La figure 1 est une vue en plan et en coupe d'un dispositif selon l'invention et adaptable extérieurement à un appareil photographi- que comportant un seul objectif;
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a device for photographic reproduction in relief.
Many means have been proposed heretofore to give the photographic illusion of relief. In particular, it is well known to produce a stereoscopic effect by means of two photographic views giving two juxtaposed images or: superimposed with a slight offset, corresponding, one, to a view of the right eye, the other, seen from the left eye, and producing the illusion of relief by being observed simultaneously by means of a binocular stereoscope, when they are juxtaposed, or, when they are superimposed with offset, at the using glasses, colored or polarized lenses in a different way.
The subject of the invention is a device based on the aforesaid method, of simple design, economical production and applicable both to the taking of photographic views and to the optical reproduction thereof.
The device according to the invention is essentially characterized in that it comprises, in substance, a first pair of perpendicular mirrors, separated by a distance corresponding approximately to the distance between the eyes, and of which the reflecting face is directed towards an image by forming an angle with a frontal plane, and a second pair of perpendicular mirrors, respectively oriented towards the mirrors of the first pair and arranged at an equal distance from the latter and side $ to form, in cross section, an equilateral angle.
Other details and features will emerge more clearly from non-limiting examples of forms of application of the invention, the specific description of which is given below with reference to the attached schematic drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view in section of a device according to the invention and adaptable externally to a camera comprising a single lens;
@
FIG. 2 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1 of a dual-lens camera and internally comprising a device according to the invention; and FIG. 3 is a view similar to the previous ones of an apparatus for projecting photographic views in relief with a single lens and internally comprising a device according to the invention.
The device 1 shown in FIG. 1 allows stereoscopic photographic views to be taken by means of a camera 2, of the usual type, comprising a single lens 3.
The device 1 is essentially formed of a plate 4, for example, of sheet metal, the side edges 5 and 6 of which correspond respectively to the right and to the left of the user and are bent at a suitable angle with respect to a bottom 7. Against the side edges 5 and 6 are fixed mirrors 8 and 8 ', referred to here as exterior mirrors. Centrally, the bottom 7 has a circular opening 9 facing the objective 3. Obliquely to the exterior mirrors 8 and 8' are arranged two interior mirrors 10 and 10 'joined by one of their sides 11 and 11', to form between them an angle, of suitable size, the apex 12 of which coincides with the axis passing through the center of the circular opening 9 .
The interior mirrors 10 and 10 'thus form a prism of triangular section 13 made integral with the plate 4 by any suitable means, known and not shown.
The angle formed between them, on the one hand, the mirrors 8, and 10, on the other hand, the mirrors 8 'and 10' is such that the same image to be photographed is simultaneously reflected in A and A ', in the exterior mirrors
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
8 and 8 ', then is reflected, in B and B', on the interior mirrors 10 and 10 ', and finally, with the intervention of the objective 3, is returned, to the points C and C', on a blank photographic plate 14 placed in the apparatus 2.
By means of the device 1 of FIG. 1, the same image gives. on the sensitive plate 14 two photographic reproductions C and C 'juxtaposed along an X-Y plane. The exterior mirrors 8 and 8 'corresponding respectively to a right eye view and to a left view, it follows that the photographic images 0 and C' show two views respectively of the right eye and of the left eye. Consequently, the images C and C 'being reproduced, by the usual photographic methods, on a positive print placed in a binocular stereoscope of known type, a single vision and in relief of the photographed image is obtained.
Since the tilt of the outer mirrors 8 and 8 'and the inner mirrors 10 and 10' produces a distortion of the reflected image, the mirrors of at least one of the pairs 8-8 'and 10-10' exhibit a convexity of suitable curvature along an axis perpendicular to the horizontal plane of the shot. Advantageously, the radius of curvature of the convex mirrors is progressive towards the bottom 7, that is to say towards the objective 3, such that, in the direction considered, the mirrors in question have a substantially flat face.
In the case where the device 1 is intended to be mounted on cameras of any format, it is necessary that the angle of inclination of the mirrors 8 and 8 'and / or of the interior mirrors 10 and 10' can be modified, taking into account the characteristics of the considered camera. Advantageously, the aforesaid mirrors, exterior and / or interior, are mounted, by known means and not shown, so as to be of adjustable angular position.
Externally at the circular opening 9 and at the bottom 7, the device 1 comprises a nozzle 15 allowing it to be mounted on the objective 3 of the device 2.
The device 1 shown in FIG. 1 is especially suitable for cameras of format 6 x links these directly giving two views C and C 'shifted normally for stereoscopic examination. In cameras of 6 x 9 format, for example, the photos obtained must be shifted from one another to be usable in conventional stereoscopes.
It is understood that the device according to the invention is applicable both to cinematographic cameras and to photographic cameras. When it comes to devices using small format films, it is not advantageous for two stereoscopic images to be juxtaposed on the sensitive film: it is preferable to superimpose them with a slight offset.
Fig 2 represents one form of application of the device according to the invention in a photographic apparatus using small format films. The camera 16 comprises two objectives 17 and 17 ', one being provided with a transparent screen tinted in red 18, the other with a similar screen tinted in green 18', for example. The photographic film 19 is sensitive, for example, to red light or green light. In the apparatus 16, the exterior mirrors 8 and 8 'are arranged angularly facing the objectives 17 and 17', on either side of the film 19. As for the interior mirrors 10 and 10 'oriented towards the respective exterior mirrors , they are between objectives 17 and 17 '.
In the device 16, as in the device 1, the image, at
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the intervention of the objectives 17 and 17 ', is reflected simultaneously on the respective mirrors 8 and 8', at points A and A ', then reflected on the interior mirrors 10 and 10', at points B and B ', and finally projected on film 19 in two views C and C 'which are slightly offset. Thus, a photographic image is obtained presenting two images, one seen by the right lens 17, the other seen by the left lens 17 ', which are superimposed with a slight offset. The illusion of relief is obtained by examining the aforementioned image by means of a stereoscope comprising two eyepieces each provided with a transparent screen colored respectively in red and in green, or of different polarization.
From the embodiment of apparatus 16 a corresponding stereoscope could be derived. In the latter, the photographic cliché would replace the film 19, and, the latter being illuminated from behind, 20, the light ray @ would pass respectively from
C and C 'in B and B', then in A and A 'on the external mirrors 8 and 8', where the two reflected images being observed simultaneously by eyepieces in place of the objectives 17 and 17 ', would give the illusion of a single raised image.
In the photographic apparatus 16, it is no longer necessary to provide for the variable angular adjustment of the mirrors, they are permanently fixed, said apparatus being specially designed for a determined format.
It is understood that, in the apparatus of FIG. 2, as in the device of fig 1 ', and, in general, in any application of the invention, the mirrors 8 and 8' or the mirrors 10 and 10 'have a convexity similar to that mentioned above .
The stereoscopic projection of suitable photographic images can also be carried out using the device according to the invention.
Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of an apparatus intended to project two images, obtained initially juxtaposed, for example using the device for freezing it on a screen, in such a way that the two images are superimposed with a slight offset so that their observation, using glasses with polarized or differently tinted lenses, provides the illusion of relief.
In the projector 21 (fig. 3), two images C and C ', reproduced on a photographic plate, offset with respect to each other and arranged on either side of the interior mirrors 10 and 10', illuminated. by respective lamps 22 and 22 ', reflected on the exterior mirrors 8 and 8', at points B and B ', reflected on the interior mirrors 10 and 10' which, from points A and A ', project them, at the intervention of an objective 23, on a screen 24, at points D and D ', in such a way that the images C and C' are superimposed there with a slight offset.
It is understood that the invention is not limited only to the embodiments described above and shown in the appended drawings, and that, within the scope thereof, many variant embodiments are possible, provided that 'they are not in contradiction with any of the characteristics mentioned in the subsequent claims.
