<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
quement possible.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

NEW CUBILOT AND HOW TO DRIVE IT.
The present invention relates to a new type of top, designed for continuous operation or intermittent operation with the appliance being kept on fire.
The invention also relates to the operation of this melting apparatus, which operation differs significantly from that of cupola furnaces currently known.
It is known to use cupolas comprising an upper part intended to receive the loads, an intermediate part corresponding at least to the fusion zone of the latter, a device for injecting the wind, and a device. lower part in which the molten metal collects and flows. But the internal refractory linings - particularly those of the intermediate part located above the nozzles - are eroded so quickly that after each melting operation it is necessary to bring down the fire and to carry out a restoration of these linings. .
These interruptions are obviously uneconomic in several ways.
An attempt has been made to improve the situation by cooling the intermediate part where the most destruction of the coatings is observed. For this purpose, it has been imagined, for example, to constitute all or part of this intermediate part of metal cooling boxes, coated towards the inside of the cupola with a relatively thin layer of refractory material. Such a construction is not feasible, however, without thermal discontinuities. At the joints between the caissons there is insufficient cooling, resulting in cracks which require prompt repair. Continuous operation of these devices is therefore not practical.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
just possible. Moreover, the replacement of these boxes is difficult and requires a prolonged shutdown.
Similar criticisms can be made of other cooling arrangements including coils embedded in refractory mass.
In all these devices, it is inevitable to provide a refractory lining, and to change it. Monitoring the cooling ducts is, in both cases, almost impossible. Finally, both systems are subject to scaling.
Ultimately, these arrangements do not bring any appreciable progress.
The invention overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks in a very simple and safe manner. It offers an inexpensive device whose monitoring is immediate, for which there is practically no need to provide for replacement and which, finally, can dispense with the need for an interior coating.
The invention consists in constituting, in its intermediate part at least, the outer envelope of the melting zone by a continuous metal wall and subjected to direct cooling applied from the outside.
The metallic intermediate part advantageously takes the shape of a truncated cone which rests on its large base.
According to a feature of the invention, the shape and dimensions of the narrowest cross section of the cooled casing differ from those of the cross section of the well only by the thickness of a reduced refractory lining. substantially at the limit value for which, under the given external cooling conditions, this coating resists the destructive action of the fusions. Under limiting conditions, the thickness of this coating may be zero.
The preferred method of cooling provided according to the invention consists in causing a cooling liquid (which will usually be water) to flow onto the envelope itself. The water is brought by perforated annular tubes which let it fall as rain on the casing, the distribution of the jets being dense enough so that all parts of the casing receive sufficient water. sufficient, and that in fact the outer surface of the envelope is bathed in a liquid sheet of substantially uniform thickness. In the hottest areas, the watering ramps can be multiplied, or their holes tightened.
According to a variant of the invention, the external cooling of the casing can be ensured by the application to the latter of a continuous liquid casing, contained in a second casing, surrounding the first, communicating with the atmosphere. at its upper part.
In this case, the water arrives in this open water-jacket, by the lower part, and is discharged from it at the upper part. It is obvious that such an arrangement of the sheath allows rapid disassembly and easy inspection of the exterior of the envelope of the melting zone.
The metal casing of the intermediate part of the cupola can extend towards the top of the latter, and this extension can even constitute in itself the upper part or tank of the cupola.
Above all, it is very advantageous to extend the envelope downwards.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
loppe cooled, so that it descends to below the wind nozzles. The good behavior of the latter is significantly improved.
As noted above, experience has shown that with the new construction method according to the invention, it is not essential to carry out an internal refractory lining of the cooled metal casing.
However, the preferred solution, according to the invention, consists in maintaining over the entire height of the cupola a refractory lining, the thickness of which will be for example, in a cylindrical cupola of 800 mm. lower diameter, about 200 mm. in the tank, about 50 mm. in the melting zone, and 300 mm., preferably in two independent masonry layers, in the lower zone, that is to say in the crucible.
As for the cooled metal casing, it can extend with advantage over a height of 0.70 to 1.50 m above the wind nozzles depending on the conditions, for example 1.20 m.
However, the aforementioned dimensions are in no way limiting.
As for the fruit given to the metal casing, this does not correspond to any critical limitation. Its purpose is to ensure proper runoff of water to the outer surface. It must not be too large, so as not to modify too appreciably the diameter of the interior of the cupola which must remain approximately cylindrical. One can consider, with advantage, a fruit of the order of 2 mm / m. In short, it is the interior profile of the cupola, and in particular its shape as a cylindrical well and the thickness of the interior lining, which will determine the profile and the dimensions of the exterior casing.
The invention also relates to a method of driving the fire in a cupola, which method of operation proves to be advantageously feasible with an apparatus designed according to the principles set out above.
In this operating mode, a complete emptying is not carried out after each merger operation; any remaining fluid cast iron and slurry are simply allowed to flow out, for example through the cast iron tap hole enlarged for this purpose. The incandescent cokes are kept in the cupola.
After complete emptying of the fluid phases, we carefully read out all the orifices that may let in air (the throat except) or we adjust the air intake in order to maintain a fixed moderate combustion rate.
The heat transfer formed by the coating and the incandescent cokes, and the minimal combustion caused by the very small inevitable or desired inflows of air are sufficient to maintain the incandescence of the coke bed until the next operation (in practice , until the next day).
To make a new fusion, it is not necessary to light the cupola, since the cokes are still glowing. It suffices to restore the level of the coke bed and after any pre-blowing, to load the cupola and finally to proceed with the blowing and melting.
