Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

     Evidemment, lorsqu'on traite une matière contenant 60% d'oléfines polymérisables, il estnécessaire de remettre dans le circuit une grande quantité de gaz d'échappement dé-oléfinisé et de faire passer dans la nône du catalyseur de polymérisation une quantité totale qui soit égale à environ six fois la quantité nouvellement introduite dans le traitement. Dans ce type d'opération, l'appareil de fractionnement vers le- quel on dirige l'effluent venant des réacteurs de polymérisation doit trai-

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

   The present invention relates to a process for the polymerization of olefinic hydrocarbons, and more particularly for the conversion of normally gaseous olefinic hydrocarbons, into liquid hydrocarbons which can be used directly as anti-explosive constituents of motor fuels or which can undergo hydrogenation to give Substantially saturated hydrocarbons which can be used as constituents of fuel for engines which must have a substantially saturated character, for example gasoline for airplanes.

   In a more specific sense, the invention relates to improvements in catalytic polymerization processes operating in conjunction with petroleum cracking plants to produce high value engine fuel, starting from gases formed incidentally during periods of time. cracking operations.

   The polymerization of gases containing olefins is carried out commercially both by thermal means and by analytical means. The first of these methods, which is carried out at relatively high temperatures and pressures, gives substantial yields of olefinic hydrocarbons as well as olefins, while the catalytic polymerization is carried out at much lower temperatures and generally at high temperatures. lower pressures to produce a liquid olefinic product. In the catalytic process, one type of catalyst that has been successfully used commercially is the solid phosphoric acid catalyst, as described in U.S. Patent No. 1,993,513 and other patents.

   In this process, gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures containing olefins are passed through fixed layers or sections of granular material consisting essentially of particulate matter prepared by incorporating a relatively inert and generally siliceous material with phosphoric acid. , to produce a paste which is either calcined to produce a cake which is ground and graded to recover catalyst particles, or the paste is extruded to produce particles which are later calcined.

  In each case, the particles prepared are subjected to controlled drying operations so as to vary the actual composition of the active polymerization acid with respect to its degree of hydration.

   In commercial use, it is customary to work with a number of polymerization chambers having substantially the same dimensions filled with substantially the same volume of this type of polymerization catalyst. It is also customary to operate these catalyst towers in series or in parallel and to partially cool the effluent from one of the reactors before charging it to the subsequent reactor, arranged in series, in order to prevent the exothermic heat of reaction to produce an excessive rise in temperature, which could result in dehydration and coking of the catalyst.

   Obviously, there is a pressure drop along the flow line in the series of catalyst reactors, and this pressure drop is another factor which must be taken into account for the safe operation of such an installation. when it is desired to obtain high yields of the required products.

   The present precedent is an improvement in the processes of polymerizing normally gaseous olefinic hydrocarbons in order to form liquid polymers therefrom, while using a solid catalyst in the form of grains, and more particularly the solid phosphoric acid catalyst briefly described. above, but the process will also be easy to apply when employing other solid state polymerization catalysts, such as copper pyrophosphate, activated clays, silica-alumina compounds, and other mixtures of. silica

A specific embodiment of the invention relates to an olefinic polymerization process which comprises contacting a hydrocarbon fraction containing olefins, under poly conditions.
 EMI2.1
 The solid polymerization catalyzed in a series of thick catalyzing sections, increasing in the direction of flow as it cools. 6tYt: that '<ltH' section $ 'dt "L èata: Iïyseur by switching back part of the total effluent to the analyzer, including the fraction contiaaut # polymers, separation of non-recycled effluent into polymers and unconverted hydrocarbons, and recovery of said polymers.

   Another embodiment of the invention relates to a process for the polymerization of olefins which comprises contacting a hydrocarbon fraction containing the olefins under conditions of temperature and pressure facilitating the polymerization, in the presence of a catalyst. the solid phosphoric acid contained in a plurality of catalyst sections which gradually increase in thickness in the direction of flow, effecting cooling between the catalyst sections by recirculating part of the catalyst. the total effluent from said catalyst sections including the fraction containing unconverted olefins and polymers, the unrecirculated effluent being separated into polymers and unconverted hydrocarbons, and carrying out the recovery of said polymers.

   A chamber type polymerization plant provides an economical method of converting normally gaseous olefins to normally liquid hydrocarbons having a boiling point close to that of gasoline. A plant of this type is particularly suitable for the polymerization of raw materials containing up to about 35 mole percent propylene and butylene. Other olefin-containing fractions, such as frequently produced by the catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon oils, contain about 50 to 60 mole percent olefins with a molecular weight greater than that of ethylene.

   Temperature control during the polymerization of olefin raw materials containing 50-60% of these olefins is relatively difficult in a chamber type polymerization unit by the methods heretofore used, because of the heat. high exothermicity of the polymerization reaction In order to maintain a temperature of about 400 to 500 F in a chamber type polymerization reactor, it is necessary to limit the olefin content of the hydrocarbon fraction treated to between about 15 and about 35 percent, and preferably between 20 and 25 percent.

   When producing starting materials containing more than 35 percent polymerizable olefins, temperature control is generally effected by returning a portion of the substantially de-olefinized exhaust gas to the circuit, for example the fraction. propane-butane, and mixing it with the starting material which contains the olefin so that the combined feed to the polymerization reactors contains for example 20 to 25 mole percent of polymerizable olefins (propylene and butylene).

     Obviously, when treating a material containing 60% polymerizable olefins, it is necessary to put a large quantity of de-olefinized exhaust gas back into the circuit and to pass a total quantity of the polymerization catalyst into the pipe which is equal to about six times the amount newly introduced into the treatment. In this type of operation, the fractionation apparatus to which the effluent from the polymerization reactors is directed must treat.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 ter a much larger volume of material than in the case where a smaller quantity of de-olefinized gas is returned to the circuit.

   Thus, the fractionator which must handle all of the reactor effluent would be about six times the size of the fractionator which would be required if it were possible to process the new material without dilution with water. matter recirculated. Because of the need for an additional fractionation plant, a chamber type polymerization plant loses its low cost advantage when working with materials containing more than about 35 mole percent. polymerizable olefins.

   This situation is improved, and the utility of the chambered tye polymerization unit is increased, if a combined modification of the construction of the apparatus and the process is employed, as will be. described below. According to the present invention, better control of the polymerization reaction is obtained by limiting the depth or thickness of the initial catalyst layer or section of the polymerization plant. By thus delimiting the thickness of the catalyst section, it is possible to limit the extent of the polymerization which takes place therein, and thus to reduce the temperature rise which occurs in the first catalyst layer. .

   An excessive increase in temperature in the first catalyst layer results in dehydration of the catalyst, formation of coke, or other heavy hydrocarbon material, a large pressure drop, and possibly clogging of the first catalyst reactor. By thus providing control of the temperature rise which occurs in the first catalyst layer or section, it is subsequently possible to control the temperatures of other subsequent catalyst layers by controlling their depths or thicknesses, thus. than by injection of liquid quenching material, which preferably will be the total effluent from the catalyst reactors, said liquid quenching material being directed between the catalyst layers or between the catalyst reactors.

   By means of this method of delimiting the thicknesses of the various catalyst layers, and by recirculating part of the total effluent, it is possible to polymerize a substantial proportion of the olefins contained in raw materials containing up to about 60% polymerizable olefins, using reasonable amounts of cooling material.

  Other suitable cooling materials include fractions of the raw material, newly introduced to the polymerization zones, as well as the first fraction of the fractionator which is essentially a low olefin C3-C4 fraction. Thus, by employing the process according to the present invention, the utility of the chamber-type polymerization plant can be improved, so that it can be economically used in combination with the catalytic cracking operations which produce gas. gas with a high olefin content.

   The nature of the present process will be made clearer by referring to the attached Figures 1 and 2 which schematically show in general side elevations two arrangements of interconnected elements in which operations can be performed within the scope of the specification. present invention. The drawings, however, do not represent all of the modifications of the invention which may be made.

   Referring to Figure 1, a raw material, for example the so-called C3-C4 fraction containing propane, propylene, butanes and butylenes is introduced through line 1 and valve 2 to pump or compressor 3, which discharged through line 4 and valve 5 to the coil

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 6 which receives heat from heater 7 and then passes through line 8, valves 9 and 10 to reactor 11 containing a layer or section or; particles of a solid state polymerization catalyst maintained at a temperature of about 400 to 500 F, and a pressure of about 100 to 2000 pounds per square inch.

   A part of the CC fraction evacuated by the pump or compressor 3 and by the pipe 4 can be directed through the pipe 12 containing the valve 13 to the heat exchanger 14 which receives heat from the reaction products of the process as described below, and is directed from there by the pipe 15 and valve 16 to the pipe 4 already mentioned, and from there by the heating coil 6.

   Reactor 11 is the first in a series of reactors, and other subsequent reactors in the series have a length which increases in the direction of flow in said series. For example, the reactor 11 has a length such that the catalyst layer therein has a thickness of 60 cm. while reactors 19, 22 and 25 are of such lengths that the catalyst layers therein have thicknesses or depths of 90, 150 and 240 cm.

   From reactor 11, the mixture of polymers and unconverted raw material resulting from the polymerization reaction which is carried out there is directed through line 17 and valve 18 to reactor 19 and the effluent from this reactor passes into line 20 and through valve 21 to reactor 22 From reactor 22, the mixture of unconverted hydrocarbons and polymers passes through pipeline 23 containing valve 24 to reactor 25. Also, pipeline 8 is connected by a bypass line 26 containing valve 27 to line 17 and thence to reactor 19 so that the mixture of hydrocarbons admitted to the process can pass directly to reactor 19 if reactor 11 becomes clogged or rendered inoperative in another way by an untimely maneuver,

   as for example by admitting liquid water with the vapor which is added to prevent dehydration of the catalyst as described below.

   From reactor 25, the effluent comprising the olefin polymers and the unconverted C3-C4 fraction is directed through line 28 and valve 29 to the fractionation apparatus 30. Part of the mixture of polymers and non-C3-C4 fraction. converted passes from line 28 through line 31 and valve 32 to pump 33 which discharges through line 34 to heat exchanger 14,

   and pipeline 35 containing valve 36 Part of the mixture of polymers and unconverted raw material contained in pipeline 35 passes from there through manifold 37 and valve 38 into pipeline 23 by means of which the effluent is led from reactor 22 to the reactor 25. Another part of the material contained in the collector 37 passes through the bypass 39 and valve 40 in the line 20. The mixture of polymers and unconverted raw material is thus put back into circuit and mixed with polymerization products from each reactor before being charged to the next reactor in the series of polymerization reactors, in amounts such that the polymerization temperature is maintained between about 400 and 500 F.

   When a solid phosphoric acid polymerization catalyst is employed, the mixtures which contain the hydrocarbons and which are directed to the various reactors of the series such as reactors 11, 19, 22 and 25 as described herein are also mixed with controlled amounts of water vapor in order to maintain the catalyst in the desired state of hydration and thus to help maintain its catalytic activity at a relatively high value for a long time. Water vapor is therefore directed under pressure through the manifold 41, and valve 42 in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 line 23 and from there to reactor 25.

   The manifold 41 is also connected by the bypass 43 and valve 44 to the line 8, by the bypass 45 and valve 46 to the line 17 and by the bypass 47 and valve 48 to the line 20. Water vapor is thus mixed with the mixture of hydrocarbons directed into each of the catalyst reactors 11, 19, 22 and 25. The quantity of water vapor (from 0.2 to 3.5 moles approximately per cent of the hydrocarbons introduced) directed to each of these reactors is regulated by the working temperatures in each of these reactors, less water vapor being required at lower polymerization temperatures than those required at higher temperatures to maintain the solid phosphoric acid catalyst to the desired degree of hydration to reduce coke formation and increase catalyst life.

   The fractionator 30 to which the effluent from the polymerization reactors is directed (except that which is switched back on), has a re-boiling coil 49 which receives heat from a source not shown in. drawing and is used to effect a separation between the normally gaseous and normally liquid constituents of the material introduced therein.

   From the top of fractionator 30, a relatively low olefin content C -C fraction is directed through line 50 and valve 51 to condenser 52, from where the resulting mixture of liquid and vapors is directed through the downward pipe 53 and valve 54 to the manifold 55 having a gas exhaust pipe 56 containing the valve 57 and a liquid discharge pipe 58 containing the valve 59. A portion of the liquefied material contained in the manifold 55 is withdrawn from there through line 60 and valve 61 to pump 62 which discharges through line 63 and valve 64 near the top of fractionator 30 to help control temperatures therein.

   From the bottom of the fractionator 30 the normally liquid polymers, substantially free of unconverted C3-C4 hydrocarbons, are discharged through the pipeline. 65 and valve 66 to storage or some use not shown in the accompanying schematic drawing, Fig. 2 schematically shows an alternative polymerization plant having a catalyst reactor provided with a plurality of catalyst layers. Different thicknesses or depths, increasing in the direction of flow in the reactor.

   According to this modification of the invention, a hydrocarbon fraction containing olefins, e.g. a C3-C4 fraction of paraffins and olefins is directed through line 67 and valve 68 to pump or compressor 69 which discharges through line 70 and valve 71 into heating coil 72 which receives heat from heater 73, and d wherein the hot mixture of hydrocarbons passes through line 74 and valve 75 into reactor 76 which contains a number of catalyst layers or sections shown schematically as four, each such catalyst layer or section being supported. by a screen or other suitable means indicated in the drawing by screens 77, 78, 79 and 80.

   These screens or other support means are spaced at such intervals in reactor 76 that the catalyst layers or sections supported therein are relatively thin near the inlet of the reactor and gradually become thicker towards the outlet thereof. reactor. For example, catalyst layers supported by screens 77, 78, 79 and 80, can be arranged so as to have respective thicknesses of 60, 90, 150 and 240 cm.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   When employing a solid phosphoric acid catalyst, it is generally recommended to mix the raw material with controlled amounts of water vapor in order to maintain the state of hydration of the catalyst which is necessary for a stable. high polymerizing activity and for a long catalyst life.

   Thus, in order to provide for hydration of the catalyst, pressurized steam is introduced into manifold 81 and valve 82 to the last catalyst layer or section of reactor 76. Hydration of the catalyst in the other sections of the reactor - tor 76 is maintained by directing part of the steam from the manifold 81 through the bypass line 83 which contains the valve 84, by the bypass line 85 which contains the valve 86, and by the duct 87 which contains the valve 88.

   From the discharge end of the reactor 76, part of the resulting mixture of unconverted C3 C4 polymers and fractions is discharged through line 89 and valve 90 to the fractionator 91 and another part of the mixture of polymers and fraction. Unconverted CC, discharged through line 89, is directed through line 92 and valve 93 to pump 94 which discharges through line 95, valve 96 and heat exchanger 97 into manifold 98 which contains valve 99.

  In the heat exchangers 97, the mixture of polymers and unconverted C3-C4 fractions which are at the polymerization temperature, gives up part of its heat to a part of the C3-C4 fraction which is introduced, which is directed from line 70 through line 100 and valve 101 to heat exchanger 97 and from there through line 102 and valve 103, to line 70 already mentioned, and which is connected to heating coil 72.

   From heat exchanger 97, the cooled mixture of polymers and unconverted C3-C4 fractions, passes through manifold 98 and valve 99 and through bypass line-104 into valve 105 and through bypass line 106 containing valve 107 to reactor 76, to help control the polymerization temperature in each of the catalyst layers following the first catalyst layer. Line 74 is also connected by bypass line 108 and valve 109 to manifold 98, so that the hydrocarbons introduced into the process can pass directly into the second catalyst zone of reactor 76 if it arrives at the first. catalyst zone supported by screen 77 either obstructed or otherwise rendered inoperative.

   The heat necessary for the fractionation of the mixture of polymers of unconverted C3-C4 fractions in the fractionator 91 is supplied by a re-boiling coil 110 in which water vapor or the like is supplied. heating fluid from a source not shown in the attached schematic drawing.

   Unconverted C3-C4 hydrocarbon vapors are directed from fractionator 91 through line 111 and valve 112 to condenser 113, resulting in liquefied hydrocarbons or a mixture of liquefied hydrocarbon and vapors. is directed by the down pipe 114 and valve 115 to the manifold 116 provided with the gas discharge line 117 containing the valve 118, and also with the liquid discharge line 119 containing the valve 120 liquefied material is directed from manifold 116 through line 121 and valve 122 to pump 123 which discharges through line 124 and valve 125 near the top of fractionator 91 to help control temperatures there. .

   The polymers thus separated, C3-C $ hydrocarbons

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 not converted in the fractionator 91 are directed through line 126 and valve 127 to cooling and / or storage not shown in the schematic drawing.

   The nature of the present invention will be further indicated by way of example which, however, is not to be construed as limiting the scope of the invention.

   A plant of a general character described in connection with Figure 1 is used to polymerize a C3-C4 fraction containing about 30 mole percent propylene and 25 mole percent butylenes, including isobutylene and normal butylenes. The feed is preheated to a temperature of 400 F and passes in series through the four reactors, each of which contains a fixed layer of 5 x 5 mm catalyst pellets.

   with solid phosphoric acid Part of the effluent from the last catalyst reactor is partially cooled by heat exchange with part of the fresh feed in heat exchangers 14 and then the cooled effluent is mixed with the effluent from each of the catalyst reactors, before this material passes to the next catalyst reactor, of the series of four reactors shown in Figure 1. In reactor 1, the temperature of the catalyst increases from 400 F at the inlet to about 470 F at the outlet where it is mixed with the partially cooled recirculation material to lower the temperature of the mixture to about 400 F, and the mixture is introduced at that temperature into the second reactor in the series.

   During the passage through the second reactor, the temperature of the polymerization mixture increases from 400 F to about 475 F due to the exothermic heat of the polymerization reaction. The effluent from the second reactor is also mixed with part. of recirculation material cooled so that the mixture of hydrocarbons introduced into the third reactor in the series enters this reactor at a temperature of about 400 F and during passage through this reactor reaches a maximum temperature of about 480 F due to the heat of polymerization.

   The effluent from this reactor is then mixed with a sufficient amount of recirculation material to lower the temperature of the resulting mixture to 400 F and is charged at that temperature to the fourth reactor in the series of four reactors. polymerization; these reactors have a length which increases in the direction of flow through the polymerization plant.

   The quantity of polymerization effluent including unconverted polymers and C3-C4 fractions, which is thus cooled by heat exchange with part of the fresh raw material and is then put back into the circuit and mixed. with the effluent from each of the various reactors to control the temperature of the reaction mixture before its introduction into the reactor which follows in the series of polymerization reactors, represents approximately 0.45 times by volume the new C3-C4 fraction which is introduced in the process. Consequently, the mixture of polymers and unconverted C3-C4 fractions, which is directed from the last reactor in the series to the fractionation apparatus, represents about 1.32 times the volume of the C3-C4 fraction. news that is introduced into the process.

   When the polymerization is carried out at a pressure of 500 pounds per square inch (about 35 atmospheres), an amount of vapor corresponding to about 0.8 mol% of the total reaction mixture present in each of the reactors is introduced in stages. points situated between the various reactors as shown in the accompanying schematic drawing, in order to prevent excessive dehydration of the catalyst and subsequent loss of polymerizing activity.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   A similar type of polymerization treatment of a CC fraction containing 50-60 mol% propylene plus butylenes is carried out in a plant of the general character shown in figure 2, in which the various catalyst layers of different thicknesses are carried out. contained in a single reactor, but it is also possible to use a plurality of such reactors.

   In this type of operation, a sufficient quantity of the polymerization effluent comprising polymers and the unconverted C3-C4 fraction (mainly propane and butanes) is put back into the circuit and introduced into the polymerization reactor. at points in advance of each of the various catalyst layers or sections after the first catalyst layer, to help control tewperature therein. The temperature in the first catalyst layer is controlled by the amount of catalyst that s found therein and by the rate of flow of mixed hydrocarbons circulating therein.
