<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a shoe tensioner and more particularly to a so-called front plate tensioner, more particularly suitable for ladies' shoes or summer shoes open at the heel.
Shoe tensioners with a wooden or plastic front plate and having a metal tension spring are generally constructed so that the spring attached to the lower surface of the front plate rests under tension against the sole of the shoe. the shoe after being introduced into it. The spring is thus applied against the sole at a point which is already located in the so-called intermediate part of the articulation of the shoe, which has the disadvantage of exerting on the front part of the relatively supple leather shoe and to be stretched, a tension directed from bottom to top and front to back and having the effect of making it warp. In addition, the thrust exerted by the spring on the point of articulation of the boot risks definitively modifying the initial shape of the boot.
These drawbacks are remedied according to the invention by giving the tension spring fixed to the lower surface of a shoe tensioner with a front plate a shape chosen so that the effective portion of the spring in the tensioned state lies in the the cavity surrounded by the anterior plate of the tensioner. It follows that the action of the spring inside the boot is exerted only on the anterior part of this boot and not diagonally, but in principle vertically between this front part and the portion of the sole which lies below it.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the shape of the spring is chosen so that its contour is applied against the sole of the shoe not only at one point, as in the known models, but also that a practically rectilinear portion, of the spring in the tensioned state runs parallel to the sole of the front part of the shoe.
The result of this is that not only a better distribution of the thrust is thus achieved, but also one avoids exerting too much pressure on a small area of the sole, which risks damaging it. Preferably, the portion of the spring intended to be applied against the sole of the boot is given a section that is wider and slightly convex on the outside.
The tensioner of the invention can be made of plastic and, preferably, of elastic plastic material adapting to the special shape of the shoe. The spring can, moreover, be fixed in a particularly simple manner by means of two folds in the form of longitudinal strips of the lower surface of the front plate of the tensioner, in which the upper end of the tensioner spring is inserted in band form which is held in place by a stud-shaped projection penetrating into a corresponding section of the spring.
If the front plate of the tensioner is made of wood, an oblique groove of the width of the upper part of the spring is cut out in the wood and the spring is fixed there in a suitable manner, for example by means of a screw. The extension of the upper end of the spring can then serve at the same time as a handle making it possible to grip the tensioner and to introduce it into the boot.
In the attached drawing which shows two embodiments by way of example of the invention: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a shoe tensioner with a front plate made of plastic according to the invention.
- figure 2 is an elevation on a smaller scale of this shoe tensioner introduced into a lady's shoe, - figure 3 is an elevation similar to that of figure 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of a lady's shoe in which is introduced a tensioner of the form of known construction.
- figure 4 is a plan view from below of the tensioner of figure 1, - figure 5 is a section of the tension spring along the line V-V of fig. 1, - figure 6 is a section along the line VI-VI of figure 1, - figure 7 is a section on a larger scale of the point of attachment of the tension spring of figure 6, - figure 8 is a longitudinal section of another embodiment of the tensioner, the front plate of which is made of wood, - Figure 9 is a vertical section of another method of fixing the spring, - Figure 10 is a section on a larger scale of this method of fixing.
The anterior plate tensioner of fig. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 consists of a front plate 1, preferably of elastic material, on the lower surface of which is fixed a tensioner 2. This consists of an upper portion 3, a lower portion 4 and a free end portion 5. The two side walls of the anterior plastic plate may move slightly closer to each other due to their elasticity. so as to adapt to the width of the shoe.
The shape of the tensioning spring 2 is chosen so that its effective portion which consists of portions 3 and 4 is in the tensioned state, FIG. 2, in the cavity surrounded by the anterior plate 1. This eliminates the friction of the lower part of the spring against the insole covering. The portion 4 intended to be applied against the sole of the shoe has a particularly rectilinear shape or corresponding to the curvature of the sole so as to apply against it over a large part of its length and no longer at one point. as up to now, as is particularly apparent from the comparison between figs 2 and 3.
Fig. 3 shows a front plate tensioner of the present ordinary construction form, the tension spring 2 of which is in contact at substantially only one point A with the hinge portion of the covering insole. The front plate 1 'of the tensioner is supported by the spring 2' at point A against the sole of the boot. As a result, the soft upper leather of the shoe stretches in the direction of arrow B and tends to crease in that direction. In addition, the thrust exerted by the tensioning spring 2 'risks pushing the point of articulation of the boot back to point A or at least of deforming it unfavorably.
On the other hand, we see in fig. 2 how the tensioner of the invention works, of which the tensioning spring 2 is applied by the greater part of its surface 4 against the anterior portion of the sole of the shoe so that the thrust is not concentrated in one single point.
The leather of the upper of the shoe is thus stretched in the direction of arrow C, that is to say in that which corresponds to the natural shape of the shoe bulging upwards on the front plate of the tensioner without folds can form.
As can be seen from FIGS. 4 and 5, the intermediate portion 4 of the tension spring is widened and slightly curved downwards, so as to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to further increase the extent of the bearing surface, and, moreover, to prevent the metal edges of the spring from coming into contact with the sole of the shoe.
Two folds 6 and 7 in the form of strips are formed on the lower surface of the front plate of the tensioner, in one piece with it and separated by an interval substantially equal to the width of the spring and the upper portion 3 of the spring 2 is introduced between these folds. A stud 8 disposed in the middle between these two folds 6 and 7 enters a hole 9 beyond portion 3 of the spring, which once introduced into the folds is thus retained in place. As a result, the spring need not fit tightly in the guides formed by the folds, which would make it more difficult to push in and out or risk damaging the plastic. It suffices to ensure a guide with 1 mm. of play, since the pin 8 by engaging in the hole prevents the spring from accidentally coming loose.
Fig. 8 shows an embodiment similar to that of the anterior plate tensioner described above. But the tensioner portion 10 is made of wood instead of plastic and therefore thicker.
The spring 11 is roughly identical to the spring 2 described above, except that its upper end 12 extends beyond the wood 10, so as to serve with its free lower end 13 as a handle allowing the insertion of the handle. tensioner in the shoe. The wooden part 10 of the tensioner is cut in the middle by an oblique groove 14 in which lies the upper end 12 of the spring which is fixed thereto by a screw 15. Of course, the upper handle can also be formed. by an appropriate extension of the wooden part 10. However, by extending the end 12 of the spring, a saving in wood and a reduction in weight is achieved.
The invention is of course not limited to the details of the embodiments described above and may include appropriate structural modifications. For example, the upper end of the spring of the plastic embodiment can be extended as a handle and, in contrast, the plastic portion can be made shorter. Likewise, in any event, the spring may be fixed in any suitable manner. In addition, it is possible by winding the rear end of the spring to form a handle which is easy to grip and serves to insert and remove the front plate tensioner.
Figs. 9 and 10 show a particularly advantageous method of fixing the tension spring on the front plate. These figures show a simple interlocking coupling in which in the socket 16, which is arranged on the inner side of the front plate, penetrates the end. fitting 17 of the spring 2. FIG. 9 shows this method of attachment in vertical section passing .par the front plate with interlocking pins.
Fig. 10 is a cross-section on an enlarged scale of a portion of the front pin plate between which the engagement end of the spring is inserted.
