AUTO UNION G.m.b.H., résidant à INGOLSTADT (Allemagne) , COQUE DE VEHICULE, NOTAMMENT POUR AUTOMOBILES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

A cet endroit (fig.

AUTO UNION G.m.b.H., residing in INGOLSTADT (Germany), VEHICLE HULL, ESPECIALLY FOR AUTOMOBILES.
The invention relates to a vehicle shell of self-supporting construction and / or forming a chassis-shell, and comprising a frame which receives the suspension of the rear wheels and terminates substantially in front of the rear axle.
The invention aims to establish for this hull a spider or rear part as light as possible, while being stable.
Self-supporting chassis-shells are known, in which - when longitudinal leaf springs are provided for example - the front attachment points of the springs are integral with the frame, the rear attachment points being integral with elements of the body suitably reinforced and forming a rear overhang from the frame, awnings with wheels for example. In addition, constructions are known in which the suspension is effected by longitudinal connecting rods, quarter-elliptical springs for example, fixed to the frame. In this case, the reactions coming directly from the wheel do not reach the rear part of the body, forming an overhang. However, all of these examples include additional reinforcing elements in the form of a beam which run rearwardly from the frame.
The wheel awnings then more or less constitute supporting members. It is already known, during the decomposition of the fairing into stamped elements, and in order to achieve a rational construction, to extend the rear mudguard forward, up to the door pillar, to constitute the outer sheet of the wheel awning and raise it on the other hand to the base of the roof.
The construction according to the invention employs a non-deformable floor frame of short length at the rear end of which are adapted
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
on both sides, the suspension systems using longitu- dinal connecting rods, suspended from the body, by means of torsion bars or braked rotation elements, located in the articulation axis of these connecting rods - the. According to the invention, the wheel awnings - which consist only of inner sheets, outer sheets and a transverse part common to the two awnings - form swan necks '' fixed to the chassis or; frame. The two canopies are joined at the bottom by a fona, the raised wall of which can form the rear panel of the spider for example.
The transverse part common to the two wheel awnings is situated at the upper front ends thereof and thus forms a non-deformable upper closing panel for the awnings. On the other hand, this part separates the passenger compartment from the rear compartment provided for luggage. Thus, this part can serve as a support bar for the backrests of the rear seats, while its part which protrudes rearwardly from the base of the roof, with which it is made integral, can form part of the fairing of the shell, between the roof and the rear compartment cover.
According to the invention, the sheets or panels of the wheel awnings are extended forward to the edge of the door opening, where they have rigid edges and are joined to each other, so that the it is advantageously possible to dispense with the provision of a separate door pillar or additional reinforcing elements. The dividing line between the inner and outer sheet of the wheel awning is on the front face of the awning wall, so that the door seal is formed from the outer and / or inner tale, which have appropriate profiles to receive the fastening members of the doors.
The other advantages of the invention reside in the fact that the spider or rear part of an automobile shell can be produced with a smaller number of elements than previously, this spider offering great rigidity despite its reduced weight, so that it can receive larger loads. Large stamped panels, few in number, can be made economically and assembled using simple devices. The fittings, in particular the welded joints, can, thanks to a judicious division of the fairing, be arranged in such a way as to remain invisible from the outside or to be able to be concealed by decorative rings.
The principle of the invention is applicable to the front part of an automobile shell. The following description of an embodiment established in sheet steel highlights the other characteristics and advantages of the invention. This example does not exclude the application of the invention when using other suitable materials.

Figure 13 is a section through the floor and the wheel canopy, transversely to the direction of travel.
The four-door hull of a passenger vehicle has a rectangular chassis floor located between the axles, so that it is particularly short and relatively undeformable. Stretchers go to the front and rear axles. The tubular spars 1,1 'terminate at the rear, at a point situated substantially in front of the rear axle 2, by a cross member which joins them together and of which two have been shown. examples of execution. In one of these, (fig. 5), the crosspiece is made up of a tube 3 (fig. 3) connected to the side members 1, 1 ', by side connecting pieces 4, which tube forms the pivoting support for the longitudinal suspension rods 5 and which receives the torsion bar 6 in its interior.
In the other case (fig. 6), a straight tubular cross member 7 ends the frame at the rear. The latter is provided on both sides with wings 8 and 9 to which the longitudinal suspension rods 5 'are detachably attached, combined with a braked rotation element 38. The outer wings 8, closest to the side members, absorb the vertical components of the torsional forces due to the suspension, while the wings 9 serve in particular to absorb the transverse forces.
The frame, which ends substantially in front of the axle: rear, is extended towards the rear by the wheel awnings in the manner of a gooseneck. According to the invention, these awnings consist of two sheets, that is to say an interior sheet 10 and an interior sheet 11. The front parts of the wheel awnings are covered above by a transverse piece 12 which, on the other hand, unites the two rear wheel awnings of the hull. In addition, this part separates the cockpit from the spider and extends towards the rear, below the roof 13. A rib 14, produced by stamping, makes it possible to rest the roof 13 on the part 12 and the solder to it.
The connection thus obtained can be advantageously masked by a decorative ring, since it is located at the level of the base 20 of the pavilion. The outer sheets 11 of the wheel awnings, as well as the lower edge of the roof 13, are laterally welded (fig. 8) to the rib 14 of the transverse part 12, which rib at this point points towards the wing 39.
Between the rear roof panel and the opening of the rear compartment, the surface 16 of the transverse piece 12 forms part of the fairing and terminates in a gutter 17, to the edge of which is fixed a profile of. sealing 19. In the closed position, the gutter 17 is covered by the cover 40 of the rear compartment or spider.
The two variants of the frame (figures 5 and 6) allow the wheel awnings to be connected so that they surround the suspension.
The inner sheet 10 of the awning has, when considering the horizontal section of its connection with the frame (figs. 9, 10, 11), the approximate shape of a "Z". The bar or outer branch 20, directed towards the front, of this "Z", is formed by the continuous wing 24 which settles at the connection to the outer sheet 11 of the awning. This bar widens (Fig. 10) to form a wing extension 20 in the direction of the spar 1,1 'and is joined to the latter by a rigid weld joint, oriented in the direction of travel. We also see (fig.
II) that the inner sheet 10 can be advanced relative to the outer sheet 11, so that the circular flange 24 con-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
serves its width up to the point of connection to the spar 1, 1 ', while the flange 25 of the outer sheet 11 merges, in the direction of the frame, with the other flange 41. The substantially vertical wall and facing the the rear, formed by the inner sheet 10 of the wheel awning, ie the wall 21, forms the other outer branch of the "Z".
In the example of FIG. 5, the branch 21 rests directly on the lateral support hand ': ... which moves towards the rear and which connects the tubular cross member 3 to the side members 1, 1'. In the other example (fig. 6), the flange 8 of the cross member 7 acts as a support for the internal sheet 10.

This connection 22 thus forms, together with the inner plate 10, a hollow support which tapers from bottom to top.
Thus the forces due to the load of the rear compartment are absorbed by the articulations of the suspension for a major part and - by the shortest possible path, by the intermediary of the wing 8.

These connecting wings or flanges 24) 25 are interrupted in the upper front part of the wheel awnings over a distance over which the transverse piece 12 constitutes one of the walls of the awnings. At this point (fig. 8), a flange or rim 26 is applied against the part 12. On the other hand, at the level of the base 20 of the roof, the outer sheet 11 is simultaneously connected to the lower edge of the roof. overhanging 13 and to the outer extension 39, in the form of a wing, of the rib 14.
Between the rib 14 of the transverse part 12 and the front side edge of the opening of the rear compartment, the outer sheet 11 rests flat against the surface 16, forming the fairing, of the part 12,
EMI4.4
and is welded ;, a. this one. This short-length solder joint is mostly masked by the cover .t which, in the closed position, covers the opening of the rear compartment on all sides, so that the joint does not require any surfacing. The rearward extensions of the flanges 24.25 limit the opening of the rear compartment.
The inner sheet 10 of the wheel awning represents, thanks to the fact that it constitutes a substantially vertical wall 21, a por-
EMI4.5
killer of a great moment of resistance in the vertical direction. C-11-3 is therefore suitable for absorbing other forces required to be transmitted to the hull from the wheel sets. Thus, the action plane of the shock absorber 27 provided for the longitudinal suspension rod 5 is located approximately in the plane 21 of the inner plate 10 of the wheel awning, this shock absorber itself being located in a recess 28 and being fixed to the inner sheet 10 by means of a support piece 29.
The lateral rigidity of the wall 21 is obtained firstly by virtue of the connection between the lower edge of the latter and the floor 42. On the other hand, the convex part of the outer sheet 11, which connects to the flange 24. constitutes a reinforcing element.

has a convex indentation greater than the approximate plumb of the

This results in a tunnel-shaped connection 30 between the wheel canopies, which further increases the buckling resistance of the recess 28 of the walls 21. The tunnel-like recess 30 of the floor 42 is laterally limited by the ribs. lower edges, directed in a more or less rectilinear fashion towards the rear, of the walls 21, which are completed at the location of the tunnel by a flange 31 and a reinforcing element 32, the greatest moment of which of resistance acts in the lateral direction, an element which also merges with the floor 42 at the front and at the rear.
The floor 42, forming the floor of the spider, extends forwards to the top of the frame and serves as a cover panel for the tubular cross member 7. This floor is supported laterally on the side members 1.1 'and extends forward as far as a U-shaped cross member 45 connecting the two sidelines and forming the rear limit of the location of the rear seat legs. The floor 42 is limited at the rear by an end element 34 of the spider, joined laterally to the flange 46 of the inner wall 21 of the wheel awning. Floor 42 and element 3 .; can be formed in one piece. The upper edge of the seat back 43 rests on the transverse piece 12, while its inner lower edge rests on the tunnel-shaped recess 30.
This recess connects at right angles to the floor 42, so that the luggage 44 meets a rigid support at the front.
In the shell with four doors (figs. 1, 2), the latter are articulated at the front. When the wheel awnings are established according to the invention, they extend forward as far as the embrasure line 37. The flanges of the inner and outer plates 10 and 11 of the wheel awnings constitute here (fig. 9 ) the bay rebate 35 and, in addition, the wall had awning. The rebate 35, the flanges 24 and 25 welded together, as well as the edge 36 of the inner sheet 10 of the awning, give the awning at this point the role of a support element or beam forming an upright, which is furthermore closed above by the transverse cover part 12, which makes it particularly unpleasant.
The plates 10 and 11 have the recesses necessary to receive the fastening members of the doors. A door pillar was thus produced consisting solely of the wheel awning, without other reinforcing elements. The shape of the embrasure line 37 does not matter from the point of view of the application of the invention.
In the example shown (fig. 1), this line is straight in side view.
The advantage of this shape consists in that it makes it possible to make more easily, and therefore more economically, the tooling necessary to shape the outer sheet 11. It also simplifies the adjustment of the door relative to the cutting of the l. 'wheel canopy, intended to receive the door. In addition, the rectilinear edge significantly increases the rigidity of the front wall, forming the door pillar, of the wheel canopy, compared to a curved doorway line.
