1.- Austénisation au-dessus de la température de fin de transformation eutectolde suivie de trempe étagée;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

  COPPER CAST WITH TREATMENT FOR HIGH TENACITY.

   The invention relates to a process for treating white cast iron in order to obtain a high tenacity cast iron.

   It is known that copper and nickel facilitate the graphitization of cast irons both during the solidification of gray cast irons and during the annealing of white cast irons. it is also believed that nickel has a higher efficiency than copper., and it is common practice to put nickel up to 5% in high quality gray cast iron, but it is not customary to introduce copper or nickel in the white cast irons for malleable black core, the effect of these elements not being sufficient to compensate for the increase in price.

   The invention is characterized by this that, in white cast irons, copper can exhibit a very high and quite unexpected efficiency when the graphitization treatment is carried out in three successive phases:
1.- Austenization above the temperature at the end of the eutectoid transformation followed by staged quenching;
2.- Income and germination of the graphite by sudden or better gradual heating to a precise suitable temperature T of the order of 450 and of sufficient duration of the order of 48 h., 3.- Graphitization of the primary cementite by prolonged maintenance at a temperature significantly higher than the temperature at the end of the entectoid transformation, for example 12 h. at 895 or 3 h. to 900, followed for example by cooling in still air.

   To clearly demonstrate this new property of copper, it will be shown by examples that the action of copper is more effective than an equal quantity of nickel; if we notice that the nickel is about five times

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 more expensive than copper, the inefficiency at equal addition price is of a much higher order of magnitude, which is of considerable industrial interest.

   We can see the comparative mode of action of the elements copper and nickel by operating on eutectoid steels of composition similar to that of white cast iron, that is to say whose composition is obtained by deduction of cementite primary or proeutectoid.

   Four steels were cast then austenized at 810 30 minutes, quenched in oil, reheated 48 hours. at T, cooled in still air, warmed to 700 for 150 h. and finally cooled in still air. The average number N of graphite spherules formed per mm2 of section is given below next to the chemical compositions and for two values of T. For the optimum value T = 450, nickel does not provide any improvement compared to steels otherwise cast of the same composition, whereas copper, on the contrary, reveals the number of seeds per unit of section by 5,000.

If we now turn to the comparison of white cast irons for malleable, we see that the cast irons shown in the table below were sand cast in bars of 15 x 30 mm. and gave a white structure.

  They then underwent the following treatment range: austenization 810 duration 30 min., Salt quenching 1800 1 min. cooling in still air, reheating at T = 4500 48 h. still air cooling, reheating 885 10 h. still air cooling. In all cases, the graphitization of the primary cementite is complete.

We see that at equal concentration, copper leads to a number of graphite nodules 3.7 to 4 times greater.

   Assuming that nickel is 5 times more expensive than copper, the efficiency of copper is about twenty times greater than that of nickel at the price of addition.

   If, now, we make the comparison with castings of cast iron free of nickel and copper, cast under the same conditions as above and by performing the same pre-quenching. same germination treatment as above, but the graphitization cycle being 14 h. at 895, the slight coalescence of the graphite nodules slightly reduced the number.

The increase in the number of nodules reduced to the same addition concentration is 18 times higher for copper than for nickel.

  At equal price, the inefficiency of copper is 90 times greater than that of nickel.

   We know that, in malleable cast irons without special addition, the preliminary quenching must necessarily be martensitic, this is what was done in the aforementioned examples; but we have discovered this other remarkable property of copper, namely that it allows by bainitic pre-quenching to lead to a high number of fine nodules.

   The study of isothermal transformations made it possible to specify that the cast iron studied, austenized at 810 30 min., Then soaked in salt for 3 h. at 400, undergo a complete bainitic transformation. After preliminary soaking bathtub carried out under these conditions. germination of the graphite is carried out by annealing for 48 hours. at 450 and graphitization is then obtained by reheating to 895 and holding '14 h. calm air cooling followed.

   Then the cycles of this treatment, there is a return to ambient temperature, but it goes without saying that the passage could be carried out from 400 to 450, then to 895 without intermediate cooling and with the same result. we wanted to show this remarkable property of copper by carrying out the preliminary quenching at the same temperature as the graphite germination: for this purpose, the castings were austenized at 810 30 min., quenched at 450 and maintained for 48 h. at this temperature, then subsequently brought to 895 for 14 h. and finally cooled in still air.

   The following table gives, for these two treatment ranges and for the composition melts already. mentioned (always sand cast in bars of 15 x 30 mm. and with a perfectly white casting structure) p the results relating to the quantity of primary cementite possibly remaining Fe3C% and the number N of nodules or spherules of graphite by

   We see that copper is more efficient than nickel and that the last treatment is better than the first.

  The increase in the number of seeds at equal addition is 3.8 times greater for copper than for nickel with the first treatment and 12.3 times greater with the second.

  If we reduce to the same price of addition, copper would be 60 times more efficient than nickel.

   We can explain this action of the. copper by the fact that it is in the vicinity of the ternary eutectic content Fe - Fe3C- Cu, so that it partiaip entirely in the pre-quenching while remaining supersaturated in the iron. During the germination treatment at 450, it undergoes a centripetal migration which precedes its precipitation. This results in very high local increases in the copper concentration, so that in these regions the instability of the cementite is increased and that it decomposes giving very fine and very diffuse graphite, but which, in due to its stability, develops at the expense of primary cementite in the subsequent high temperature operation.

   Nickel, on the contrary, because of its high solubility in ferrite, exhibits the average composition everywhere and its efficiency remains low.

   In these copper smelting treatments, an essential feature is to observe both the succession of the three operations: preliminary quenching, germination around 450, consecutive graphitization at high temperature
An example is given by comparing the correct range with two other ranges where either the pre-quenching or the tempering for germination have been omitted.

It can be seen that only the triple treatment and the addition of copper make it possible to absorb all of the primary cementite and to have a high number of graphite nodules or spherules. This is an essential point of the invention.

   Another peculiarity is the care with which this temperature of 450 must be respected to lead to a good result, this results from the examination of the curves of fig. 1 and 11 corresponding to a period of keeping at the germination temperature respectively 48 and 96 hours. The curves relate to the same malleable cast iron of 'composition: C = 2.22'Si = 1.34 Mn = 0.65 Cu = 2 S = 0.12 P = 0.10 Al = 0.03 Ti = 0.06 .

  The influence of the maintein time as a function of the germination temperature is given in figure III.

  We see the benefit of observing a sufficient time to have a high number of graphite seeds and the economic disadvantage of excessively prolonging this time.

  Although the best result is obtained after 192 h at 450, a duration of 48 h. gives a practically equivalent result at a lower price. On the other hand, times less than 30 h. would unnecessarily sacrifice quality.

   With these 2% copper cast iron castings in sand and by correct treatment, the number of graphite nodules or spherules per mm2 is generally between 3,000 and 15,000 depending on the region and the thickness, the average diameter of the spherules of graphite is generally between 1 and 10 microns, more generally 4 microns.

   Another remarkable new property of copper malleable cast irons of the type which is the subject of the invention and of the new precise ranges of heat treatment is that they can extend the use of white cast iron to mold thicknesses greater than that of the same. conventional processes, while binding '4' at a time, white cast structure and graphitization ability, which are generally conflicting properties.

  According to the invention, these properties are reconciled by the fact that on solidification, the graphitizing action of 2% copper is compensated by the whitening action of a corresponding increase in manganese or by the introduction of molybdenum. or chromium, or the corresponding lowering of sili'cium,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 whereas at the time of the germination of the graphite at 450, this compensation no longer takes place due to the centripetal migration of the copper which precedes its precipitation and the very high local increases in concentration which result therefrom.

   A remarkable consequence of these new properties is the possibility by cupola melting, by refining or by reverberation furnace, by c-ou = lée in sand, to obtain castings of white structure which, after having undergone the triple treatment of pre-quenching, germination tempering, primary graphitization annealing, exhibit remarkable mechanical characteristics not yet achieved on white cast industrial cast iron to be malleable and this with very great manufacturing regularity resulting from both the effect of copper and the precision brought to the heat treatment without risk of cracking, thanks to the interrupted quenching and without deformation, due to the limitation of the highest temperature reached during the treatment.

   The favorable effect of copper can be combined with that of the additions of aluminum, titanium and zirconium, these three elements also having a favorable action for obtaining a high number of germs. when the rational process of controlled germination graphitization is employed. The following example relates to three castings of white cast iron cast in sand, and having undergone the following treatment: - heating at 810 30 mins salt quenching 180 lmn. cool-. in calm air - - reheating at 4500 48 h. cooling in still air - reheating at 895 2 p.m. still air cooling.

The mechanical properties which are easy to achieve with these moldings are generally at least equal to the following values for the test pieces taken by machining in bars and cooled in still air after graphitization for 14 h. to 895, so that the matrix is lamellar pearlitic:. The favorable effect of copper as an additive to cast irons in the three-phase processing persists when the castings subjected to it have been obtained in metal shell. If, as we can see, the germination temperature and the graphitization time are higher for copper-free cast iron than for that which contains it, it is because it was necessary to submit to these more expensive conditions. to get the most out of copper-free cast iron. For the latter, the results would be significantly worse than those shown in the table, if the germination had been carried out at a temperature as low as 450 and if the graphitization time had been as short as one hour. Compared to sand casting, shell casting has the advantage of making it possible to shorten the graphitization time at a determined temperature very significantly.

   Following the example above, the disappearance of the primary cementite is complete at 875 in one hour.

   Very satisfactory results can be obtained on shell cast copper castings with shorter germination times than that indicated in the example, for example 3 to 6 hours of temperature holding may be suitable.

   White moldings liable to the process can also be produced in molds the imprint of which consists of elements of relatively small thickness obtained by agglomeration of sand or other refractory material by means of a thermosetting organic plastic, for example.
