Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to a mine prop of adjustable length, the body of which comprises an upper part sliding in a lower part and being able to be immobilized with respect to the latter in the propping position by interposing between them a part which is removed to facilitate removal of the prop.

   Struts of this type are known, the length of which can be varied between relatively distant limits.

   These props generally comprise two parts having side faces slightly inclined one parrapport to the other and between which a metal wedge can be driven in to immobilize them in the desired position. The outer part which receives the reaction of the wedge is reinforced by a belt. Because of the flat wedging face that the upper part must have, this part as well as the other which serves as a guide are generally formed by welded sections.

   These props have the drawback of being heavy and expensive. In addition, when the worker, -removes the metal wedge to try to recover such a prop, the ground is no longer supported by it at all and can collapse very low. Removal work is therefore very dangerous work.

   Non-extensible props are also known in which the support against the ground is achieved by driving a wooden block between the head of the prop and the ground or a piece of wood applied against the latter. '
The degree of crushing of this wooden block gives an idea of the pressure exerted on the prop. When removing it, the land is also

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 suddenly without support, and risk injuring the worker by collapsing.

   The present invention relates to a prop which does not have these drawbacks.

   . In the prop according to the invention, the aforesaid upper part carries a pivot for a cam which, by resting against the upper end of the lower part of the body, makes the upper part rise until its head is against the ground to be propped up.

   With such a prop, when the cam is released from its propping position, the upper part cannot. get off that. of a relatively short stroke so that if the ground tends to collapse, it is again supported after a small lowering. As a result, the worker has time to take shelter from danger.

   In a particular embodiment, the aforementioned pivoting cam is in the form of a stirrup, the two branches of which are arranged on either side of the upper part of the body.

   According to another advantageous feature allowing the length of the prop to be adapted to a certain extent to the distance between the grounds to be supported, the prop according to the invention comprises a foot screwed into the lower end of the body.

   Preferably, the lower part of the body is tubular.

   The use of a tube to constitute the body of the prop is possible because no wedging by driving a wedge between the two lateral faces of the sliding parts requires a flat lateral face. For a given moment of inertia, this shape results in a saving in weight. In addition, it simplifies the assembly of the screw-in foot to adjust the length of the prop.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   Finally, it also makes it easier to obtain props of different lengths from common parts when,. '. according to another feature of the invention, the lower part of the body comprises several tubes held in the extension of one another by one or more guide sleeves.

   Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which schematically represent, and by way of example only, four embodiments of the mine prop according to the invention. .

   Figure 1 is an elevational view of a first embodiment of the prop according to the invention.

   Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through a plane designated by the line II-II in Figure 1.

   Figures 3 and 4 are two perspective views of the upper part of the prop according to the figures
1 and 2, after removal of the head.

   Figure 5 is an elevational view of part of another strut according to the invention.

   Figure 6 is a longitudinal section through the prop according to Figure 5 by a plane designated by the line VI-VI in the latter figure.

   Figure 7 is an elevational view of part of a third embodiment of the prop according to the invention.

   Figure $ is a longitudinal section through a plane designated by the line VIII-VIII in Figure 7.

   FIG. 9 is a longitudinal section in the lower part of another embodiment of the prop according to the invention.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.

   The mine prop shown in Figures 1 # 4 comprises an upper part 2 which slides in a lower part 3. The upper part consists essentially of a rod 4, for example, of rectangular section which is guided in the upper end.
5 from the lower part 3.

   This rod carries a pivot 6 around which a cam 7 can be tilted which can bear against the upper end Susdite. This pivoting cam is in the form of a caliper, the two branches of which are arranged on either side of the rod
4.

   After the cam 7 has been brought into the position shown in solid lines in Figure 1 by tilting in the direction of arrow X from a position such as that shown in phantom in this same figure, the length is adjusted. of the prop so that pins 8, integral with a plate 9 constituting the head of the upper part 2 bear firmly against the ground to be supported. This adjustment is carried out, for example, by screwing more or less deeply into the lower part 3 a foot 10.

   To release the cam 7 from its propping position, it is possible to act in the direction of the arrow Y on a lever 11 pivoting at 12 relative to the upper end 5. This lever is engaged by one of its arms. in a hole 20 made in front of a spacer 13 constituting the core of the aforesaid caliper. To release the cam 7, you can also pull on a cable passing through the hole 20.

   The tilting movement of the cam in the opposite direction to that of the boom X is facilitated by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 back rollers 14 partially housed in the upper end 5 of the lower part 3. These candles rest on balls not shown which facilitate the rotational movement. They are held in place by a plate 15 screwed onto the end 5 and having openings smaller than the longitudinal section of the rollers. The axis of these is located a little below this plate.

   The lower part 3 of the strut body consists of a tube. This is very suitable for producing the prop according to the invention because no metal wedge must be applied against its lateral face to immobilize the upper part with respect to it. It also constitutes a simplification for the assembly of the foot which, by being screwed into it, adjusts the length of the prop.

   A handle 16 is attached to the lower part
3 to facilitate the transport of the prop and possibly the adjustment of the length thereof when the foot 10 has been placed on the ground. The handle 16 is, for example, welded to a part 17 in the shape of a U, the wings of which are themselves welded to the tube constituting the lower part.
3.

   In the prop shown in Figures 5 and 6, the head of the upper part 2 comprises two plates 9 and '.

   18, one of which is integral with the rod 4 and serves as a guide for the other which surmounts it. The latter plate is guided by pins 19 which slide freely in the plate 9. The two plates are moved away from each other by driving a wooden wedge between them.

  In service, the crushing of this wedge makes it possible to realize the importance of the load undergone by the prop.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

In the embodiment shown in Figures 7 and 8, the lower part 3 of the strut body comprises two: tubes designated respectively by
3a and 3b. These tubes are held in line with one another by a guide sleeve 21. The latter is placed inside the tubes. It goes without saying that the lower part 3 of the prop could comprise more than two tubes held in the extension of one another by corresponding sleeves.

     The adjustment of the length of the prop by screwing can be carried out other than by screwing a foot into the lower part of the body. To the figure
9, there is shown a threaded foot 10 which slides freely in the lower part of the tube 3.

   The lower end thereof rests on a nut 22 screwed onto the foot. This nut is advantageously provided with ears which facilitate its rotation, as well as a housing for a rim 23 of the tube. The loss of the foot during transport of the prop is prevented thanks to a ring 24 which covers the flange 23 and which is fixed to the nut 22 for example by screws 25. Partial unscrewing of the nut 22 before l The removal of the prop can be carried out without danger to personnel. It facilitates the subsequent removal of the prop from a distance.

   It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, arrangement and constitution of some of the elements involved in its implementation. , without departing from the scope of the present invention, provided that these modifications do not contradict the object of each of the following claims.
