 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  STEAM OR GAS TURBINE.

   The present invention relates to a steam or gas turbine operating with intermediate superheating and in which the expansion of the working fluid takes place before the intermediate superheating and at least partially after the intermediate superheating in the same casing.

   Steam turbines of this kind have already been constructed in the manner shown in fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing. In this arrangement, the inlet pipe 1 for the live steam arriving in a first group of expansion stages 2, as well as the inlet pipe 3 for the flow of the working fluid leaving the intermediate superheater 5 and then arriving in the group of expansion stages 4, downstream of this superheater, are provided towards the middle of the turbine casing 6. The substantially axial flow in the two groups of stages 2 and 4 takes place from the middle towards the two ends of the casing 6, and the part of the working fluid which has passed through the group of stages 2 leaves the casing through a pipe 7, and then passes through a duct 8 into the intermediate superheater 5.

   The part of the working fluid which has passed through the group of stages 4 exits via a pipe 9 provided at the other end of the housing 6.

   The arrangement which has just been described offers the advantage that the temperatures of the working fluid are relatively low at the two ends of the housing 6, that is to say near the bearings 10 and 11 carrying the shaft 12 of the turbine. In addition, it is possible to avoid seals exposed to the pressure and temperature of live steam. On the other hand, this arrangement has certain drawbacks. Thus, during the initial heating of the turbine, and during the variations of the imposed load, the temperature differences appear essentially in the longitudinal middle of the casing, that is to say at the most long distance between the bearings 10, 11 and the bearing points of the housing 6.

   The latter therefore risks deforming under the action of these temperature differences, which can result in a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 friction of the rotor in the labyrinth seals in the middle of the turbine housing, that is to say precisely at the point where the seal must be ensured between the stage receiving the live steam and the stage receiving the first the steam coming out of the intermediate superheater. Given the large distance between the bearings, and taking into account the critical number of revolutions, the middle part of the turbine shaft also receives a relatively large diameter, which is defective in that the seal must be placed in this location to ensure separation between the two aforementioned pressures.

   To avoid this drawback, in a steam or gas turbine according to the invention, the inlet pipe for the part of the working fluid to be expanded in a first group of expansion stages, upstream of the intermediate superheater, is provided. at one end of the turbine casing, while the inlet pipe for the part of the working fluid to be expanded in a second group of expansion stages, downstream of the intermediate superheater, is provided at the other end of the crankcase. On the other hand, the outlet pipes of the two parts of the working fluid stream are arranged between the two groups of expansion stages.

   Fig. 2 of the drawing is an elevational view with partial axial section of an embodiment of such a turbine.

   In this figure 2, 20 designates a first group of five expansion stages and 21 m a second group of four expansion stages of a steam turbine. The group of stages 20 receives the live steam at high temperature from a pipe 22. This part of the working fluid having passed through the group 20 substantially in the axial direction leaves the turbine through a pipe 23 and passes through a duct 24 in a intermediate superheater 25. The part of the working fluid, brought in this superheater to a higher temperature, arrives via a duct 26 and a pipe 27 in the second group of stages 21 which it passes through in a substantially axial direction to leave the turbine by a pipe 28. The pipes 23 and 28 are separated by a common partition 29.

   If we take into account the direction of flow indicated by the arrows A, the group of stages 20 is therefore placed upstream and the group of stages 21 downstream of the intermediate superheater 25. On the other hand, the pipe 22 , through which the live steam arrives in the group of stages 20, is provided at one end of the turbine housing 30, while the turbulure 27, through which the working fluid leaves the superheater. intermediate 25 arrives in group 21, is provided at the other end of the housing 30. To complete it should be indicated that 31 and 32 denote two bearings placed respectively at the ends of the housing 30 and intended to support the shaft 33 of the turbine.

   In this arrangement shown in FIG. 2, the live steam and the working fluid leaving the intermediate superheater 25 enter respectively through one of the ends of the casing 30 of the turbine, while the parts of the working fluid, which have been expanded in the groups of stages 20 and 21 and which are therefore relatively cold, exit the turbine towards the longitudinal middle of the casing 30.

   In this place, the temperatures are relatively low, so that the risk of deformation of the housing between the bearings 31 and 32 is reduced. Since the part of the shaft 33 cooperating with the high pressure seal 34 having a relatively small diameter, leakage remains low even on the high pressure side of the turbine. In addition, the peripheral speeds occurring in this high pressure seal 34 are lower than in the arrangement shown in FIG. 1, which makes it possible to provide smaller clearances in this seal and thus to reduce leaks without resulting in reduced operating safety.

   This reduction in play is also possible by the fact that the high pressure seal 34 is provided at one end of the turbine shaft, directly next to the bearing 31 where the possible decentrings of the rotor are in any case much less than. those who can stand in the middle of the tree. Another advantage of this arrangement consists in that the reduction in the modulus of elasticity by the high temperatures of the working fluid can only occur at the ends of the turbine shaft, so that this phenomenon exerts on the name-

 bre of turns criticizes a much weaker action than in an arrangement such as shown for example - freeze 1.

   The steam exiting through the pipe 28 may undergo additional expansion in other stages, not shown. It can also be made to arrive in a device consuming heat, a condenser, etc.

   If it is necessary to provide a thrust bearing for the turbine shaft, this bearing can be advantageously arranged on the side of the housing corresponding to the inlet pipe, through which the working fluid arrives in the first group of stages. 20. In fact, given the relatively rapid expansion of the rotor during the start-up period, the axial clearances - in themselves small on the side of the entry of the movable blade of this group - increase, which helps to improve operational safety.

   It is true that the corresponding axial clearances of group 21 are simultaneously reduced, which is however of no capital importance because the length of the blading of this group of stages is already very great, so that it is It is possible, during the preparation of the design of the turbine, to provide for this group of relatively large axial clearances without resulting in a significant reduction in efficiency. During operation, these clearances can therefore be reduced without inconvenience.

   Of course, the invention is also applicable in the case where the working fluid to be expanded in the turbine is not steam but a gaseous fluid.
