the nut 30 which closes the casing 29 and in this way engages the sealing surfaces 32 of the casing. graphite ring and sleeve 22 against each other.

   Between the sleeves 22 and 23 and as well as between the two flanges 26 of the pressure-bearing casing and 27 of the side casing 29, which are assembled by the bolt 28, is inserted the movable membrane 25.

  With the diaphragm 25 the perfectly tight seal already achieved by the graphitic annular piece is made even more secure and any exit of liquid through the gap between the bore 21 and the valve mushroom sleeve is made impossible.

   The embodiment according to FIG. 7 differs from that which has just been described only in that the pump shaft, which is not resistant to corrosion, is surrounded by a sleeve 20 for protecting this shaft. , made of a material resistant to corrosion, and that the graphitic ring is replaced by a sleeve 23 of graphitic carbon arranged so as to be able to move in the opposite direction of the pressure of a spring, in the continuous bore which passes through the pressure-resistant casing. This sleeve is applied directly against the flat seal face of the hub of the movable wheel in the manner described with reference to FIG. 6 for the sleeve 22 of the valve mushroom.

   How one produces the elastic pressure which applies the gasket surfaces against each other is of no importance in itself.

  It can be done, for example, also by means of two gland bolts with interposed pressure springs which rest against the bonnet of the gland.

   The application of the principle of the present invention is not limited to centrifugal pumps without a cable gland, it is, on the contrary, also possible in other cases in which the data are similar, for example in pumps. self-priming, vacuum pumps, compressors and the like. On the other hand, the invention is not limited in detail. It goes without saying, as regards its embodiment to the constructions shown in the drawings, and on the contrary there is the possibility of making numerous modifications. without departing from the limits of the principle of this invention.
