<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Hais si l'on excède.
La figure 1 montre schématiquement le circuit hydraulique de freinage d'un véhicule automobile muni du dispositif selon l'invention;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
La figure 2 montre une réalisation du dispos@ suivant l'invention;
La figure 3 montre une variante;

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Device applicable to the brake circuit of motor vehicles for taking up the play between the brake shoes and the brake drum due to the wear of the shoe linings
This invention relates to a device applicable to the circuit of motor vehicle brakes to take up the play occurring between the jaws and the brake drum as a result of the wear of the linings including; the jaws are punished.
It is known that it is necessary to mechanically adjust the clearance between the jaws and the drums of motor vehicles, as the shoe linings wear, in order to avoid any excessive stroke of the jaws. the brake pedal before the shoes are applied

to the drums. The apparatus according to the invention makes it possible to maintain this play automatically constant until complete wear of the linings.
The invention aims to this end a device applicable to the circuit of motor vehicle brakes, capable of compensating for the play occurring between the brake shoes and the brake drum as a result of the wear of the brake shoe linings, comprising a mounted cylinder. in series on the braking fluid flow pipe from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders, a floating element movable in this cylinder, subdividing the brake circuit into a primary circuit comprising the master cylinder and a secondary circuit comprising the cylinders wheels, this floating element having a thrust face on which acts the pressurized fluid of the primary circuit ... coming from the master cylinder, and a reaction face acting on the fluid of the secondary circuit flowing towards the cylinders of the wheels,

According to one embodiment of the invention, the means for connecting the primary circuit to the secondary circuit with a view to transferring part of the fluid contained in the primary circuit to the secondary circuit consist of a floating element itself, an elastic element acting on

the pressure of the secondary circuit and a communication light between the secondary circuit and the primary circuit) closed to the rest position of the floating element, this light being discovered by the floating element to ensure the passage of the fluid of the circuit primary to the secondary when, by the effect of increasing the clearance between the jaws and the drum due to the wear of the jaw linings, this floating element, under the action of the primary pressure, can move away from the 'rest stop in a larger measure compared to normal playing conditions, against the action of this elastic element.
In addition, the means capable of ensuring the expansion of the fluid of the secondary circuit put the secondary circuit in communication with the primary circuit to transfer part of the fluid contained in the secondary circuit to the primary circuit when the pressure in this secondary circuit. daire increases beyond the predetermined value, and include a valve element, an elastic member acting on this valve element and a communication lumen between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit, closed in the rest position of the valve. valve element. On this valve element, moreover, in the direction opposite to the elastic member, the pressure of the secondary circuit acts, which, when it exceeds said predetermined value, ensures the displacement of the valve element against the pressure. elastic organ to discover light.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the device further comprises a second stop for the floating element, against which the floating element abuts after the jaws have completed their stroke of approach to the drum; of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in addition, the means for transferring part of the fluid contained in the primary circuit to the secondary circuit comprise a piston valve element movable in a cylinder, a communication lumen between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit, closed in the rest position and during the approach stroke of the jaws of the drum by the piston valve element, and an elastic member acting on one face of this piston, the pressure of the primary circuit acting on a part of the other face of this piston. piston,
the piston valve moving so as to discover the lumen to ensure the passage of the fluid from the primary circuit to the secondary circuit when the pressure in the primary circuit rises beyond a predetermined value.
On the other hand, the means capable of ensuring the expansion of the fluid of the secondary circuit allow part of this fluid to pass from the secondary circuit to the primary circuit, when the pressure of the secondary circuit increases beyond a limit value. predetermined and are constituted by the same piston valve and the same lumen described above, the pressure of the secondary circuit acting on the other part of the face. this piston, and moving the piston valve against the elastic member in order to open the port and 'ensure the passage of fluid from the secondary circuit to the primary circuit.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the means for ensuring the expansion of the secondary circuit consist of a movable wall of the cylinder itself, on one face of which the pressure of the secondary circuit acts, an elastic reaction element and the pressure of the primary circuit acting on the other side.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to the invention the clearance occurring between the brake shoes and the drum by the effect of the wear of the linings provided on these jaws is taken up by the fact that the pistons of the wheel cylinders are kept apart from one another. to a certain extent by the fluid of the secondary circuit compressed in the cylinders under the pressure of the return springs of the jaws, this distance increasing as the linings wear, the device according to the invention making it possible to transfer from the primary circuit to the secondary circuit a certain quantity of fluid which moves these pistons further apart as the linings wear out.
The empty race. initial necessary between the jaws and the drums is obtained by an axial displacement of the floating element which, in a certain way, increases the dimensions of the primary circuit at the expense of the secondary circuit.
As a result of the hydraulic discharge pressure, the floating member, in effect, is displaced axially and therefore displaces the 'quantity' of fluid required to bring the jaws into contact with the drums at their empty stroke.
To prevent the brakes from jamming in their inactive position, the device comprises a safety valve discharging the fluid from the secondary circuit (pipes connecting the device to the wheel cylinders and in the cylinders themselves) into the primary circuit ( including the master cylinder) at a defined residual pressure. This pressure must be greater than that given
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by the maximum load by the jaw return springs on the liquid trapped in the secondary circuit. The maximum residual pressure can be practically
4 kg / cm2 approximately.
Since the linings are new and the load on the jaw return springs is minimum, the residual pressure can be around 3 kg / cm2. The load therefore increases gradually as the linings wear and the jaw opening increases. In a cylinder, wheels having a diameter of
25.4 mm (section 5 cm2) a residual pressure of 4 kg / cm2 represents a load of 20 kg of the return springs, a residual pressure of 3 kg / cm2 representing a load of
15 kg of the respective springs.
Under the load conditions specified above the take-up stroke does not undergo any variation from a residual pressure lower than the predetermined maximum of 4 kg / cm2. Hate if one exceeds.
4 kg / cm2 of residual pressure due to the increase in the load on the return springs above 20 kg or by Il 1 following an increase in the volume of the fluid due to heating, the safety valve relieves the pressure. respective overpressure. In short, the take-up stroke is independent of the load of the jaw return springs within predetermined limits.

The chamber 31, delimited by the floating element 29 , the inner surface of the cylinder and the outer surface of the tubular section 25, is communicated with an inner cavity 33

When the discharge pressure ceases, the compound piston 18 is pushed by the spring 22 to the left until the gasket 23 is pressed again against the flange 24. This interrupts the connection between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit.
Successively, the floating internent 29 is moved again against its right-hand stop shoulder by the reflux of the fluid under the pressure created by the load of the return springs of the jaws.
The jaws are then supported, via the pistons of the wheel cylinders, against the residual pressure of the fluid trapped in the secondary circuit. The greater the wear of the linings, the greater the pressure by which the jaw return springs are pulled, and the greater the residual pressure in the secondary circuit. When this pressure on the valve reaches a given value, it overcomes the axial pressure of the reaction spring 22, the valve opening to relieve the overpressure.
It should be noted, as mentioned above, that the wear of the linings of the brake shoes is taken up by the axial displacement of the floating ring 29, independently of the value of the residual pressure, up to 'to the predetermined limit at which the valve opens to discharge the liquid.
The particular advantage of this dual-control valve system consists in that, since the primary circuit is put in positive communication with the secondary circuit on each braking, any thermal expansion of the fluid contained in the secondary circuit is dissipated by

,, the fresh fluid from the primary circuit, which avoids any possible blocking of the brakes, the valve which is controlled only by the residual pressure is not sufficient to ensure in any case the release of the brakes in these thermal conditions.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 3 does not have the dual control of the valve according to the previous embodiment, while retaining the system for catching up the wear of the linings using a floating elastic ring. . In fact, the valve opens in this case only to discharge the residual overpressure in the secondary circuit and not for the passage of fluid from the primary circuit to the secondary circuit.

According to the first embodiment shown in Figure 3, the floating ring 29 is movable on a sleeve 34 embedded in a cavity hollowed out in an annular projection 35, with which the plug 15. The sleeve 34 is provided with a flange 36, in which are drilled the holes 37, as well as a seat 38 to guide a gasket 39 carried by the piston 40. The guide seat is further drilled with radial holes 41, the sleeve 34 being drilled with radial holes 42 covered, in the rest position, by the floating element 29.
As mentioned above, the floating element is movable on the sleeve 34 and is in contact, in its rest position, with the flange 36 carried by this sleeve 34.
Moreover, the floating element is pushed by a spring 43 via a ring 44 which can also be displaced on the sleeve 34. At its opposite end, the spring bears against a shoulder formed by the plug 15, and it is guided.

on the annular protrusion 35. The protrusion 35 is hollow on the inside and communicates with the inside of the sleeve 34.
Its walls are further pierced with holes 45 putting in communication the chamber 49, delimited by the internal surface of the cylinder, the ring 44 and the plug, with the cavity inside the annular projection 35 in communication with the hole. threaded plug for the delivery of fluid to the wheel cylinders.
The valve element consists, in this embodiment, of a piston 40 with two diameters, carrying at one end a gasket 39 intended to close, in the rest position, the holes 41 in which the seat 38 is drilled for guiding. of this garnish. The piston valve element is hollow on the inside, its cavity 46 communicating, through the openings 47, with the chamber delimited by the internal wall of the cylinder, the circular crown provided in the passage zone of a diameter to the other of the piston 40 and the perforated flange 36.
When the master cylinder operates the delivery of the brake fluid through the threaded hole 13, this fluid acts through the holes 47 and 37 against the floating element 29, against the spring 43, and displaces the volume of liquid necessary for the empty stroke between jaws and drums and for braking.
The fluid delivery communication between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit is established by the holes 42, which are only discovered by the floating element 29 when a greater displacement of fluid is made necessary by the wear of the linings of the brake shoes during or the initial evacuation of the installation. These holes 42 are kept constantly covered by the floating element 29 under the pressure of the spring.

43, the secondary circuit thus being kept (normally) isolated from the primary circuit.
The operation of the variant shown in Figure 4 is identical in many respects to that of the variant shown in Figure 3, except for the elimination of the relief valve, which is replaced by a catch-up piston 48 which maintains the pressure. residual pressure in the secondary circuit under the load of the reaction spring 22, normally keeping this piston 48 pressed against the plug 14. In this embodiment, the floating element 29 is also provided, on one side of which is applied, by the holes '37' drilled in the flange 36 with which the piston 48 is provided, the pressure of the secondary circuit, on the other face the pressure produced by the spring 43 is applied by the intermediary of the movable ring 44.
As the residual pressure increases, the piston moves to the opposite end of the cylinder and remains moved as necessary to allow expansion of the fluid in the secondary circuit. '
The secondary circuit is therefore kept normally constantly isolated from the primary circuit; the passage between the two circuits is only open for the discharge of the fluid from the primary or secondary circuit through the holes 42, initially for the discharge and then for the discharge of the larger volume required to compensate for the wear of the linings jaws, as already indicated for the solution according to Figure 3.
