Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

   The present invention relates to mechanisms for actuating a driven part so as to move it by successive angular steps, in response to a movement of a motor driven by a reciprocating angular movement, and so that the parts. successive angular steps have a predetermined magnitude. Although the invention can be employed with motors of various kinds, it is particularly suitable for use with a motor of the rotary solenoid type disclosed in the British patent.
No. 602.812, and the invention will be described below in connection with such an engine.

   In the rotary solenoid described in British Patent No.
602,812. an armature is moved by a predetermined angle by the force created and exerted on the armature as a result of the production of a magnetic field and this during each operation. Such a rotary solenoid has given rise to many applications, particularly in connection with the operation of rotary switches and other mechanisms requiring limited rotary motion.

   The characteristics of these rotary solenords are such that the torque exerted by the armature increases with displacement from the normal rest position, the maximum torque generally existing at the end of the driving stroke. In the event that a load with substantial inertia is present, it happens that the increase in the acceleration of the armature during the driving stroke results in the communication of too much momentum to the load, so that the latter exceeds its goal when the solenoid reaches the end of its stroke. The present invention relates to the presentation of a device which makes it possible to cause the movement load to move a predetermined distance during each operation.

   According to the invention, there is presented a mechanism intended to move a member driven by successive angular steps in response to a driving member driven by a reciprocating angular movement, and comprising a transmission in one direction between these members, and a device for stop for the driven member and caused to operate near a limit of the movement of the drive member, whereby the driven member is moved a predetermined distance.

   The invention also comprises a mechanism intended to move a member driven by successive angular steps from a driving member driven by a reciprocating angular movement, and comprising a transmission in one direction between these members, and a stop device for the driven member, -activated from the drive member and caused to operate near a limit of movement of the drive member, whereby the driven member is moved a predetermined distance.

   Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent on reading the following description, given by way of example, of an embodiment of the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a rotary solenoid, the mechanism embodying the present invention, and a rotary switch constituting a load, the mechanism being in the normal rest position.

   Fig. 2 shows the assembly seen from the end where the rotating solenoid is located, this end being referred to, for convenience, as the end or the rear end.

   Fig. 3 is a view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1.

   Figo 4 is an end view from the load shaft, the

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 load formed by the switch being removed from the figure.

   Figures 5 and 6 show details of the ratchet assembly.

   Fig. 7 is an expanding view of the various parts constituting the construction shown in FIG. 1, with the contiguous piece of line A-A superimposed on line A'-A 'to provide a single expanding view of the various pieces. Any rotary solenoid can be employed in connection with the present invention, the only requirement being that the rotary solenoid has a predetermined fixed angle of rotary motion. As shown in the drawings, the rotary solenoid, generally indicated by numeral 10, has a rotary plate 11 attached to the shaft 12, extending through the rotary solenoid. The rotary solenoid shown here is more fully disclosed in the diagram. British Patent No. 6020812 mentioned above.

   The rotary plate 11 comprises a certain number (here, three), of curved hollows generally indicated by the reference 14, these hollows varying in depth along the length of the hollow in one direction; Suitable ball bearings 15 operate in these hollows, each of these ball bearings cooperating with a hollow in the fixed position of the solenoid. As shown in figo 2, the rotary plate 11 rotates clockwise during a driving stroke, the displacement being limited to a particular angle, a suitable device being provided to return the rotary plate and the shaft towards. the starting position when the solenoid stops being energized.

   As disclosed more fully in the patent, the rotating plate 11 moves, during the driving stroke, towards the housing 10, this forward movement causing the shaft 12 not only to rotate, but also to be moved longitudinally over a distance. limited, so that the points of the plate 11 move in helices.

   The solenoid 10 carries at its front end a mounting plate 17, this plate having a suitable opening 18 and carrying studs 19 and 20. In the opening 18, the end of the shaft 12 carries a coupling plate 22. having erect fingers 23 and 24. The finger 23 is longer than 24 and the two fingers are arranged at diametrically opposed points on the coupling plate
A wire spring 26 rests on the plate 17; one end 27 of the spring 26 is looped around the stud 19 and the other end 28 of the spring is looped around the finger 23. As shown in FIG.

  2, the coupling plate 22 is caused to rotate counterclockwise during a driving stroke of the armature and this causes the finger 23 to pull on the wire spring 260
Sleeves 30 and 31 are arranged on the studs 19 and 20, each of these sleeves comprising annular ribs 32 and 33.

   The ribs 32 and 33 are spaced a sufficient distance from the sleeve ends so that, when the sleeves are disposed on the studs, the curved end 27 of the spring and the spring body 26 can rest on the outside of the sleeve. without being linked. It is understood that the sleeves 30 and 31 do not cover the entire length of the studs 19 and 20, but leave the threaded bolt parts exposed.

   A tapered coil spring 35 rests on the coupling plate 22 and serves to take up axial movement of the solenoid shaft during operation.

   An actuating ratchet plate 37 rests loosely on the coil spring 35 and consists of a generally circular disc having notched sides 38 and 39 provided to accommodate the fingers 23 and 24 of the coupling plate. The actuating ratchet 37 has a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 opening 40 arranged in the center to let freely pass a tree which will be indicated later. The actuating ratchet disc 37 has on its upper face a series of ratchet teeth 42, these teeth being spaced at regular angular intervals around the central passage opening 40 of the disc.

   The ratchet teeth are shaped such that, in the construction shown in the drawings, the teeth therein have surfaces before engaging for mating in the direction of rotation of the ratchet disc when the solenoid is actuated. rotary moves in response to the excitation of the solenoid winding. The lower end 43 of a shaft 44 passes through the opening 40 of the ratchet disc 37.

   The shaft 44 has at least one part 45 which is flattened so that members having corresponding, non-circular openings can be fixed without turning on the shaft.

   The ratchet assembly 48 is disposed around the shaft 44 and is secured therein for rotation. The assembly 48 consists of a disc-shaped portion 49 having driven ratchet teeth 50, FIG. 5, on the lower face and teeth 52 on the upper face. The assembly can be suitably formed by riveting or permanently attaching a disc, stamped to form teeth 52, to disc 49, the latter having ratchet teeth 50 suitably formed thereon. It is preferable that the ratchet assembly 48 is permanently attached to the shaft 44, so that the ratchet assembly not only rotates with the shaft, but is also rigidly attached to the one so as to immobilize it in the shaft. the axial direction of the shaft.

   Above the teeth 52 is a cam 54 having a pivot opening 55, a lug 56 and a cam slot 57. The cam 54 is mounted on the stud 19 above the corresponding sleeve, the opening 55 being disposed. on the stud. The finger 23 is passed through the slot 57, while the lug 56, during the oscillation of the cam, is moved so as to put it in the path of the teeth 52 or to move it away.

   Above the disc 52 is a washer 58 having substantially the same thickness as the cam 54 and a support plate 60. The support plate 60 has an opening 61 for freely passing the shaft 44. The support plate 60 also has openings 62 and 63 corresponding to the threaded ends of the studs 19 and 20. Suitable nuts 64 are provided to secure the support plate 60 in position. The support plate 60 also carries switch support studs 65 and 66, these studs being attached to and extending upwardly from the support plate. The support plate 60 is rigidly fixed relative to the solenoid and the plate remains clear of the shaft 44 so that the latter can rotate freely.

   Above the support plate 60 is the contact displacement plate 67 having an opening 68 corresponding to the opening 61, this opening 68 also leaving free passage for the shaft 44. An eyelet 70 is provided for attach the contact displacement plate 67 to the switch support plate 60 and to hold these two plates squarely with each other while allowing the contact displacement plate to rotate relative to the support plate 60.

   Rivets 69 are provided on the contact displacement plate 67 to provide raised points of friction reduction.

   The contact displacement plate 67 has a finger 72 at one end and spaced fingers 73 and 74 at the other end, the two spaced fingers 73 and 74 forming a lost motion device. The contact displacement plate 67 is mounted above the support plate 60 so that the spaced fingers 73 and 74 are disposed on opposite sides of the finger 23 of the coupling plate.

   A spring clamp 76 is disposed above the

 contact displacement 67, has an opening 77 intended to allow the shaft 44 to pass freely and has openings 78 and 79 through which the studs 65-and 66 can pass. On the studs 65 and 66 and above the flange - Spring 76 are arranged sleeves 80 and washers 81 for carrying the. fixed part of the load using studs 65 and ¯66. As shown here, the load includes a rotary switch assembly. An insulating disc 83 is screwed onto the studs 65 and 66 and carries, at diametrically opposed points, movable contacts 84 cooperating with fixed contacts 85.

   The movable contacts are arranged so that the finger portions 72 and 73 of the contact displacement plate 67 open or close, as the case may be, the movable contacts 84 when the solenoid has moved to a predetermined point of its motion. operating route. In practice, the movable contacts are opened when the rotary solenoid has reached or approached the end of its stroke, the movable contacts opening the rotary solenoid circuit so that the rotary solenoid can return to its normal position. Suitable spring clips 87 are carried by the insulating disc 83, the spring clips being connected to the stationary and movable contacts so as to connect these and those to the desired components of the circuits.

   One or more rotary switch sections, generally indicated by the reference numeral 90, are spaced from the insulating disc 83; these switch sections are well known and come in various shapes. An example of a switch section that can be used is that disclosed and claimed in U.S. Patent 2,186,943 issued Jan. 16, 1940. Any number of switch sections in neighboring parallel sections can be used. being separated by suitable spacer sleeves passed over studs 65 and 66.

   It is understood that the rotor of a switch section generally has a non-circular opening for rotatably engaging the shaft 44, while allowing the rotor of the switch section to float relative to the stator. A flange 93 is disposed above the rotor of the last switch section, in the event that more than one switch section is used, and has openings for freely passing the shaft 44 and for being used. passed over studs 65 and 66. Flange 93 is made of smooth metal and separates the switch rotor sections with a ratchet mechanism.

   A ratchet plate 95 is disposed above the flange 93 and has an opening 96 shaped to relatively secure the plate 95 to the shaft 44. The ratchet plate 95 has ratchet teeth 97 disposed around its portion. peripheral. Above the ratchet plate 95 is a spring member 98 having an opening 99 intended to allow the shaft 44 to pass freely and having parts drilled with holes 100 for passage over the studs 65 and 66. Transversely with respect to the shaft 44. at the support line of the ratchet plate 98 are wing portions 102 and 103 having ratchet teeth 104- and 105 respectively. These teeth are arranged so as to cooperate with the ratchet teeth 97 of the plate.

   Spacer sleeves and suitable nuts are provided to engage the threaded ends of studs 65 and 66 to bolt the various parts together.

   In the construction shown, and simply by way of example, the rotary solenoid can have an angular path of just over 30 degrees, for example 35 degrees. The ratchet plate 37 has six evenly spaced teeth, forming a 60 degree angle between neighboring teeth. The following ratchet teeth 50 on the underside of the feed-in assembly 48 are four in number, so that a 30 degree ratchet advance is achieved. The additional travel of the rotary solenoid is performed to ensure the play of the ratchet. The teeth 52 are 52 in number and are spaced 30 degrees apart.

   The ratchet cam 54 has a slit shape such that the elongated finger 23 moves the ratchet cam

 from a normal position where the lug 56 moves away from the teeth 52 to a position where the lug 56 engages a tooth when the rotary solenoid has reached the end of its driving stroke. The contact actuator plate 67 is proportioned so that the finger 23, which is long enough to reach through the slot 57 the region between the fingers 73 and 74, actuates the contact displacement fingers. to open and close the spring contacts. The rotary switch section is constructed so that 30 degree movement of the rotor is sufficient to move the switch section from one position to another.

   The indicating device, consisting of the ratchet plate 95, and the ratchet teeth 104 and 105 cooperate to allow the 30 degree movement of the switch.

   When the rotary solenoid reaches the end of its driving stroke, cam 54 engages teeth and prevents shaft 44 from overshooting the limit in the direction of solenoid travel. By adjusting the times when contacts 84 and 85 open with respect to the end of travel of the rotary solenoid, it is possible to use the inertia of the load to complete the last part of the movement of the rotary solenoid. , after which the rotary solenoid returns freely to the normal position.

  The load only moves through a predetermined angle and remains in the preset position until the next driving stroke. It is understood that the above-mentioned angular displacements are simply exemplary and that in practice, any desired angles can be obtained, these angles depending on the construction of the rotary solenoid and on that of the various ratchets and on the nature of the load. It is also possible to have loads other than rotary switches.

   It should be observed that the work is done by the rotary solenoid during its driving stroke and that the spring return of the rotary solenoid does not perform any work on the load. It is however possible to reverse the ratchet device so that the driving stroke of the rotary solenoid stores some energy in the spring, after which the spring operates to move a load by a predetermined angle,
The ratchets intended to actuate the load in one direction and to prevent reverse movement of the load may be replaced by another transmission device in one direction only. A one-way transmission is disposed between the rotary solenoid or other driving device and the load. Another one-way transmission is arranged between the load and any fixed point.

   The two one-way transmissions are arranged in opposite directions, so that when the first one-way transmission is in gear, the other one-way transmission is coasting.

   The second transmission in one direction, interposed between the shaft and some fixed point, can be omitted in the case where the load has sufficient friction so that the reverse movement of the shaft cannot take place. It is also possible to substitute the ordinary indicating device for the second one-way transmission; such an indicator device generally exhibits sufficient friction to practically eliminate the reverse movement of the shaft.

   The described construction is particularly useful in cases where the actuation voltage of the solenoid can vary between far limits, which causes the effect of the solenoid to vary.
