SOUPAPE THERMOSTATIQUE PERFECTIONNEE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Ces objets ainsi que d'autres apparaîtront au cours de la descrip- tion qui va suivre et qui est faite en se référant au dessin annexé sur lequel: la figure 1 est une vue en plan par dessus d'une soupape du type papillon commandée thermostatiquement, conforme à la présente invention ; la figure 2 est une coupe transversale de la soupape faite sensi- blement par II-II de la figure 1 ;
la figure 3 est une coupe transversale de la soupape faite sensi- blement par III-III de la figure 1 ; la figure 4 est une coupe transversale de la soupape faite par III-III de la figate 1, mais elle- représente le papillon amené par bascule- ment en position ouverte, à la suite d'un défaut de fonctionnement de l'élé- ment thermostatique ; la figure 5 est une vue partielle agrandie représentant la liai- son à saillie conique et à fente entre le boîtier de soupape et la cage por- tant les éléments sensibles à la température ; la figure 6 est une coupe faite sensiblement par VI-VI de la fi- gure 5 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

PERFECTED THERMOSTATIC VALVE.
The present invention relates to improvements to thermostatically controlled valves, particularly suitable for use in automobile cooling devices.
The present invention relates to thermostatic controlled valves of the improved but simple butterfly type of simpler structure, more compact, more economical and more efficient than in the past.
It also relates to a type of butterfly valve without a stem or hinge pin, having more effective contact with the edge of the valve orifice when it is closed, comprising simplified means for connecting the valves together. constituent parts, so as to avoid liquid leakage beyond the points of contact of the parts constituting the whole structure
It further relates to a thermostatically controlled butterfly valve, particularly suitable for use in cooling devices of internal combustion engines in which the thermostat used comprises a plunger which can exit it, and in which the thermostat ,
the valve and the various connecting members are constructed and arranged in such a way that the throttle tilts into the open position and that it remains there if it comes to present a malfunction.
The structure according to the present invention comprises an annular valve casing or housing and, in the vicinity of an opening of the housing, a butterfly-type valve associated with this orifice; a casing or cage constituting an oscillating support for a temperature sensitive element which is connected so as to control the throttle. This cage is connected to the housing by a connection with conical projection and slot arranged so as to prevent liquid leakage at this location, and the temperature sensitive element is also arranged, relative to the butterfly, so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
any malfunction of the throttle will only occur in its open position.
These and other objects will become apparent from the description which follows and which is made with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a thermostatically controlled butterfly valve , according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a cross section of the valve taken substantially through II-II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross section of the valve taken substantially through III-III of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a cross section of the valve taken by III-III of fig 1, but it shows the throttle brought by tilting into the open position, following a malfunction of the element thermostatic; Fig. 5 is an enlarged partial view showing the conical protrusion and slit connection between the valve housing and the cage supporting the temperature sensitive members; Figure 6 is a section taken substantially through VI-VI of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a cross section of a valve according to the present invention showing an alternative embodiment; Figure 8 is a vertical section taken in the transverse direction of Figure 7.
The embodiments of the present invention shown in the drawing include an annular valve housing or housing 10. This housing may be attached, in a suitable manner and in any desirable manner, to a pipe fitting or water jacket structure of an internal combustion engine, in which the coolant circulates in such a manner as to control the temperature. temperature and flow of the coolant through a valve generally represented by 11, which here is a butterfly valve. The housing 10 can be formed by stamping metal from a sheet or a plate of any suitable material, thus allowing economical mass production.
The housing 10 has an annular flat upper portion 12 the inner edge of which forms a valve orifice 13, and a frustoconical wall extending downwardly and outwardly with a lower edge 14 projecting outwardly. , which may rest on one end of a duct or part of a wall of the engine cooling system.
The valve port 13 (Figure 1) is generally circular in shape, 9 it is divided into two halves at the connection point of which are two tabs 15-15 spaced inward.
The spaces between these tabs form two slots 16-16 diametrically opposed to each other and arranged on a straight line which generally defines the pivoting zone of the butterfly 11.
Likewise, the butterfly 11 can come from a metal stamping which can be done economically in a suitable stamping installation. The butterfly 11 comprises two laterally offset flaps 17 and 19, extending in opposite directions from the center of the butterfly and parallel to each other. These flaps are joined by an intermediate part 20 extending generally perpendicular to the flaps 17 and 19.
The height of the perpendicular intermediate part is determined by the thickness of the annular part of the housing delimiting the valve orifice, and it is such that a flap 17 is placed on the upper face of the valve orifice 13. and that the other flap is placed on the underside of the valve orifice, when the throttle is closed, as shown.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can be seen in Figures 1 and 3.
In addition, the overall surface of the butterfly
11, which generally has the shape of a disc with the exception of the fixing means, is such that, when the throttle is in the closed position, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the throttle protrudes over the edge of the valve orifice, halfway up the upper edge of the annular part 12 delimiting the valve orifice 13 and halfway down its lower edge, so as to stop the flow of fluid through this orifice. Two legs 23-23 extend in opposite directions from the flap 19 of the butterfly 11, in the vicinity of the part 20 at right angles.
These tabs extend laterally, beyond the edge of the valve orifice 13 and it can be seen that they bear against the underside of the annular part 12 delimiting the valve orifice. The marginal edges of these tabs come into contact with the annular part 12 when the butterfly opens completely, so as to keep the latter in position,
The butterfly 11 can therefore be placed in the slots 16 -16 from the underside of the bolier by first placing the flap 17 in these slots until the right-angled part comes into contact with them.
We can then rotate the butterfly around the part at right angles, to 1, 'bring in the closed position. In this way, the throttle can be easily placed over the valve orifice by simple maneuvering and, of course, the inner edges of the slots 16-16 can extend inwardly of the periphery of the valve. The valve port 13, so that the flap 17 covers the upper half of the annular surface 12, at the same time as the slots 16-16.
We see, in Figures 2, 3 and 4, a lug or lug 24 which is directed downward from the flap 17 and which extends transversely to the pivot axis of the butterfly 11. This lug can be attached to the butterfly in a suitable manner, for example by riveting.
A yoke 25 extending upwardly from a piston 26 is hinged to the inner side of the lug 24. The yoke 25 extends along the opposing sides of the lug 24 and can be elastically or electronically inserted. matting on an upper part, comprising a groove, of the piston 26 on which it is mounted so as to be able to pivot therein. The piston 26, in turn, may exit from a cylinder 29 included in a temperature sensitive member 30, which is mounted so as to be able to operate. oscillate in the vicinity of its lower end, in a casing or cage 31, as will be seen more clearly below during the description.
The pivot axis of a pin or pin 27 is slightly offset laterally with respect to the pivot axis of the butterfly 11 and it is also offset inwardly of the latter, as shown in FIG. 3. butterfly 11 comprises recessed parts 32 and 33 formed respectively in the bottoms of the flaps 17 and 19. It is possible by stamping to give these recessed parts of the flaps a shape such that they receive the yoke 25 and that they allow the Complete opening of the throttle without interfering with the operation of the yoke and throttle.
These recessed parts are arranged, relative to the yoke and to the aforementioned ear, so that the piston 26 can tilt relative to the cylinder 29 to take the position shown in FIG. 4, when the temperature rises by a excessively and in the event of thermostat malfunction.
An orifice 35 is made in the shutter 19 of the butterfly. The purpose of this hole is to allow air to pass through the throttle, so that the radiator can be filled when the throttle is closed.
The cage 31 has the general shape of a U of which the walls 36-36 es-, -jacées parallel extend upwards from the opposite sides of a spacer or "bridge" 37 forming part of this cage and matching d In general, the curvature of the housing 10. The cage 31 can also be formed by stamping a metal. The bridge 37 comprises a part 39 pierced with a central orifice intended to receive the lower cylindrical part 40 of the element 30 sensitive to temperature.
Bridge 37 is distorted in the vicinity
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the edge of the orifice 39 at diametrically opposed points, during stamping, so as to form rounded projections or ribs on which rests, so as to be able to oscillate, a circular part 42 of greater diameter of the temperature sensitive element 30, which allows this element to oscillate and follow the lug 24 during the opening and closing of the butterfly. The bridge 37 also constitutes a seat for a coil spring 43 shown here in the form of a conical spring which has relatively few turns and whose diameter decreases from bottom to top.
The spring 43 has an upper part 44 in the form of a hook, which is an integral part thereof, and which engages at right angles to the coils of the spring in a slot 47 directed outwards and made in the lug 24. The hook 44 opposes the action of the edge of the slot 47 at a point which is laterally offset from the pivot axis of the throttle, and it keeps this throttle closed, except when the latter is opened by the throttle. temperature sensitive element 30. The spring 43 is held in position on its seat by two projections 49-49 crimped on the lower turn of this spring.
These protrusions are formed by stamping from the walls 36-36 of the cage 31 and can be crimped onto the spring at the time of valve mounting, which is a simple and effective way to easily attach the spring to the cage. , particularly when we want to manufacture the device in large series.
The cage 31 is fixed to the housing 10 by conical tabs 50-50 which form an integral part of the vertical walls 36-36 of this cage and which are directed upwards from them. The tabs 50-50 pass through rectangular slots 51-51 formed in the annular part 12 of the housing 10, and their outer ends can be mated or folded down so that these tabs completely fill these slots and they fix. the cage 31 securely to the housing.
It will be noted that all the sides of the tabs 50-50 are tapered, so as to converge towards their upper ends, and when they are folded or mated so as to rivet the cage to the case, they completely fill these slots which makes them. completely closes and prevents liquid leakage. This provides an economical and sealed means for securing the cage 31 to the housing 10, which assembly can be carried out in a simple and easy manner in mass production.
The temperature sensitive member may have the well known structure of an expandable type of actuator type, utilizing a temperature sensitive member consisting of a preformed body contained in a housing to cause a piston to exit. of a cylinder under the effect of a relatively high pressure, or it may comprise high molecular weight alkaline substances or similar substances intimately mixed with a finely divided heat-conducting material contained in the cylinder. a housing.
The spring 43 engaging in the slot 47 at its end of smaller diameter, and resting at its end of larger diameter on the bridge 37 to which it is fixed by the projections 49-49 crimped on it, and previously subjected to a load so that its action is exerted on the element 11 when the latter is closed, and the fact that its point of connection with the butterfly is away from the piston 26 towards the edge of the butterfly, the lever arm on the butterfly increases as it closes, which provides the advantage of obtaining more effective sealing pressure than that obtained hitherto.
The spring 43 has relatively few turns in view of its length, is dimensioned and loaded, and it is connected to the butterfly at a location which, when the coolant of the cooling device reaches a boiling temperature. , the piston 26 can freely exit the cylinder 29 of the temperature sensitive element.
When this occurs, the spring 43 swings the piston relative to the cylinder, assuming a position analogous to that shown in Figure, 4, and firmly holds the throttle in an open position. When
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
if this occurs, the cost of the thermostatic device must be removed and it can only be reused after repair.
Referring to Figure 4, it will be appreciated that the spring 43 has an oscillating action when tilted to an open position and that its oscillating action, together with its conical shape , serve to limit the reaction of the spring to the load on the piston to a safety value.
Likewise, because this spring exerts an action on the throttle near the outer end thereof, the force to return the throttle to its seat from the spring increases as the valve closes and returns. The action of the spring on the throttle automatically decreases as the throttle opens, allowing a weaker spring to be used than before and limiting the reaction to the spring load on the piston to a safe value when throttle moves to come to an open position.
You can mount the piston 26 in. the cylinder 29 with a relatively large play, so that it can move freely in the cylinder and that it can come into its tilted or raised position with respect to the cylinder, when it takes there its maximum extension shown in figure 4.
Note that when the piston has taken its maximum extended position and the throttle is fully open, its offset or shoulder portion 20 rests on the upper portion of the annular flat surface 12 and the tabs 23- 23 are in contact with the underside of this upper surface, which limits the movement of the throttle beyond a fully open position. Likewise, the yoke 25 is housed inside the recessed part 33 of the flap 19, which (a) prevents this yoke from having a tendency to come into contact with the flap 19 during the exit of the piston 26, (b) limits the opening displacement of the throttle, (c) allows sufficient displacement of the piston and the throttle to come into the tilted position shown in Figure 4.
Although the spring 43 can be loaded and sized so as to allow the piston to exit the temperature sensitive member when the coolant exceeds its boiling point, it should be understood that one can charge and dimension this spring so that it allows the piston to exit the cylinder at various desired temperatures, either just below the boiling point, or at temperatures considerably higher than the boiling point, when it is desires, so as to eliminate the malfunctions of the device and the gumming of the open throttle, in the event that there are momentarily boiling temperatures and where they last, as long as the release by boiling of the liquid from cooling is prevented.
It should be noted that, when the throttle is in the closed position, the fluid pressure exerted on its underside tends to keep the throttle in close sealing contact with the upper and lower flat surfaces of the orifice 13. Given that that the flap 19 of the butterfly is subjected to the pressure of the fluid and that only a part of the fly 17 is subjected to this pressure, the butterfly 19 is held tightly upwards against the underside of the flat surface delimiting the opening 13, and it is maintained in this position by this pressure, until it is positively opened by the heat generated by the operation of the engine and until the piston 26 exits from the cylinder 29.
It should also be noted on the one hand that the temperature-sensitive element 30, which is mounted with sufficient play in the pierced part 39 of the bridge 37, is carried by the projections 41-41, and that it oscillates around these during the opening and closing movements of the butterfly 11, on the other hand that the temperature-sensitive element has operating limits corresponding to those of the butterfly when the latter is open, and that its free assembly and oscillating on deck 37 allows him to come to the

immediate vicinity of the throttle in the path of its movement, and that it 'allows the throttle to tilt to its fully open position shown in Figure 4,
in the event of a malfunction of the temperature-sensitive element -
In the alternative embodiment according to the invention, shown in Figures 7 and 8, the butterfly valve and the actuator of the temperature sensitive type are the same as those shown in the figures. 1 to 6, so there is no need to repeat the description. In this variant, we see a casing 10a forming a support, which is similar to the casing 10, but which has a lower edge ¯19- oriented outwards from a relatively short cylindrical casing wall., This variant achieves a housing structure requiring less metal than the housing shown in Figures 1-4.
The housing 10a comprises a flat annular part 12a, the inner edge of which forms a valve opening 13. The valve port 13a has spaced inwardly directed tabs 15a-15a, and the spaces between these tabs are formed by diametrically opposed slots (not shown), similar to slots 16-16, within which the butterfly 11 is mounted so as to move and pivot therein
The butterfly 11 comprises a connecting lug or ear 53, which is fixed for example by riveting to a butterfly flap 17a which it extends downwards. The tab 53 has an inner end portion 54 in the form of a fork, which is pierced with a hole to receive a pin or transverse pivot pin 57.
A piston 55, of a type of actuator of a temperature sensitive member 56, extends between the legs of the fork portion 54 and is hinged there by means of the fork. pivot axis 57. The temperature sensitive element 56 is in oscillating contact with protrusions or ribs 41a, 41a of the bridge 37a, which form part of a casing or cage 37 supporting this temperature sensitive element between them. limits of operation of the throttle 11 and during its travel when it moves to come into an open position. The projections 49a-49a serve to crimp a spring 43a on the bridge 37a and to maintain tension therein when one of its ends 44a is connected to the tab 53.
It can be seen that the spring 43a has fewer turns than the spring 43, to allow freer opening of the butterfly. This also allows the throttle to be in contact with the smaller diameter turns of the oscillating spring, as the throttle opens into a wide open position thus allowing the throttle to swing to its full position. open position. However, it is obvious that one can vary the number of turns of the spring according to the conditions necessary for the operation of the butterfly, as well as the diameter of the wire and the required diameter of the turns of the spring.
The piston 55 can be mounted with a certain clearance in the cylinder of the temperature sensitive element 56, and it can swing in the turns of the spring, to put itself in a position corresponding to the opening of the throttle. when the engine temperature becomes too high.
The thermostatic valve shown in Figures 7 and 8 therefore operates in the same way as that shown in Figures 1 to 4, and not only does it have the same advantages as the valve described first, but also its manufacture is simpler and more economical than that of said valve
It is understood that the embodiments described above and shown in the drawing have been given only as an indication and that various modifications can be made to them without thereby departing from the spirit. of the present invention.
