<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a clamping device for logs comprising two claw holders which can be brought together or apart by sliding along a screw disposed vertically.
Its aim is to remedy certain practical difficulties which arise in known devices and which arise from the fact that the operation is based on the intervention of a rotating screw to be driven by one or more wedges engaging in one or more. grooves in the screw which results in rapid wear or destruction of the device.
With a view to remedying this drawback and obtaining a particularly robust construction, the device which is the subject of the invention is distinguished in that the screw does not receive any rotational movement and in that the lower claw holder is wedged on. the screw, for example by keying, while the lowering and raising movements of the upper claw holder are produced by a device forming a nut moving along the screw without the latter turning in such a way that when the upper claw has entered the log, the screw moves upwards, bringing the lower claw holder with it.
The invention also relates to simple design means for allowing advance and retreat of the claws and comprising that the frame carries a rack with which a sector controlled by a hand lever or a lever engages. other mechanical or electrical component.
In the accompanying drawings the details of construction are given only as examples.
Figure I is an elevational view relating to an apparatus according to the invention provided with a hand control for the movement of the claw holders and this apparatus is completed by a device for advancing or retracting the claws it being understood that this The latter device can also be applied to a clamping device designed in another way.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the line II-II in Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are explanatory views of the operation,
FIG. 5 is an elevational view showing an apparatus in which the control of the sliding movement of the claw holders takes place by an electric motor.
The device which is the subject of the invention comprises a screw 1 to the lower part of which is fixed, for example by a key 2, a support 3 for a claw 4. This support 3 forming a claw holder is held down by a shoulder. 5 provided at the end of the screw and can slide in a frame 6 comprising in the example shown a bottom plate 7 and two slides 8 (FIG. 2) between which the claw holder 3 moves.
At the upper part of the screw is provided a part 9 - 10 constituting a nut and formed of a sleeve 9 integral with a gear 10 engaged with a pinion II wedged on an axis 12 further carrying a handwheel 13 of control. .
The assembly 9 - 12 is located in a housing 14 which also surrounds the pinion II and which has a sleeve 15 mounted concentrically to the sleeve 9 and serving as a support (claw holder) for an upper claw 16.
The upper claw holder 15-16 is also guided by the frame 6 and slides in the guides 8.
Between the gear 10 and the sleeve 15 is provided a ball stop 17 and down the latter carries another ball stop 26 under which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the is an adjusting nut 19, screwed on the nut 9.
As can easily be understood, when one acts on the flywheel 13, the axis 12 and the pinion II are set in rotation and the latter drives the nut 9 - the which begins to descend along the screw 1 (which does not not rotate) by involving in this sliding movement the claw holder 16, the housing 14 - 15, as well as the shaft 12 and the flywheel 13.
When the upper claw 16 has penetrated somewhat into the log G (fig. 3), the resistance to the descent of this claw in front is greater than the weight of the claw holder 3 and claw 4 assembly.
If we continue to operate the steering wheel 13, the screw 1 then begins to move towards it, up under the control of the nut 10, bringing with it this assembly 3-4 which, by going up, occupies the position shown in Figure 4 where the claw 4 in turn enters the log.
The log is then suitably clamped by claws 4 and 16.
To loosen the log by releasing the claws, the handwheel 13 is rotated in the opposite direction and the various movements described above are reproduced in reverse order, that is to say that: a) screw 1 first moves down into 1-nut 9 and the assembly 3-4 resumes the position of FIG. 3; b) the assembly 10-16 then moves upwards so as to reoccupy the position of FIG. 1.
In the series sawing of logs of small diameters, it is possible to provide on the slides 6, an adjustable stop limiting the raising of the claw holder 16 and the subsequent descent of the latter in order to reduce the duration of the operation.
FIG. 5 relates to an alternative embodiment in which the various movements are controlled by an electric motor shown at 18 and the shaft of which, via a belt 19 or any other means, controls a shaft 20 which s' extends parallel to the screw 1 and which turns at its lower end in a slider 21.
This shaft 20 carries a helical pinion 22 with a splined hub engaged with the helical gear 10 forming a nut on the screw 1 and integral with the sleeve 9.
It would obviously also be possible to provide corner gables.
The motor therefore rotates.! - 'splined shaft 20 which drives pinion 22 which rotates nut 9-10.
As in the case of Figure 1, this nut moves along the screw 1 and drives with it the claw 16 and the housing 14-15 while the pinion 22 which is also contained in this housing moves along the shaft 20 like a walkman.
On the shaft 20, it is possible to provide a tightening torque limiter or a release with or without a magnetic brake automatically stopping the motor when the claws are fully tightened.
An apparatus as described can be completed by a device of simple design by which the frame 6 can be moved laterally and for this purpose, in accordance with the invention, a horizontal rack 23 integral with the frame and with which is engaged can be provided. a sector 24 controlled by a hand lever 25 or any other mechanical or electrical device.
A means is thus available for moving the hooks 4 and 16 forward or backward and to adjust their position relative to the log.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This device for moving the frame could be applied to a sleeve in which the clamping device is made in a different way, for example with a rotating screw.
The invention also extends to such an application.
