L'invention se propose en conséquence de réaliser: un dispositif de protection contre les éruptions qui soit de forme plus ramassée a tous les points de vue que les dispositifs anté - rieurs et remplisse sensiblement la même'fonction, ui ne comporte pas d'éléments en saillie ni de conduites susceptibles d'être endommagés par le mouvement de la lourde installation dans l'espace entourant le dispositif; dont les mécanismes de commande sont beaucoup plus simples que ceux des dispositifs antérieurs;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

The present invention relates to a device for protecting against blowouts from wells during drilling, which is intended mainly to be fixed to the upper end of the casing of a well so as to close or seal the delimited annular space. between the well casing, or one of the large diameter pipes in the well, and the well casing or one of the other smaller diameter pipes in the well.
When the well does not contain a pipe of small diameter passing through the protection device, the latter comprises so-called secondary pistons which close the opening of the protection device through which the pipe could pass and consequently the opening of the well pipe on which the protection device is mounted.
Blowout protection devices are used primarily during the drilling of a well by the rotary drilling process, during which the rotary drilling pipe enters the well by passing through the open protection device. This device is thus ready to be closed around the drill pipe at any time when an eruption is about to occur, thus closing the annular space around the drill pipe or to close completely. the upper end of the well in the event that the well does not contain a drill pipe.
The device which is the subject of the invention is of the type which comprises opposed pistons which can approach or move away from the opening of the pipe passing through the protection device, so as to close or open said opening.
In general, the object of the invention is a protective device which is lighter, more compact in shape and safer, the pistons of which can be changed more easily and more rapidly than in previous forms of construction.
Devices of the aforementioned type have been in widespread use for several years in deep wells and have been perfected so as to achieve a high degree of perfection. The patent
United States of America, No. 2.387.106 of October 16, 1945, describes an example of one of the more modern and widespread forms of construction of such devices which have been successfully adopted to a large extent. in industry.
However, the protective devices in use up to now are quite large and bulky and occupy considerable vextical space because of their height; it was also considered useful to reduce the vertical space necessary for the installation of such a device, as well as its overall dimensions and its weight, without reducing the efficiency of its operation and its output. Likewise, earlier protective devices have been operated with pressurized fluid from suitable sources, but in order to get this fluid to the proper points of the device, it has been necessary in most cases to provide piping and large pipes to be connected in the space which surrounds the main body of the protection device.
Likewise, other elements of the prior devices protrude from various elements of the device and, together with the piping and the conduits, risk being damaged by impacts during the movement of the heavy installation or for any other reason.
The invention therefore proposes to provide: a device for protection against eruptions which is of a more compact form from all points of view than the previous devices and substantially fulfills the same function, which does not include any elements. protruding or conduits liable to be damaged by the movement of the heavy installation in the space surrounding the device; whose control mechanisms are much simpler than those of previous devices;
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a form of construction of the pushers of this device which allows the assembly of pushers to be changed more easily and quickly in order to adapt the device to different diameters of the pipes, to replace the worn elements, or to replace portions of pushers liable to close the whole of the opening of the protective device by others capable of closing the annular space around a pipe; - A set of tappets, the elements of which are subject to the greatest wear or have to be changed to switch from one diameter of pipe to another can be changed very easily without changing the set of tappets; a form of lifter construction which enables the entire packing or pipe guide to be changed without removing bolts or the like from the lifter.
To facilitate the description and understanding of the definitions, the terms "front" or "anterior" will be used to denote the portions of the pushers and guides which are closest to the opening of the pipe of the protective device, and the terms "rear" and "posterior" to designate the portions of these elements which are furthest from this opening. The terms "upper", "lower", "horizontal", "vertical", etc. designate the elements of the device arranged or located in these positions in service in the well.
These results, as well as others, are obtained according to the invention in a general manner by placing side by side and more or less in a horizontal position the groups of pistons and cylinders which operate and allow the tappets to be changed, in operating the tappets by two pistons of smaller diameter instead of one of larger diameter, by giving the tappets an oval shape in section with the major axis horizontal and by grouping all these elements in the form of a shaped set collected with a body and a head.
The channels for admission of the pressurized fluid to the various groups of pistons and cylinders of this assembly are formed in the head and in the body of the protection device so as to eliminate the protruding elements and conduits liable to be damaged by the exterior movement of the heavy installation. In this connection, the locking screw of the pusher, which generally exists in protective devices of the plunger type and serves to keep the plungers in the closed position, is mounted in the device according to the invention between the two. pusher cylinders and is protected in service by these two cylinders against any damage caused by the external movement of the heavy installation.
In addition, the entire installation is constructed in such a way that the pressurized fluid inlet control elements which serve to advance and retract the tappet in normal service of the protection device can be used. to move away, in the same manner and without additional pipes, the head relative to the body of the device in order to change the linings and the like of the pushrods.
The movement of the same control element therefore has the effect of bringing the pushers closer to the head and of causing the pressurized fluid to arrive in order to move the head which carries the pushbutton away from the body of the device, thus making accessible the elements of the pushbutton which must be dismantled and changed.
The pusher itself is also constructed by mating the wear-prone elements with the rest of the pusher, thus allowing them to come forward and backward with it when it is in its slideway, but keeping them. 'leaving free for the rest. These elements can be removed from the pusher assembly from bottom to top without having to remove bolts or the like of the pusher and without disassembling the other pusher parts of the protective device when the pusher
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
came out of its slide.
It is thus possible to disassemble ,, and easily replace the elements to be discarded without touching the rest of the pusher, thus reducing the weight to be handled and the manpower necessary for this operation to those necessary to disconnect. and coupling the elements of the pusher. Either way, the present form of construction allows a worker to change parts of the pushrods much more easily and quickly than in previous forms of construction.
A preferred embodiment will now be described, given by way of example, with the accompanying drawings in support, on which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an assembly of the protection device according to the invention, in which the pipes for admitting the pressurized fluid into the device are shown schematically.

Referring to the drawings, it can be seen that the protection device shown actually consists of two protection devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
superimposed.
In practice, one protection device is generally placed on top of another and they are coupled, but in this case, to obtain a more compact form of construction and not taking up as much space in height below. derricks during drilling operations, two of these devices were grouped together as a single assembly. The lower element of this set is designated by 10 in Figure 1 and the upper element by 12.
It must be understood that these two elements are of identical construction form, except that in practice the lower element generally, but not necessarily, comprises blind pushers or pushers capable of covering the entire space of the opening d. 'a pipe passing through the protection device, when the well does not contain a pipe, while the upper element 12 generally comprises pushers capable of surrounding a pipe passing through the device and of covering the annular space around the pipe.
To simplify the description, only one of these elements will be discussed.
The body of the protective device is pierced from top to bottom with an opening through which a pipe can pass and which is hereinafter referred to as the pipe opening 18. The body portion which surrounds the lower end of this opening is fixed to the head of a casing or the like, by means of rods penetrating into threaded holes 13 (FIG. 6). Likewise, other elements can be fixed at will to the upper end of this opening by means of rods penetrating into threaded holes 14. Ordinary packing washers can be housed in grooves 15 and 16 formed in the lower faces. and greater in the vicinity of the threaded holes 13 and 14, in any known manner.
The aforementioned pipe opening which passes vertically through the body of the protective device is designated 18. There is also generally provided a lateral outlet orifice 20 comprising an appropriate device for connecting a pipe and communicating with the opening 18 of the pipe at a point situated below the lower pushers of the lower element.
Two slides 22 which intersect and run laterally in opposite directions from the opening 18 of the pipe serve to guide the pushers, which may be blind pushers, generally designated 24, or pushers surrounding the pipe, designated generally by 26 (figure 6). These pushers are described in detail below and can come forward or backward, approaching and moving away from a position in which they cover the opening of the pipe passing through the body of the protection device and thus prevent circulation in the tube. opening of the pipe not containing a pipe, as for example by means of the blind pushers 24, or in the annular space delimited around the pipe, as for example by means of the pushers 26.
The pushers normally receive their forward and backward movement by means of pistons 28 movable in cylinders formed in the head which, during normal operation of the protection device, is rigidly and tightly fixed to the body of the device in the transverse direction of the outer ends of the slides.
The pistons 28 of the tappets are rigidly fixed to the ends of rods 29 which, for their part, are screwed or are joined in any other rigid manner to a support 30 for the tappets which constitutes the major part of the body of the tappet.
The aforementioned head consists of a cover 32 and an intermediate flange 34. The cover contains the cylinders 36 of the tappets which house the pistons 28 of the tappets and cooperate with them, and the open ends of the cylinders 36 are closed around the rods. 29 by the intermediate flange 34 which is fixed to the cover 32 by suitable devices such as cap screws 38. The holes of the intermediate flange 34 which
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
surrounding the rods 29 contain suitable gaskets 40, so that the cylinders 36 of the tappets are closed at their ends on the side of the rods around the rods 29, as well as at their opposite ends or on the side of the head.
A combination of pistons and double-acting cylinders is thus obtained which causes the forward and backward movement of the pushrods 26 in the direction in which the pressure is exerted on the pistons 28.
It will be noted that the pushers 26 and their slides 22 are oval in cross section and that their major axis is horizontal, which makes it possible to very significantly reduce the vertical dimension of the protection device with respect to circular pushers, while taking advantage of advantages which result from the elimination of flat bearing surfaces of angles or crevices in which sand, shale and other matter may accumulate, by preventing the correct functioning of the pushrods or by giving rise to a excessive wear. In addition, the pushrods are actuated by two pistons and cylinders instead of one, as has been said, and these pistons are separated from each other and lie substantially in the same plane. horizontal, which is roughly the same as that of the major axis of oval pushers.
The head formed by the cover 32 and the intermediate flange 34 fixed to each other by the cap screws 38 in the manner described above is fixed to the body of the protection device during its normal operation in a transverse position. the slideways 22 of the pushers and on their outer ends by box-head screws 42, four in number per head. It can be seen that the head is thus held rigidly with respect to the body of the protection device and that by causing the pressure of the fluid to act on the ends of the cylinders 36 alternately on the side of the head and on their ends on the side of the rod, the pushers 26 receive a forward movement and a backward movement in their respective slides 22.
It will also be noted that each of the supports 30 of the pushers comprises between the rods 29 a projecting portion 44 internally threaded and threaded so as to accommodate a locking screw 45, the threaded internal end of which penetrates into the threaded hole of the portion in projection 44 and the outer end of which is in the form of a smooth rod of non-circular section at its outer end so as to be able to place a key therein and to rotate it. This screw comprises between its threaded portion and its smooth portion a radial collar 47.
The cover 32 has a recess between the portions in which the cylinders 36 are formed, and the smooth portion of the aforementioned screw passes through a hole drilled in the cover and in this recess so that, although it is accessible from outside the cover, it is protected by the portion of the latter in which the cylinders 36 are formed.
It is easy to see that when the screw occupies the position of FIG. 6, it can come forward and backward with the pusher 26 without hampering this movement, but that it can serve to close the pusher 26 by hand, or well, when the pusher 26 occupies its closed position or forwards, the screw can be rotated by its non-circular portion until it comes out of the protruding portion of the pusher support and brings the collar 47 into contact with it. the inner surface of the hood. In 'this position, the pusher 26 is locked in its closed position and cannot come back.
Although, during normal operation of the protection device, the head formed by the cover and the intermediate flange attached thereto is rigidly and tightly fixed to the body of the device by the screws 42, it is also mounted on the body by a coupling allowing telescopic movement or idle movement and which, when the screws are loosened, allows the head to be moved away from the body of the protective device over a distance which is not appreciably less than the amplitude of the movement in front and behind the pusher 26.
The aforementioned telescopic coupling consists of two parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
which may be referred to as "head" pistons 50 and 52 sealingly sliding in head cylinders 54 and 56 formed in the cover 32 and whose axes are substantially in the same plane as the axes of the cylinders 36 and on each side. These pistons 50 and 52 are carried by respective piston rods 58 and 60 both hollow and passing through the intermediate flange 34 and screwing or fixing in any other rigid manner on the body of the device.
The ends of the cylinders 54 and 56 on the rod side are closed around the respective rods 58 and 60 by suitable gaskets 61 disposed in the intermediate flange 34, so that the assemblies formed by the pistons 50 and 52 and the cylinders 54 and 56 of the head are double-acting.
It can be seen that if the fluid under pressure is brought into the ends of the shank side of the cylinders, it tends to bring the head into close contact with the body of the device in the position of FIG. 5, but if the pressurized fluid enters the cylinders from the side of the head, it tends to move the head away from the body, and when the screws 42 are loosened this movement of the head. continues until it is stopped by the contact of the pistons 50 and 52 with the bottoms of the cylinders 54 and 56 which are carried by the intermediate flange 34.
This retracted position is shown in Figures 9 and 4 and it can be seen by referring to these figures that when the elements occupy this position, it is possible to remove by lifting them the elements which determine the wear and seizing of the plunger, operation which will be described in detail later.
If we consider more particularly the devices which cause the pressure of the fluid to act on the various sets of pistons and cylinders to actuate them at will, we see that with regard to the channels for the passage of the fluid in the body and in the head of the protection device, these elements are shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4.
For simplicity, the passage channels have been shown in these figures as being all in the same plane, although in reality the channels shown in the head are actually in the head and those shown in the body are actually in the body. , so that they are not necessarily in the planes in which they are represented but occupy in the head and in the body the most convenient positions from the point of view of the form of construction, these positions having no importance from the point of view of the principle of the invention.
It will be noted first of all that the body of the device comprises two fluid passage channels 62 and 64 each terminating in respective orifices 65 and 66 which allow them to be connected to an external pipe for the inlet of the pressurized fluid or of reception. of this fluid.
It will then be noted that the channel 62 of the body communicates with a channel 67 passing through the hollow rod 58, passing through the piston 50 and terminating in the end of the side of the cylinder head 54. A channel 68 starting from the end of the side of the cylinder head 54 Reverses the cover and the intermediate flange and communicates by connections 69 and 70 with the ends of the rod side of the cylinders 36 of the push rods, as well as by an extension. 71 with the end of the cylinder head side 36.
In this regard, the two ends of each section of the protection device are identical and it emerges from the description that if the pressurized fluid arrives through the orifice 65, its pressure is exerted on the ends of the side of the head of the cylinders 54 and 56 and has a tendency to move the head away from the body of the device, while it is exerted in time on the ends of the side of the rod of the cylinders 36 of the push rods causing the backward movement of the push rod 26 to that it comes into contact with the intermediate stop flange 34.
It can be seen that during the normal operation of the protection device, during which the head is fixed to the body by the fastening screws 42, the pressure exerted on the ends of the side of the head of the cylinders 54 and 56 does not cause the movement of the head relative to the body, but that by exerting itself on the cylinders 36 of the push rods it makes it come back
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the pusher 26 in the position of FIGS. 3 and 5, unless obviously the pusher is blocked in its anterior position by the screw 45, in which case no movement is caused by the pressure exerted in the manner described above -above.
However, if the fastening screws 42 are loosened, the pressure exerted in the manner described above has the effect of making the pushrod come back in contact with the intermediate flange, and further pushing away the head of the body until it occupies the position of Figures 4 and 9, in which portions of the pusher can be removed, as will be seen later.
It will be noted that the channel 65 of the body communicates with the hollow interior 74 of the rod 60. However, this hollow interior 74 does not open into the piston of the head 52, unlike the hollow interior 67 which opens into the piston. the piston of the head 50. On the contrary, the piston 52 is full and small channels 75 are formed between the interior 74 of the rod and the interior of the cylinder 5 on the side of the rod, so that the pressure in port 66 passes to cylinder 56 at the end of the rod side.
This end of cylinder 56 communicates via channels 76 and connections 77 and 78 with the ends of the cylinder head side.
36, and by an extension 79 of the channel 76 with the end of the side of the cylinder rod 54 '
It can therefore be seen that when the pressurized fluid arrives through the orifice 66, its pressure tends to be exerted on the ends of the rod side of the cylinders 54 and 56 so as to push the head into close contact with the cylinder. body, and to be exerted on the ends of the side of the head of the cylinders 36 so as to advance the pusher 26 in its closed position, During the normal operation of the protection device and while the head is fixed on the body through the attachment screws 42,
the pressure exerted by the fluid arriving through the orifice 66 has no other effect than to cause the pusher 26 to come forward into its closed position, but if the fastening screws have possibly been loosened previously and if the head has been brought away from the body (figures 4 and 9), the pressure of the fluid arriving through the orifices 66 has the effect of bringing the head closer to the body, thus allowing the fastening screws to be put back in place in this position and move the pusher into its closed posiLion.
FIG. 1 schematically indicates the external pipes bringing in the pressurized fluid so as to operate the protection device. It can be seen in this figure that the only conduits or external conduits which communicate directly with the orifices 65 and 66 are those which are designated by 80 and 81 and are the only ones which are required to operate the section or the upper element of the device. protection. These lines connect to a control valve 82 which controls all operation of the upper member of the protective device by selectively coming into either of its two positions.
In one of these positions, the valve communicates the line 80 with a pump 88 which sucks the fluid from a reservoir 90 and delivers it under pressure through the valve 82 and the line 80 into the orifice 65, giving the results described below. above, while the pipe 81 communicates through the valve 82 with an exhaust pipe 89 which empties into the reservoir 90 and allows the fluid which has operated in the respective cylinders to return to the reservoir.
In its other position, the valve 82 communicates the pipe 81 with the pump 88 to bring the pressurized fluid into the orifice 66 giving the results described above, while the pipe 80 communicates with the exhaust pipe 89 for allow the fluid released from the ends of the cylinders communicating with the orifice 65 to return to the reservoir 90.
The operation of the lower element of the protection device is also controlled by two lines 84 and 85 and a valve

86 which serves to make them communicate alternately with the pump 88 and with the exhaust pipe 89 respectively.
A more detailed description is given below of the construction form of the pushers, which is extremely advantageous in particular in combination with the protective device of the construction form described above.
As has already been said, each of the pushers has a body of oval section in a direction transverse to that of its forward and backward movement, so that its bulk in the vertical direction is as small as possible but that 'However, it has the advantage of not having flat surfaces or angles in which gravel and other matter would tend to accumulate. The major part of this body consists of a support 30 of the pusher, to which the control rods 29 of the pusher are rigidly coupled, as has already been described.
This pusher support is not intended to be dismantled under ordinary conditions and there is no need to dismantle it to replace the pusher seal of one dimension with a seal of another dimension, in order to mount a blind plunger covering the whole opening of the pipe, or to replace the pipe centering guide to adapt it to pipes of different diameters. As shown in Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10, the upper front portion of this support is notched so as to accommodate the pipe centering guide and the pusher gasket which, with the support, constitutes the complete pusher. The support comprises a shoulder 92 directed forward and on which the centering guide 93 of the pipe rests.
This guide has a circular arc shape, the interior curvature of which is chosen so as to fit on the pipe on which the protection device is to be mounted and the exterior curvature of which is chosen so as to fit in the provided recess. for housing the guide in the pusher support. The anterior ends of the guide 93 include extensions which form the actual guides of the pipe and which at one end 94 are adjacent to the upper surface of the guide and at the other end 95 are adjacent to the lower surface of the guide.
These extensions come in front of the front face of the pusher and are housed in corresponding recesses of a guide for centering the pipe identical to the other pusher, so that when the two pushers are in the closed position, these extensions are respectively superimposed. . The pipe centering guide is not attached to the bracket by bolts or other fasteners but has stud-shaped coupling members 96 which enter corresponding pin holes 97 drilled in the bracket, so that as long as the pipe guide is pressed from top to bottom against the shoulder 92 of the support, it cannot move relative to it.
The pusher gasket is part of an assembly which consists of the actual gasket 98 and upper and lower pusher segments 99 and 100 which are made of a rigid material such as steel, against the material. elastic flexible such as synthetic rubber which generally constitutes the lining itself. The gasket preferably consists of a molded part in the form of an endless strip arranged to form a sealing strip 101 on the front face of the pusher, a portion 102 directed backwards on each end of the front sealing strip 101. and a portion which curves upward and backward on the upper part of the pusher thereby forming a sealing strip 103 on the upper part of the pusher.
This element is preferably molded in one piece and forms an endless band of sealing material. The lining itself is completed by thrust plates 104 and 105 which fit into the respective upper and lower surfaces of the portion 101 of the elastic lining disposed on the front surface of the pusher. The thrust plates terminate a short distance from the posterior surface of this portion of the liner and their posterior surfaces press against
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the elastic packing, so that when they are pushed back they tend to push back between them the material which constitutes the packing.
The upper and front portion of each pusher is formed by the upper segment 100, while the base of each liner is formed by the lower segment 99. The shape of these two segments is chosen so as to pass them through the liner. opening formed by the endless trim member, to completely fill this opening, to limit the upper and lower surfaces of the front strip portion 101 of the trim member and to form a support for the posterior portion of this anterior band.
Likewise, the upper segment 100 forms a wall limiting the front surface of the curved strip 103 of the trim element and extending over the. upper part of the pous - evening, and the lower segment passes above this strip 103 so as to form a wall bounded by its inferior surface. After having assembled the upper and lower segments with each other and with respect to the packing element as shown, they are fixed to each other by cap screws 106 whose heads are countersunk into the outer surface of the upper segment and thread into appropriate tapped holes in the lower segment. Note that these cap screws are only used to secure the segments to each other and not to fix them on the rest of the pusher.
It can be seen in this connection that the support of the pusher comprises a substantially semi-circular rib or flange 107 directed upwards, and projecting just above the upper surface of the pipe centering guide when it is in place. in the support of the pusher, and which comprises a sent-circular recess behind this flange 1070 The lower segment 99 has a complementary shape and comprises a portion 108 in the form of a flange directed downwards, which is housed in the recess behind the flange 107, so that once the pusher packing assembly has been torn apart on the pusher support in the manner described above, this assembly acts as the guide for centering the pipe,
can move freely from bottom to top of the pusher support but is coupled with portions of the pusher support which prevent it from coming forward or backward with respect to this support. The support of the pusher also comprises a posterior portion 109 directed upwards and forming a posterior stop for the assembly of the lining and in particular of the lining element along the strip 103.
It can therefore be seen that when the pusher described above is in place in its slideway of the body of the protection device, the guide 93 for centering the pipe is held in place by the assembly of the pusher lining, which in turn does not cannot move up and away from the support due to its contact with the slide of the pusher, so that the entire pusher operates as a single piece. It will be noted in this connection that the shape of the slide of the pusher is chosen so as to surround the pusher and to rest against it over its entire outer periphery and over the entire length of these two elements, so that the plunger lining and the pipe guide are held in place on the support for the entire length of the path of the pusher in its slide.
On the other hand, when the pusher has come out of its slide under the action of the pistons 28 of the pusher and the pistons of the head 50 and 52, the fastening screws 42 being loosened, the pusher can be removed first. 'all of the pusher packing and, if desired, \) the pipe centering guide simply by lifting it. For this purpose and to facilitate the removal of the entire pusher packing, the upper segment 100 is drilled with 'a threaded hole 110 in which a lifting ring can be screwed.
The slideways of the pusher also closely surround the total periphery of the respective plungers when the latter occupy their position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
rearmost position in the slides, but forward of their posterior ends the lower surfaces of the slides have a flared portion 111 which extends in and downward from the lifters to prevent sand or debris from accumulating at the bottom. below the pushers and cooperates with the release notches 112 of the support of the pushbutton, assuming that the pressures on its anterior and posterior faces are substantially the led. The portion 101 of the trim strip and the portions extending back from it along the sides of the pusher are located above the major axis of the oval section of the pusher.
The pressures are thus better balanced on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the pushers in the closed position, due to the fact that the only force necessary for opening is the pressure of the well which is exerted on a surface substantially equal to the surface of the face. front of the pusher above the trim.
When the pusher operates in its slide, it can advance until it is in contact with the pipe and / or the other pusher opposite, and at this moment the packing is completely enclosed and the continuation of the movement of the pusher has the effect of pushing the thrust plates 104 and 105 into the enclosed space, thereby causing movement of the enclosed packing material and increasing the pressure therein so as to form a tight seal between all the surfaces in contact. These boundary surfaces are formed by the segments 99 and 100, the rear portion 109 of the pusher support, the pusher plates 104 and 105, the surrounding adjacent surface of the slide and the surface of the pipe or other pusher with which the face 101 is in contact.
The operation of the protection device described above appears to be easy to understand from the above description, but can be summarized in a few words as follows:
The protection device was mounted on the casing of a well in the manner described above, may be crossed by a drilling pipe or the like or not be crossed by any element. This is why the pushers of one of the elements of the protection device also comprise front surfaces which come into contact with the front face of the complementary pusher over the entire extent of these front faces so as to close the opening of the pipe when 'there is no pipe in the well.
This can be achieved by operating the valve 86 so as to cause the pump 88 to communicate with that of the lines 84 or 85 which terminates in the channel communicating with the ends of the head side of the cylinders 36. The fastening screws 42 being clamped on the body of this element of the protective device, the pistons and cylinders of the head do not work, while the pushers push the latter forward into the closed position. During this movement, the fluid flows through one or the other of the conduits 84 or 85, as the case may be, because the pistons 28 decrease the volume of the cylinders 36 on the side of their rods.
The operation is the same under the control of the valve 82 when the upper member of the protective device is traversed by a pipe.
If you wish to replace a worn plunger packing element or replace the pusher packing and the pipe guide to change the lifter and bring it into contact with a pipe of a different diameter, loosen the fastening screws. 42 of the head of the protection device and the valve 82 or 86 is operated so as to cause the pressurized fluid to flow into the ends of the head side of the cylinders of the head and into the ends of the rod side of the cylinders of the pushrods and to release the fluid from the other ends of these cylinders.
As a result, the tappets come back into contact with the intermediate flanges and rearward the head with the intermediate flanges, covers and tappets away from the body of the protective device until the upper surface of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
pusher is uncovered. Then .. if it is only a question of changing the assembly of the pusher gasket can screw a lifting ring in the threaded hole 110 and lift this assembly in one-piece form. You may or may not disassemble the pipe centering guide and reassemble it as desired.
We can then put in place a new set of packing and by operating the valves 82 or 86 which is suitable for reversing the direction of arrival of the pressurized fluid., The head comes into contact with the body and the pusher returns to its position. further forward above the pipe opening. The fastening screws 42 can then be tightened and the device is once again ready for use.
It can be seen that the device according to the invention makes it possible to achieve all the results and advantages which it has been proposed to achieve, that the shape of the push-buttons and the arrangement of the combinations of pistons and cylinders actuating the push-buttons allow to obtain a very compact form of construction, while retaining the advantages of the previous devices, that due to the presence of the pistons and the control cylinders of the head and the method of assembly of this tetas the pushers are easily accessible for the purpose of changing their parts, than because of the shape of construction of the pushers themselves,
the replacement of the elements is easier because of the reduction to a minimum of the elements to be dismantled and replaced and because there is no need to dismantle the fixing devices which assemble these elements together, than because of the arrangement of the elements. pipes bringing in the:
working fluid in the cylinders of the tappets and head cylinders and of their coupling mode, only one control valve is sufficient for each element of the protective device and that due to the arrangement of these pipes in the head and in the body of the device and of the locking screw arrangement between the cylinders and the head cavity, elements susceptible to damage by external influences are almost completely eliminated.
It can therefore be seen from the foregoing that the protection device according to the invention makes it possible to achieve all the results listed above and still offers other obvious advantages specific to the form of construction described.
Of course, the invention should not be considered as limited to the embodiment shown and described, which has been chosen only by way of example.
