 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   PROJECTILE FOR MORTARS.

  (having been the subject of a patent application filed in Finland on April 18, 1953 in the name of tommerfors
 EMI1.1
 Linne- och Jern-Manufaktur Aktie-Botag - declaration by the applicant -).

   The present invention relates to projectiles for trench and field mortars.

   A trench or field mortar is a weapon for shooting with projectiles stabilized by fins or not rotating, with a certain rise, usually not less than 40. This mortar comprises a smooth-bore barrel, the lower end of which or the breech of which is intended to rest by a ball or cardan joint on a plate reinforced by ribs, which transmits to the ground the shocks resulting from the firing and recoil. The muzzle of the canaon is carried by a cradle provided with a set of coil springs and intended to be resiliently attached to a two-legged support or to a tripod.

   Weapons of war intended to launch projectiles with a speed of "Mach" index of less than 1 are already known. Projectiles have recently been constructed which maintain their stability between the Mach indexes 1 and 1.3, but the range of these projectiles is limited by the fact that the fins, which collide with the resistance of the air, tend to reduce the ballistic efficiency of the projectile in a proportion approximately in relation to the thickness of the fins. However, the thickness of the fins cannot be indefinitely reduced because the latter must normally resist the reaction forces of the turbulent gases in the barrel.

   The object of the present invention is to shield the fins from the action of the gases by using an appropriate shutter which separates the fins completely from the powder chamber proper.

   To better understand the invention, it will be described below

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 by way of example with regard to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which is a side elevational view, with peerages in section, of the mortar projectile as it is disposed in the barrel of a mortar.

   It can be seen from the drawing that the projectile comprises a metallic main body 1 filled with an explosive charge with a detonator 2 fixed to the anterior end, and having at the posterior end a tail 3 on which are mounted suitable fins. 4. On the tubular part of the tail is fixed a conical nozzle 5 directed towards the rear in which is formed a longitudinal chamber 6 which is to receive the launch cartridge. The rear end of the nozzle 5 carries a bucket for igniting the launch cartridge and intended to receive the primer.

  The nozzle 5 also has lateral orifices 8 for the passage of the gases of the explosive charge contained in the chamber 6. The nozzle 5 is surrounded by a shutter 9 having conical channels and provided with a central extension 9. 'extending backwards. In this extension are made lateral orifices 8 'which are placed opposite the orifices 8 of the nozzle 5. In addition, the rear end of the shutter 9 is recessed into a cylindrical chamber 10, which communicates by means of orifices with chamber 6 receiving the launch charge, but which has no exhaust orifice
The largest diameter of the shutter 9 is slightly greater than the largest diameter of the set of fins and it is almost equal to the inner diameter of the barrel web.

   The projectile for mortars according to the invention therefore enters the barrel through the part indicated at 11, where the diameter of the shutter is the largest. As shown in the drawing, the shutter 9 has on the periphery of the part 11 two peripheral grooves 12, so that this periphery is divided into three ribs having equal diameters and intended to slide in the soul of the cannon. The grooves 12 intervene to prevent the pressurized gases from expanding beyond the space between the core of the barrel and the shutter 9, in the part of the barrel containing the projectile fins.

   In the embodiment shown, the angle at the apex of the outer cone of the nozzle 5 is greater than that of the Morse cone. On the other hand, said angle must be small enough to respond to the aerodynamic profile of the projectile on its trajectory in the air, thanks to which the resistance of the air decreases and results in a corresponding increase in the range of the projectile. projectile. The shutter 9, having conical channels and surrounding the nozzle 5 to push it, and consequently to push the whole of the projectile introduced into the barrel to give it the necessary speed is intended to be torn from the barrel. projectile as soon as it leaves the barrel. This separation is mainly ensured by the pressure of the gases introduced into the chamber 10 by the launch cartridge.

   These gases exert their action on the rear wall and push it to disengage it from the nozzle 5. The resistance of the air also contributes to tearing the shutter 9 from the nozzle 5.

   The use of the device which has just been described makes it possible to reduce the thickness of the fins to a proportion less than one fifth of the usual thickness, which appreciably increases the range of the projectile.

   Of course, the above description only indicates one embodiment of the projectile. Without departing from the principle of the invention, one can imagine other shapes to obtain the same effect. For example, the tubular tail 3 may be integral with the launch nozzle 5, or the body 1 may be in one piece with the tubular tail 3 to which the conical nozzle 5 is then attached, which may be made of light metal, for example.

   The invention also contemplates the use of a chamber 6 with a launch cartridge, the length of which is chosen such that this chamber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 extends into the tubular tail 3. In this case, however, the side ports 8 must be arranged so that the reaction gases given off by the launch cartridge in the mortar barrel are directed towards the rear of the shutter 9.
