 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

  PERFECTED HYDRAULIC BRAKING SYSTEM.

   The present invention relates to hydraulic braking installations for vehicles, machines and other vehicles, installations in which a master cylinder or other source of a pressurized liquid under the control of a pedal or a lever is connected. , by a sealed pipe, to one or more cylinders, in the or each of which moves at least one piston, linked to a braking member provided with a friction lining that the liquid under a relatively high control pressure P function of the action on the pedal or the lever makes it possible to apply against the internal surface of a rotating drum of a wheel or other movable member to be braked, against at least one elastic return device.

   However, the friction linings are liable to wear such that the brake drum is supposed to constitute a fixed stop in the radial direction, the front position of the or each lining and of the jaw or other member which carries it and as a result of the piston which is linked to it varies with this wear. Despite this wear, the lining, its support and the piston must, however, have a constant return stroke under the action of the return spring (s), for a given brake, in order to always allow the same braking action for a given brake. same given stroke of the pedal or brake lever.

   In order to obtain a constant return stroke, it has already been proposed to insert on the pressurized liquid supply pipe just upstream of the or each brake cylinder an auxiliary cylinder, in which moves between two upstream and downstream limit positions (relative to the direction of flow of the control liquid) a piston; this piston is provided with a valve which opens automatically when said piston is in its downstream limit position so that:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 on the one hand, the displacement of this piston between these two upstream and downstream positions sweeps in the auxiliary cylinder a volume which is equal to the variation in volume in the brake cylinder corresponding to the desired return stroke controlled by the lining (s) brake from their stop against the brake drum.

   and, on the other hand, direct communication is ensured between said auxiliary cylinder and the source of the liquid under the control pressure (P) at the downstream end of the piston stroke, so as to allow, not only the establishment of this pressure control in the brake cylinder but also the possible flow, from upstream to downstream, of an additional quantity of liquid under the control pressure, this quantity being intended to compensate for the displacement that the front position of the brake lining (s) as a result of the wear, during the previous operation, of the said lining (s).

   However, the known auxiliary cylinder and valve piston devices have a serious drawback: if they take into account - and this is their raison d'être - the variation in the downstream position of the brake lining (s) due to the wear of the surface (s) coming into contact with the stopper and friction, they do not take into account, on the other hand, a possible increase in the diameter of the brake drum during a braking period, but such an increase may occur produce in some cases. This brake drum can, in fact, because of the expansions due to its heating following long and vigorous braking and / or / the braking pressure (which is moreover all the higher than the braking is more energetic so that the two causes combine their effects) undergo elastic expansion.

   This expansion therefore temporarily changes the position of the stop, position from which the lining (s) and their supports complete the fixed return stroke at the end of braking. We see immediately that this stroke will be reduced or even eliminated by the contraction of the drum during its cooling or the cessation of the pressure which has deformed it. If, after this contraction, a residual play still remains between the drum and the linings carried by the jaws or other supports, there is no harm.

   If, on the other hand, the contraction of the drum has absorbed the entire return stroke of the linings, they will be in contact with the drum and during the normal consecutive stroke of the vehicle or other device fitted with the brake, a stroke which should not not be braked, the brake will continue to operate and this with all the more energy as the residual pressure prevailing in the slave cylinder as well as in the pipe which connects this cylinder to the auxiliary cylinder and in this cylinder itself behind the piston valve is greater, this pressure being due to the action of the return spring (s) and, above all, to the action of the drum which contracts.

   However, in the known devices for reasons which are quite ancillary and not critical in nature, in particular with a view to ensuring the tightness of the valve, the calibration of the spring of this valve is chosen such that this residual pressure can reach due to the contraction. of the brake drum to a relatively high value of the order of several times the residual value given by the return spring (s) of the jaws. It follows that although this residual and untimely braking is not serious in itself, it nevertheless leads to a loss of power which is far from being negligible.

   The subject of the invention is a hydraulic braking installation of the known type which comprises, on the pipe connecting the pressure source to the brake slave cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder device in which a piston provided with a valve intended to move. determine the return stroke of the braking component (s), this installation being improved in order to avoid the drawback analyzed above, by making the residual braking due to the contraction very low

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 brake drum after heating or a great pressure which dilated it.

   This installation is remarkable in particular in that the return spring of the valve on its seat is calibrated so that the maximum pressure (p1) that can prevail downstream of this valve, when the pedal or other operating member is in the position. of rest and consequently the valve on its seat, is only a few hundred grams per square centimeter greater than the pressure (p1) created at rest, downstream of said valve, by the return spring or springs of the movable braking components after the maximum possible wear of the friction lining (s).

   Thanks to this characteristic relating to the calibration of the valve spring, even if the brake drum which determines the "front" position of the mobile and controlled braking member (s) does not remain fixed and returns, by a contraction following expansion. , in contact with the friction lining (s), their contact pressure remains limited to this maximum reduced pressure (p1) and is not capable of being a hindrance; the loss of power which results from the untimely friction of the shoe (s) on the brake drum remains very low and is negligible.

   Of course, because of the above characteristic, the differential pressure which at rest supports the valve on its seat is reduced since it is no longer than a few hundred grams against several kilos in the installations previously proposed. It is therefore important that the contact surfaces between the valve and its seat be particularly careful.

   Preferably, a rigorous seal between the valve and its seat is obtained, according to the present invention and despite the low bearing pressure of the valve on said seat, by providing an annular seal embedded in a groove, formed in the one of the two contact surfaces provided, one on the valve and the other on the part forming a seat, and against which bears an annular rib formed on the other of said surfaces.

   Other characteristics and advantages will result from the description which follows.

   The braking installation shown in FIG. 1 is of a known type. It comprises a pedal 1 oscillating around a fixed axis 2 and connected by a rod 3 to the piston 4 of a master cylinder 5 supplied with oil or other liquid from a tank under load 5a. This usual master cylinder is such that, under the action of the piston 4, said master cylinder delivers the liquid under a pressure P in parallel in four pipes 6a,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 6b, 6c, 6d relating to the four wheels of the vehicle. Each of these pipes ends, as shown for the pipe 6c, at the connection 7 of an auxiliary device D intended to limit the return stroke of the brake shoes, relating to one of the wheels. This device D will be described in detail later.

   The device D is fixed on the brake cylinder 9 fixed itself in the usual manner on the wheel plate, not shown. In this cylinder move, in opposite directions, two pistons 10. These pistons act by pushrods 11 on the brake shoes (or shoes) 12.

  These are mounted to oscillate around axes 13 on the wheel plate 13a and are returned to the rest position represented by a return spring 14. These segments carry the friction linings 15 subject to wear and which, after a stroke given to segments, that is to say after a given stroke of the pistons 10 and a given increase V in the volume of the chamber 16 formed between these pistons, press on the brake drum 7, fixed on the wheel to be braked .

   The device D comprises (Fig. 2) as known a cylindrical body 13 in which is fixed, by screwing at 19, the threaded connection 7, intended for attachment to the pipe 6c for the arrival of the liquid under control or return pressure. of this liquid at its source, a seal 20 seals. The connection is pierced with an axial hole 21 which opens into the bore of cylinder 18.

   This bore is closed downstream by a screwed stopper 22 and is crossed right through, in front of this stopper, by a screw 23 provided with a head 24 which rests on a flat circular bearing surface 25 of the cylinder 18, with interposition of a seal 26. A mark 27 is provided on the head 24 opposite a graduation of the range 26 or vice versa. The other end of the screw 23 is threaded at 28 and allows the assembly to be fixed in the threaded hole of the brake cylinder 9. A second seal 30 is placed between two bearing surfaces opposite the cylinders 18 and 9.

   In its part located inside the cylinder 13, the screw 23 comprises, still as known, a crescent-shaped groove so that the remaining cylindrical portion 31 is eccentric. This eccentric portion has a number of radial holes 32, making the bore of cylinder 18 communicate with a channel 33, formed axially in this screw.

   The bore of the cylinder 13 between the connection 7 and the eccentric portion of the screw 23 is formed of two stepped cylindrical parts 34 and 35, the part 34 has a larger diameter than the part 35.

   In this bore (34-35) is housed, as already known per se, a stepped piston provided with a valve.

   The present invention relates to improvements to this piston, to this valve and to the accessory devices which are combined with them, that is to say to everything which will now be described.

   Following the example of execution shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the piston is formed by the combination of two parts 36 and 37 joined together by screwing at 38. The part 36 is stepped and its two parts, of different diameters, slide, without appreciable play, in the parts 34 and 35 of the bore. The sealing of the piston is ensured by two seals 33 and 39. The two parts of the piston form between them a cylindrical cavity 40 which opens onto the two faces of the piston by axial channels 41 and 42, formed respectively in parts 36 and 37. of this piston.

   The channel 41 is provided at its upstream end with lateral crenellations 43 which allow the pressurized liquid which arrives through the hole 21 of the connector 7 to gain the annular space between this connector and the seal 33 of the piston, even when the latter abuts by the end sections

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 mittens against the connector 7 around the hole 21. At its other end, the channel 41 opens freely into the cavity 40. On the other hand, the passage between this cavity and the channel 42 is controlled by a valve. This comprises a valve head 44 in which is formed a groove which contains a ring 45 of rubber or other elastic substance, intended to ensure the tightness of the closure when it is resting against the. valve seat.

   This seat is formed by the projecting end 46 of part 37 of the piston.

   The head of the valve extends: on the one hand, on the side opposite to the seal ring 45, in the form of a skirt 47, the outer surface of which is prismatic, for example with eight sides; this skirt ensures the guiding of the valve by sliding in the cylindrical cavity 40, while leaving longitudinal passages
48 of sufficient total section for the flow of the liquid under pressure and on the other hand, on the side of the seal ring 45, by a rod or tail 49, mounted with clearance in the channel 42 so as to provide an annular passage 50 sufficient for the flow of liquid under pressure. This tail has a length such that, when the seal 45 is on the seat 46, it protrudes by a certain length at (Fig. 2) the end of the part 37 of the piston.

   This end is provided with crenellations 51 allowing free lateral flow of the liquid, while the stem of the valve has at its end a slot 52 for a screwdriver.

   The valve 43 is returned to its seat by a spring 53. The latter bears, on the one hand, against the part 36 of the piston around the channel 41 and, on the other hand, on an adjustable stop 54. This stop is constituted by a small threaded disc, provided with a slot 55 for a screwdriver, and screwed into a cylindrical and threaded bore 56 formed in the skirt 47 of the valve.

   It will be noted that the upstream portion of the skirt 47 of the valve is, when the valve 44 is on its seat, at a distance 12 from the upstream bottom of the cavity 40, greater than the quantity .Si from which the stem 49 of the valve emerges. then the piston downstream.

   The device D which has just been described is adjusted as a function of the braking device with which it is combined.

   By rotating this screw 23 around its axis, the angular position of the eccentric portion 31 of said screw and consequently the distance to the piston 34 from its generator closest to this piston is adjusted so that the volume displaced in the cylinder 18 when it passes from the upstream stop position against the connection 7 (position shown) to the downstream stop position against this eccentric portion 31 of the screw 23 corresponds exactly to the increase V in volume that it is necessary to subjecting the chamber 16, formed between the pistons 10 in the brake cylinder 9 to communicate to the jaws 12 the stroke e which will bring the linings 15 into contact with the drum 17, assuming that these linings have not undergone any wear during the previous braking.

   Furthermore, the calibration of the spring 53 for returning the valve 44 on its seat is established, in accordance with the present invention, so that the piston (36,37) being in the position shown and the valve on its seat, the pressure prevailing in cylinders 18 and 9 which is necessary to lift the valve from its seat has a value (pi) which is only a few hundred grams per cm2 greater than the residual pressure (p2) than the return spring 14 jaws can create in these cylinders the valve 14 being assumed on its seat.

   It will be noted that the exact calibration of the spring 53 is ensured by the adjustment of the position of the support stop 54 of the spring. For this adjustment, carried out before mounting the device D (or following its removal), the valve is immobilized using a screwdriver engaged in the groove 52 of the tail of said valve, while at the using another screwdriver, engaged

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 in the groove 55 of the disc 54, this disc is rotated in the desired direction to cause it to be screwed or unscrewed relative to the skirt 47 of the valve.

   Of course, the calibration of the spring 53 depends on the residual pressure Pr which prevails upstream of the device D at rest, a pressure which acts in the same direction as said spring 53 and correspondingly reduces the force to be requested from this spring.

   Preferably, p1 = p2 + 200 g / cm2 is taken; the calibration of spring 53 is therefore established in this case for the parent pressure (p2 - pr + 200 g).

   As an example, while the braking pressure P is of the order of 90 kg / cm2, p2 is generally of the order of 3 k / cm2 and the spring is calibrated at (3 + 0.2 - pr ).

   To better specify if pr (upstream residual pressure) is for example 0.6 k / cm2, the spring 53 is calibrated at
 EMI6.1
 3.2 - 0.6 = 2.6 k / cm2.

   The adjustable stop 54 naturally allows the initial calibration of the spring to be modified during service if p2, that is to say the residual pressure due to the spring 14 for returning the jaws, varies.

   This being said, the operation is as follows: when a braking maneuver is performed, the liquid is pumped from the master cylinder 5 into the pipes 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d. For each braking device, this liquid moves the piston (36, 37) from its upstream rest position until it abuts against the eccentric portion 31 of the screw 23. The volume thus swept by this piston into the cylinder 18 corresponds due to the angular adjustment of the screw 23 to the increase in volume V of the chamber 16 necessary to apply the linings 12 to the drum 17 if these linings have not suffered wear during braking previous.

   However, a little before the end of the stroke of the piston (36, 37) in the cylinder 18, the shank 52 of the valve 44 abuts against the eccentric portion 31 of the screw 23 which raises this valve thus allowing the pressure, produced in the master cylinder 5 by the pedal 1, to be exerted in the slave cylinder 9 with a view to braking and also in practice to fill the additional volume, necessary due to the wear of the linings during previous braking.

   At the end of the maneuver, when the brake pedal 1 returns, the spring 14 for the return of the jaws 12 bringing, by their intermediary, the pistons 10 of the slave cylinder 9 to their rest position, at the same time returns , the piston (36, 37) in its upstream position shown.

   At the same time, the valve 44 drops the downstream pressure from the value of the operating pressure P to the value p1 which is determined by the calibration of the return spring 53 and which is barely greater than the pressure p2 that can be supplied by the return springs 14 of the jaws.

   However, if the brake drum 17 undergoes during vigorous and prolonged braking a heating giving rise to a temporary expansion, from which the jaws complete the return stroke, at the end of this braking and if, after cooling , the tension of the drum is greater than e, this drum comes to tighten on the jaws, but the pressure between the drum and the jaws cannot increase above p1 because the valve 44 rises to this value.

   The unwanted braking which then occurs is insignificant if one wants to compare the value of p1 (3.2 k / cm2 in the example chosen) with that P (90 k / cm2) of the effective braking.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

   Of course, at the end of the first normal braking without heating, which follows the incident, the normal clearance e is automatically reformed again.
It will be noted that the residual pressure p1 must be sufficient to ensure proper application of the seal 39 against the wall of the cylinder 18, which is indeed the case with the numerical values given by way of example.

   Furthermore, the tightness of the valve is perfectly ensured for these numerical values thanks to the seal 45.

   In fig. 4 shows a first variant in which the seal 45a is engaged in a groove of the part 37a of the piston (36a-37a), while the valve 44a comprises a rib 46a for bearing on said seal.

   In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the spring 53b bears, on one side, directly in the bottom of the prismatic skirt 47b of the valve 44b and, on the other side, on a support washer 54b screwed into a threaded housing 57 provided in the bottom front of the portion 37b of the piston (37b-33b) at the end of the channel 41b.

   Finally, in Figs. 6 and 7 show another variant, in which the spring 53c is supported on one side against a support washer
54c screwed into the piston and, on the other side, on a washer 58, itself resting on a prism 59. This prism is pinned at 60 on a pin 61 which is eccentric with respect to the prism and which pivots in two diametrically opposed surfaces of the skirt 47c of the valve 44c. One end of this axis has a groove 62 for a screwdriver which allows rotations of 360 / n, n being the number of sides of the prism, to adjust the position of the support washer 58. In view of the 'introduction of the screwdriver, the part 37c of the piston has an opening 63 upstream of the gasket 38c and the cylinder 18c and its connection 7c are themselves pierced with holes 64, 65.

   A plug 66 with seal 67 enables these holes 64, 65 to be closed after the adjustment which can therefore be carried out without dismantling the device.

   Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example.

   The invention is applicable, of course, to any hydraulic braking installations, whenever intensive braking can cause expansion of the drum or other member to be braked and consequently, on contraction, the inadvertent braking of which the The invention makes it possible to eliminate the drawbacks by limiting their action to a very low value.
