<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
On a donc
EMI3.2
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
On doit avoir F2 - F2
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

DIFFERENTIAL SPEED VARIATOR.
The addition to a speed variator using movable flanged pulleys of a differential mechanism makes it possible, as we know, to extend the range of variation of the transmission ratio.
However, for the operation of such an assembly to be automatic, it is absolutely essential that the various positions of the movable cheeks of the pulleys are positions of stable equilibrium. However, the lateral pressures exerted on the cheeks by the belts vary as a function of the tension of the latter, and as the variations in tension follow the variations in the resistive torque, they are precisely amplified by the introduction of a mechanism. differential. Such an easement particularly complicates the problem of stability in systems of the type under consideration.
The present invention relates to a speed variator mechanism by pulleys with movable flanges and trapezoidal belts combined with a differential system, in which automatic operation is perfectly correct in all operating conditions.
The speed variator according to the invention comprises a differential interposed between the driving shaft and the driven shaft, this variator being characterized in that the driving shaft drives, via an auxiliary shaft and a coupling device, one of the planetary of the differential, of which the planet carrier is integral with the driven shaft, while a connection by pulleys with movable cheeks and trapezoidal belts is established between the aforesaid auxiliary shaft and the second planetary.
The position of the movable cheeks of the pulleys on the two shafts is also conditioned by the balance between the antagonistic actions on
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
these mobile cheeks of the aforementioned coupling device and of a centrifugal action regulator mounted on one of the shafts considered.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention which offers the particularity of using neither spring nor any force of elastic origin, the coupling device consists of a helical thread pinion wedged on the driving shaft, this pinion forming a screw relative to a nut constituted by a sleeve centered on the auxiliary shaft, and integral with the movable cheeks of the pulleys carried by this shaft.
Other features relating to the present invention will be further demonstrated in the description which follows.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown, by way of example and without any limiting nature, a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the mechanism partially cut away and sectioned along I-I of FIG. '2.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the mechanism, in section along II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial right angle view of the left side of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is an explanatory diagram.
Referring to fig. 2, we see at 1 the driving shaft terminated by a helical gear 2, forming a screw and located inside a sleeve 3 which acts as a nut. The shaft 1 carries beyond the pinion 2 a hollow auxiliary shaft 4 which can rotate freely around it. The shaft 4 is terminated by a toothed pinion 5 which meshes with one of the sun gear 6 of a differential carried by the driven shaft 7. This sun gear engages internally with the planet wheels 10 mounted, via needle bearings 8, inside collars 9 secured to the planet carrier 11 keyed to the driven shaft 7.
The planet wheels 10 mesh on the other hand with the outer ring gear of a pinion forming the second sun gear 12. This sun gear is extended by a sleeve 13 surrounding the driven shaft 7 around which it can rotate.
In addition, and in accordance with the invention, a connection by pulleys with movable flanges and trapezoidal belts is established between the auxiliary shaft 4 and the second sun gear. This connection is made up of four pulleys facing each other in pairs. For pulleys centered on the shaft 1, the fixed cheeks 14 and 16 are integral with the auxiliary shaft 4, while the mobile cheeks 15 and 17, secured by the rods 18, are integral with the sleeve 3.
For pulleys centered on the shaft 7, a similar arrangement is adopted. However, the fixed cheeks 22 and 24 integral with the sleeve 13 correspond to the movable cheeks 15 and 17, and conversely the movable cheeks 21 and 23 corresponding to the fixed cheeks 14 and 16.
The cheeks 14, 15, 21, 22 are connected by a trapezoidal belt 31 and the cheeks 16, 17, 23, 24 by a second belt 32.
A coupling device is also provided for securing, between the shafts 1 and 7, the longitudinal movements of the movable cheeks of the pulleys.
To this end, the sleeve 3 carries fixed at its periphery a bearing 19 surrounded by a crown 20, formed in a flange '28. Likewise, the movable cheeks 21 and 23 are joined by rods '25 which end in a collar 26 carrying, by means of a bearing 27, a crown 30, integral with the flange 28, the ends of which form two journals. 29. The latter are engaged in forks 34 integral with an oscillating shaft 35 carried by the frame 36, perpendicular to the shafts 1 and 7, and of which
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
pivoting is limited by a retractable stopper, 33 (fig. 3). This assembly constitutes the coupling device of the movable cheeks.
Finally, the centrifugal action regulator provided in accordance with the invention is arranged on the driving shaft. This device consists essentially of heavy balls 37 bearing on the outer faces of the cheeks 15 and 16. These balls are radially mobile and are guided in their movements by flanges 38. In addition, the ramps 39 and 41 with which the balls are in contact have a determined profile, as will be explained later.
The kinematic operation of the variable speed drive thus described is as follows:
The shaft 1 being driven by a driving rotation communicates, through the pinion 2 and the sleeve 3, its rotation both to the pulleys centered on the shaft 1 and to the auxiliary shaft 4. The rotation of the aforementioned pulleys is trans- put by the belts 21 and 32 to the pulleys centered on the driven shaft 7 and, consequently, on the pinion 12 of the second sun gear, while the pinion 5 of the auxiliary shaft 4 drives the pinion 6 of the first sun gear.
In fig. 1 and 2, the radii of the gears of the planetary 6 and 12 are proportional to the radii of the gears of the satellites 10 which are respectively engaged with them; knows then that the satellite carrier rotates at an angular velocity u equal to the algebraic mean of the angular velocities of the two planets u6 and u12.
EMI3.1
Now u6 = - k u1 u1 being the angular speed of the driving shaft and k a positive constant.
On the other hand: u12 = M u1 M designating the variable ratio of the winding radii of the belts 31 or 32 on the pulleys which carry them (M is greater than 1 in the case of the figure).
So we have
EMI3.2
Consequently, if M is equal to k, u7 = 0, it is the neutral point; if M is greater than k, the driven shaft rotates in the same direction as the driving shaft, it is direct travel; if M is less than k, it is the reverse.
Ultimately, the value of M defines the transmission ratio of the system. However, this value is a function of the longitudinal position of the movable cheeks of the pulleys.
It will be noted in this connection that the movements of the cheeks 15 and 17 on the one hand, 21 and 23 on the other hand, are linked by virtue of the coupling device.
Indeed, the shaft 35 and the forks 34 force the flange 28 to move parallel to itself; it follows that if the movable cheeks 15 and 17 move away from the fixed cheeks 14 and 16, the movable cheeks 21 and 23 approach the fixed cheeks '22 and 24; the winding radii of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tracks 31 and 32 decrease on tree 1, while they increase by an equal amount on tree 7; and vice versa.
In the embodiment shown, the free travel of the movable cheeks is limited to the position corresponding to the neutral point (u7 = 0) by the stop 33 with which a fork 34 comes into contact. The eclipsing of this stop and an action manual on the fork then allow you to switch to reverse. The various positions of a fork 34 are shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3.
With regard to dynamic operation, the system being in direct operation, it should be noted that the thrust of the belts does not intervene in the longitudinal position of the movable cheeks of the pulleys.
Indeed, the associated movable cheeks 17 and '23, for example, of the same train of pulleys are arranged on either side of the median plane of the belt 32, and moreover they are linked in translation thanks to the device. above-mentioned hitch. Therefore, the resultant of the lateral pressures exerted by the belt 32 on the cheeks 17 and '23 is zero.
The longitudinal position of the movable cheeks of the pulleys is therefore determined by the equilibrium of the following two antagonistic actions only: a longitudinal thrust transmitted by the coupling device 2-3. This thrust is proportional to the engine torque, but independent of the position of the sleeve 3 thanks to the helical shape of the thread which, for a given direction of rotation, tends to move this sleeve always in the same direction. In the example given, this thrust tends to move the movable cheeks 13 and 17 away from the fixed cheeks 14 and 16 respectively, and consequently to reduce the winding radius of the belts 31 and 32 around the shaft 1.
a longitudinal thrust in the opposite direction, coming from the resultant parallel to the shaft 1 of the actions of the balls 37 on the ramp 39 of the movable cheek 15. These actions are caused by the centrifugal force to which each ball is subjected. These actions tend to bring the movable cheeks 15 and 17 closer to the fixed cheeks 14 and 16, and consequently to increase the winding radii around the shaft 1.
In the mechanism according to the invention, the longitudinal thrust due to the regulator does not depend on the modifications of the turning radius of the balls 37 around the shaft 1, nor, consequently, on the position of the movable cheeks, but only of the angular speed of the motor rotation u1. In other words, this push is constant as long as one remains constant.
This result is obtained by giving a particular profile to the ramps 39 and 41. These two ramps being, for example, symmetrical, their track can be determined as follows (see fig. 4):
The extreme positions of a ball 37 being given, radially and longitudinally, by the bulk of the apparatus, the centrifugal force F, to which the ball is subjected in one of these positions, has a component F, applied to one of the ramps, the projection of which on the shaft is F2; in the other position, the projection on the shaft of the component F1 of 1 'action F' is F '2.
We must have F2 - F2
Now, there exists an infinity of circles tangent to the two considered positions of the ball which can be chosen as profiles; Mon
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of them satisfies the above equality; this equality being sensibly verified between the extreme positions.
Therefore, if the profiles of the ramps 39 and 41 are arcs of a circle defined as just said, the thrust due to the regulator is practically constant if u1 is constant.
Under these conditions, to each value of the engine torque corresponds a value of the driving rotation for which the sleeve 3 and the movable cheeks of the pulleys are in equilibrium, whatever their position. Of course, the constants of the apparatus are determined. so that the corresponding values of the engine torque and the engine rotation are the most favorable, taking into account the characteristics of the engine and the nature of the driven machine (vehicle for example ,.
In the explanations which follow, it will be assumed, which is practically always the case, that the inertia of the motor is low compared to the inertia of the driven masses.
It is then easy to check the stability of the equilibrium of the sleeve 3 and of the movable cheeks assumed to be in any position, when the values of the motor torque and of the motor rotation correspond If indeed, the motor torque remains constant, the cheeks 15 and 17 are moved away from the cheeks 14 and 16, M decreases, and u7 remaining constant, u1 increases immediately. As a result, the thrust of the balls on the ramp 39 becomes predominant and pushes the cheeks 15 and 17 back to their initial position, whereby u1 returns to its original value.
It can be deduced from this that, in operation at constant motor torque, the driving speed is kept constant, independently of the position of the mobile cheeks, that is to say regardless of the variations in the speed of the driven shaft. This result is achieved for each value of the engine torque. Changes in the transmission ratio are therefore automatic at all engine speeds.
Among the advantages of the speed variator according to the invention, mention should be made of: the large amplitude of variation of the transmission ratio with neutral and reverse.
- the sensitivity and the precision of the operation in which the very significant modifications of tension undergone by the belts when the transmission ratio changes, thanks to the presence of the coupling device, do not intervene.
- Less tension in the belts, the resistive force being divided by half between the two planetary, due to the fact that the driven shaft is wedged on the planet carrier.
Finally, the thrust of the balls of the centrifugal action regulator being balanced by a component of the engine torque and not by a spring, the following advantages should also be noted: - the engine rotation speed, remaining constant at constant engine torque, is always proportionate to the latter. This results in better use of power and longer engine life.
- it is possible to obtain very vigorous accelerations.
Indeed, a sudden increase in the engine torque produces an immediate separation of the movable cheeks of the pulleys mounted on the engine shaft, and the system changes to a lower transmission ratio, which increases the effect of the torque on the engine. 'driven shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
it is possible to hasten the change of gear reduction by acting on the engine torque.
It goes without saying that many variations could be made to the embodiment of the mechanism, without departing from the scope of the present invention. In particular, the coupling device could be replaced by any members ensuring equal and simultaneous movements of the movable cheeks. On the other hand, the auxiliary shaft may not mesh directly with the first sun gear of the differential, the pinion which drives the latter may be wedged directly on the motor shaft, instead of being wedged on the auxiliary shaft. . The number of pulleys and belts can also be different. In addition, the differential can obviously be of another type. Finally, the profile of the ramps may be different from that shown, provided that it meets the conditions specified above.
CLAIMS
1) An automatic speed variator comprising a differential interposed between the driving shaft and the driven shaft, this variator being characterized in that the driving shaft drives, via an auxiliary shaft and a coupling device, one of the planetary of the differential, of which the planet carrier is integral with the driven shaft, a connection by pulleys with movable cheeks and trapezoidal belts being further established between the aforesaid auxiliary shaft and the second planetary, the position of the movable cheeks of the pulleys on the two shafts being further conditioned by the balance between the opposing actions on these movable cheeks of the aforementioned coupling device and of a centrifugal action regulator mounted on one of the trees considered.
