 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 EMI2.1

<tb> C <SEP> = <SEP> 2,4 <SEP> à <SEP> 3% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> Si <SEP> = <SEP> 1,5,à <SEP> 3%
<tb>
<tb> Mn <SEP> = <SEP> 0,2 <SEP> à <SEP> 0,6%
<tb>
<tb> Po <SEP> = <SEP> 0,5 <SEP> à <SEP> I.8%
<tb>
<tb> S. <SEP> = <SEP> jusque <SEP> I% <SEP> et <SEP> plus
<tb>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

La fonte de peu de valeur obtenue à bon marché au Haut-Fourneau est donc introduite dans un cubilot;
2 dans lequel on utilise un vent soufflé chaud;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  METHOD OF MANUFACTURING CAST IRON.

   Obtaining cast iron and its economic balance essentially depends on the possibility of treating as a charge for the blast furnace, in addition to poor ores, in particular German acid ores, large quantities of steel scrap. and foreign rich minerals
The shortage of grapeshot is increasingly felt and will hardly diminish in the future.

   There is also an ever increasing need to save foreign exchange., To abandon foreign minerals o Due to the economic circumstances, it is not favorable to produce at the Blast Furnace cast iron of the desired quality that one can remelt without difficulty in the current ordinary cupolas of foundry in order to obtain a valuable cast iron
With the aim of creating better possibilities of processing in the Blast Furnace poor ores, in particular indigenous acid ores., And of largely ridding the Blast Furnace of slag forming elements, a new approach has been taken. been indicated for many years to produce pig iron by the FASCHE-PEETZ process, according to the so-called acid or super acid reduction process.

   For this purpose it is intentionally dispensed with a temperature and a slag composition such as would be necessary to avoid in normal operation. furnace the natural tendency to increase the low sulfur content., which, on the one hand, obliges to greatly reduce the heat reserve of the Blast Furnace, on the other hand does not however avoid the necessity of subjecting the sulfur-rich cast iron to a related desulfurization by means of soda or otherwise., with., in practice,

   all the undesirable accompanying phenomena It is however regrettable that this process could not have succeeded in practice to the extent that it would have been desirable in the interest of - the German national economy.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The considerations set out above about the production of cast iron at the Blast Furnace now provide metallurgists with an opportunity to reflect on how to make it possible to economically obtain a cast iron by discharging the top. -Furnace of the elements of formation of the slag while starting from poor ores in particular of German acid ores.

   According to the present invention, based on the principles of the blast furnace acid or superacid reduction process, from poor ores, in particular German acid ores, with relatively small amounts of slag. first, a low-grade iron with low C and Mn content and high Sa content which is then charged into a neutral or basic cupola, used with an amount of fuel in excess of the normal proportion.

   in reduction mode and as a gas generator, with a hot blast at 400 C and more. ,, the said cupola being carried out with a relatively large quantity of basic slag, adding the alloying elements necessary for melting such as Mn or Si in the form of ore or oxide or even slag so as to obtain a low sulfur casting iron ,,, of the desired composition and at a high casting temperature of about 1450 to 1600 C.

   In this new process, we also tangentially do away with giving the cast iron immediately at the blast furnace the desired characteristics in foundry. Therefore the composition of this low value cast iron is of secondary importance. On the other hand, it is essential to constitute in the Blast Furnace, with small additions of limestone but possibly completely renouncing lime or C03 and even if necessary without any addition of manganiferous elements, a bed of fu- ion which provides the slag with satisfactory flowability properties.

  In some cases, the viscosity of the slag can be obtained by additions of inexpensive Al2O3-bearing elements or by alkalis. If the composition of the ore allows it, the p-index of the slag, that is to say the ratio between the basic and acid constituents of the slag, can in particular cases be lowered to a value close to 0.2, in 1 ' assumption, of course, where, in view of the economy of the process, the FeO content of the slag is not much higher than that of a normal basic slag.

   Such a font has approximately the following composition
 EMI2.1

<tb> C <SEP> = <SEP> 2.4 <SEP> to <SEP> 3% <SEP>
<tb>
<tb> If <SEP> = <SEP> 1.5, at <SEP> 3%
<tb>
<tb> Mn <SEP> = <SEP> 0.2 <SEP> to <SEP> 0.6%
<tb>
<tb> Po <SEP> = <SEP> 0.5 <SEP> to <SEP> I.8%
<tb>
<tb> S. <SEP> = <SEP> until <SEP> I% <SEP> and <SEP> plus
<tb>

The Si content is a function of the temperature and the basicity of the slag. Switching to a process with acidic or superacid slag even favors the reduction of Si. The loss of Mn is relatively low. we can therefore dispense with the addition of manganiferous elements. The P. content does not undergo any noticeable modification by changing the operation of the furnace. The low C and high S content eliminate direct subsequent use in normal cupola.

   Apart from the chemical composition, the metallographic structure of cast iron is also adversely affected.

   The significant savings obtained at the Blast Furnace then make it possible to subject the low-value cast iron thus produced to a new melting process, which not only gives the cast iron the chemical composition desired by the foundry, but also gives it the qualities corresponding to overheating at around 1500 C and above, similar to

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 those could be achieved, for example, by overheating in a flat hearth mixer or in a high power multiplex process (electric oven). '
The low value cast iron obtained cheaply at the blast furnace is therefore introduced into a cupola;
1.which preferably has a neutral or basic filling and can, depending on the case, work in continuous operation.
2 in which a hot blown wind is used;

   possibly enriched with oxygen, preferably at 400 C and more, for example 500 to 600 C and more, the heating of this wind can be done in a recuperator heated by the exhaust gases of the cupola or also in a Cowper existing blast furnace.

   3 in which a basic slag is used in an amount corresponding to the necessary reduction processes and the composition of the pig iron and whereby the superheating and refining of the pig iron are favorably influenced.

   4 which works with a proportion of coke which exceeds the sole needs of the smelting while allowing a reduction process .. and in which one can use a fuel of small caliber or other fuel of little value.

   5 which, depending on the case, can work as a gas generator, part of the gas produced being usable for preheating the wind by post combustion.

   The wall of the cupola and the blow nozzles themselves are preferably cooled with water. In such a cupola, we are in a situation not only to melt cast iron and scrap metal, but also to make reductions and produce a rise in the temperature of the molten material, from 1500 to 1600 Co
A low value cast iron of the approximate composition given above is transformed by passing through this furnace into a cast iron of the composition required by the smelter. The Co content can be elevated without difficulty up to 3.5 to 4% and more. The Si content does not suffer any change. because there is no loss in the window worth mentioning; Si can if desired be increased by addition of Fe-Si.

  The same is true for the Mn content which can be raised if necessary by adding manganiferous elements. because the furnace operates as a reducer and the basicity of the slag and the high temperature ensure a good supply of Mn. The P. content undergoes only minor changes; if an increase was necessary, it could be achieved by additions of Thomas slag, phosphates or other phosphorus-containing elements.

   The S. content drops considerably and is in fact conditioned by the high temperature and basic behavior of the slag.

   If the final sulfur content were still too high, it would be possible without difficulty to add a desulfurization process by known means which, in view of the high temperature of the casting of the iron, have a good yield.

   As a particular advantage, it is necessary to highlight the fineness of the structure and the improvement of the properties of the cast iron, obtained by the strong superheating. The low value cast iron obtained in the blast furnace can furthermore also be charged to the cupola either entirely or partially in granulated form, which allows the use of small caliber coke or inexpensive small caliber fuel.

   It is also possible to load the cast iron into the cupola, either entirely or partially in the fluid state. In addition, the invention extends to a modification of the process such that, under the conditions enumerated

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 The low value cast iron obtained at the Blast Furnace can be loaded into a cupola as described above, mixed with scrap, old cast iron or other ferrous elements, this mixture being able to be melted in the form of cast iron immediately pourable into castings. The principle of the process is not changed for this.

   In any case, it is decisive that the foundry products can be made from the greatest possible part of poor German ores thanks to a treatment at the Blast Furnace where the qualitative conditions of the additions are intentionally waived. , this function being transmitted to a cupola which operates in reduction mode according to the technique indicated above. The savings at the Blast Furnace are in this way more than sufficient to fully ensure the economy of the process.
