 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 1 est une vue en élévation et
Fig. 2 une vue en plan d'une disposition préférée;
Fig. 3 est une vue en plan d'une disposition semblable à celle des figures 1 et 2 convenant pour le traitement d'une feuille de verre plus large;
Figs.

  4 et 5, montrant des modifications;
Figs.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  DEVICE FOR MAINTAINING THE CONSISTENCY OF THE WORK PLAN OF THE TOOLS
SOFTENING AND / OR POLISHING.,
The present invention relates to apparatuses for the simultaneous smoothing and / or polishing of the two faces of a glass sheet, in which the glass sheet resting on conveyor members, generally rollers, passes between softening tools or polishers which rotate around axes perpendicular to the support plane of the sheet and are biased axially towards the respective faces of the latter.

   The object of the invention is to avoid bending stresses, which can cause the glass to break, axuels the sheet is subjected when, as a result of the wear of the tools and / or the axial displacement imparted to them to compensate for the When worn, the work surface of the lower tools ceases to be in alignment with the support plane of the sheet on the conveyors.

   This object is achieved, according to the invention, by providing stops intended to limit the axial movement of the tools towards one another so as to stabilize the working plane of the lower tools in the support plane of the glass sheet. .

   Stops are advantageously provided for the tools located on both sides of the sheet of glass, but it may be sufficient to provide them for the tools located on one side of the sheet only. Preferably, in both cases, the stops limiting the axial displacement of the tools located on one side of the glass sheet are arranged on the other side of the sheet and the tools bear on the stops via of the glass sheet itself, which ensures their good contact with the glass to be worked and allows automatic compensation for tool wear despite the restrictive action of the stops.

   In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the tools working one face of the sheet are offset from those working.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 on the other side, and the stops are arranged opposite the cantilevered parts of the offset tools which bear on them via the glass sheet. The constancy of the work plan of both upper and lower tools is thus positively assured.

   A satisfactory result can also be obtained by providing the stops only on one side of the glass sheet, on condition that the tools which cooperate with these stops are maintained on a pressure greater than or at least equal to the back pressure of the opposing tools, in order that they are not pushed away from the stops by the back pressure. In this variant, the tools located on both sides of the sheet can be concentric if the tools cooperating with the stops are given a diameter greater than that of the opposite tools, and if the stops are placed opposite each other. the cantilevered annular edge of larger diameter tools.

   The difference in d @ be of the tools and possibly the difference in working pressure of these can be compensated for by a difference in the speed of rotation of the tools so as to equalize the work on both sides of the sheet. glass.

   Whatever the case, the stops are advantageously constituted by support rollers which can be distinct from the normal support and drive rollers of the glass sheet, or merge with the latter.

   As usual, the tools on one side of the sheet of glass can be urged towards it simply by gravity, in order to exert the desired working pressure on the glass and to compensate for wear of the glass. tools by axial displacement to the extent permitted by the stops.

  For the opposing tools, a wear compensating device, mechanical or hydraulic, for example, suitable for keeping them in contact with the glass sheet under the desired pressure is provided.

   Embodiments of the invention are shown schematically by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view and
Fig. 2 a plan view of a preferred layout;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of an arrangement similar to that of Figures 1 and 2 suitable for processing a larger sheet of glass;
Figs. 4 and 5 are views of a variant, with partial cross-sections, taken respectively in a direction parallel and in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal members of the apparatus for smoothing and / or polishing the glass.

   Figs. 6 and 7 are views corresponding respectively to Figs.

  4 and 5, showing modifications;
Figs. 8 and 9 show, respectively in elevation and in plan, the application of the invention to tools mounted "in a roll".

   In all the figures, the sheet of glass to be worked simultaneously on both sides is designated by 1, the support and drive rollers of the sheet by 2 and 2 ', the tools working the upper side of the sheet. sheet by 3 and the tools working the underside. of the sheet by 4.

   In the preferred arrangement (figs. 1 and 2 or 3), the upper tools 3 are offset with respect to the lower tools 4 and the support rollers 2, 2 'placed between the tools, are also offset from each other so as to be facing the cantilever edges of the tools 3 and 4, for which they constitute stops stabilizing in the support plane of the sheet of glass on the rollers 2, the working plane of the tools 4.

   The arrangement according to Figure 3 is suitable for the treatment of glass sheets of great width where several tools are necessary to embrace the width of the sheet 1; it is also suitable when

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 imparts a transverse swing to the device spar.,
Figs. 4 and 5 show a variant in which the upper tools 3 have a larger diameter than the lower tools 4, and the latter are framed by support rollers 5 located in alignment with the support rollers 2 of the sheet. glass and constituting stops which limit the downward movement of the upper tools 3.

   In order for the upper tools 3 to bear on the support rollers 5, the back pressure P 'of the lower tools 4 must, in this arrangement, always remain less than or at the most equal to the pressure P exerted by the upper tools. .

   In Figures 4 and 5, the back pressure P 'is obtained using counterweights 6 integral with the cross member 7, by means of racks 8, 9 and toothed sectors 10. After commissioning by a gradual application and simultaneous tools on sheet 1, the stop 11 releases the upward movement of the lower tool whose pressure
P 'has been previously adjusted in such a way that P' P. The difference between the two pressures P and P 'is absorbed by the rollers 5 on which the upper tool is pressed.

   The 4 tools applied against the underside of the sheet
1 will maintain permanent contact with the latter by the action of the counterweights 6. As they wear out, the lower tools will rise, their stroke being constantly limited by the lower plane of leaf. The lifting of tools as and when they wear is automatic.

   Figures 6 and 7 include an arrangement where the hydraulic pressure developed on the pistons 12 by means of the pump 13 is used for lifting the lower tools.

   It will be understood that the operation will remain the same with the mounting of the "roller" tools, or any other grouping of the tools.

   An arrangement suitable for mounting with a knurled wheel "is shown schematically in Figures 8 and 9 where 4 denotes lower tools mounted as a knurled wheel and 3 denotes the upper tools also mounted as a knurled wheel. In operation, the tools 3 rotate while being suspended from the plates. - plates 14, their edges being supported by the rollers 5 while the lower tools 4 rotate on the plates 15.

   Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments and to the details of embodiment described and shown by way of example and it would not be outside its scope to make modifications thereto.
