Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to a new or improved process for insolubilizing filaments, threads, fibers and similar artificial products obtained by spinning solutions of proteins, for example of peanut protein or of casein, in an aqueous solvent medium. calin or other suitable aqueous solvent, in suitable acidified saline coagulation baths.

   The term "insolubilized filaments" denotes here filaments which resist the action of a bath containing 0.1% sulfuric acid and
0.25% sodium sulfate when immersed in it for 90 minutes at 97 C.

   It has already been proposed to carry out the insolubilization of coagulated filaments of wet-spun protein with formaldehyde in the presence of an acidified and highly concentrated aqueous saline solution, for example according to the process described in British Patents Nos. 513,910, 597,497, 533,952 or 605.830. It has also been proposed to insolubilize continuous bundles of protein filaments by the method and with the apparatus described in UK Patents Nos. 642,359 and 623,460.

   The aim of the present invention is to provide a process which makes it possible to manufacture filaments insolubilized in protein and similar filamentous products of the type defined above having better tenacity, of the order of 18 to 22 kg./mm2 at 70 F (21 C) and 65% relative humidity and of the order of 10 to 12 kg / mm2 in the wet state.

   According to the present invention, in the process of producing insolubilized and coagulated filaments and the like in protein from a bundle of protein filaments treated with a curing agent, the individual filaments of the bundle are impregnated with an acidified solution. of formaldehyde, the treated bundle is dried at a temperature below 100 C, then heated to a temperature above 130 C, at least until insolubilization of the individual filaments
Preferably, after the individual filaments of the bundle have been impregnated with the acidified formaldehyde solution, the filaments are stretched by 200%, for example, and dried under tension.

   The curing agent is preferably formaldehyde and, if desired, the treatment with formaldehyde can be carried out in a salt solution, for example a saturated solution of sodium chloride or sodium sulfate containing formaldehyde. and having a pH in the region of 4.5. Even though the filaments must be stretched after impregnation with an acidified solution of formaldehyde, it is generally sufficient that the treatment with the curing agent gives the filament sufficient tenacity to withstand stretching of the order of 150 to 400%. This treatment can be carried out for example in about 3 minutes. After treatment with the curing agent, the filaments can be regarded as fixed.

  They will preferably be washed to rid them almost entirely of salt.

   The treatment of the fixed filaments according to the invention can be carried out on still wet filaments or on previously dried filaments.

   The acidified aqueous formaldehyde solution has, for example, a pH of between 1 and 4 and contains 5 to 37 g of formaldehyde per 100 cm3 of solution. This aqueous formaldehyde solution is preferably also free of salt.

     The complete impregnation of the filaments of a bundle, for example of a continuously moving tow, is preferably carried out by winding.

   The temperatures suitable for the heat treatment are between 140 and 180 C. At 160 C, insolubilization is generally obtained after 10 minutes of heating and the product obtained has usually

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 satisfactory color and good tenacity after acid bath dyeing.

  Heating at 160 ° C for up to 1 hour improves the wet tenacity of fibers after acid bath dyeing, but the color of the fiber tends to become progressively darker on heating and often becomes undesirable when heating. exceeds 30 minutes. An important factor which limits the choice of the maximum temperature that can be used for the heat treatment is the color acquired by the fiber. For example, a temperature of 180 C in air tends to provide an insolubilized product whose coloring is greatly modified. On the other hand, this modification is smaller if the heat treatment at 180 ° C. is carried out in an inert atmosphere, for example in nitrogen.

   In general, the insolubilization requirements determine the minimum time and temperature of the heat treatment required, while the maximum time and temperature is in practice a compromise between the color and tenacity conditions of the fiber after bath dyeing. acid.

   If desired, the filaments can be subjected, after the treatment with a curing agent and before the treatment with the acidified solution of formaldehyde, to a dyeing operation by treating them for example with an aqueous solution of a dye at 40 vs.

   The invention is illustrated by the following examples, in which the parts are by weight.

    TEMPLE .. 1.-
A matured alkaline solution of peanut globulin is spun into a coagulation bath containing an aqueous solution comprising 2% sulfuric acid and 24% sodium sulfate at 30 ° C., extracted from this bath at a higher linear speed. greater than the linear extrusion speed, and the coagulated filaments are stretched in a bath of the same composition. The filaments are then released into a bath containing 22% sodium sulfate and 2.5% sodium chloride at a pH of 8-9 for 5 minutes at 25 C. They are cured in a bath formed of 20% sulfate. sodium, 2.5% sodium chloride and 1.5% formaldehyde at pH 5 for 7 minutes at 50 C.

   The hardened filaments are then passed through a wringer to rid them of the excess liquid and impregnated by immersing them in a solution containing 10% formaldehyde, adjusted to pH 2 by means of hydrochloric acid. The filaments are wrung out again. The impregnated filaments are then dried thoroughly at a temperature of 80 ° C., then subjected to a heat treatment for 30 minutes at 160 ° C., which has the effect of insolubilizing them.

   The fibers thus obtained subjected to the test in a Cambridge Extensometer have a dry tenacity of 10-12 kg / mm2 at 70 F (21) and 65% relative humidity and a wet tenacity of 4- 6 kg / mm2 which is not appreciably reduced after boiling for 90 minutes with 0.1% sulfuric acid and 0.25% sodium sulfate.

    EXAMPLE 2.-
The same process as in Example 1 is repeated, but the impregnation solution comprises 10% formaldehyde and is brought to pH 3 using gluconic acid. The filaments obtained are completely insolubilized and have tenacities in the dry and wet state of 10-12 kg / mm2 and 4-6 kg / mm2, respectively.

    EXAMPLE. 3.-
The same process as in Example 1 is repeated, but the impregnation solution comprises 10% formaldehyde and is brought to pH 3.5 using boric acid. The filaments thus obtained are insolubilized, have a very satisfactory color and tenacities in the dry and wet state of 10-12 kg / mm2 and 4-6 kg / mm2, respectively.

  EXAMPLE 4.-
The same process as in Example 1 is repeated until hardening with formaldehyde and then the filaments are washed with water until

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 they are practically free from salts and they are dried at 80 C. The dry and hardened filaments are then impregnated with a 10% formaldehyde solution brought to pH 2 with hydrochloric acid and the filaments thus impregnated are then impregnated. stretched 200% in air. The drawn filaments are then dried in the stretched state at 80 ° C. and the drawn and dried filaments are subjected to a heat treatment for 30 minutes at 160 ° C. in the relaxed state.

   The obtained insolubilized stretched filaments have a silky appearance and a dry tenacity of 18-22 kg / mm2 and a wet tenacity of 10-12 kg / mm2. By washing the filaments with water, they take on a woolly and crimped appearance without losing their tenacity. The fiber does not lose its tenacity by heating with water at temperatures up to 80 C. By heating with water, and 0.1% sulfuric acid containing 0.25% sodium sulfate at 97 C for 90 minutes, the toughness is reduced to
9-12 kg / mm2 (dry) and 4-6 kg / mm2 (wet).

  EXAMPLE 5. -
The same process as in Example 4 is repeated, but the hardened filaments are not dried before impregnation with the 10% formaldehyde solution at pH 2. The insolubilized filaments thus obtained have a dry tenacity of 15-18 kg / mm2 and a wet tenacity of 7-9 kg / mm2.

  EXAMPLE 6.-
The same process as in Example 4 is repeated, but the cured filaments are dyed with PFN Solway Blue in aqueous solution containing 0.1% sulfuric acid for 5 minutes at 40 C so as to obtain a dye absorption of 2% before impregnation with the 10% formaldehyde solution acidified to pH 2 by means of hydrochloric acid. The dyed filaments have a dry tenacity of 20 kg / mm2 and a wet tenacity of 11 kg / mm2. The tincture is resistant to treatment with boiling water and dilute boiling solutions of acids or alkalis.
