<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a pivoting container and more particularly to a food container for a household refrigerator or "freezer". Although not limited to this use, the present invention is particularly well suited to vertical domestic coolers having access doors which pivot about vertically axis hinges.
More specifically, the invention relates to a food basket which is pivotally mounted to the access door trim of a vertical household cooler. The basket can perform a movement around a horizontal axis between a vertical storage position very close to the door fitting and a substantially horizontal access position which facilitates the placing or removing of food. or the basket.
Briefly, the invention comprises a food container, which may be a mesh basket, pivotally mounted, mounted by connecting rods on brackets attached to, and protruding from the interior face of the container. home cooler access door trim. The rods are arranged in a new way which allows that in their storage position, the baskets are close to the interior lining of the door of the cooler, without however touching it. The ropes are provided to hold the basket in the closed storage position using the force of gravity so that the basket cannot be inadvertently moved by slamming the door of the cooler.
Thus, the basket is actually maintained in a "locked position" despite the fact that the mechanism is entirely free from latches, latches or the like.
When the basket is lowered into its horizontal access position, it is supported firmly and firmly so that a relatively high weight of food can be supported and stored without substantial sagging of the construction.
Although the principles of the present invention can be applied to any type of food container, the preferred embodiment includes a mesh basket which has the advantage of making all the packages therein visible. preserved. This of course facilitates the use of the cooler and makes it possible to easily locate the particular food desired without having to examine the large number of other food packages.
In view of the above, it will be appreciated that the main object of the present invention is the creatium of an improved food container. More specifically, an object of the invention is the design of a pivoting basket intended to be attached to the access door of a refrigerator or a domestic cooler.
More specifically still, an object of the present invention is to provide a mesh basket which is pivotally mounted via hinge pins on brackets attached to the interior skin of a domestic cooler door in such a manner. that the center of gravity of the basket is raised above a neutral position during movement of the basket both towards the closed position adjacent to the door trim and towards a substantially access position horizontal at an angle of approximately 90 with the door trim. As a result, thanks to the force of gravity, the basket will remain in a closed position without the aid of latches or latches.

.: - ;. "In accordance with the present invention, space for food storage has also been provided on the interior trim 5 of the access door 2. On the upper door of the trim there is provided a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
dispenser 6 for canned fruit juices. The boxes must descend towards semi-circular racks 7 from which they can be easily removed, as required.
At the lower part of the door there is provided a fixed basket 8 which is accessible via its open upper part.
Between the racks 6 and the basket 8 there is provided a pair of pivoting mesh baskets 9 which are new. Each basket is provided with a handle 9a by means of which it can be moved away from the closed storage position, shown in FIG. 1, to be placed in an open access position making an angle with the door trim, shown in FIG. 2B. The specific details of the swivel basket can be seen with reference to fig. 5, which shows a pair of rigid supports 10 attached to the interior face of the liner 5.
Oh has rigidly attached to each end 11 of the basket 9 a fixed assembly rod 12 which is pivotally attached at its upper end, for example by means of a stud 13, to an articulated rod 14, of which the lower end is pivotally attached by a stud 15 to an associated support 10.
Attention is now drawn to FIGS. 2, 2A and 2B in which it can be observed that a guide pin 16 is rigidly attached to the lower end of the rod 12, which can come into sliding engagement with an inclined guide 17 provided in the lower part of the associated support 10 It can therefore be seen that the pivot pin 15 is fixed while the pivot pin 13 can move in a circular path around the stud 15 as a center, while the guide pin 16 can slide in a guide 17.
The pivoting movement of the basket can be understood entirely with reference to figures. In fig. 2 the basket 9 is shown in its vertical storage position very close to the trim 5 of the access door without however touching it. By observing fig. 2A, it will be seen that the basket is shown in a partially open position, at top dead center, the articulated rod 14 being vertical, the center of vity of the basket then being at its highest point.
Moving the basket into either position lowers the center of gatvity. Thus, when the basket is moved from the position of the freeze 2A to the position of fig. 2, there is a descent of the center of gravity. Thus, the force of gravity contributes to maintaining the basket 9 in its storage position in the vicinity of the door trim. Since a force must be communicated to the basket so that it comes to occupy the position of fig. 2A it is obvious to those skilled in the art that the basket 9 cannot be inadvertently removed from its storage position by slamming the access door to the cooler.
Fig. 2B shows the basket in its open position, making an approximate 90 ° angle with the door trim. It will be noted that in this position of the basket, the guide pin 16 is disposed at the lower end of the guide 17, thus supporting part of the weight of the basket. In this position of the parts, the pivot pin 15 is relatively far from the guide pin 16, reducing the forces overall. For this reason, the basket, in its open position, is supported firmly and will not flex significantly under load.
By examining fig. 2B, it will be observed that when the basket is completely open, it occupies a slightly inclined position which favors
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Vorises the movement of all objects placed in the basket in the direction of the door trim. This makes it easier to fill the basket and to some extent reduces the movement of food packages as a result of the basket being closed. The inclined position of the open horn also slightly reduces the torque imposed at points 15 and 16.
Om will appreciate that when the food packages have been placed in the basket 9, the latter can be easily lifted from the position of FIG. 2B towards the closed storage position shown in FIG. 2.
Attention is now drawn to the construction characteristics of the basket and its supports. With reference in particular to FIGS. 2B and 3, it will be seen that the support comprises a protruding planar member 18 attached to a vertical mounting member 19 which is fixed, for example by means of screws 20, to a bolt plate 21, provided behind the trim 5. At the inner end of the element 19 is provided a lug 22 bent inwardly of relatively limited vertical dimensions, as shown in Figs. 2 and 2B. These ears function as stops against which the lower transverse rod 23 of the basket rests when the basket is closed (see FIG. 2).
This not only helps to remove the forces from the pivot points but also ensures that the basket will occupy a rest position substantially parallel to the surface of the liner.
The assembly rods by means of which the basket is supported are shown in detail in FIG. 4 and it can be seen that the rod 12 is fixed by brazing or welding to the end 11 of the basket. It will be seen that the pivot pin 13 is riveted, as at 24 to the fixed rod 12. The pivot pin crosses, with tolerance, the articulated rod 14 which is kept in engagement with the pin by means of the elastic ring. 13a
A similar pivot connection is provided at 15, with the pivot pin riveted to rod 14 and pivotally engaging with bracket 10. Guide pin 16 is riveted to fixed rod at 25 and passes tolerantly through bracket. 10 in 26.
Attention is now drawn to the arrangement of the base rods 27 of the basket. As shown particularly well in fig. 2 the rods 27 are inclined downwards away from the trim when the basket occupies its storage position. This low tilt tends to keep the food package at a low angle which reduces the tendency of the packages to press against the surface of the filling. In addition, when the basket is moved from its storage position to its access position, the slightly inclined food packages faithfully follow the movement of the basket and do not tend, due to their inertia, to remain in the position of contact against the surface of the lining.
With particular reference to FIG. 5, it should also be observed that rods 28 are provided at the top of the basket, to constitute a partial truss of the basket so that the food packages do not tend to fall out of the basket when the latter occupies its open position.
It is important to note that thanks to the mechanism of the present invention it is possible to obtain a swivel basket for use in domestic ice-boxes or in refrigerators, which do not require the presence of clasps, latches or locks to keep it in place. the position
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
closed against the access door surface. In ordinary use, it is virtually impossible to remove the basket from its closed position by slamming the door.
