Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Suivant la présente invention, les roues pleines sont fabriquées à partir de   barres   plutôt que de tôles, par plusieurs opérations représentées sur les dessins annexés dans lesquels la figure 1 est une élévation de côté d'une hélice ou vis d'Ar-   chimède   utilisée pour mettre le présent procédé à exécution; la figure 2 est une élévation de côté d'une partie de cette vis; la figure 3 est une vue en bout du segment représenté sur la figare 2; la figure   4   est une vue en plan partielle de l'ébauche conique formée à partir du segment   représenta   sur la figure 3; la figure 5 est une coupe transversale de l'ébauche conique de la figure   4;   la figure   6   est une coupe transversale de la roue pleine après sa formation;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   This invention relates to automotive wheels and its main object is to provide a unique and improved process for the manufacture of solid wheels for trucks, buses, cars and other automotive vehicles.

   The general aim of the invention is to provide a manufacturing process making it possible to produce wheels better than those obtained with the processes in use to date while achieving this result at a price appreciably lower than that of the conventional processes. .

   An object of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing solid wheels for automobiles which almost completely eliminates the high percentage of scrap metal necessarily resulting from conventional processes and thus achieves a sharp reduction in the cost of the material.

   Another object of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing solid wheels for automobiles in which the tapered cross section which is required for certain types of wheels can be imparted to the metal by a rolling operation. continuous before cutting the metal into blanks of separate wheels which means that the process not only provides a rare saving in labor but also very well suited by its nature to automatically operating machines which save labor, this which makes practical the process of mass production of solid wheels in a continuous automatic process.

   Still another object of the invention is to provide a method of manufacturing solid wheels for automobiles in which the outer edges of the wheel disc or web and the inner edges of the conventional central opening can be formed by rolling operations. rather than by any cutting, punching, trimming, milling or mandrelling, so that basic manufacturing processes lower those smooth, uniformly rounded edges free of harmful burrs or sharp edges.

   Another important object of the invention is to provide a unique process for the manufacture of solid wheels in which the deformation of the metal caused by the various winding, rolling, forming and forming operations to which the steel is subjected. , is maintained well below the elastic limit thereof. As a result, the entire manufacturing process can be done by cold working the metal without resorting to annealing, standardization or other heat treatments.

  In addition, the manufacturing operations are such that the finished wheel is strengthened and improved by the moderate cold work that the metal from which the wheel is made undergoes in the course of manufacture.

   As an introduction to the description of the invention, it may be relevant to point out that in the present state of the automobile industry in the United States, there is still an equal demand for millions of truck wheels. per year, not to mention the ever increasing demands for car wheels and the wheels of other vehicles. But notwithstanding the enormous proportions that this industry has reached, the processes used to date in the industry to manufacture these wheels have caused a very great waste of material and the reasons are inherent in the manufacturing processes used until now. now.

   In the process usually used up to now, the discs or webs of wheels are made from flat sheets. This necessarily results in a very large percentage of scrap because a sheet of the approximate width required is first cut into squares, then cut to give general octagonal shapes and again trimmed at the periphery after the metal has passed through the rolling mill to give the disc the desired tapered cross section. The relatively large stamped hub opening in each disc produces yet another waste of material.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   The present manufacturing process provides a way to manufacture solid wheels with a central opening of any diameter conventionally required for automobiles without producing any scrap and thus without wasting any metal. In addition, by virtue of the present manufacturing process, these discs or wheel webs can advantageously be given any desired contour and with all the specifications required with regard to the reduction in thickness of the web, etc. In fact, the only waste material from manufacturing complete wheels according to the present invention is metal lost by punching mounting bolt holes or access holes which might be stamped after the disc is completed.

   In accordance with the present invention, solid wheels are made from bars rather than sheet metal, by several operations shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a propeller or Archemedes screw used for carry out the present process; Figure 2 is a side elevation of part of this screw; Figure 3 is an end view of the segment shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a partial plan view of the conical blank formed from the segment shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a cross section of the conical blank of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a cross section of the solid wheel after its formation;

   Figure 7 is a plan view of the solid wheel after final stamping and Figures 8 and 9 are partial sectional details showing two shapes of solid wheels having the characteristic outline of truck wheels and car wheels, respectively .

   A relatively long steel bar is first subjected to a cold rolling operation which winds it on itself field into a continuous helix or multi-turn Archimedean screw 10. The metal strip 11 is preferably rolled along a tapering cross section, the inner edge 12 of which is substantially thicker than the outer edge 13.
The second operation of the process consists in cutting this heel into several segments 14 from which the blanks of the various wheel discs are formed.

   In the preferred form of the invention, these segments 14 do not have a complete convolution of the helical strip 11 but are slightly less than one convolution so that the two ends 15 and 16 of the strip normally form a certain angle between they follow the axis of the propeller (figure 3) and they are also spaced apart longitudinally as shown in figure 2.

   The propeller segments 14 are then transformed into individual wheel blanks 18 by forcing the two end edges 15 and 16 longitudinally towards each other along the axis 17 of the segment and by rotating them simultaneously with respect to each other. to the other to bring them into end-to-end contact as shown in FIG. 4. A typical segment comprising about 300 of wound tape and having the relative proportions shown in FIG. 3, takes, after the edges 15 and 15 end together. end, a slightly conical shape as shown in Figure 5.

  Edges 15 and 16 are then welded together and the weld barbs are removed. The mating edges 15 and 16 can be welded together along their entire length, if desired, although if access holes are to be drilled later in the wheel, it suffices to make a short

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 outer weld 19 and a short inner weld 20 as shown in Figure 4.

   The conical blanks of decreasing thickness 18 of the figure
5 are then stamped to give them the desired contour, preferably by an operation to flatten a central portion of the blank to form a circular mounting flange 21 immediately surrounding the opening for the hub 22 and to stretch a flange. 23 narrow and generally cylindrical bearing the rim on the outer peripheral edge of the wheel disc.

  During this operation, the intermediate part 24 of the disc of decreasing thickness is curved in two planes so as to give the wheel the maximum resistance and rigidity.

   The data of the present invention are applicable both to the wheels of trucks and trailers 25 using wheel discs 26 of general outline shown in Figure 8 and to the wheels 27 of general appearance shown in Figure 9, for which a disc 28 of more characteristic shape used in current motor cars is used. In either case, the present invention provides an extremely economical means of making a solid wheel having the required contour without wasting metal and facilitates the production of a disc having any desired shrinkage characteristic. thickness or other variations in thickness of the cross-section.

   For the manufacture of a wheel intended for a motor car, the only operations necessary to complete the wheel are the mounting of the rim and the punching of the bolt holes 29 in the central mounting flange 21, but if desired access holes 30, one of these holes can be obtained by making the line of separation between the ends 15 and 16 of the metal blank (figure 4) coincide in the space between the two short welds 19 and 20 .

   It follows from the foregoing that the unique manufacturing process described in this patent enables a solid wheel of any shape and variation in thickness to be produced without the significant waste of metal inherent in prior manufacturing processes and this process is by nature well suited to the application to high production machines controlled automatically. Since there is practically no waste resulting from the present process, the cost of the steel required for the production of a given number of wheels is reduced very substantially. At the same time, the necessary manufacturing operations are simplified by the elimination of all the repeated trimming, punching and mandrel operations in current use.

   The net result is that the new process described here makes it possible to produce solid wheels for automobiles much more economically than heretofore and yet the discs are stronger and of higher quality because of the shaping and forming processes described. here do not at any time exceed the elastic limit of the worked metal but only tend to perform moderate cold working of the metal sufficient to give it an extremely high degree of rigidity and strength, and at the same time produce solid wheels with exposed surfaces free from burrs or other sharp edges.
