 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  CEMENT AND SIMILAR MATERIAL BAKING PROCESS AND DEVICE
FOR ITS REALIZATION.

   The present invention relates to the firing of cement and similar materials in rotary tube kilns, during which the material placed in the firing tube is lifted with the aid of pallets or spoons placed against the interior wall of the kiln or by means of similar means, to be again distributed or delivered by the pallets which rise during the rotation of the furnace, and it consists in that this distribution of the material by the pallets, or their equivalents, is con- continued until they reach and pass the highest point of their circular path and, advantageously, until they have again shifted downward to a significant extent on the descending side of the rotating tube.

   It is thus obtained that practically the entire cross section of the cooking tube is traversed transversely or obliquely to longitudinally with respect to the axis of the cooking tube, by one or more curtains or veils almost without voids or gaps, formed by the falling material. The combustion gases of the cooking zone which pass through these curtains give up their heat in an extremely favorable manner to the material to be cooked, so that extremely complete utilization of the heat of the cooking gases is obtained. combustion and consequently great fuel economy.

   For carrying out this process, the numerous pallets, or their equivalents, of widely calculated dimensions are furthermore, according to the invention shaped and arranged so that when they move through the accumulation of material formed on them. the bottom of the cooking tube they entrain considerable quantities of material and then only drop it little by little.

   The fall of the material of each pallet therefore lasts a certain time, and during this time this pallet has then arrived beyond the highest point of its circular path and has already descended again to a considerable extent,
In order for the pallets to fill completely, the material

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 is strongly retained on the bottom of the cooking tube after it has already been loaded in abundant quantity. However, so that on this occasion it does not fall out of 1-end of the charging of the rotating tube., There is provided, at a certain distance from this end of the tube, thrust vanes, fixed to the wall of the tube. , which forcefully push the material forward towards the cooking zone.

   Therefore, in an area free from interior construction at the front end of the rotating tube, there is only, constantly, a little material, so that here the passage section for the combustion gases is very large, Optionally, a closed or annular core can be mounted here in the middle of the tube so that the freshly introduced material cannot immediately flow freely. This is particularly advantageous when the material is loaded in the form of shot.

   The invention is especially suited to the conversion of existing furnace installations of older type, when their profitability needs to be improved, since it can be incorporated into such furnaces with ease and without long interruption of operation. .

   The accompanying drawings schematically represent an embodiment.

   Figure 1 of these drawings is a longitudinal section of the charging end of a rotary kiln; FIG. 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of FIG. 3; Figure 3 is a partial section along the line III-III of Figure 1, on a larger scale; Figures 4 to 10 show details of other examples.

   The rotary oven 10 (Figure 1) is mounted on rollers 11 and is slowly rotated in the direction of the arrow x of Figures 2 and 3 by a control ,. not shown. In its front end or end open and surrounded by the foundation advances, from the latter, the casing or trough 13 in which there is provided a conveyor screw 14. This thoroughly stirs the raw material supplied. from the reservoir or magazine 16 through the pipe 15 and conveys it into the rotating tube 10. On the bottom thereof, the material spreads in a layer having a cross section in the form of a segment, which, by the revolution of the tube is driven up on one side.

   The combustion gases from the combustion zone, not shown, escape through the exhaust line 17, Here they can be conducted through a dust collector, from which the dust entrained by them can be brought back to be again loaded into the oven.

   At a certain distance from the inlet end of the rotating tube 10, there is left free in the coating or lining thereof an annular zone coated with a layer 19 of asbestos or a similar material.

  In this zone, there is arranged a ring of thrust pallets 13, the feet of which rest against the two edges of the coating, which has the effect of supporting both these pallets and the coating.

   The casing or cylindrical iron body of the rotating tube 10 is, at this point, already sufficiently protected from heat by the starter layer, because here the fresh material which has just been placed in the oven is still cold enough and that here the combustion gases from the furnace have already cooled down considerably. However, the annular reinforcement here acts as a retaining zone and produces the accumulation of material on the base of the rotary kiln, until the thrust vanes 18 grip it, push it forward in the axial direction and thus keep the entrance area free.

  The material thus arrives within the reach of the circulation pallets 20 erected along a helical line, by which it is transported further towards the lifting pallets 21. In the axis of the rotating tube, a fixed supply pipe 22 is provided. , which is bent down behind the lifting pallets 21 and opens here just above the oven floor.

  Through this pipe, by means of the blower 23, the aforesaid dust separated from the combustion gases, which has been captured, is brought to this point after

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 have been introduced through line 24. In front of the mouth or outlet of this supply line - when looking from the outlet end of the cooking tube - there is provided in the rotating tube 10 a retaining ring 25 'in order to strongly retain the material here and to involve the dust in this accumulation. The material passing over this retaining ring 25 'then comes within the reach of additional lifting vanes 26, which are disposed in the furnace tube in a helical line.

  They raise the matter again and let it fall again little by little, so that here there is formed transversely and obliquely parallel to the axis of revolution of the curtains without voids through which pass the gases of combustion. Behind this zone of lifting pallets, the load of the idler again accumulates on the bottom of the tube in front of the retaining ring 2511 which serves to protect the lifting pallets 26 already very close to the combustion zone. The vanes 20 do not need such protection because they are at a greater distance from the combustion zone and therefore the temperature of the gases is already lowered, especially since they are united in a crown and therefore themselves already act as a retaining ring.

   From the reservoir 16, a second fresh material line leads into the fixed casing 27 placed above the rotating tube 10 and containing a conveyor screw 28. By this route, additional fresh material is fed to the fixed sheath 29 surrounding the tube. rotary 10; it is raised during the rotation of the furnace by the rotary vanes 30 which rotate in the sheath 29 and it is introduced, through the openings 31 in the wall of the tube, inside the furnace, so that it arrives between the two retaining rings 25 'and 25 ", in the already heated material inserted by the screw 14 and is entrained by this material and quickly heated by it.

  This also effectively prevents overheating of the lifting pallets 26 located between the two retaining rings 25 'and 25 ".

  To also reduce the entrainment of dust by the escaping combustion gases, there is also mounted, in the area closest to the loading end of the rotating tube 10 and free from interior constructions, rotating vanes 32 , which through openings 33 are in communication with the interior of the tube and rotate in the fixed sheath 34 from which the exhaust duct 35 discharges the gases which have become practically dust-free as a result of the multiple changes of direction. tion.

   The pallets 20 can also be mounted in several rings placed next to each other, the pallets of each ring being tight against each other and forming a closed ring, but the pallets of the neighboring rings being however always offset between. They have a half pitch of the vanes, as shown in Figure 3. In addition, each vane consists of a wall 40 in the form of a non-round ring and is stiffened by a middle rib 41. The part of the wall 40, which is placed against the wall of the rotating tube has the same curvature as it, so that this part rests against the wall of the tube in a smooth and tight manner.

   From this part, the other two converging parts start at different angles so that the neighboring parts of the pallets are always placed against each other. The two chambers formed in the pallets of enantiomorphic shapes (that is to say identical but reversed and symmetrical with respect to a plane mirror) are in communication by an opening framed by the median rib 41. On the wall of the pallets, it is provided internally in the part facing the center of the rotating tube a retaining rib 42 parallel to the axis of the tube.

  Until this, the pallets are closed on both sides by side walls 43; but from this rib the wall of the pallets narrows on both sides, so that it ends in a point located forward during the rotation. The part that recedes back from this point towards the furnace tube will then widen again. The pallet is therefore tapered in the shape of a wedge, so that it cuts into the accumulated load, and its openings are located on both sides of the wedge, so that material enters them. This configu-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 The ration of the pallets has the effect that, as they pass through the material, they fill up completely with it, but do not let it escape downwards until little by little after the upward movement.

   The pallets can also have slits in the part of the wall facing the axis of the tube, as indicated at 39.

   The pallets are mounted on the lining 44 of the oven. Their part 45, placed against this coating, is fixed to the casing of the furnace by bolts 46 with rectangular head 47. Noses 48, provided on the wall 45, prevent rotation of the bolts 46. In addition, bolts 49, having noses 50, are stuck in conical holes in the wall 45, so that they too cannot turn. The threaded ends of the two bolts 46 and 49 project freely outside the casing of the rotating tube to such an extent that fixing nuts 51 can be screwed onto them.

   The threaded ends of bolts 46 and 49 are made of carbon steel, so that the screw threads can be cut easily and will not chip even when frequently screwing the nuts, while the ends of the bolts located inward of the rotating tube with the heads 47 as well as the noses 48 and 50 are made of highly refractory iron. The two parts of each bolt are welded together.

   Tubings or sockets 52 are welded to the inner side of the casing 10 of the tube. Their position is chosen so that the bolts 46 and 49 pass through them with play. The cross section of the sleeves is round or angular, advantageously square, which facilitates the jointing of the bricks of the covering 44. For each pallet, two are provided. bolts 46, placed on either side of the median rib 41, and two bolts 49, placed in the same way. These pallets can be easily and quickly removed and placed separately without the coating of the rotating tube being damaged.

   As all the threaded parts are outside the rotating tube, they are easily accessible and protected against damage of any kind by combustion. The fact that the bolts are four in number ensures the position of each pallet even in the event of stress caused on one side only by operation, but the play of the bolts in their sockets offers the possibility that possible tensions are easily offset. Even when the coating of the furnace is damaged, the position of the vanes remains secure, since the bushings serve as spacers. Material falling from the pallets always falls on diametrically opposed pallets, but not on the liner so that the liner cannot be touched and damaged.

   In a manner not shown, there may be provided behind the rotating tube a device for cooling the dust to be returned to the oven, which is particularly advantageous when the material to be fired is placed in the form of pellets and the dust is used to contribute to their manufacture.

   In the embodiment shown in Figures 4 and 5, there is provided, in the area of the rotary tube 61, in which the pallets 62 are located, an annular frustoconical core 63 whose small base is turned towards the discharge end. of the rotating tube 61 and which is fixed therein by supports, not shown. The material falling from the pallets 62 arrives on the outer surface of this core and spreads out further, sliding towards the discharge side of the rotating tube so that the free inner cross section of the core 63 is, as shown in the figure. figure 5, closed by a curtain, perfectly uniform and without solutions of continuity, of falling material.

   As the material is thus thrown towards the stripping end of the rotating tube - see figure 4 - the circular core 63 simultaneously has the effect of advancing the material. In the type of construction according to figure 6, the inner frustoconical core 68, provided in the rotating tube 66 in the region of the pallets 67, has its small base turned towards the charging side of the rotating tube, so that, all the other effects remaining the same, we obtain a slowing down of the passage of the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 material axially through the rotating tube.

   Cores of both kinds can be mounted in different areas of the rotating tube. Figure 7 shows how a biconical core 73 is placed between the pallets 72.

   In the rotating tube 76 of FIG. 8, there is provided on both sides of the biconical annular core 78, mounted between the vanes 77, rings 79 of simple frustoconical shape, the vanes 77 furthermore receive a width, in the direction axial, such that all the annular cores are loaded with the material falling from the pallets and that, in this way, several curtains of material are formed.

   To obtain a particularly intense axial advance of the material, all the frustoconical cores, arranged one behind the other, have, according to Figure 9, their small base turned on the same side in the rotating tube 81, in the region of the pallets 82, 83 .

   Finally, according to FIG. 10, conical segments 88 are attached directly to the vanes 87 of the rotating tube 86, so that no free space remains between the two.

   The installation according to the invention can be used not only for cooking purposes, but also for cooling and drying materials of all kinds, and this is the case in particular for the pallets described above. , in their arrangement on the inner wall of rotating drums.

   It may be advantageous to add to the furnace charge a material with a high heat absorbing capacity, for example pieces of strongly refractory material or already baked cement clinker.
