Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

For the formation of wear coatings, the use of solder wires made of hard alloys capable of forming drops is known. such as stellites, high chromium alloys and austenitic manganese steels. Small metal tubes are also used for this purpose, which are filled with hard metal in pulverized form and in which the latter is sintered; in certain exceptional cases. sintered hard metal welding rods have also already found use.

The present invention relates to an electrode which combines high hardness of the solder material with excellent wear properties. This electrode is not only advantageous for the manufacture of coatings, which are subject to frictional wear, but it can also be used with advantage for the manufacture of tools.

The use of sintered hard metal welding rods for arc welding has hitherto encountered the difficulty of being able to satisfy, with the usual methods of sintering hard metal bodies, the conditions which are required. must impose on an electrode as to its weldability.

Even if these conditions were neglected, there would still remain for such electrodes the risk of the undesirable formation of mixed crystals, which would result. in the weld, significant reductions in wear resistance.

The requirement of good weldability and high resistance to wear of the material supplied by welding can be satisfied. according to the invention with sintered welding electrodes. made of one or more carbides of metals of the fourth to sixth groups of the periodic system or of mixed carbides of these and one or more of the metals of the iron group, as well as alloys of these metals, if the zone the peripheral of the electrode has a higher degree of sintering than the core.

Such electrodes have in the peripheral zone an electrical conductivity with the degree of sintering thereof, while in the core of the electrodes the formation of undesirable mixed crystals is avoided, which is detrimental for the wear properties of the welded material. by the presence of auxiliary metal carbides.

The carbides of the metals of the fourth to sixth groups of the periodic system which find use can be replaced in part by nitrides, possibly borides of these metals.

The formation of the necessary peripheral zone can be obtained in such electrodes, for example by supply by fusion; it can also be determined by the choice of appropriate sintering conditions, such as sintering time and, above all, sintering temperature, taking into account the carbon content of the powder mixture to be sintered in a hydrogen atmosphere. The carbon content must be chosen such that, on the one hand, the decarburization progressing from the outside to the inside has the consequence of appreciably facilitating the sintering of the peripheral zone, while, on the other hand, the The non-decarburized core of the electrode is found to be protected against undesirable reactions of the constituents of alloys on each other, in particular against the formation of mixed crystals.

The dosage of the necessary carbon content can be ensured by the addition of metal, when the carbon content of the available powder mixture is too high, or by the addition of carbon black, when the carbon content is too low . The carbon in excess in the core of the electrode intervenes during the fusion as a form of protective gas.

For electric arc welding, the electrodes according to the invention are advantageously provided with a casing. Compressed envelopes can be used for this as well as envelopes formed by immersion. It is particularly advantageous to use limestone-based envelopes of known type.

Welding electrodes according to the present invention may for example consist of 5 to 50% iron, 48 to 90% tungsten and 2 to 6% carbon.

For the manufacture of such electrodes, for example, powders which contained 20% Fe, 74-75% Tu and 5-25% C were used, which, after grinding together in ball mills, were compressed into rods. and, depending on the fineness of the powder, were sintered in hydrogen for about one to five hours, at temperatures between 1,300 and 1,400 C.

A powder mixture also suitable for the treatment which has just been described comprises, for example, 20% Fe, 56% Tu, 16% Ti and 8% C.

The welding electrodes according to the invention are also suitable for being used in the naked state for welding in a gas atmosphere, such as for example for welding according to the so-called “Arcatom”, “Argonarc” and “Heliarc” processes.
