Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   This invention relates to washers for use in conjunction with a motor driven roller or calender wringer and relates to the drive of the wringer or calender.

   According to the invention, the washing machine comprises a tank for the washing liquid, provided with an internal pulsator, and a motor mounted: under the tank to actuate the pulsator and it is characterized in that it comprises a flexible transmission connected to the engine by a one-way or freewheel coupling and terminating near the top of the tank by a vertical shaft connected to the wringer or calender to be actuated, or to a power take-off to actuate this wringer or calender, and a device for reversing the running of the motor at will.

   The use of a flexible transmission allows the PTO or wringer drive shaft to be positioned close to the corner of the wringer housing.

   Preferably, the pulsator is also actuated via a one-way or freewheel coupling, arranged so that when the motor rotates in one direction it actuates the pulsator but not the wringer or calender, while when 'it turns in the other direction it activates the extractor or calender, but not the pulsator.

   In one embodiment of the invention, the lower end of the flexible transmission carries a horizontal axis shaft actuated by the motor by means of a belt and pulleys.

   The arrangement described provides an extremely simple form of transmission for a power driven roller wringer because the drive is controlled only by a reversing switch which can be placed at any convenient location and can have a neutral position to stop the spinner. engine. No gearing or coupling is used apart from the freewheel device which does not require a hand control.

   However, it is preferable to keep the simplicity of the machine, that the wringer is operated only in one direction. This does not necessarily imply a less extensive use of the wringer if it is mounted so as to be able to pivot about a vertical axis to allow the laundry to pass directly from the tub or to pass it directly. wringer in the tub.

   Thus, according to another aspect of the invention, the washing machine, which comprises a tank for the washing liquid, of approximately square shape in plan, is provided with a wringer capable of pivoting about a vertical axis. of a corner of the tank and capable of occupying at least two active positions in each of which it extends as a whole parallel to one side of the tank, devices being provided to activate the wringer only in one direction only, so that when it occupies one position the laundry can be fed directly to it from the tub, while when in the other position the laundry can be fed directly from the tub. wringer in the tank.

   The invention can be implemented in different ways and an embodiment will be described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a general view of a washing machine according to the present invention.

   Fig. 2 is a detail elevational view, partially in section, of the pulley motor of the washer,

Fig. 4 is a schematic view similar to FIG. 3 with the coupling in the engaged position, and
Fig. 5 is a schematic plan view of the machine showing the two positions of the wringer.

   In the embodiment which will be described below, the washing machine comprises a laundry tub 10 of approximately square shape in plan, housed in a casing 11 and provided in a side wall with a discoid pulsator 12 actuated by a electric motor 13 placed under the tank. a pulley 14 on the pulsator shaft is connected by a belt 15 to a pulley 16 freely mounted on the motor shaft. This latter pulley is coupled to the shaft by means of a one-way, inertia-actuated coupling, generally indicated at 17.

   This coupling can be any, but it is preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. A driving member 18 is rigidly fixed to the shaft 19 of the motor 13 by means of a countersunk screw 20. The driving member 18 has a flange carrying a coupling member 22 which is articulated on the member 18 by a rivet 23, so that it can oscillate about an axis parallel to the axis of the motor.

   As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the coupling member has essentially the form of an angled lever, the space between the two arms of which is filled so as to form a surface delimited by an arc concentric with the axis of the engine when the center of gravity of the coupling member lies on a line passing through the center of the pivot 23 and the axis of the motor, that is to say when the coupling member can rotate around its pivot and that a rotational movement is imparted to the motor, so that the coupling member is placed in a position determined by the centrifugal force.

   In Fig. 2, the pulley 16 which carries the belt transmission actuating the pulsator of the washing machine is not keyed to the motor shaft and can therefore rotate on the latter. It is retained on the shaft by an end collar 24. A coupling plate 25 is provided on the side of the pulley adjacent to the motor. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the plate 25 has six evenly spaced peripheral protrusions 26 and the outer ends of these protrusions curve perpendicularly towards the motor and parallel to the motor axis to form coupling dogs 27. Seen in Figs. 3 and 4 that these dogs are not tagential to the plate but are inclined on this tangent.

   Thus, when the engine is started in a clockwise direction, with respect to Figs. 3 and 4, the acceleration is considerable and the centrifugal force acting on the coupling member 22 is negligible so that its inertia causes it to oscillate counterclockwise around its pivot. 23 and one end of this member passes between two contiguous dogs to rest on the rear end 32 of one of the dogs, that is to say on the end closest to the motor axis. The other end 29 of the coupling member 22 meets the motor shaft which acts as a stop. As a result, the coupling is engaged and the motor operates the pulley through it.

   It is obvious that the driving torque exerted by the coupling plate on the member 22 is applied in such a direction as to prevent the latter from returning to its normal or rest position and that consequently the coupling remains engaged as long as engine torque is maintained. So that the coupling is only engaged if the motor is started in a clockwise direction, with respect to Figs. 3 and 4,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 a stop 30 is provided on the driving member 18 so as to prevent the coupling member from going clockwise (Fig. 3) beyond its normal or rest position. Therefore, if the driver 18 is turned on in a counterclockwise direction, the coupling member is simply pressed against its stop 30.

   In order to keep the coupling member pressed against its stop, it may be desirable to arrange it so that its center of gravity is slightly to the right (with respect to Fig. 3) of the passing line. by the centers of shaft 19 and pivot 23.

   If the coupling stops in the clutch position and the engine is then started in the opposite direction, the coupling member 22 disengages from the rear end 32 of the dog clutch. As soon as the end 28 of the coupling member 22 leaves the rear end of the dog clutch, its curved outer surface meets the inner side of the adjacent dog clutch and the member is immediately brought into its rest position shown in figure. Fig. 3.

   At its other end, the motor shaft also carries a free pulley
34 which may be coupled to the shaft by a similar one-way inertia coupling indicated generally at 35. Both couplings
17 and 35 are arranged so as to engage in opposite directions of rotation of the motor shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, the second pulley 34 is connected by a belt 36 to a pulley 37 mounted to rotate on a shaft 38 connected to the end of a flexible transmission 39.

  This transmission extends horizontally below the tank 10 and then curves from bottom to top in a corner of the casing to terminate at the level of the upper part of the tank near a corner thereof.

  In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the flexible transmission ends with an upwardly facing power take-off 40 to which a removable wringer 31 is connected. Obviously, if a permanently mounted motive power driven wringer is employed, the flexible transmission terminates in a vertical drive shaft suitable for operating the wringer.

   As shown in Fig. 1, there is provided at a suitable point of the casing 11 a reversing and stop switch 41 mounted in the circuit of the motor 13 in such a way that it can be stopped or made to turn in one or the other direction of rotation. Such a switch is the subject of the Applicant's English patent application No. 19668/54. Thus, when the motor 13 rotates in one direction, the coupling 17 is engaged so as to actuate the pulsator 12 for washing, while the other coupling 35 is disengaged so that the wringer is not actuated. By reversing the direction of rotation of the motor, you can stop the pulsator and activate the wringer.

   As shown in Fig. 1, an engine cooling fan 42 is placed between the coupling 17 and the engine. This fan is keyed on the motor shaft and carries an annular flange 43 facing outwards parallel to the axis of the motor shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, this flange 43 acts as a friction wheel by engaging a cooperating friction wheel 44 mounted on the shaft of a drain pump 45 intended to empty the tank.

   As described in the Belgian Patent? 506.640 of the Applicant, the outlet of the drain pump 45 can include a flexible pipe which can occupy a rest position where its end is closed by a fixed plug so as to prevent emptying of the tank except when desired. . According to another arrangement, the drain pump can play the role of a countershaft to which the end of the flexible transmission is fixed so that it can be actuated.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 by the same belt and pulleys each time the wringer is operated. The pulsator then remains stationary while the container is emptied.

   In the arrangement described, the wringer works only in one direction, for simplicity, in order to be able to use it for several purposes, it is mounted on its vertical PTO coupling 40 so that it can be rotated. around a vertical axis near the corner of the tank, to make it assume different operating positions. Thus, as shown schematically in FIG. 5, it can be placed along either of the two sides of the tank contiguous to its vertical mount. Accordingly, in the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 5, the wringer pulls the laundry from the tub, so that the laundry which has been washed in the tub can be passed directly to the wringer and placed on a tray or dipped in a rinsing tub.

   On the other hand, when it occupies the other position, shown in chain lines in FIG. 5, the laundry passes from the wringer to the tub, so that the rinsed laundry can be spun directly from the rinse tub.

  In addition, the wringer can still occupy other positions beyond the side of the machine.

   Preferably, the wringer is provided with a release device to allow the rollers to be released in order to be able to remove the laundry.

   The use of a motor-driven wringer rotating only in one direction considerably simplifies the construction as well as the operation. In particular, if a safety device is provided to stop the engine, or to loosen the rollers or to perform these two operations, when the user puts her hand in a place dangerously close to the rollers, there is no need to place this device only on one side of the wringer because the entrance to the latter is always on the same side.

   It will be understood that the power take-off can be used to operate a calender or ironing machine as well as a wringer.
