  PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF POUR LE GRILLAGE DE MINERAIS SULFURES FINEMENT DIVISES ET D'AUTRES MATIERES FINEMENT DIVISEES CONTENANT DU SOUFRE GRILLABLEc

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  METHOD AND DEVICE FOR THE ROASTING OF FINALLY DIVIDED SULPHIDE ORES AND OTHER FINALLY DIVIDED MATERIALS CONTAINING ROASTING SULFUR
When roasting granular sulphide ores with a grain size of, for example, 0 to 6 mm, in turbulent moving layers, some of the roasted material, especially the fine constituents, is drawn out of the oven with the roast gas stream and deposited in dust separators mounted after the furnace, while the coarser constituents of the roast residue are discharged directly from the turbulently moving layer. The layer height can in this case be limited by an overflow for the coarse particles of the roasting residue.

   On the other hand, when roasting very finely granulated sulphide ores, in particular flotation concentrates with a granulation of less than 0.2 mm, and in the case of high loads, for example between 200 and 600 kg of sulfur per meter square of roasting area and per hour, with corresponding gas velocities, all of the roasted powdery reaction material is drawn out of the oven along with the roasting gas. The layer in turbulent motion itself is formed of not very compact agglomerates mixed with very fine material.

   As a result of the strong turbulence in the layer, these loose agglomerates are however quickly crushed and also entrained with the gas, in the form of fine dust, the height of the bed layer in turbulent motion being kept constant by the newly introduced agglomerates. As a general rule, the layer height will be lower when using flotation concentrates than in the case of a granular mesh material with an overflow fitting, and it cannot be returned at will. higher, it results among other things, the inconvenience which cannot be extracted,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 by means of the refrigeration elements mounted in the layer in turbulent motion, a lower quantity of calories than with layers of great height.

   In extreme cases, the turbulent moving layer is blown away entirely, so that even scorching is not possible.

     However, it has been found that finely divided sulphide ores and other finely divided materials containing roastable sulfur, particularly flotation concentrates having predominantly less than 0.2 mm granulation, can be roasted with particular results. particularly advantageous, by means of oxygenated gases., in layers in turbulent movement in which are mounted., preferably, refrigeration elements by introducing, in whole or in part, the material to be grilled in the layer in turbulent movement, in passing it through one or more compartments, separated from the advantageously larger remaining part of the chamber for the layer in turbulent motion,

   and by subjecting said material in these compartments where one maintains a load, per unit of time and area, higher than that which is in the remaining part of the layer in turbulent motion, to a preliminary grilling with the aim of subjecting the finely divided material to agglomeration, and by ensuring, with a nart, that the material thus agglomerated can pass from these compartments into the remaining part of the layer in turbulent motion, where it is practically completely toasted, and , on the other hand, so that, conversely, the heavily roasted material can pass from there into the compartments in question.

   The subdivision of the layer chamber in turbulent motion can be effected by means of partitions, through which the exchange of material between the compartments, in which the preliminary roasting takes place, and the remainder of the chamber is only possible in a restricted measure, by being, for example, made difficult or even impossible in the upper and middle part of the layer in turbulent motion but without being impeded in the lower part of this layer. As a result, layers of various heights are formed in the different compartments, the height of the layer of a small compartment being lower than that of a large compartment.

   In this way, a specifically larger quantity of introduced gas is supplied to the layer of the small compartment, and the turbulent moving grilled material is constantly thrown by the grilling gas which forms in the larger compartment, hence. it returns, by the bottom, in the smallest compartment.

   The introduction, according to the present invention, of the material to be roasted in a pre-roasting chamber, which is advantageously smaller than the remainder of the chamber, has the effect that not only is obtained in this pre-roasting chamber an accumulation of the material rich in sulfur;, newly introduced, in the turbulent moving layer consisting for the rest mainly in the roasted segment, that is to say a higher average sulfur concentration, but that as a result of the greater speed gas, matter also reacts more intensely. These two facts lead to local temperature rises, resulting in a slight agglomeration of the particles still relatively rich in sulfur which are found in fairly high quantities in the preliminary roasting chamber.

   As a result of the turbulent movement, these agglomerated particles are quickly distributed over the remainder of the layer and cooled again before they can unite to form fairly large conglomerates, so that the turbulent movement cannot be disturbed. The scorching heat is advantageously removed from the remaining part of the layer chamber in turbulent motion.

   In addition to cooling by means of refrigeration elements which penetrate or limit the turbulently moving layer, additional, easily adjustable refrigeration of the turbulent moving layer can be achieved, allowing precise temperature control. , causing liquids to reach the layer

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 evaporable inert substances and / or dissociable liquid or solid substances which release sulfur dioxide, in particular by endothermic dissociation reaction.

   The introduction, into the preliminary roasting compartments, of the oxygenated gases necessary for this roasting, can be carried out separately and independently of the introduction into the remaining part of the layer chamber in turbulent motion.

   The favorable influence of a partial agglomeration of the material to be roasted on the conditions prevailing in the turbulent moving layer can be further reinforced, when introducing, in addition to the roasting residues which pass from the remaining part of the chamber with a layer in turbulent movement in the compartment or compartments used for the preliminary roasting, residues taken from the layer in turbulent movement and simultaneously, or in their place, fairly coarse constituents of the flying roasting residues which are entrained out of the moving layer turbulent with the roasting gases and which first separate from these gases, directly or through the remaining part of the turbulently moving layer chamber, into the compartment (s), and when subjecting the residues and / or rather coarse constituents,

   to a wire mesh bonding with the newly introduced toasting material.

   The residues from the turbulently moving layer and / or the coarser constituents of the flying roasting residues are, in this case, fed, separately or mixed with the finely divided grilling material, to the turbulent moving layer. of the compartment (s).

   When the roasting residues are introduced without having previously mixed them with the material to be roasted, significant heat losses can be avoided by bringing them as far as possible to the temperatures they present at the outlet of the layer in turbulent movement and / or dust separators.

   However, the roasting residues can also be mixed, while still hot, with the material to be roasted before being introduced into the turbulently moving layer. Mixing the material to be grilled with still hot grilling residues offers the advantage of pre-drying the raw material which, in most cases, is still wet, and of causing the production of fairly coarse grains by formation of crusts. the surface of the hot particles of the roasting residue, already before the introduction into the turbulent moving layer.

   The roasting residues, mixed or not with the material to be roasted, are introduced advantageously into the lower part of the compartment (s).

   The separation of the coarser constituents of the flying roasting residue can, for example, be achieved by means of simple impact separators. It is also possible to arrange and use, for this purpose, the flues of exhaust heat boilers mounted after the furnace.

   For the prior roasting with an agglomerating effect of the material to be roasted, between approximately 20 and 40% of the roasting residues which are formed in total are brought back into the layer with turbulent movement.

   By way of indication, but in no way limiting, there is shown in the accompanying drawings an embodiment of a device for implementing the method according to the present invention. In these drawings: - Figure 1 is an overall view of a layer chamber in turbulent motion; - Figure 2 is the horizontal projection of this chamber.

   In Figure 1, the roasting of the material coming from the distribution device (2) and introduced at (3) into the chamber (1) is carried out

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 in the turbulently moving layer (4) by means of the oxygenated gases coming from the air tank (5) and blown from below through the grid (6). The pipes (7) and (8) serve to withdraw the roasted material from the layer of the roasting gases which have formed escaping at (9). To subdivide the layer in turbulent motion (4) into compartments of different sizes (4a) and (4b), internal parts (10) are provided which do not oppose an exchange of the material between these compartments in the part. lower layer in turbulent motion.

   In Figure 2, there is also shown the refrigeration elements (11) not shown in Figure 1, through which a heat vehicle. The refrigeration elements (11) can also be arranged vertically with respect to the direction of flow of the material to be grilled; in this case, they are advantageously given a shape such that the different compartments of the layer in turbulent motion still communicate with each other.

  It is possible, for example, to use registers of tubes, the latter being arranged vertically one above the other with wide intervals between them.

   The turbulently moving layer chamber may have any section, for example circular, annular, oval, square, or rectangular.

   The subdivision of the turbulent moving layer chamber can advantageously be effected by partitions arranged as refrigeration elements. Thus the partition (10) of Figure 1 can be replaced by a register of refrigeration tubes, these tubes being placed very close to each other, thus obtaining in the middle and upper part of the moving layer turbulent virtually complete separation between the pre-roasting chamber and the subsequent roasting chamber. The refrigeration elements are preferably placed in the part of the chamber which is not used for preliminary roasting. The compartments where the preliminary roasting takes place can communicate with separate air reservoirs, intended for the supply of oxygenated gases.

   By applying the process according to the present invention, it is possible to raise the height of the turbulent moving layer, constituted by very finely divided sulphide ores, and thus obtain a safer roasting, or even make it only then possible; in this way, it is also possible to extract a greater quantity of calories from the layer.

   In addition, greater flexibility is obtained in the production capacity of the furnace, the height of the layer in turbulent movement being able to be modified according to the operating conditions: In the case of fairly heavy loads, a layer height greater than high and it is then possible by means of the unmodified cooling surface to extract a higher quantity of heat from the layer than in the case of a lower load with a correspondingly lower layer height. The accumulation of dust in the dust separators is significantly lower than usual, since one can remove from the turbulently moving layer even between 20 and 30% of the roasting residue in agglomerated form.

   The increase in the proportion of fairly coarse particles in the roasting residue also offers the advantage of facilitating the transport and subsequent treatment of the roasting residue.

    EXAMPLE.

   The turbulently moving layer chamber of an oven has been divided, by mounting a refrigeration register, into two compartments, the areas of which are respectively about 1/3 and 2/3 of the total surface of the layer, the small compartment receiving the flotation pyrite. With an hourly load of 420 kg of sulfur in the form of a 48% flotation concentrate per square meter of total roasting surface, an average sulfur content of 1.3% is established in the small compartment, and a concentration of only 0.85% in the large compartment which follows it.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

  The height of the layer which, under otherwise identical conditions before the division of the layer into compartments of different sizes, was about 25 - 30 cm in the resting state, rises to about 35 cm in the small compartment and approx. 55 cm in the large compartment. As a result of the subdividing of the layer according to the present invention, the proportion of particles with a granulation smaller than 1 mm fell from about 85% to about 40%, while the proportion of particles with a granulation larger than 1 mm increased from about 15% to about 60%.
