Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The invention relates to an automatic brake capable of making up for an absence or an insufficiency of the braking carried out in a known manner by the usual hand and foot brakes. Such a safety brake is especially useful in trucks carrying heavy loads, but it is also suitable for cars, especially in mountainous countries.

   The automatic safety brake according to the present invention essentially comprises the use of a brake pad arranged in front of each rear wheel, so that it can, under appropriate control, be brought from a rest position to a position under the wheel, which exerts pressure on it causing the vehicle to slip and then stop
According to a first embodiment, each shoe is carried vertically by a support pivoting on the rear axle and movable longitudinally, while, according to a second embodiment, the shoe is at rest housed horizontally in a box fixed under the bodywork at 1 front of each wheel.

   The present invention also provides a device for locking the control mechanism in order to prevent any unforeseen triggering of the latter following rupture of the return springs of the mechanism.

   The drawing appended to this memorandum represents, by way of example only,
Figure 1, a front elevational view of a rear wheel of a motor vehicle, to which the brake device according to the invention is applied;
Figure 2, a corresponding side elevational view;
Figure 3, a view on a larger scale of the locked control of the brake in the rest position;

Figure 5, a view of a control cable tension bar in the case of a truck;
Figure 6, a side elevational view of an alternative construction of the safety brake, including
Figure 7 is a corresponding rear side view, and
Figure 8, a plan view.

   In the embodiment shown especially in Figs, 1 to 4, the safety frainage device according to the invention comprises a plate 1 made of sheet metal arranged at the front of each rear wheel 2, of which it has the curvature. circumferential and width. This shoe, which has on its outer face a toothing 3, preferably with chevrons in order to allow a sudden stop on the ice, is fixed by its base to the end of a tube 4 carried by a bracket. 5 embracing the axle 6 around which it can pivot. The tube 4 can slide at its rear part in a sleeve 7. the branches of the caliper 5 passing through grooves longitudina-- the opposite 'provided in the tube 4. The latter has a length such that the pad comes to rest on the part of the wheel in the event of a puncture of the tire.

   A spring 8 disposed inside the sleeve 7 maintains the contact of the latter with the tube 4, while an external spring 8 'passes this tube against the axle 6.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   At its free end, the shoe 1 is connected to a chain 9 which passes longitudinally through a square metal box 10, fixed to the chasis 11 of the vehicle. Inside the box 10, the chain is connected to the end of a central bar 12, passing through the front wall of the box 10 forming a guide. At a certain distance outside the box 10, the bar 12 carries a disc 13 against which the springs 14 and 15, wound around said bar, bear respectively on either side. The spring 14, stronger than the spring 15, rests against the box 10, while the spring 15 bears against a stop plate 16 fixed to the outer end of the bar 12.

   It is easy to see that, when the shoe 1 is in the resting position, the chain 9 is kept tensioned by the spring 15, which at the same time obviates the jolts of the vehicle, and that, when the shoe is brought into the braking position, the manner which will be indicated later, the bar 12 is driven by the weight of the pad inside the box 10, while the spring 15 compresses. At a certain moment, the stopper plate 16 meets the disc 13 and pushes it back compressing the spring 14, which serves as a shock absorber.

   Each rear wheel 2 being provided with the braking device described above, the respective tubes 4 are joined together by a transverse tube 17 passing under the universal joint.

   On the other hand, one of the elements of a gimbal 18 fixed on the rear axle 19 has a horizontal axis 20, on which is fixed a vertical plate 21 by means of a bolt 22, on which is mounted a rectangular slide. housed in a horizontal groove 23 drilled in said plate (Fig.3), which is thus prevented from tilting. On the plate 21 can be pivoted at 24 (Fig. 3 and 4) a lever 25 terminating at its jaw-shaped base 26 which, in the rest position, opposes a curved portion 27 provided at the lower end of the jaw. the plate 21, so as to support the transverse tube 17 between these curvatures 26 and 27.

   On the other hand, on the upper part of the lever 25 can pivot at 28 an oscillating member 29 which, in the rest position, is forced by a spring 30, fixed to a pin 31 on the one hand and to the plate 21 d 'on the other hand, to apply by a corresponding notched part against a bevel 32 of the lever 25. A cable 33 is also connected to the pin 31, which ends at a lever 34 of the dashboard 35 of the vehicle. . This control cable, loose to a certain point to obviate the bumps of the vehicle, passes over a certain length of a sheath 36 fixed at a point on the bodywork. At the rear, the lever 25 meets a stopper 37.

   At the rear of the plate 21 is fixed a leaf spring 28, the free end of which carries an ergrot 39 which, in the rest position of the pads 1, hooks the lever 25 at the front. This lug forms a lock. anticipation of spring breakage 30.

   If traction is exerted on the lever 34, the oscillating member 29 pivots while tensioning the spring 20 and it takes relative to the lever 25 1 ° .position shown in FIG. 4. In this movement, the oscillating member 29 pushes back the lug 39 of the blade 38 and drives the lever 25 to the left which, pivoting around its axis 24, releases the transverse tube 17 which falls on the ground with the pads. 1. These are thus placed on the ground (see the dotted line in Fig. 2) in front of the rear wheels 2, which rise above forcing them to slip, thus causing automatic braking, which continues until stopping the vehicle.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The transverse tube 17 being lowered, provision must be made for it to be raised after braking by the pads 1. For this purpose (Fig. 3), the tube 17 is connected to a cable 40, which, passing over a pulley 41 carried by the the upper end of the plate 21 will be fixed at an easily accessible point 42 of the bodywork, a certain length of calbe passing for example through an eyelet-spring 43, which opens under the weight of the tube 17 and pads 1, when the braking is triggered.

   When the cross tube 17 fell, the lug 39 of the blade 38 was erased and allowed the lever 25 to oscillate freely. When the tube 17 is raised, by acting as has been said on the cable 40, the tube 17 first meets the lever 25, which it removes, then a second lever 44, which pivots at 45 on the rear face of the plate 21 and is subjected to the action of a return spring 46. This lever 44 is thus pushed back by the tube 17 and it then releases the lug-latch 39, which is returned by the blade 38 in its original position, that is to say in its position for engaging the lever 25.

   In the case of a truck, it is possible to omit box 10 and to connect each pad 1 to a cable 47 (Pig.5), which will end in a bar 48 passing through a shoe 49 fixed to the frame. of the truck, Beyond the shoe wraps around the bar 48 a spring 50 which, bearing between said shoe and a disc 51, absorbs shocks.

   According to an alternative construction shown in FIG. 6 to 8, under the vehicle frame, at the front of each rear wheel, is fixed horizontally a metal box 52, the bottom of which is formed by a shoe 1, also having on the outside a toothed surface, preferably teeth with rafters. This shoe is carried at the front by an inclined lug 53 integral with the box 52 and at the rear by a lever 54 wedged on a vertical shaft 55, which is carried by collars 56 fixed to the rear wall of said box.

   At its anterior end, the pad 1 is connected to a chain 57, which runs through the entire boot 52 towards the rear, leaves it through a window 58 and enters it through a window 59 to be attached to a bar 60 guided horizontally. by a partition 61 of said box. On the bar 60, beyond this partition is wound a spring 62 bearing against the latter and a plate 63 fixed to the bar; this spring is intended as before to absorb shocks,
A horizontal lever 64 is also wedged on the vertical shaft 55, which a spring 65 tends to move away from the box 52. Between the latter and the lever 64 is inserted the curved end 66 of a lever 67 pivoting at 68 This lever serves as a lock and ends in a mass 69 forming a counterpoise A lug 70 limits the pivoting of the lever 64.

   While the control lever 64 has a hole 71 where the control cable 33 is fixed, the locking lever 67 has an eyelet 72 which this cable passes through before being wound around the pulley 73 mounted laterally. on the box 52.

   A device similar to that which has just been described being mounted at the front of each rear wheel, the boxes 52 of the two devices are joined together by the same cable 33 and from the middle of this cable another, which ends , as before, to a lever on the vehicle's dashboard.

   Thus, by exerting traction on the cable 33, we first act on the lever 67, which unlocks the control lever 64; the latter by pivoting causes the lever 54 to retract, so that the pad 1 escapes

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 eg boxes 52 to fall to the ground and present themselves to the pressure of the corresponding wheel.

   In order to protect the braking mechanism against mud, a protective plate 74 has been placed at the rear of each box 52, which covers the levers 54 and 64.

   Of course, some mechanical components could be replaced by other devices performing an identical function.
