On.

IMPROVEMENTS TO MAGNETIC RECORDING HEADS.
The present invention relates to recording or reproducing heads used in magnetic signal or sound recording-reproducing devices, and more particularly to reproduction heads used with magnetic recording agents, certain parts of which form a step or step. step by overlapping.
In magnetic recording devices the reproducing head must generally be in contact, in order to function, with the magnetic recording agent. Thus, in devices having a step or step of the recording agent, there exists, when this step passes under the reproduction head, a time interval during which no signal can be recorded or collected and during which, in the devices known until now, all the syllables and even :, the words are lost.
This is particularly true in so-called "slow speed" devices.
We. substantially eliminates this gap, in accordance with the invention, by providing in the reproducing head a recessed rear pole piece which receives the overlapping or stepped portion and which allows the head to remain in contact with the recording agent substantially over the entire surface thereof.
The main object of the present invention is therefore to provide a reproduction head which substantially reduces the time interval during which it is not in contact with the recording agent.
Another object of the invention is to provide a reproduction head of a shape such that it remains in contact substantially over their entire surface with the recording agents of the step type.
The invention also proposes to provide a reproduction head having a new configuration, which was not previously known. present, and intended for magnetic recording and replaying devices.

production.
These objects, as well as other objects, will appear in the description which follows and which refers to the accompanying drawing in which
FIG. 1 is a partial section on a large scale taken in the vicinity of the pole pieces of a current reproduction head, assuming that the step overlap zone has just passed under the head and that the latter is making contact with it again. the recording agent.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but shows a reproduction head according to the invention, immediately before the step overlap area has passed under it.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but shows the head as the step overlap area has just passed under it.
In Fig. 1, the recording agent 10 is a layer of magnetic material applied to a sheet of paper or the like, as is well known in the art. agent 10, which is constituted by a sheet of generally rectangular shape in the embodiment considered here, is wound around a drum 12 (of which only part can be seen in the drawing) and its two edges overlap one another. on the other at 14. (This overlap is of sufficient length to compensate for any expansion or contraction of the recording agent and the drum which may occur as a result of changes in ambient temperature, humidity, etc.
The head of a common type already known is indicated at 16 and has a recording contact surface having a generally smooth and continuous configuration and the approximate shape of a circle or a ring. (Dashed line 17 shows the position of the head immediately before the step overlap begins to move under it).
When the recording agent moves in front of the current head 16, there is an interval d, which can easily be seen in FIG. 1, during which the reproduction head 16 is no longer in contact with the recording agent; this interval corresponds to the time during which the head descends from the edge 18 of the step due to the overlap. As is well known in this technique, it is possible to have no recording during this interval, the duration of which varies depending on the thickness of the recording agent, its speed of rotation and the shape of the head.
With that kind of construction, syllables and even. entire words may be lost during this interval. In dictation machines, to which the present invention is particularly applicable, the loss of a syllable can change the meaning of an entire sentence. It is obvious that great precision is essential in reproduction and that an interval such as interval d is to be avoided.
As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3, the gap d is virtually eliminated, in accordance with the invention, for all common uses, since it is reduced to an excessively small distance of ′. This elimination of the gap d is achieved by providing a notch 20 in the rear edge of the rear pole piece of the head 16a, the configuration of this notch corresponding roughly to that of the step overlap.
This indentation has a depth greater than the thickness of all the recording agents of different types that can be used, so that its upper surface 22 can never come too close to the recording agent, The wall before the notch is close to the gap 24 of the head, but is however separated from this gap by a sufficient distance to achieve the flux density which is necessary to obtain a correct recording.
Thus, when the recording agent passes under the reproducing head, the latter moves in the usual way on the surface of the agent, but when it reaches the overlap step it falls almost immediately. on the lower portion of the agent, the indentation receiving the upper part of the cover, so that lost signals are negligible.

The foregoing embodiment has been described in its application to a drum type recording medium with an overlapping recording agent. It is evident that the present invention is also applicable to other types of overlapping recording agent devices such as the well known magnetic tape devices overlapping mating, overlapping magnetic belts supported on a series of rollers or between two. axes etc.
