 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   ARC BLOWING DEVICE, MORE SPECIFICALLY IN CIRCUIT BREAKERS, -ELECTRICAL MACHINES AND FUSES.

   The cases where the circuit breakers or fuses with high breaking capacity cut the violent overloads for which they are designed are, in practice, very rare.

   Experience has shown that in almost 90% of outages caused by overload devices, either in circuit breakers or, more specifically, in fuses with high breaking capacity, they were only overcurrents not exceeding 2 to 10 times the rated current.

   However, the interruption of a relatively less significant overload by fuses with very high breaking capacity is expensive as a result of the sizing of the latter. As a result, breaking devices fitted in installations where strong short-circuit currents could possibly occur should be designed in such a way that the fuse or the device can interrupt, not only lower overloads. of importance which normally occur, but where appropriate, violent overloads corresponding to the intensity of the short-circuit.

   For example, a high voltage fuse should be designed in a simplified form corresponding to the interruption of overloads of the order of 10 to 15 times the nominal current, and be provided with an additional device which would not intervene. only when the overloads exceeding the above-mentioned limits are interrupted.

   In this case, one can design a fuse with easily replaceable wires and not housed in the extinguishing liquids or in the powders promoting the extinction of the arc. An automatic circuit breaker could also be sized for the normal interruption of an overcurrent of 10 to 15 times the nominal current with an additional device for extinguishing the arc, at the time of the appearance of short circuits. violent.

   The above-mentioned problem is solved, according to the subject of in #

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 vention, as follows:
The additional device for the extinction of the arc at the time of violent overloads is designed as a hermetically sealed bomb containing compressed gases and, possibly, a combination of extinguishing liquids fulfilling at the same time the role of a hy- hydraulic system with compressed gases, the valve or the diaphragm hermetically closing the canister being opened, or deflowered, only in the event of the interruption of overloads exceeding the normal breaking capacity of a circuit breaker or a fuse.

   According to another variant of the invention, the same device can be applied universally in places where electric arcs or even fires caused by them can occur, and more especially in combination with ultra-fast high-speed circuit breakers. breaking capacity mounted directly on the generator and controlled by the rotating masses of the latter (as it results from patent no. 511,619, more particularly by the rotor). In this case, the opening of the valve of the bomb filled with compressed gas or the defloration of the membrane is particularly easy given the great mechanical energy reserved for this operation.

   According to the object of the invention, small bombs filled with compressed gas, more especially G02, the gas outlets of which are closed by a thin welded membrane, as used are used. for example commonly to obtain carbonated water and which are mass-produced with good results.

   For the arc blowing in circuit breakers with very high breaking capacity and voltage of 120,000 volts, there are 300 to 700 DM3 to be projected on the initiated arc, in order to obtain extinction and 30 to 100 liters in compressed air circuit breakers for medium voltages, that is to say up to 30,000 volts (breaking capacity approximately 100,000 KVA), the gas pressure reaching 5 to 20 kgs / cm2. However, a small bomb 10 cms high and 4 cms in diameter can contain 60 DM3 of extinguishant gas at 10 atmospheres or 120 DM3 at 20 atmospheres, that is a quantity largely sufficient to interrupt the powerful electric energies.

  The quantity of gas could be considerably reduced if one used, instead of compressed air, gases which are more energetic for the extinction of the arc or extinguishing liquids under gas pressure.

   According to another variant of the invention, the blowing process takes place first of all by a powerful jet of extinguishant liquid in the arc, followed by a gas jet, the extinguishant liquid arranged in the receptacle. containing the compressed gas which can serve at the same time as a hydraulic valve.

   The aforementioned principle and its practical and simple implementation will emerge best from Figures 1 to 7 where Figure 1 shows a high breaking capacity fuse with two symmetrical bombs, deflowered by mechanically controlled needles.

   FIG. 2, the device of a fuse opening the interchangeable bombs containing the extinguishing gases and liquid by a maxima electromagnet or by an electrodynamic device.

   FIG. 3 represents the fusible wire device used in the device according to FIG. 2, while FIGS. 4 and 7 diagrammatically represent an example of the needle device deflowering gas bombs.

   FIG. 5 represents, according to the object of the invention, the electrodynamic device pushing the bomb containing the compressed gases against the fixed deflowering needle. On the other hand, FIG. 6 represents another variant of the same device, the deflowering needle being housed at

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 inside the bomb and controlled by a core of an electromagnet with magnitude or by an electrodynamic device, these devices being able to be used in other applications for example as extinguishers of "flash" between the brushes of the commutators , etc ...

   The fuse, according to figure 1, consists of a metal cover 1 which can serve at the same time as a socket, in which are housed two small bombs 2 and 3 containing the compressed gases, possibly with liquid. fire extinguisher, the gas outlet orifices of which penetrate into the chamber (4) preferably of insulating material, containing the fusible wire 5 suspended between the support of the current outlet collar 6. A needle system 7a , 7b, connected in the form of a toggle by axis 8 is provided to deflower the compressed gas outlet orifices at the moment when energetic intervention in the blowing process is required (these needles resting on the membrane 9 and 9a (fig. 4 or 7) hermetically closing the opening of the small bombs 2 and 3).

   The toggle is linked with the piston 10 attracted in the direction of the arrow S by the spring 11, said piston preferably being located above the orifices covered by the membrane 9,9a.

   The flexible cover 12 can be detached from the enclosure 4 at the moment when the pressure therein reaches a determined limit.

   The device works as follows:
In the event of overloads that commonly occur and do not exceed a determined value, for example 10 to 15 times the nominal current, the fuse wire (which can be specially for an overcurrent of this overload order housed freely in the protective enclosure ,) melts without involving the compressed gas bomb, the slight increase in the pressure of the gases produced by the volatilization of the fusible wire being insufficient to actuate the piston 10 controlling the needles 7a, 7b, deflowering the bombs 2 and 3.

   On the other hand, in the event of a violent overload cut-off, the compressed gases in the chamber 4 set the piston 10 in motion, deflowering the orifices 9,9a of the bombs, the needles 7a, 7b then withdrawing from the orifices at the moment. where the toggle 7a, 7b, 8 exceeds the dead center 0, 0 '. At this moment, the gases promoting the extinction of the arc are directed towards it, and the pressure in the enclosure 4 having reached a determined value, blows the cover 12 to cause their escape and ex - expansion.

   In FIG. 2, the defloration of the bomb 2 is carried out by a system similar to that described above, the toggle being controlled by the core 13 of an electromagnet 14 or by an electro-dynamic system. The operation causing the defloration of the above-mentioned bomb 2 can be obtained, according to the object of the invention, by an electromagnetic or electrodynamic device shown in FIGS. 5 and 6.

   The bomb 7 supported in the normal position by the spring 27 or the membrane 27a is provided with a conductive ring 25 disposed against the coil 24 (or coil thereof) through which the main current to be monitored.

   The cover 9 is placed against the needle 23. At the time of strong short circuits, the bomb is pushed back by the electroedynamical forces exerted between the ring 25 and the turns 24 against the needle 23.

   Another alternative, still according to the object of the invention, is shown in FIG. 6 in which the core 13 carrying the needle 26 is attracted by the winding 14 arranged outside the bomb, the core 13 being accelerated by the magnetic field created by the aforementioned winding during the path X striking the stud 28 on the rod

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 26 and thus destroying the membrane by its kinetic energy (mv2).

   According to the object of the invention, the fusible wire consists of two parallel branches 15 and 16 (fig. 3), the branch 16 being dimensioned in such a way that it melts before the branch 15.

   The branch 16 is preferably made as a wire housed in the tube 17, the enlarged orifice 18 of which is opposite the orifice 19 of the bomb 2.

   At the time of strong overloads or short circuits, the value of which can be adjusted by the spring 22 supporting the movable core 13, the blowing process develops as follows:
After the membrane 9 has deflowered by the needle system controlled by the core 13, the extinguishant liquid 20 is projected into a tube containing the fusible wire 16, discourcing by its fusion the resistant wire 15, the system of two parallel fuse branches thus behaving as resistance circuit breaker.

   The extinguishing liquid can be followed by the gases promoting the extinction of the arc (of reduced importance) caused by the melting of the branch 15. It can be seen that the device described above eliminates the great drawback of fuses known until now. now consisting of the need to change the entire cartridge when it has been operated at relatively harmless overloads, as is observed in most cases.

   It is perfectly possible to execute the fusible wires in a manner which allows their rapid replacement on site.

   The same principle can be used in any circuit breaker device. It suffices to insert, under the contacts of these devices, the outlet opening for the extinguishing liquids or the compressed gases contained in the enclosure; the opening of said enclosure being caused by an electromagnet with maximum intensity or by an electro-dynamic device.
