<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
grenages 13.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Thrusters for boats and watercraft
The present invention relates to marine propulsion devices for boats and craft of the type comprising a main propulsion engine, for example a combustion engine either piston or turbine, connected to the propeller by the in- via a transmission mechanism which comprises a clutch (hereinafter called the main clutch), and an auxiliary motor which can also be connected to the transmission shaft via a clutch (called ci - after auxiliary clutch) and transmit torque to the transmission shaft, for example to maneuver or move a boat at reduced speed when the main clutch is disengaged.
The auxiliary engine may be internal combustion and may have other uses than its employment as an auxiliary propulsion engine, or may be an engine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
electric or a generator motor which also serves to supply the electric force of the boat, these two forms having already been proposed.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved control mechanism for a marine propellant device of the type described above, which prevents damage in the event of incorrect operation of the clutches and generally meets the requirements of installations of the kind in question. question.
In a marine propulsion unit for boats or craft of the kind described, according to the present invention, the auxiliary clutch is hydraulically controlled, and the unit comprises a source of hydraulic pressure controlled by / or responsive to the rotational speed of the auxiliary motor. , to supply pressurized liquid for the control of the auxiliary clutch.
This automatically prevents the auxiliary motor from being connected to the propeller shaft when that motor is stopped.
Preferably, the source of hydraulic pressure is a hydraulic pump (referred to as the auxiliary motor pump in the following description) driven by the auxiliary motor to supply pressurized liquid to a pressure line (hereinafter referred to as the pressure line of the pressure line. (auxiliary clutch) and the power plant comprises a device sensitive to the pressure prevailing in this duct, which is so constructed and arranged that the auxiliary clutch can only be engaged when the auxiliary engine, and therefore the pump of the auxiliary motor, run at a speed equal to or greater than a predetermined speed.
Preferably, the propulsion device also comprises a second source of hydraulic pressure controlled by / or sensitive to the speed of rotation of the transmission shaft, and a device sensitive to the pressure of this source of pressure and arranged in such a manner. preventing the auxiliary clutch from being engaged if the pressure exceeds a relatively low predetermined value corresponding to a relatively low rotational speed

low of the propeller shaft.
Thus the clutch of the auxiliary motor is also prevented from engaging if the rotational speed of the propeller shaft is on; ' higher than a predetermined relatively low value.
In a preferred embodiment, the second source of pressure is a hydraulic pump (hereinafter referred to as the propeller pump) driven by the propeller shaft, while the pressure sensitive device is a valve arranged from the propeller. so as to prevent the passage of the pump fluid from the auxiliary motor to the auxiliary clutch when the rotational speed of the propeller shaft exceeds the low predetermined value.
In this embodiment, the pressure sensitive device may also include a stabilizer mechanism comprising a hydraulic connection which has the effect of substantially reducing the effective pressure of the second source as soon as the valve has opened to allow passage. fluid in the auxiliary clutch pressure line.
At least part of the flow from the pump driven by the propeller shaft is diverted to the main transmission mechanism for lubrication.
According to another preferred feature of the invention, the power plant comprises a device sensitive to pressing between the pump of the auxiliary motor and the auxiliary clutch, arranged to prevent the main clutch from engaging when the pressure prevailing in the pipe. of the auxiliary clutch exceeds a predetermined value, to ensure that the main clutch is disengaged when the auxiliary clutch is engaged.
Preferably, the main clutch is also hydraulically controlled, and the pressure sensitive device is a pressure sensitive valve and serves to prevent hydraulic fluid pressure from engaging the main clutch when the pressure in the pressure line. of the auxiliary clutch exceeds the predetermined value.
Only one clutch has been discussed above
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
main, but in many cases there will be two main clutches, the main motor driving the propeller shaft in one direction through one and in the other direction through the 'other, the control mechanism of the main clutches being arranged so that one or the other of the clutches can be engaged at any time.
The invention can be implemented in different ways; an embodiment thereof will be described by way of example with reference to the appended schematic drawing.
In this example, the propulsion device of the boat is of the two-propeller type, each propeller being driven by a separate motor, but for clarity of the drawing, only one of these propellers and a single motor have been shown. Each engine comprises a main engine 10 of the Diesel type entraining a propeller shaft 11 and a propeller 12 via a transmission 13 comprising a reverse gear mechanism. The transmission 13 comprises an input shaft 14 connected to the crankshaft of the main engine 10 and to which is rigidly fixed a disc 15 which constitutes a common driving element for two hydraulically controlled friction clutches which are generally designated by 16 and 17. .
Clutch 16, which is the "forward" main clutch which transmits torque from motor 10 to propeller 12 to move the boat forward, includes a driven clutch disc 18 mounted on a hub. 19 concentric with the shaft 14, this hub being rigidly connected to a pinion 20 which engages another pinion 21 mounted on a driven shaft 22. A second pinion 23 of the shaft 22 drives a pinion 24 integral with the shaft of propeller 11. An annular cylinder 25 comes into contact with the driven clutch disc 18 under the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in a chamber 26, into which the fluid is admitted by a radial bore 27 of the plate 15 and a bore 28 of the tree 14.
The chamber 26 is in constant communication with the return through a calibrated leakage orifice 29, so that the clutch automatically disengages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
only if the hydraulic fluid supply is interrupted.
Clutch 17, which constitutes the main reverse clutch between the main motor 10 and the propeller shaft is similar to the main forward clutch 16, and includes a driven clutch disc 30 mounted on a drive shaft. hub 31 rigidly connected to a pinion 32, driving pinion 23 via a free pinion 33. The supply of hydraulic fluid to control the main forward gear clutch 17 is effected by radial drilling 34 and an annular duct 35 in the shaft 14.
It can therefore be seen that depending on whether one or the other of the main clutches 16 or 17 is engaged, the main motor can drive the propeller 12 in the "forward" direction or in the "reverse" direction while, when both clutches are disengaged, the main motor is disengaged from the propeller shaft.
The hydraulic fluid which controls the main forward and reverse clutches 16 and 17 is supplied by a pump 40 of the gear type, which is driven directly by the crankshaft of the main motor 10. The output of this pump is supplied to the central inlet of a spool valve 41 and also to a spool control 42 which is operated by hand. Control 42 is actuated by a cam 43 connected to the "forward" - "reverse" lever of the boat (not shown) to connect the output of pump 40 to either end of distributor 41.
A slide 44 of the latter moves, as the case may be, towards one or the other side of the distributor and connects the outlet of the pump 40 to one of the two pipes 45 or 46 which communicate respectively with the pipes 28 and 35 leading to clutches 16 and 17 via an isolation valve 47 from the main clutches. The isolation valve operates automatically to cut off the hydraulic fluid supply to the two main clutches 16 'and 17 under certain operating conditions.
The propulsion device also includes an engine
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
auxiliary 50 which can drive the transmission shaft via an auxiliary clutch 51 to maneuver or move the boat at idle. The auxiliary motor can be of any type, for example an internal combustion engine or an electric motor or the engine of a generator set, and in this example an electric motor of the reversible type has been chosen, that is, that is, a motor capable of rotating in both directions.
The output shaft 52 of the auxiliary motor drives a clutch plate 53, while a driven clutch disc 54 is connected to the output shaft 55 of the clutch which drives the transmission shaft 22.L The auxiliary clutch 51 also comprises an annular cylinder 56 connected to a pressure disc 48 by rocker arms 49, the pressure disc being constantly pushed towards the clutch plate 53 by springs 36. The jack 56 is pushed by springs 37 in the desired direction to disengage the clutch and is controlled by the hydraulic fluid pressure prevailing in a chamber 57 behind the piston or cylinder, the chamber being supplied with hydraulic fluid by a radial borehole 58 and a conduit 59 drilled in the chamber. 'tree 52.
When the pressure reaches a predetermined value in the chamber 57, the clutch disc 48 moves to the clutch plate 53 and the clutch engages.
The auxiliary clutch control hydraulic fluid 51 is supplied by a reversible pump 60 of the auxiliary motor, of the gear type, which is driven directly by the auxiliary motor and supplies fluid under pressure always in the same direction, without take into account its direction of rotation. The output of the pump 60 of the auxiliary motor communicates with a lumen 61 in the wall of the pressure-sensitive distributor 62. This distributor 62 comprises a spool 63 engaged on one side by a spring 64 and subjected on the other to pressure. ambient pressure of the chamber 65 connected to the outlet of a propeller pump 66, this pump 66 being driven by the propeller shaft 11, and placed in the gearbox

graining 13.
The output of the propeller pump 66 is also connected by the chamber 65 to a pressure valve 67 which has a small section leakage bypass then to several nozzles through which the fluid is sprayed or projected onto the gears of the transmission. 13 to lubricate them. As the propeller pump 66 rotates with the propeller shaft 11, the transmission gears 13 are suitably lubricated even if the two main clutches 16 and 17 are disengaged and the main engine stopped, for example when the boat is towed.
The lumen 61 in the wall of the distributor 62 communicates through a groove of the spool 63 with an exhaust port 68, and the spool 63 covers the exhaust port 68 with a ring 69 as it moves in the direction of compression of the valve. spring 64 when the pressure increases in the chamber 65. The exhaust port 68 is connected to a pressure line 70 which constitutes the pressure line of the auxiliary clutch, and this line is also connected to the chamber comprising the spring 64 to stabilize the movement of the spool 63 and prevent the lumen 68 from being covered when the pressure subsequently increases in the chamber 65 as the propeller shaft 11 is driven by the auxiliary motor to transmit power.
The pressure line 70 of the auxiliary clutch passes through the isolation valve 47 of the main clutches, to go to a distributor 71 controlled by hand, containing a simple spool 72 engaged on one side by a spring 73 and controlled from the other by a cam 74 connected by a set of bevel gears 75 to a hand control lever 76 associated with the control mechanism 77 by means of which the auxiliary motor 50 is started and controlled. The exhaust port 78 of the distributor 71 is connected to the passage 59 which communicates with the pressure chamber 57 of the auxiliary clutch 51.
It is clear that as long as the pressure in the chamber 65 (which depends on the speed of rotation of the propeller pump 66) A
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
exceeds a predetermined value, corresponding to a relatively low predetermined speed of the propeller shaft 11, the output of the pump 60 of the auxiliary motor does not pass through the pressure line 70 of the auxiliary clutch, and in these con- It is impossible to engage the auxiliary clutch 51.
In addition, unless the pump 60 of the auxiliary motor is running, that is to say unless the auxiliary motor is running at a speed greater than a predetermined minimum, it is also impossible to engage the auxiliary clutch. 51, since there is no pressure available to control the clutch. The risk of causing damage to the auxiliary motor due to the high ratio of transmission 13 is therefore eliminated.
The main clutch isolation valve 47 contains a single spool 80 driven on one side by a weak spring 81 and subjected on the other side to the pressure in the pressure line 70 of the auxiliary clutch. spring 81 pushes the spool to the other side of the cylinder chamber so that lines 45 and 46 of the main clutches are in direct communication with lines 28 and 35. If the pressure exceeds a predetermined value in line 70 of the auxiliary clutch, the spool 80 compresses the spring 81 and moves into the position shown in the drawing, in which the two pressure lines 46 and 45 of the main clutches are closed. Under these conditions, the two main clutches 16 and 17 are disengaged.
The isolation valve 47 of the main clutches is also connected to the corresponding valve (not shown) belonging to the second propulsion unit of the boat and to the second propeller.
For this purpose, the end of the valve 47 opposite the spring 81 contains an independent spool 82 which can slide in the cylinder of the valve, the chamber formed by the end of the spool and cell of the cylinder is connected by the lines 83 and 84 in series with the pressure line of the auxiliary clutch (corresponding to the pressure line 70 of the auxiliary clutch of the group

shown) belonging to the second propulsion group.
It is clear that the pressure lines 45 and 46 of the main forward and reverse clutches will both be plugged as a result of an increase in pressure in the line 70 of the auxiliary clutch, or upon following a pressure increase in the lines 83 and 84 of the second auxiliary clutch, so that the main clutches 16 and 17 are disengaged if one of the lines is under pressure.
The part of the pressure line 70 of the auxiliary clutch between the isolation valve 47 of the main clutches and the control valve 71 is also in series, as shown schematically by the broken lines 85, so that the pressure acts on a free spool (not shown) corresponding to spool 82, and belonging to the second propulsion unit, so that the main clutches of the second propulsion unit are also disengaged if the pressure in one of the pressure lines of the auxiliary clutches exceeds a predetermined value .
The profile of the cam 74 is such that when the lever 76 is moved slightly to start the auxiliary motor 50, the spool 72 moves slightly and the intake of pressure from the line 70 through the port 78 is cut off. The clutch 51 therefore remains disengaged but the auxiliary motor 50 starts up and the pump 60 supplies pressurized fluid to the distributor 62 through the port 61 This pressurized fluid only reaches the pressure duct 70 if the propeller 12 and therefore the pump 66 rotates at a speed suitable for the clutch of the auxiliary motor.
When the rotational speed of the transmission shaft drops to the correct predetermined value, the spool moves under the influence of the spring 64 and pressurized fluid is then admitted into the pressure line 70, thereby immediately and automatically disengaging the valves. main clutches 16 and 17 if they have not already been disengaged by control 42.
The invention therefore prevents the clutch 51 of the auxiliary motor from engaging as long as the two main clutches 16 and 17
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
are not disengaged, and as long as the two propeller shafts 11 and the auxiliary motor 50 do not rotate at suitable speeds, thus avoiding any risk of damage to the transmission or to the auxiliary motor which would occur if the clutch Auxiliary clutch when the rotational speed is not appropriate.
