 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   La figure 1 est une vue en coupe longitudinale d'un mécanisme de changement de vitesse basé sur l'invention;
Les figures 2, 3 et 4 sont des vues en coupe de la partie supérieure du mécanisme et illustrent le passage de conditions de grande vitesse à celle de petite vitesse;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  ROTARY ENERGY TRANSMISSION MECHANISM.

   The invention relates to energy transmission mechanisms in which means are provided for coupling a first rotary element to one or the other of a second and a third rotary element, and in which means are provided to automatically perform the control clutch between the first element and the element chosen from among the second and the third rotary element when a relative angular movement tends to occur between this first element and the other rotary element selected.

   The object of the present invention is to create a mechanism of the type described offering advantages over mechanisms of this type as they have been used and proposed previously.

   According to the invention, there is created a rotational energy transmission mechanism comprising a first rotating element, a second and a third rotating elements coaxial with the first and means of automatic coupling from the first element to the second when the speed of l 'one of these two elements tends to overtake that of the other in a certain direction, means of reciprocating automatic coupling of this first element to the third when the speed of one of these first or third elements tends to exceed that of the other in one. certain direction, and means comprising a control element movable on the axis of the first element for selectively wedging this first element in the engagement position with the second or with the third element.

   So that the invention can be clearly understood and easily applied, it will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a speed change mechanism based on the invention;
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are sectional views of the upper part of the mechanism and illustrate the change from high speed to low speed conditions;
Figures 5 to 8 are detail views corresponding respectively to Figures 1 to 4.

   Referring to the drawings, the first rotary member mentioned above is constituted by a shaft 1 provided with a flange 2 carrying a crown of evenly spaced coupling claws 3, as well as a first and a second series. of helical teeth 4 and 5, both having the same pitch and both having a straight pitch. On the side of the first helical teeth 4 opposite to the coupling claws 3 is mounted a low speed gear wheel 6 on the shaft 1 on a solid journal and on the side of the second series of helical teeth 5 opposite the claws coupling 3, is mounted on the shaft 1 a high speed gear wheel 7, also on a solid journal.

   The low and high speed gear wheels 6 and 8 respectively constitute the second and third rotating elements mentioned above. On the first series of helical teeth 4 is mounted a first intermediate element in the form of a block 8 provided with internal helical teeth which are screwed on the helical teeth 4 so that the block 8 is forced to move along a helix on the 'shaft 1. A second intermediate element also having the shape of a second block 9 is also constrained to move on the shaft in a helix, being provided with internal helical teeth which engage in the helical teeth 5.

   The muffle 8 is provided with a ring of uniformly spaced short axial teeth 10, pawls 11 mounted on pivots 12, and a ring of male teeth 13 for jaw coupling. The low speed gear wheel 6 is provided with a ring of inner teeth 14 of jaw coupling. The muffle 9 is provided with a ring of short, uniformly spaced axial teeth 15, pawls 16 mounted on pivots 17 and also a ring of coupling teeth with male jaws 18. The high speed gear wheel 7 is handled by a crown of inner teeth 19 of jaw coupling. The pawls 11 of the muffle 8 have their jaws directed in the opposite direction to those of the pawls 16 of the muffle 9.

   Looking along shaft 1 from the left side as shown in fig. 1, the pawls 11 have their beaks directed in the direction of clockwise, and the pawls 16 have their beaks directed in a counterclockwise direction.

   The mechanism comprises a control sleeve 20 carrying a first series of axial teeth 21 which continuously mesh with the axial teeth 10 of the block 8, and a second series of axial teeth 22 which continuously mesh with the axial teeth 15 of the block. 9. The angular spacing and the width of the axial teeth of the blocks 8 and 9 and of the control sleeve 20 are the same as the angular spacing and the width of the coupling claws 3.

   The role of the control sleeve 20 is to wedge the coupling claws 3 of the shaft as desired on one of the two muffles 8 and 9 for the transmission of torque to the shaft 1 respectively from the wheels in - Graining 6 and 7. The control sleeve 20 is actuated by means of a selector fork 20A penetrating into a groove 23 of the control sleeve, the fork 20A being mounted so as to be able to slide on a selector rod 20B and therein being connected by a double-acting spring-loaded connecting rod (see for example Figure 1 of patent 424,440).

   It is assumed that the gear wheels 6 and 7 engage respectively in two pinions fixed to a control shaft which one supposes, as

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   for example, being the transmission shaft of an engine, the shaft 1 correspondingly being the controlled or transmission shaft of the mechanism.

   The mechanism is shown in Figure 1 arranged in the high speed position (see also Figure 5). In this position, the jaw coupling teeth 18 of the block 9 mesh with the inner jaw coupling teeth 19 of the high speed gear 7, and the control sleeve 20 is arranged in an axial position as. that its teeth 21 mesh with the coupling claws 3 of the transmission shaft 1. Because the axial teeth 22 of the control sleeve 20 mesh with the axial teeth 15 of the block 9, the latter cannot move helically on the drive shaft 1 and is therefore prevented from disengaging from the control clutch with the high speed gear 7.

   This is thus coupled in such a way that it can be controlled in two directions, to the transmission shaft, which is assumed to be turning anti-clockwise when looking at the mechanism from the left of Figure 1, as indicated by the arrow. The muffle 9 is in a position independent of the pawls, for which the pawls 11 attached to it are axially spaced from the teeth 14 of the jaw coupling of the low speed gear wheel 6, and are retained therein. position by the engagement of the teeth 21 of the control sleeve with the teeth 10 of the block 8.

   If one wishes to switch from high to low speed, this is obtained by moving the rod of the selector 20B to the left until the notch 24 therein receives the stop device 25 so that the spring 26 is compressed and that the fork 20A tends to move the control sleeve 20 to the left. As long as an appreciable torque is transmitted through the high speed gear wheel 7 by means of the meshing teeth 15, 22 and 21.3, the control sleeve 20 does not move along its line. axis.

   When the control torque is interrupted, for example by closing the engine carburetor, the control sleeve 20 is released from its load and moves to the left under the action of the compressed spring rod until its teeth with straight pitch 22 abut against the right ends of the coupling claws of the shaft 3 arranged angularly (see Figures 2 and 6) so as to stop the control sleeve 20 under the conditions as described heretofore.

   Ge movement of the control sleeve 20 brings its series of left axial teeth 21 -, when reaching the coupling claws 3 of the shaft so that at this moment there is no rotary wedging between the flanges 8 and 9 on the one hand and the shaft 1 on the other hand, and the blocks 8 and 9 are able to be screwed onto the respective teeth 4 and 5 with respect to the shaft 1.

   A drive torque is restored at this time by opening the engine carburetor, which has the effect of screwing muffle 9 to the left along shaft 1 until its jaw coupling teeth 18 n 'mesh more with the jaw gear teeth 19 of the high speed gear wheel 7, and that its pawls 16 are engaged with these teeth 19 as with a ratchet.

   Since the two blocks 8 and 9 are coupled to move angularly under the action of the control sleeve 20, the angular movement of the block 9 when it screws to the left forces the block 8 to also screw to the left and so does engage the pawls II of the block 8 with the teeth 14 of the jaw coupling of the low speed gear wheel 6 (Figures 3 and 7). As a result of the applied control torque, the low speed gear wheel 6 accelerates its movement and as soon as it tends to exceed the speed of the shaft 1,

   a pawl 11 of the block 8 engages a tooth 14 of the jaw coupling of the low speed gear wheel 6 and the block 8 is thus screwed to the left against an axial stop 23 so as to engage its teeth 13 of the jaw coupling with the jaw coupling teeth 14 of the low speed gear wheel 6. The angular movement of the muffle 6 screwing to the left causes the muffle 9 to perform a movement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 similarly angular so that it also screws to the left in a position independent of the pawls, for which its pawls 16 are out of the engagement range of the jaw coupling teeth of the high speed gear wheel 7.

   The mechanism is thus engaged at low speed, but is not yet locked in this position.

   The angular movement of the central control sleeve 20 resulting from the screwing movement of the blocks 8 and 9 to the left last mentioned brings the teeth 22 of the control sleeve 20 vis-à-vis the spaces existing between the coupling claws d. 'shaft 3 so that the control sleeve 20 can now move axially to the left under the action of the compressed spring rod, bringing the toothing 22 existing on the control sleeve 20 and continuously meshing with it. the teeth 15 of the block 9, in engagement with the coupling claws 3de the shaft. This condition of the mechanism is shown in Figures 4 and 8.

   The block 8, which is screwed against its axial stop 23 by the control torque, is thus prevented from moving to the right under the action of the overtaking torque, and the mechanism is thus stalled at low speed.

   If when the carburetor is open and the engine torque is transmitted to the shaft 1 through the low speed gear 6, it is desired to switch from low to high speed, we move the selector rod 20B to the right until its notch 27 receives the stopper 25, thereby compressing the spring 28 so that the fork 20A moves the control sleeve 20 to the right, this movement being able to occur freely for so long that a control torque is transmitted through the left block, which, as has been said, is screwed against its axial stop 23 by the control torque.

   The movement of the control sleeve 20 continues to the right until its teeth 22 disengage from the coupling claws 3 of the shaft and its teeth 21 are stopped by the ends of the coupling claws 3 of the shaft. 'tree.

   The muffles 8 and 9 are then free to move angularly with respect to the shaft 1 and when the carburetor is closed, and the control torque is removed, the transmission shaft 1 turns faster than the gear wheel 6 and the muffle 8 is screwed to the right by disengaging its jaw coupling teeth 13 from the teeth 14 of the jaw coupling of the low speed gear wheel 6 thereby causing the engagement of the pawls in the snap-in position with the teeth 14 of the jaw coupling.

   The angular movement of the block 8 causes a similar angular movement of the right block (because the blocks are coupled in their angular movement by the control sleeve 20) which therefore screws to the right so as to bring its pawls 16 in ratchet position with the jaw coupling teeth 19 of the high speed gear wheel 7. The engine speed continues to decrease, as a result of the carburetor closing, and at the moment when the propeller shaft 1 tends to rotate faster than the high speed gear wheel 7, a pawl 16 of the block 9 engages a jaw coupling tooth 19 of the high speed gear wheel 7 and the block 9 is screwed on to the right against an axial stop 24,

     and in this position, its jaw coupling teeth 16 mesh with those of the high speed gear wheel 7. This movement of the block 9 screws the block 8 further to the right in the position independent of the pawls, and also causes the angular displacement of the control sleeve 20 so as to bring its toothing 21 vis-à-vis the spaces between the coupling claws 3 of the shaft. As a result, the control sleeve 20 moves to the right under the action of the spring rod so that its toothing 21 engages with the coupling claws 3 of the shaft.

  The block 9 cannot therefore screw to the left along the shaft when the drive torque is reapplied and the mechanism is thus blocked at high speed (Figures 1 & 5).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   It is desirable to leave a slight angular play between the teeth 21 of the control sleeve 20 and the coupling claws 3 of the shaft so that when the carburetor is opened to restore the control torque, the muffle 9 is screwed on. slightly to the left. When then the control torque is disengaged to change to low speed, the remaining torque moves the block 9 to the right against its stop 24, thus ensuring that the control sleeve 20 is released from any load.

   Conditions are favorable for the use of solid journal bearings, because when the load is transmitted, the gear wheel in function 6 or 7 does not turn relative to the shaft and therefore there is no movement. relative on the bearing when it is loaded. Conversely, when there is a relative rotational movement, the bearing receives no load.
