<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

This invention relates to the manufacture of turbine blades and it constitutes an improvement of the invention which is the subject of main patent No. 516,850.
According to the main patent, a turbine blade is produced from a metal strip having a uniform cross section over its entire length corresponding to that of the blade itself, by electrically forcing a part of the end. of this strip to form a blade base of larger cross section than that of the blade itself and then shaping this blade base to give it the blade root shape required to attach it to a rotor turbine. It was proposed to shape the upset blade base by first forging it to approximately give it the required shape for the root and then to machine the forged blade base to complete its shaping and prepare it for use. be attached to a turbine rotor.
The improved process according to the present invention consists in producing a turbine rotor blade from a metal strip having a uniform cross section along its entire length corresponding exactly to that of the blade itself, by forcing d 'electrically first part of the end of the strip to form a blade base, of greater cross-section than that of the blade itself, then by electrically induction heating the upset base. a temperature more suitable for drilling and finally shaping this blade base while it is at that temperature, pressing or drawing it into the blade root shape required for its attachment to a turbine rotor.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figures 1 to 4 are diagrams illustrating a method of manufacturing a turbine blade; Figure 5 is a suchematic front elevation of a finished blade and Figures 6 to 9 are diagrams illustrating four operations of a variant of the process.
A turbine blade is produced from a piece of strip of metal of determined length, denoted by 10 in Figures 1 to 5. Over its entire length, this strip 10 has a uniform cross section corresponding exactly to that. of the part constituting the blade proper in the finished blade shown in FIG. 5, the strip having, for example, an aerodynamic uniform section and preferably being fed at the desired length out of a laminated strip of material appropriate ,.
The electrical discharge from one end of the metal strip 10 is effected by mounting the strip 10 between the elements 11 of a robust two-part copper primary electrode, the two parts 11 being constructed and charged with. so as to tighten the strip 10 with sufficient lateral force to ensure good electrical contact while allowing the strip 10 to slide longitudinally between them under the thrust of a plunger 12 intended to exert pressure on one end of the strip. strip 10, as shown, to press the other end 10x thereof by the tip against a second electrode 13.
The electrical resistance at the point of contact between the strip 10 and the electrode 13 causes the 10x end of the strip to heat up and this heating, together with the longitudinal pressure, forces the end of the strip. in contact with the electrode 13 to take the form of a metal bulb. This bulb produced by electrically pushing the end of the strip 10 gives a blade base 14 (fig. 2) in addition
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
strong section than the remainder of the strip 10 which constitutes the blade proper
In FIG. 1, the contact face of the second electrode 13 is shown recessed at 15 to present a cavity which facilitates the formation of the blade base 14 during the electric discharge operation.
The next operation consists in placing the blade base 14 in the field of a heating coil 16 by electric induction, as shown in FIG. 3, to bring the blade base 14 to a temperature suitable for forging, after What, the strip 10 is fed into a stamping press 17 as shown in figo 4, the stamping tools 18 closing on the forging vane base 14, as indicated by the arrows, to fa- Identify part 14 and give it the shape of the blade root required for attachment to a turbine rotor. In figs. 4 and 5 the blade base 14 is shown after stamping shaping to form buttresses or "fir" shaped tenons 19 intended to be engaged in complementary grooves of a turbine rotor (not shown).
If the end 10s of the strip 10 has an aerodynamic or other profile of variable thickness and is cut square, that is to say perpendicular to the length of the strip and its end face is in full contact with the face of the second electrode 13, -an irregular and improperly shaped bulb could form due to the relatively -setter heating-up and deformation of the thinner part of the airfoil compared to at the thicker part. This butt face is therefore cut obliquely with the thicker part of the strip first coming into contact with the electrode 13, as has already been described in detail in main patent No. 516,850, in that the end face makes an angle with the face of the second electrode.
This principle of first contacting the thicker part of the profile of the strip with the face of the second electrode can be applied to sections other than that mentioned above. For example, the strip may be thicker in the middle and in this case the end of the strip would be suitably shaped to ensure that the middle part first contacts the face of the electrode, giving for example a rounded shape at this end or by cutting it into a corner.
The above description covers the manufacture of the turbine blades individually from a strip of metal 10 slightly longer than the final total length of the blade itself and base 14, the pieces of strip 10. being cut from a strip having everywhere exactly the profile required for the aude
However, the invention also applies to the manufacture of turbine rotor blades, in succession, from such a strip and such a manufacturing process is illustrated by FIGS. 6 to 9 inclusive. On these figs. 20 is the two-part electrode and 21 is the second two-part electrode arranged as shown in FIG. 1 but movable in block in the horizontal direction in the figs in addition to the fact that the elements of the electrode 20 can move away from each other.
A piece of web 22 is fed horizontally by means of a pair of advancing rollers 23 and between the advancing rollers and electrode 20 is a stamping press 24 with stamping tools. 25, a coil 26 of electric induction heating and cutting blades 27
As shown in figo 6, the band 22 is driven by the advancement rollers 23 until the end face comes into contact under pressure

with electrode 21, the parts of the two-part electrode 20 closing over the strip during this first operation of electrically pushing the end of the strip 22 to form the widened base 28 of the strip. 'au- be.
When this operation is completed, the parts of the electrode
20 diverge, as shown in Figure 7, and the strip is withdrawn from electrode 21 by advancing rollers 23 aided by a plunger. 29 which passes through the center of the second electrode 21, until the base 28 of the blade is in the field of the induction heating coil 26, electric, the plunger 29 then turning over. in the position shown in fig 6.
The coil 26 is then energized to bring the base 28 of the vane to a forging temperature and after that the strip 22 is withdrawn by the advancement rollers 23 to present the vane base 28 to the tools 25 of the press. stamp that close over, as shown in fig. 8, to give it its final blade root shape.
After the completion of the stamping operation, the tools 25 move apart again, the electrodes 20 and 21 are moved and the web 22 is again advanced by the advancing rollers a predetermined distance. , then the shear 27 operates, as shown in fig. 9, to separate from the strip 22 the blade base 28 shaped as the blade root as well as an undeformed part of the strip 22 constituting the blade itself.
After the pass shown in pin 9, the shears 27 opens, the electrodes 20 and 21 resume their active positions, as shown in FIG. 6 and the cycle begins again.
By electric induction heating, an electrically forced vane base can be quickly brought to a temperature more suitable for forging so that shaping to the required final root shape can be accomplished by pressing or stamping without the need for any. subsequent machining
