<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
temps.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO TRACK FIXING DEVICES.
The invention relates to devices for fixing shoe rails, for railways or the like, on sleepers, these devices being of the type which comprise a pair of crampons each of which comprises a burr-threaded rod which is engaged or can be engaged in the cross member when the crampon is driven axially therein and the two crampons being placed on either side of the rail, each cramp having a part suitable for exerting a retaining pressure on the adjacent edge the shoe of the rail, the arrangement being such that the shoe of the rail, on each side thereof, is directly in contact when the fixing device is in place,
with the shank of the adjacent stud or with the corresponding edge of a notch in the top face of the sleeper or in a sole mounted on the rail so that the rail is held in place by direct contact with an established stud shank of each side of the shoe or with each edge of said notch made in the cross member or in the sole, if the latter exists.
To simplify the description, hereinafter denotes a stud, suitable for being engaged in the cross member in the manner described above, by the expression "axially engaged stud".
The fixing clamps of the above-mentioned type, the rod of which is not threaded and can be driven into the crosspiece by an axial movement, have hitherto been formed in such a way that the part which exerts the pressure bears on the adjacent edge of the rail shoe, so that the removal of the rail can only be done after changing the position of the spike relative to the cross member.
Usually the cross member is made of wood and changing the position of the spike relative to the cross member is undesirable since removing and reinserting a spike correctly requires a lot of effort.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
time. Furthermore, the retaining properties of the stud are not improved by repeated extractions and their multiple engagements in the same hole of the cross member. The disadvantageous marls occur when the sleeper is made of concrete with one or more holes suitable for receiving the crampons and lined with dowels of wood or another fibrous material which exert the necessary retaining force on the shank of the crampons.
The same drawbacks do not occur to the same degree when the stud rod is threaded and can be screwed into a tapped hole, made in a wooden cross member or in a dowel in the case of a concrete cross member, because the crampon or lag bolt can then be removed easily by unscrewing and in a short time without reducing the retaining force existing between the crampon and the cross member.
An unthreaded and axially engaged stud in the cross member is held in place by the deformation and mutilation of the fibers of the wooden sleeper or the peg, these fibers being susceptible to breakage and further damage during subsequent extraction. of the stud, so that the retention properties thereof may be greatly reduced by frequent extractions and repeated replacements in the same hole of the cross member.
A rail fastening device has already been proposed with a clamp engaged axially, this device however being of a different type from that described above and allowing the rail to be removed without having to move the rod of the rail. crampon relative to the cross member, this known arrangement being such that the part of the crampon, which exerts the pressure, occupies a position such with respect to the rod of the crampon that this part does not cover any portion of the rail when the latter is in place, the fixing device comprising a pair of pressure transmitting members, each of these members being interposed or being suitable for being interposed between the part of the crampon, which exerts the pressure, and the adjacent edge of the shoe of the rail , in order to be able to transmit a holding pressure to said edge,
char- a member for the transmission of the pressure being able to be moved away from its active position without having to modify the position of the rod of the crampon engaged with respect to the cross member so that the rail can be removed without modify the position of the rod engaged in it.
For this known device, the pressure transmitter member is interposed between the corresponding edge of the shoe of the rail and the adjacent edge of a sole with notch on which the rail is housed. According to a variant, the pressure transmitter member is located on one side of the rail only and is interposed between the corresponding edge of the shoe of the rail and the adjacent edge of the sole with notch.
In each case, it is necessary to have recourse to a notched sole for which the distance between the two longitudinal edges of the notch is notably greater than the total width of the rail shoe, especially when the indicated variant is adopted. above first. It follows that, in each case, the width of the notch in the sole, which receives the shoe, is notably greater than usual, so that one is obliged to use a sole whose l The notch does not have the usual normal shape and that in each case the one or two pressure transmitting members must necessarily serve to hold the rail in place, this or these members having to be very solid and rigid.
The object of the invention is to provide a rail fastening device, of the kind indicated at the start and which allows the rail to be removed and replaced without modifying the position of each crampon rod with respect to the entire cross member. by making it possible to use a sole, if it exists, in which a notch is made, suitable for receiving the rail, the width of which corresponds to that of the shoe of the rail, this notch being made in the cross member in the event that the sole is completely deleted.
The arrangement is then such that in either case the rail is maintained
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bare in place by direct contact with the edges of the notch in the cross member or in the sole, if there is one, or by contact with the studs of the studs, which allows the use of relatively light pressure transmitting members and which, if desired, can be elastic.
The rail can therefore be held resiliently in place, with part or, if desired, all of the elasticity being provided by the pressure transmitting members.
In accordance with the invention, the device for fixing the rail is formed in such a way that each member, the pressure transmitter, is prevented from deviating from the rail, in a substantially horizontal direction, by its contact with the corresponding clamp in a point spaced from the adjacent edge of the rail shoe and / on, by its contact with a stop provided on the notched sole, if it exists, said stop being spaced from the corresponding edge of the notch in which the shoe is housed, the arrangement being such that, despite the intervention of each pressure transmitting member, each of the two edges of the pad can be directly in contact with the rod of the corresponding crampon or with the adjacent edge of a notch, serving as a housing to the shoe and provided in the upper face of the cross member or a sole if it exists.
This arrangement not only allows the use, if desired, of an ordinary sole with shoulders or edges and with a notch of usual width to receive the shoe of the rail, but also, since the width of the sole is normal and corresponds to the total width of a sole commonly used for shoe rail fasteners, the use of holes, which are formed in the sole to receive the studs and which are established, being spaced apart, as in Usually, rail so that the device, object of the invention, can be easily used for existing railway installations.
Preferably, the pressure transmitting member, when in place, is only in contact with the upper face of the adjacent edge of the rail shoe.
Preferably, too, the pressure transmitting member is elastic so that, especially when using an elastic stud, the rail is resiliently clamped against the cross member.
Advantageously, the crampon, which is located on each side of the cross member, comprises two rods spaced apart from each other and suitable for being engaged in separate holes in the cross member, these rods being fully connected to each other by the part of the crampon intended to exert pressure, which makes it possible to use a crampon whose rods have the simplest possible cross-section, in particular a circular cross-section, while avoiding the crampon, after its installation , can rotate around a vertical axis by the effect of the path of the rail, at the same time that the contact between the crampon and the corresponding pressure transmitting member can be used to prevent this member from being able to , itself, be angularly displaced by the effect of the track of the rail.
According to a variant and in the case where the rail is supported by the cross member by means of a sole, the latter may include vertical stops intended to come into contact with the pressure transmitting member in order to prevent the latter. ci rotates around a vertical axis by the effect of the path of the rail, that is to say by the effect of the tendency of the rail to move longitudinally with respect to the sleeper during use .
When, as is preferred, the crampon has two spaced apart rods, these are placed, after the crampon has been leveled, in the direction of the length of the rail; this arrangement allowing the pressure transmitting member to be introduced or removed through the existing gap
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
both between the two stems of the crampon, during the installation and removal of the rail, this pressure transmitting member being located between the two stems of the crampon when the latter is installed.
In the particular case of crampons for which the part, which exerts the pressure, is elastically connected by means of lateral branches, to the two stems of the crampon, it is necessary to provide suitable means to "stop the retaining force. , produced by the part which exerts the pressure, on the pressure transmitting member so that this can be removed to allow the movement of the rail. Another object of the invention is therefore to provide a tool to the help which we can put an end to this effort of restraint.
For this purpose and in accordance with another characteristic of the invention, use is made, in the case where. a fastening device established according to the invention is used to a tool to release the pressure exerted by the crampon, this tool comprising an arm provided, at or near one end, of a pair of projections established on each side of said arm, the two projections of each pair being established at different horizontal levels so that the upper projection of each pair can bear on the upper face of one of the two lateral branches of the crampon while the lower projection can bear on the lower face of said branch,
the arrangement being such that the tool can be put in place by bringing it closer to the rail so as to bring the protrusions to their aforesaid active position, after which the opposite end of the tool can be forced downwards and the branches lateral crampon, adjacent to the part of this crampon which exerts pressure, can be curved, substantially upwards to move them away from the studs of the crampon, which stops the force exerted on the pressure transmitting member and allows the latter to be moved away from its active position to allow removal of the rail.

The sole 32 has a central notch 34, formed as usual, that is to say that its width corresponds to that of the foot 35 of the rail. On each side, this notch comprises a vertical shoulder 29 intended to come into contact with the adjacent edge 28 of the corresponding wing 48 of the shoe 35 when the latter is engaged in. the notch.
Consequently, the rail can be put in place in the usual way by its contact with the two shoulders 29 of the sole 32, the latter therefore being constituted, in reality, by a sole with shoulders or notch having an absolutely standardized as that commonly used to fasten rail tracks with skids to sleepers.
In this case, each sole comprises a pair of crampons 36 which serve for the elastic support of the rail and which are established on either side of the rail. Each stud is formed from a single section of a bar or a wire made of an elastic metal. For the example shown, this bar or wire has a circular cross section and the clamp comprises two spaced rods 37, ordinary and non-threaded, which can be engaged respectively and axially in the pair of corresponding holes 33 of the sole and in the cross member 31.
The two rods are integrally and elastically connected to each other by an arm 38 comprising two branches 40 each of which is connected to the upper end of the corresponding rod 37, these branches 40 having a shape such as a central hole 39. is formed between them, the upper ends 41 of the rods 37, near their junction with the corresponding branches 40, being bent towards each other from the rail to thereby reduce the useful length of the arm 38 of the stud in a direction transverse to the rail and so that the end 42 of the arm 38, which is closest to the rail, does not cover any part of the latter when it is in place.
The end 42 of the arm 38 constitutes the part of the crampon which exerts the pressure and the pressure transmitting member 43 is constituted by a rectangular plate, of an elastic metal, which is introduced into the widest part of the. aforesaid central hole 39, the major axis of the rectangular plate being perpendicular to the length of the rail and its inclination on the horizontal corresponding, in general, to that of the arm 38 of the crampon.
The plate 45 is bent so that the lower face of its upper and outer end 44 can bear, when the plate is in place, on the branches 40 of the crampon arm at the place where these branches are closest. The plate 43 is curved, near its lower and internal end 45, about a transverse axis so that its upper face forms a concave seat 46 for the lower face of the end 42 of the arm 38 of the stud. The lower end 45 of the plate 43 is curved slightly upwards, with respect to the horizontal, so as to be able to be applied to the upper face 47, generally inclined, of the wing 48 of the shoe 35. .
To facilitate the introduction or removal of the plate 43, use is made of a tool 49, which releases the pressure and which comprises a lever 50, only a part of which is shown in the drawings. The lever
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
50 is terminated by a fork with two divergent arms 51 which, at an intermediate point of their length, can rest on the upper face of the arm 38 of the crampon, near the places where its branches 40 are connected to the rods 37 of the crampon. crampon. The free ends of the arms of the fork carry opposite lugs 52 suitable for being engaged under the median parts of the branches 40 of the arm 38, in the form of a U.
When the opposite end (not shown) of the lever 50 of the tool is lowered, the fork of the latter pivots around the aforementioned support points to raise the part 42, which exerts the pressure, of the elastic arm 38. of the stud with respect to the rods 37 thereof, which makes it possible to engage or disengage the plate 43 which, when it is in place, only presses on the stud and the shoe of the rail to hold the latter elastically in place.
It should be noted that the operation of this tool 49 does not modify the position of the rods 37 of the crampon with respect to the cross member and that, when the plates are removed from each side of the rail, the latter can be moved away from the sole. without disturbing, in any way, the locations of the studs of the crampons in relation to the cross member.
The upper end of the plate 43 can, in this case, be profiled so that it can bear on the adjacent part of the spike in order to prevent the plate from being able to move angularly with respect to the spike by the. effect of the track of the rail.
In figs. 3 and 4 show a device which, in general, is similar to the previous arrangement, the branches 40 of the arm 38 of the stud having an arcuate shape which decreases the total width of the stud in a transverse direction by relative to the rail so that the part of the crampon which connects the two branches 40 to each other and which forms the aforesaid part 42, which exerts pressure, does not cover the adjacent flange of the shoe of the rail.
In this case, the pressure transmitting member comprises a plate 43, made of an elastic metal, and which has the shape of an elongated rectangle, the plate being put in place by inserting it laterally between the two rods 37 of the cleat so that one end of the plate, in particular its inner end 45 which is slightly upwardly curved, is pressed flat on the upper and inclined face 47 of the flange 48 of the rail shoe.
The plate is curved about an axis transverse to its length so that its upper face forms a concave seat 46, intended to come into contact with the lower face of the part 42, exerting the pressure, of the spike, the 'outer end 44 of the plate being curved downwards so that its edge comes to bear on the upper face of the se-. mile 32 at a point which is located, in substance, between the two holes 33 of the adjacent studs of the stud, the plate being, apart from that, spaced from the upper face of the sole.
In figs. 5 and 6, the device comprises a sole 32 similar to that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 but which has on each side of its notch 34 a single hole 63 to receive a stud. This hole is placed closer to the notch than the pair of holes 33 of the previous embodiments, each hole being able to receive and retain, without being able to turn, the shank 37 of a spike 36 with a single rod. This has a square or other than circular cross section and its upper end forms an integral loop 64, the plane of which is substantially parallel to the length of the rail but the free end 65 of the loop is spaced from the rod. of the crampon and its plane is slightly inclined in relation to the vertical (fig. 5).
The pressure transmitting member 43, in this case and substantially, has the shape of a U with a shorter upper branch 66 and a longer lower branch 67 the opposite faces of these branches being respectively in contact with the upper and lower faces of the free end 65, of square section, of the loop 64 formed by the crampon. The two branches are therefore perpendicular to the length of the rail with their ends
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
free lines oriented towards the core of the latter and the lower face of the free end 68 of the longer branch is supported, when it occupies its active position, on the outer edge of the upper face of the wing skating.
Fig. 7 shows a device for which the clamp is similar to that of FIG. 3, that is to say that a standardized sole 32 is used which is not modified in any way. For this device, the pressure transmitting member 43 is only in contact with the wing of the pad and with the retaining arm of the crampon and it is constituted by a wedge whose cross section has an elongated rectangular shape. One end of the wedge has a notch 60 which extends the entire length of the wedge, this notch having sufficient depth to fully accommodate the pressure-exerting portion 42 of the spike as well as the adjacent ends of the rods 40-. of it.
The length of the wedge is such that when fully engaged, the aforesaid two ends of the rods are received in the cradle 60 and are in contact with the opposing edges so that the wedge is effectively prevented from rotating, relative to the stud, around an axis parallel to the length of the rail, only through its contact with the stud.
The lower face of the end of the wedge, spaced from that which comprises the notch 60, comprises a face 69 intended to come into contact with the flange of the foot of the rail, said face 69 and said notch 60 are inclined relative to the longitudinal direction of the wedge so that the crampon arm is extended when the wedge is fully engaged. This wedge forms, in reality, a removable extension of the crampon arm so that a standard sole can be used with a usual spacing of the holes for the studs of the crampons without the arm of each crampon covering any part. rail. It is realized that when the wedge is removed, the rail itself can be removed or moved without having to change the position of the spike relative to the cross member.
Figs. 8 and 9 show a device applicable more particularly in the case where the rail is housed directly in a notch 70 made in the cross member 31 without the intervention of a sole. The notch has two vertical shoulders 29 which are respectively in contact with the edges 28 of the shoe of the rail to hold the rail in place by direct contact with the cross member. In this particular case, use is made of a clamp 36 having a general shape similar to an ordinary U-shaped clip but the wire of which has a larger cross section. This clamp comprises two rods 37 spaced apart from each other in the direction of the length of the rail, these rods being integrally connected to each other by a straight and horizontal part 42 which forms the part exerting the pressure of the rail. crampon.
Rods 37 and part 42 all have a circular cross section.
The pressure transmitting member 43 comprises a plate, of resilient metal, formed from a metal strip having a substantially rectangular shape. This plate is slit over part of its width up to a point between its opposite ends and along two parallel straight lines, thereby forming a partially cut-out tongue 71 which, then, is bent outwards and is wound up completely. - around the part 42 which connects the two rods 37 of the crampon so that on one side of this part 42 are two tabs 72 which are spaced from each other in the longitudinal direction of the rail and which are suitable for application to the upper face of the adjacent flange of the rail shoe.
The end of the tongue 71, which protrudes from the other side of the part 42 and which is curved so as to have, in cross section, the shape of an inverted cup, comprises, along its lower face a notch 73 suitable for receiving the upper face of a corner or of a substantially rectangular wedge 74, the opposite face of which bears on the upper face of the cross member on the side of the spike spaced from the rail.
The arrangement is such that, when it is desired to dismantle the rail, the wedge is removed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
which makes it possible to rotate the plate 43 around the axis of the intermediate part 42 of the crampon, so as to bring the end of the tongue 71 closer to the cross member by a sufficient length so that the tabs 72 are moved away from the rail and cease to cover any part of the rail shoe. The rail can therefore be removed and replaced without having to change the position of the clamp in relation to the cross member.
In fig. 10 a sole with shoulders, but made in a non-standardized manner, is used and comprises two pairs of holes 33 suitable for receiving the studs of the studs like those of the device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, but each pair of holes is near the corresponding outer edge of the notch in the sole. The clamp 36 has the same shape as that of the device of FIGS. 8 and 9, the pressure transmitter member 43 being constituted by an elastic plate, made of spring steel, which is curved so as to have the shape of an elongated U with two branches 75 and 76, spaced apart from one another. the other in the vertical direction and placed transversely with respect to the length of the rail, being interposed between the connecting part 42 of the stud and the upper face of the sole.
The lower branch 75, near its junction to the cross member 77 of the U-shaped plate, rests on the upper face of the sole.
The free end of the lower branch 75 of the plate is in contact, via its lower face, with the upper face of the adjacent flange of the shoe of the rail. The upper branch 76 is curved, at a point between its two ends, so as to have a concave shape on the side of its upper face and in a direction perpendicular to its length, this concave part 78 being in elastic contact with it. the lower face of the part 42, of circular section, which connects the rods of the clamp, so that the plate 43 is detachably prevented from moving laterally with respect to the rail.
The device, shown in figs. 11 and 12 is analogous to that shown in FIG. 10 but the sole 32 is omitted and the shoe of the rail is housed in a notch of the cross member as in the case of FIGS.
8 and 9. The pressure transmitting member in this case comprises a very short branch 75 which bears only on the upper face of the cross member on the side of the stud opposite to that where the rail is located. The upper branch 76, which is longer, passes under the connecting part 42 of the crampon and the free end 79 of this upper branch is curved so as to have a convex shape along its lower face so that the latter has substantially linear contact with the upper face of the adjacent flange of the rail shoe. For the two devices described above and shown in FIGS. 10 to 12, the removal of the rail without changing the position of the spike takes place by bending the upper leg 76 of the plate downwardly so that it can be removed by moving it in a direction away from the rail.
For the device, shown in figs. 13 and 14, the rail is fixed to the cross member by means of a sole having a standardized shape and comprising on each side of the rail two holes 33 suitable for receiving the rods of a crampon, these holes being spaced apart. 'one from the other and being separated from the notch of the sole as already described above. The stud is in one piece with two shanks 37 but in this case the legs 40 of the crampon arm are extremely short so that the connecting part 42 is very close to the shanks 37 and is far away from the edge of the spike. corresponding wing of the rail shoe.
In this case, the pressure transmitting member 43 is constituted by a plate formed by a trapezoidal part of an elastic metal, the part 80 of lesser width, of the trapezoid, resting, by its: lower lace, on the face. top of the adjacent flange of the rail shoe. The opposite edge 81 of the plate is curved upwardly about an axis parallel to the length of the connecting part 42 of the clamp so that it partially goes around the underside of said part 42. Both opposite ends of this edge 81 have tabs
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
C2 oriented in opposite directions, each tab being in contact with the upper face of one of the branches 40, of reduced length, of the crampon arm.
As a result, when the plate is in place, it is effectively prevented from rotating about an axis parallel to the connecting portion 42 of the spike and is maintained in active contact with the wing of the pad of the shoe. rail. The elasticity of the plate allows it to move away from the rail so that the latter can be removed and replaced without changing the location of the clamp.
For the device shown in fig. 15 the rail is fixed to the cross member by a standardized sole and with shoulders, as described above, and an elastic crampon, with two rods, similar to that of FIG.
3, is used. The branches 40 are curved downwards, being inclined relative to the shanks of the spike and the arrangement is such that no part of the spike covers the shoe of the rail.
The pressure transmitting member 43 consists of a wedge or a wedge, the lower face of which has three ribs 90, 91 and 92, spaced apart in the transverse direction and its upper face carries convex ribs forming between them a concave groove 93 suitable for receiving and coming into contact with the connecting part 42, of circular section, of the clamp. In this case, the two ribs 90 and 91 come into contact with the upper face of the wing of the shoe of the rail and the rib 92 bears on the upper face of the sole under the curved arm 40 of the crampon.
The wedge 43 may be rectilinear or may have the shape of a wedge from one end to the other, that is to say in the direction of the length with respect to the aforesaid ribs. Alternatively, the wedge may be curved with respect to an axis perpendicular to the length of its ribs, the arrangement being such that in each case the arm 40 of the spike is tensioned when the wedge or wedge is engaged. background.
For the device, shown in figs. 16 and 17, the sole comprises, on either side of the notch 34 which serves as a housing for the shoe of the rail, two pairs of vertical bosses 94 and 95, the two bosses 94 being established immediately next to the edge of the rail. 'corresponding wing of the shoe being spaced apart from each other in a direction parallel to the rail. The other two bosses 95 are spaced apart in a similar manner and are established on a straight line which connects the two holes 33 for the studs of the stud and formed in the sole. The sole comprises, in addition and near each of them. its outer edges, another boss 96 with a shoulder or flange which is substantially parallel to the length of the rail when the latter is in place.
The pressure transmitting member 43 is constituted by a plate or strip of spring steel or any other suitable flexible and elastic metal, this plate having the shape of an elongated rectangle, the long sides of which are perpendicular to the length and a small sides of the plate, on each side of the rail, rest on the shoulder or edge. corresponding boss 96 so that it is thus maintained in a position for which the other short side 97 covers, over a short length, part of the upper face of the adjacent flange of the rail shoe while being in contact with this part of the pad.
The long sides of the plate 43 are in contact with the internal faces of the aforesaid two bosses 94 and 95 of each pair so that the plate 43 is prevented from rotating by the effect of the path of the rail.
The sole, on each side of its notch, has a height such, with respect to the thickness of the outer edge of the shoe of the rail, that the lower face of the pressure transmitting member 43 is slightly separated from the upper face of the rail. sole. This arrangement allows, when the organ is first put in place, to bring it into contact with the upper face of the wing of the skate in a position for which it is located beyond the edge or longitudinal side 98 of this upper face.
When the spike is
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
then fully engaged, the member 43 flexes slightly until its lower face is slightly convex with respect to an axis which is located notably above this member while being parallel to the rail so that the member 43 is then in contact with the upper face of the wing 35 at the aforementioned edge or side 98, that is to say at a point which is very close to that where the upper face of the The member 43 is in contact with the part 43 which exerts the pressure of the elastic clamp. The retaining force is therefore transmitted, from the crampon, so to speak directly to the foot of the rail.
The rods 37 of the crampon are bent at their junctions with the two branches 40 as shown at 99 (fig. 16) in two directions, that is to say by moving away from the rail and also by moving away from one. on the other in the direction of the length of the rail, this arrangement facilitating the installation of the tool by which the pressure exerted by the clamp on the pressure transmitting member is stopped when it is desired to remove the rail as in the case of the previous embodiments and as shown in FIG. 1.
This tool 49, which is used to release the pressure, comprises a long rigid arm 50, one end of which has at its upper edge and at its lower edge two plates 100 and 101 which are substantially parallel and spaced apart from one another. 'other in the vertical direction, these plates forming on each of the opposite faces of this end of the arm a pair of horizontal projections and spaced apart in the vertical direction. The two upper projections are suitable for resting on the upper and convex faces of the aforesaid branches 40 of the clamp, while the two lower projections come into contact with the lower and concave faces of these branches.
The arrangement is such that when the opposite end of the arm 40 is forced downwards, the edge 102 of the lower plate 100, which is on the side of the rail, comes into contact with the lower face of the branches 40 of the clamp. so that the part 42, which exerts the pressure and which forms part of the clamp, is moved away from the pressure transmitting member and the latter can then be removed. By acting like each stud, you can remove the rail itself. This removal of the pressure transmitting members and the rails takes place without modifying in any way the engaged position of the studs of the studs with respect to the cross member.
For the variant, shown in fig. 18, the pressure transmitter member 43, instead of being in contact, by that of its short sides 103 which is spaced from the rail, with a boss which is part of the sole has a short side which bears on one of the two rods 37 of the clamp to prevent the member 43 from moving away from the rail. This short side 103 has a semi-circular notch 104 with the aid of which it engages on the neighboring rod 37, of circular section, of the crampon.
In this case, the upper face of the sole has bosses 94 and 95, like that shown in FIGS. 16 and 17, but the opposite sides of. each pair of bosses are inclined relative to the length of the rail instead of being perpendicular thereto, the inclination being such that they are substantially parallel to the general direction of the adjacent granche of the stud, when the The whole is seen in plan (fig. 18). The pressure transmitter member 43, which also has the shape of a plate, is in contact, by its large opposite sides 105, with these bosses.
The end of this plate, which is in contact with the wing of the skate, is clamped against the upper face of the latter by the part 42 of the crampon which exerts the pressure, as in the previous embodiment. Preferably, the two short sides 103 of? the member 43 are oblique with respect to the two long sides 105 so as to be parallel or substantially parallel to the length of the rail as in the case of the preceding arrangement. The two long sides 105 are inclined relative to the length of the rail at an angle corresponding to the inclination of the opposite faces of the bosses 94 and 95 of the sole.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
In the latter case, the pressure transmitting member 43 is removed by sliding it first towards the rail and then along the latter to separate it from the rod 32 of the crampon with which it was in contact with, after which the pressure exerted by the head of the spike can be released, as described above.
Fig. 19 shows another variant of the embodiment of figs. 16 and 17, the crampon used being an ordinary crampon whose head 42, which serves to exert pressure, is stationary relative to the shank of the crampon. The pressure transmitter member 43 is similar to that shown in FIGS. 21 and 22 but it is a little shorter. This member 43 flexes when the crampon is fully engaged and, in this case, it provides, on its own, all the necessary elasticity between the rail and the crampon which itself is rigid.
The sole is more or less of a standardized type but it is not completely so in the sense that it comprises, near each side of the notch 34, a single pair of bosses 94 'analogous to those provided for the device of figs. 16 and 17, these bosses being suitable for coming into contact with the opposite lateral edges of the pressure transmitting member 43 to prevent its angular displacement by the effect of the path of the rail, as in the case of the two preceding arrangements.
The pressure transmitting member 43 is prevented from moving away from the rail by the contact of its outer end with the rod 37 of the crampon as in the case of the previous variant. Removal of the rail is permitted by bringing the member 43 closer to the web of the rail, this member being sufficiently elastic for this bringing together to take place. When organ 43 has moved away
EMI11.1
from the head 42 'of the' craÍnpon, it can be \ mlevé 'to allow the eb, lifting: Î1t and the installation of the rail.
For all of the embodiments described above, the sole 32 are preferably made of cast parts, that is to say of cast iron, but if it is desired to laminate the sole, by constituting it. for example in steel, it is possible to replace the aforementioned bosses, provided on each lateral side of the notch, in the case of figs. 16 to 19 ,. by a groove 106 (fig. 20) which is rolled in the upper face of the sole, near each outer edge thereof, this groove 106 being parallel or substantially parallel to the length of the rail when the latter is in square.
The groove receives and retains the short branch 107 by contact with the opposite faces thereof, of the pressure transmitting member which has, in substance, the shape of an L; the large branch 108 of this member corresponding to the member, in the form of a plate, of the two preceding variants.
For the latter arrangement, the contact between the short branch 107 of said member and the edges of the groove 106 prevents the displacement of the plate in a direction in which it moves away from the rail and ceases to be in contact with the shoe. of the latter while preventing rotation of the plate by the effect of the path of the rail.
For the embodiment shown in figs. 21 and 22, the rail is fixed directly to the cross member 31 without the interposition of a sole and each rail is connected to each cross member by two studs 36, each of which comprises two rods fully connected to each other by elastic branches 40 and by a part 42 intended to exert the pressure, the two elastic branches 40 being arranged, as clearly visible in FIG. 22, on one side of a straight line which connects the two rods of the crampon and which is spaced from the rail when the latter is in place.
The device is, moreover, such that the two rods of each crampon, which is located on each of the opposite sides of the rail, are directly in contact with the adjacent edge of the shoe of this rail to keep the latter in place. square.
However, for the device shown in Figs. 21 and 22, the length of the arm of the crampon is such that, when the latter is placed in the above-mentioned manner, the part 42 exerting the pressure of this crampon,
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
does not cover any portion of the rail shoe as in the previous arrangements.
In this case, the pressure transmitting member 43 is formed by a sleeve having, in cross section, the shape of an elongated rectangle. The sleeve can be engaged over the two legs 40 of the clamp near where they are connected by part 42, the major axis of the cross section of the sleeve being parallel to the length of the rail.
Each sleeve 43 has such a length, - as visible to the left of FIGS. 21 and 22, that it can be engaged on the two aforesaid branches 40 while occupying a position for which its internal end 109 is hardly spaced from the external edge of the adjacent wing of the shoe so that the rail can be removed and put back in place without having to change the crampon locations. To facilitate the positioning of each sleeve, the opposite side edges thereof are cut out at 110 near the outer end of each sleeve so that the outer bent portions 111 of the branches 40 can be housed in. the notches thus formed.
Each sleeve can be pushed inward along the branches 40 until it comes to occupy a position for which it transmits the pressure, the lower face of the sleeve coming into contact with the adjacent upper face of the wing of the pad, this contact for the transmission of the pressure being facilitated by inclining the branches 40 on which the sleeve can slide, these branches being inclined downwards and towards the shoe of the rail, as clearly visible in FIG. 21.
To retain each sleeve 43 in its position for. which it is in contact with the rail, there is provided in the upper wall of the sleeve, at its internal end 109, a tongue 112, partially cut, which is folded downwards, when the sleeve occupies its active position, until ' to come into contact with the adjacent face of the part 42 of the crampon, which exerts the pressure, as shown to the right in FIGS. 21 and 22 where the sleeve is drawn in the position for which it is in contact with the rail.
The internal dimension of the sleeve longitudinally with respect to the / rail, -is equal to the total width of the set of the two branches 40 on which the sleeve slides, so that the sleeve is prevented from moving angularly about a vertical axis by the effect of the path of the rail.
It should be noted that the device, shown in figs. 21 and 22 can be used, if desired, in the event that an ordinary non-notched sole is interposed between the rail and the sleeper, although the studs of the stud hold the rail in place.
In figs. 23 and 24 show another device for which a sole having a standardized shape is used. The crampon is analogous to that shown in figs. 3 and 4 and the pressure transmitting member 43 is constituted by a metal plate which, being seen in plan, has substantially the shape of a V.
The two arms 113 of the plate diverge in such a way that they are parallel to the corresponding branches 40 of the clamp, when the plate 43 is in place, and that they are located under the said branches 40. The connecting crossmember 114, of this V-shaped member 43 is in contact, via its upper face, with part 42 of the clamp which exerts pressure and it extends beyond this part to come into contact with the upper face of the outer edge 48 of the adjacent wing of the skate.
The pressure transmitting member 43 is prevented from rotating about a vertical axis, by the effect of the path of the rail, by the contact of each of the free ends of its arms 113 with the corresponding rod 37 and, to maintain the member 43 in this position, is made to include at each of the ends of the arms 113 a semi-circular notch 115 which forms a seat for the adjacent face of the corresponding rod of the crampon.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The durail removal is done in a manner similar to that described for the device shown in Figs. 3 and 4, that is to say by making a tool, suitable for releasing the pressure, act on the retaining arm of the crampon, which makes it possible to move the pressure transmitting member from onboard towards the rail so as to move the seats 115 away from the studs of the stud and then in a longitudinal direction with respect to the rail to disengage the stud after which the rail can be removed and replaced.
As indicated above, a standard-shaped sole is used for this device.
For all of the embodiments described above, the pressure transmitting member 43 is preferably made of spring steel which is subjected to a heat treatment which gives it high resilience. This high resilience, combined with the elasticity of the part of the stud through which the pressure is exerted, provides a highly elastic retaining contact for the rail.
The various embodiments described make it possible to fix a rail to a cross member, using non-threaded studs, and to remove or reassemble the rail without having to modify the active position of each stud by compared to rail. For several of these devices, for which a sole is interposed between the rail and the cross member, it is possible to use a sole formed like those which are commonly used so that the invention can be advantageously applied to installations of existing railways.
