<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The boilers, tanks or apparatus, subjected to the action of hot gas are generally covered on their face exposed to fire or to hot gases of an incombustible stony material which then follows in the thickness of the wall and according to the gradual decrease in temperature, a stony material a little less incombustible but more thermo-insulating, then a purely insulating material and finally the sheet metal casing.
This partitioning has proved to be good in many cases, but on the other hand it is ineffective when the hot gases still contain vapors with an acid or corrosive content.
Said vapors penetrate through the stony material which is still somewhat porous in the coating, are cooled by the drop in temperature inside the latter and then condense at the location of the coating where the condensation point is reached. The non-combustible layer certainly resists gases and vapors above the dew point, but it is attacked by fluid acids. In general, a strong deterioration of the insulating material by fluid acids must be expected. In a coating according to the usual arrangement. damage will always occur where the point of condensation is exceeded.
According to the invention, the creation of this damage will be prevented by composing the coating from the inside to the outside of an incombustible stony material, of a heat-insulating material and in the area of exceeding the condensation point of a stony material resistant to acids, and then a metal casing.
The metal casing must be coated on its inner face with a protective layer against corrosion.
The thickness of the layers should be calculated, taking into account the temperature drop that occurs there, so that the point of condensation of gases and vapors entering the coating is in the area of the stone material resistant to acids.
The total thickness of the coating is substantially reduced when part of the layer of acid-resistant stone material is replaced by a corrosion-resistant heat-insulating layer, which may be of suitable light stones, the thickness of the separate layers being chosen. such that the dew point falls into the area of the acid resistant insulating layer.
This insulating layer forms the boundary between the actual heat-insulating material which is above the dew point and therefore not necessarily acid resistant, and the acid resistant material. This has sufficient insulating properties and is resistant to acid condensates settling in this area. For the heat-insulating layer located above the condensation point of gases or vapors and, depending on the temperature conditions, light incombustible stones with a specific weight of about 0.7 or siliceous stones are used, pressed silica, slag wool or similar products.
One can also divide, according to the drop in temperature of the coating and the various insulating materials used, the heat-insulating layer into several stages. Such a division is to be considered for adaptation to thermal sensitivity.
The construction of the wall according to the invention gives the possibility of maintaining the heat losses for a reduced wall thickness.

in the lower limits, so that external thermal insulation, which prevents monitoring of the sheet metal enclosure, is not necessary.
An air gap can also be provided for the separation of the condensation zone from the heat-insulating material. The insulating properties of such a gap, however, become so poor by convection and heat radiation, that the filling thereof in the manner described above with a layer of heat-insulating material resistant to corrosion constitutes a substantial improvement.
The construction of the wall according to the invention also has the advantage of a really greater stability.
The heat-insulating and non-combustible layers are advantageously incorporated in a non-combustible cement and the other layers in an acid-resistant cement.
The new construction is shown in the drawings which show in section: in figure 1 a coating in three layers and in figure 2 a coating in four layers.
According to Figure 1 the coating seen from the inside to the outside consists of a layer of an incombustible stony material 1 to which is connected by means of an incombustible cement 6, a layer 2 of a heat-insulating material .
Then follows, after intercalation of an intermediate layer of an acid resistant cement 2, a layer of an acid resistant stone material which is surrounded by the sheet metal casing 1 by means of an acid resistant cement 7a. The thickness of the separate layers 1, 2, 3. is such that the dew point t falls, during the thermal process t1, â ta, in the area of the acid resistant layer.
In the embodiment according to Figure 2, is further interposed between the heat-insulating material 2 and the stony layer resistant to acids.2, a layer of light stones; acid-resistant and insulating, the thickness of the layers being calculated in such a way that during the drop in temperature inside the coating, the dew point t is in the area of light stones 4.
The sheet metal casing 2. is optionally provided with an evacuation pipe for the condensation products deposited in the coating.
