 EMI1.1

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  1 après qu'une couche d'alliage nickel-phosphore a été déposée par voie chimique sur sa face supérieure ainsi que sur les paroi latérales dos deux trous qui y ont été pratiqués pour constitue! une paire de bornes ; la fig. 4 est une section verticale de la plaque, vue dans le sens des flèches passant par la ligne   4-4   de la fig. 3; la fige 5 est une vue en plan-de la plaque de la   fig.3   dont la couche superficielle du revêtement-en alliage est masquée par une couche en matière organique électriquement isolante, laquelle présente un découpage déterminant le contour d'une rosis- tance et d'une capacité situées entre les deux bornes; la fig. 6 est une coupe verticale de la plaque, vue dans le sens des flèches passant par la ligne 6-6 de la fig. 5;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 EMI7.2

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

      sont constituées d'un alliage de nickel à 5 à 11% de phosphore.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<tb>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 14>

   Ce procédé   de- nickelage   chimique peut servir d'une manière générale. au. nickelage   dans\le   cas   d'un   grand nombre de pièces non-métalliques, parmi lesquelles on peut citer: les matières plastiques naturelles ou synthétiques, le bois, le quartz, le verre, les matières céramiques,   este;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 16>

Le fonctionnement du bain chimique d'initiation de nickclage peut avoir lieu dans des conditions de pH extrêmement variables;

 the 1; e - ieuweerme W ,. General era, the nickel plating of non-metallic objects and, more particularly, processes and baths for the chemical nickel plating of such objects. More specifically, it relates to printed electrical circuits as well as their manufacturing process.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   According to known methods of manufacturing printed electrical circuits, a layer of adhesive material (of a resin-rubber-based type) is applied to a previously incised and perforated plate - of a laminated material formed of a resin. thermoset consisting essentially of phenol-formaldehyde condensation products, with textile reinforcement, and on this adhesive layer a thin coating of metallic silver is applied (using a silk screen to obtain the desired model), by means of an aqueous solution of a silver salt and a reducing agent.

   After which hollow rivets and thimbles are fixed in the holes previously drilled in the plate, so as to constitute terminals for the elements of the printed electrical circuit.

   This process has several serious drawbacks: (a) The silver layer does not always adhere perfectly.

   (b) Rivets and thimbles serving as poles do not always ensure good electrical contact with the elements of the circuit and require, moreover, an assembly operation; (c) The silver ions migrate through the adhesive layer as well as the insulating material plate after a certain time, adversely affecting the dielectric properties of the insulating plate, to the point of rendering the capacitance elements inoperative. printed electrical circuit.

   The present invention makes it possible to avoid these drawbacks,. For this purpose it relates to a new type of printed electrical circuit, not exhibiting the aforementioned defects, the manufacture of which is both simplified and improved, and which exhibits the maximum of. security of connections between

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 elements this connections not being susceptible to any variation of electrical characteristics.

   The printed electrical circuit according to the invention does not require the use of silver or any other expensive material, the elements constituting it, including the terminals, being made of a nickel alloy containing 5-11% phosphorus.

   The invention also relates to the process for manufacturing these printed circuits on an insulating support, the process consisting in coating this support with a layer of nickel, applying over this layer of nickel a layer masking certain zones and perforated in accordance with the drawing of an electrical circuit that is to be obtained, the unmasked areas of the nickel layer are covered with a layer of copper, the masking layer is removed and the nickel discovered under this layer is removed, leaving intimately fixed on the support the electrical circuit formed by the superposition of layers of nickel and copper. The respective deposits of nickel and copper are carried out, the first by a particular process of chemical nic kelage and the second by electroplating.

   The invention therefore finally relates to said particular chemical nickel plating process, which is moreover applicable to not all cases of nickel plating of a surface / metal, this process consisting of a nickel plating process. chemical of a non-metallic solid surface, of the type consisting in preparing said.

   surface by incorporating starter seeds therein, then in immersing said surface in a chemical nickel plating bath, characterized in that the surface is first immersed in an initiation bath containing 0.07 to 0.10 mpl of nickel ions, hypophosphite ions at a ratio of 0.45 to 0.55 with nickel ions, acetate ions at a ratio of 1.45 to 1.55 with nickel ions,

   to 0.030 015-mpl of ammonium ions, and 0.015 to 0.030 mpl of ortho-boric acid - and at a pE of 5.5 to 6.0 then secondly in a conventional chemical nickel plating bath until formation of d 'a continuous layer of nickel.

   The invention will be better understood by referring to the following example of an application mode, this example corresponding to the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an insulating plate previously incised and pierced with two holes, the plate which cônsti kills the support element of a printed electric circuit; fig. 2 is a vertical section of the plate, seen in the direction of the arrows passing through the line 2-2 of the .fig, 1 in fig. 3 is a plan view of the plate of FIG.

   9 after dissolution and removal of the uncovered area of the alloy layer and, consequently, the electrical printing circuit completed; fig. 12 is a vertical section of the completed electric printing circuit, seen in the direction of the arrows passing through the line 12-12 of FIG. 11:
In figures 2, 4 6 8, 10 and 12, the thickness of the plate, layers, etc., has been greatly exaggerated and it is the same, in figures 5, 7, 9 and 11 for the thickness of the contours of resistance and capacity - in order to facilitate understanding of desertion.

   Referring to the drawing, the construction and arrangement of the printed electrical circuit will easily be understood from the following description of the process by which this circuit is established; Note, however, that in Figures 11 and 12, the fully assembled printed electrical circuit 20 comprises an insulating plate 21 carrying on its front surface a printed circuit consisting of a resistor R and a capacitor
C mounted in parallel between the two electrical terminals Tl and
T2.

   The parallel connection of the R and C elements of the circuit does not

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 they have no particular meaning and / are shown only by way of example, just as the circuit elements' normally carried by the rear face of the insulating plate 21 are not shown in the drawing to simplify the description. 'In fact the invention relates to the structure of the printed electrical circuit, its manufacturing process, and not its composition, which may be any, for example, such as those recently used for various electrical devices, such as radios, televisions, control panels, etc. ..

   If we then consider the manufacturing process of the printed circuit 20, and with reference to Figures 1 and 2, we first prepare an insulating plate incised and perforated 21 in laminated material, formed of a thermoset resin consisting for example , in phenol-formaldehyde condensation products with textile reinforcement.

   As shown, the plate 21 has a substantially rectangular shape and is pierced right through with two holes 22 located at a certain distance from each other, it being understood that the thickness of the plate is sufficient. so that it can serve as a support piece.

   The front surface of the plate 21 as well as the lateral surfaces of the holes 22 are then subjected to a stripping operation, which may include a treatment with a sanding, with a jet of water vapor, with a brush, by grinding, buffering. , abrasion, chemical attack, etc., in order to remove the surface film and thus prevent any possibility of polarization of the etched surfaces. This stage of the treatment gives the surface the desired roughness, freeing the plate 21 of any thin resinous layer.

   The free surfaces of the plate 21 can be subjected, for example, to the action of a jet of steam.

   Plate 21 is then rinsed with tap water, then passed for approximately 30 seconds in a 10% diisulfuric acid pickling bath after which plate 21 is again rinsed previously retort.

   The plate 21 is then subjected to chemical nickel plating by means of a nickel plating bath maintained at about 930-9900 for the time necessary to obtain a nickel deposit of the desired thickness - 4 minutes being, in general, a sufficient time. - This chemical nickel plating bath ensuring a coating rate of approximately 22.5 to 25 microns per hour.

   Although both of the chemical nickel baths described above give complete satisfaction for the performance of chemical nickel plating on properly prepared surfaces of the plate 21, the first formula described, based on of malic and succinic acid is preferable, since the adhesion qualities of nickel are considerably improved, if use is made of this bath.

   The process described above for chemical nickel plating on the surface of a non-metallic body is moreover the subject of prior patents by the Applicant.

   After the last aforementioned chemical nickel plating stage, the plate 21 is placed in an oven and subjected to baking at approximately 162 ° C. for approximately 30 minutes, so as to dry it and to degas it completely.

   At this stage of operations, the previously prepared surface of the plate 21 carries - as indicated in Figures 3 and 4 - the nickel layers 23 and 24 which have been chemically deposited thereon, the layer 23 covering the front surface of the plate 21 and the layers 24 covering the side surfaces of the holes 22 which have been made in the plate 21, the set of layers 23 and 24 now forming an integral part of the mentioned surfaces having received the indicated preliminary preparation and adhering to it in an intimate way. In the foregoing description, layers 23 and 24 have been given as formed entirely of nickel, whereas, in reality, they

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

      are made of a nickel alloy with 5 to 11% phosphorus.

  In other words, the chemical nickel plating process automatically and essentially results in the covering of the prepared surfaces by means of the layers 23 and 24 formed of the mentioned nickel-phosphorus alloy. Consequently, these layers 23 and 24 will henceforth be referred to as “alloy layers”, it being understood that the alloy in question is that of nickel-phosphorus mentioned,. capitulating to the above, the mentioned surfaces of the plate 21 undergo a preparation so as to make them rough and non-polarizable; then, by immersing the plate 21 in an aqueous solution of palladium chloride, very small amounts of palladium chloride adhere to the prepared surfaces mentioned.

   Then, when the plate 21 is immersed in a reducing solution that these small amounts of palladium chloride are reduced to the state of metallic palladium, so that on the fresh unpolarized surfaces, tiny particles of metallic palladium are regularly dispersed. When, in the course of the following operation, the plate 21 is forced into the chemical aqueous bath intended to cause the initiation of nickel plating, these particles of palladium become coated with alloy.

   Then, by the subsequent operation, when the plate is soaked in the aqueous bath of chemical nickel plating, the alloy is deposited on these particles, which act as seeds, so that layers are formed. thin 23 and 24 of continuous appearance on the fresh unpolarized surfaces of the plate 21, the latter having, with these surfaces, an intimate and tenacious bond.

   The front surface of the plate 21 is then prepared for the electroplating operation; so more

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 Specifically, a layer of organic material 25 forming an electrical insulator is deposited, which masks the layer covered with the alloy 23, using the usual silk screen technique, and using the organic materials usually used in such cases, which are insoluble in water as well as in acidic aqueous solutions, but which are soluble in organic solvents.

   For example, the enamel usually employed to mask surfaces in silk screen techniques is insoluble in water and in aqueous acid solutions, but is readily soluble in methyl ethyl ketone.
More precisely, the masking layer is put on. it is placed through the silk screen, so as to define and delimit on the alloy layer 23 the contours of the elements of the electrical circuit as they appear in the printed electrical circuit.

  For example, the masking layer can delimit the contours of the resistor R and of the capacitor C, connected in parallel between the terminals T1 and T2, as can be seen in FIGS. 5 and 6.

   After layer 25 has been placed over alloy layer 23, by standard silk screen technique, it undergoes appropriate drying; after which the exposed surfaces of the alloy layer 23 are duly cleaned, then the plate 21 is inserted into an electroplating circuit of the current type, comprising a copper electrode and a copper bath, and it is subjected to the usual operations do electroplating.

  More specifically, the alloy layer 23 is first subjected for 30 to 60 seconds to a reverse current in order to cause its activation, the alloy layer 23 constituting the same. 'anode and the copper electrode constituting the cathode.

  After this activation, the alloy layer 23 is subjected to a direct current according to current practice, said layer

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 of alloy 23 forming the cathode and the copper electrode constituting the anode.

   Although a common cyanide type galvano-plastic bath can be used by lion, an even more advantageous bath formulation is given below because it provides a layer of copper which adheres in an extremely tenacious manner. to the alloy layer, as will be specified in more detail below, this electroplating bath being formed from an aqueous solution having the following approximate composition:

It will be noted in passing that such an electroplating bath, as soon as prepared, must be filtered to rid it of all sediment; as for "Petrowet R", it is a wetting product produced by the firm Du Pont, which can be substituted by other equivalent wetting agents.

   During the electroplating stage, a current density varying between 2 and 7 amperes per dm2 (at 0.7 to 2 volts) can be used by subjecting the bath to constant agitation.

   At this time of operations, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, the plate 21 is covered with copper layers 26 and 27 on the exposed areas of the surface of the alloy layers 23 and 24 respectively on the front surface. of the plate and on the side surfaces of the holes, these copper layers 26 and 27 being intimately integrated with each other and in perfect contact with the alloy layers 23 and 24. Accordingly, the copper layer 26 defines the resistance R and the capacitance C, while the copper layers 27, together with the layers

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

   of alloy-24, define the terminals T1 and T2.

   The layer 25 which served to mask part of the surfaces is dissolved and then removed, using a suitable solvent, such as, for example, methyl ethyl ketone.
At this moment, the contours of the resistance R and of the capacitor c stand out in relief with respect to the alloy layer 23, as can be seen in FIGS. 9 ot 10
The exposed areas of the alloy layer 23 are then dissolved and removed from the front surface of the plate.
21, by suitable washing with a mineral acid, for example 50% nitric acid, 50% aqua regia or a mixture of 2 parts sulfuric acid 1 part acid nitric acid and 1/4 part water.

   Finally, the plate 21 can be cut at will to present the desired shape at the time of its insertion into the assembly of the electrical circuit, provided that it is necessary to depart from the initial rectangular configuration of the plate 21.

   At this stage of operations, the printed electrical circuit is established, as shown in Figures 11 and 12, it being understood that the terminals T1 and T2 include all of the. residual part of the alloy layers 24 as well as the copper layers 25 and 27, while the elements R and C of the circuit comprise the whole of the alloy layer 23 and the copper layer 26. Dc plus, the elements R and C of the circuit are connected in parallel between the terminals T1 and T2, which are moreover held in place in a manner strongly anchored in the holes 22 drilled in the insulating plate 21.

   In the printed electrical circuit 20 when completed, the R and C elements are firmly anchored on the front surface

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 do the insulating plate 21 and integrate perfectly with the terminals T1 and T2, thus forming an assembly representing an electrical circuit endowed with pre-fixed electrical characteristics and perfect stability during its useful life of operation, which is long.

   Furthermore, it is easy to understand that all the circuit elements which would be carried by the rear face of the insulating plate 21 would be established at the same time as the circuit elements R and C located on the front face of the insulating plate 21, as described above, and that any connection required between the circuit elements carried respectively by the rear and front faces of the insulating plate 21 necessarily pass through the terminals T1, T2, etc. so that the interconnected circuit elements carried by the respective faces of the insulating plate 21 are entirely joined by the terminals T1, T2, etc.

   In the example given above, the chemical nickel plating process has been described as a stage of the manufacturing process of a printed electrical circuit and there is no doubt that this process is ideally suited for this purpose. process, but it is of course understood that its application is not exclusively limited to this process.

   This chemical nickel plating process can be used in general. at. nickel plating in the case of a large number of non-metallic parts, among which there may be mentioned: natural or synthetic plastics, wood, quartz, glass, ceramic materials, este;

   ..In addition, since the nickel-plating initiation bath which has been described is employed at room temperature, synthetic plastics may belong to the class of thermosetting (phenol-aldehyde resins, polyalcohol-acid resins. phthalic rsins urea-formaldehyde, etc.) or to the class of thermo

 <Desc / Clms Page number 15>

 plastics (vinyl polymers, styrofoam resin, cel lulosic derivative products based on casein, super-polyamides, polyacrylates, etc.).

   If we consider more especially the aqueous chemical nickel initiation bath, it should be noted that if it is correct that the composition indicated above constitutes an optimum, the composition offered is as follows:
1. Nickel ions - their absolute concentration should remain within the limits of 0.07 to 0.10 moles per liter.

   2. Hypophosphito ions - the ratio of nickel to hypophosphito ions should remain between approximately 0.45 ot 0.55. '
3. Acetate ions - the ratio of nickel ions to acetate ions should remain between approximately 1.45 and 1.55
4. Ammonium ions - their absolute concentration should remain within the approximate limits of 0.015 to 0.030 moles per liter. ,
5. Ortho-boric acid - its absolute concentration should remain within the approximate limits of 0.015 to 0.030 moles per liter.

   6. pH - to be adjusted within the limits of 5.5 to 6.0, making use of sodium bicarbonate or sulfuric acid as appropriate.

   In preparing the nickcla go initiation bath, it is very advantageous to use nickel hypophosphite, since a ratio of 0.5 is automatically established between nickel ions and hypophosphite ions; but use can also be made of other soluble nickel salts (nickel sulphate, nickel chloride, etc.) used in conjunction with other soluble hypophosphites (sodium hypophosphite, calcium hypophosphite, potassium hypophosphite, etc.). ).

 <Desc / Clms Page number 16>

   Similarly, ammonium ions can originate from a wide variety of soluble ammonium compounds (ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, ammonium hydroxide, etc.), as it must be considered the ammonium radical which is useful as a weak alkali to neutralize boric acid, thereby forming a buffering agent whose activity is manifested in the desired pH region.

   Similarly, acetate ions can be derived from a wide variety of soluble acetates (calcium acetate, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, acetic acid, etc.) since it must be considered that in the aqueous bath the acetate acts not. only as a buffer (avoiding a significant decrease in pH while the mechanism:

   reduction of the nickel ion - oxidation of the hypophosphite ion), but also by its moderate uplifting action (slightly accelerating the appearance of nickel plating or initiation '
There are a number of other soluble ortho-borates besides ortho-boriquo acid which can be used for the preparation of the initiation bath, but the choice between them is not an essential element, as the ortho-bora ions hydrolyze immediately in aqueous solution:

 . by forming exactly the same borate ions as those provided by ortho-boric acid in aqueous solution:

 EMI16.2

However, in the aqueous bath, boric acid also acts as a buffering agent, and its concentration must remain low, because this buffering action increases with dilution in the area mentioned.

   The chemical initiation bath of nickel plating, the analysis of which has been given, has been specially established to be / at room temperature or at a temperature very close to it (21

 at 24 ° C and it becomes thermally unstable at significantly higher temperatures, it being understood that the highest acceptable temperature is approximately 50 ° C.

   On the other hand, when the temperature is allowed to drop below the ambient temperature, the nickel plating or initiation rate decreases quite appreciably, the lowest temperature still acceptable being 10 c if one wants to remain in the conditions of the practice.

   The relationships between temperatures and coating rates are approximately as follows:

The operation of the nickel-plating initiation chemical bath can take place under extremely variable pH conditions;

   but the stability of the bath decreases when the pH is high, while the rate of initiation decreases when the pH is low. Also, in the operating zone with pH ranging from 5.0 to 12.0 it is recommended to stay strictly between the limits of a pH of 5.5 to 6.0, the value of 5.8 being that which is suitable for the practice.

   In this process of applying metals to non-metallic objects, the use of the initiation chemical bath with nickel as a preparatory stage for that of the bath, of chemical nickel plating itself offers the advantage that time is virtually eliminated. induction of nickel plating time interval before chemical nickel plating begins on the dispersed growth seeds of palladium - when the initiation bath is used, also the advantage of considerably improving the adhesion of the nickel layer,

     the main part of which is supplied by the nickel-plating bath In addition, the nickel layer - which is, in fact, a layer of nickel-phosphorus alloy

 <Desc / Clms Page number 18>

 constitutes an ideal support to receive. then a layer of copper, which deposit- bit? The electrolytic route is considerably simplified by the presence of the nickel layer of good conductivity.

   In addition, there is a remarkable adhesion between the copper, when it is deposited electrochemically and the nickel when it is chemically deposited: no films, no blisters, no cracks, no tendency of any gold were noted. - te to a separation during all the tests developed to study this kind of bond.

     It is therefore noted that the process is not useful as a final phase in an operation of coating and decorating, by means of nickel, numerous manufactured articles formed essentially from non-metallic materials; it also constitutes an intermediate phase in the art of plastering and decorating by means of copper and other metals deposited by electroplating, of objects consisting essentially of materials which are not electrically conductive.

   Although the mode of execution currently considered to be the best for implementing the invention has been described, it is understood that various modifications can be made thereto, without departing from the scope of the invention. invention.
