Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

   REVENDICATIONS.

   The present invention relates to films of pllyethylen. It relates more particularly to polyethylene films having novel characteristics and to a process for their manufacture.

   Due to their physical and chemical properties, polyethylene films are widely used for wrapping and packaging. Due to their remarkable resistance to use at low temperature, they are ideally suited as protective packaging for food products such as poultry and meat, which must be kept in a cooler, or in a fridge.
In the packaging of food products, particularly poultry and meat, and food products containing meat for storage in coolers or refrigerators, the packaging must adhere closely, so as not to leave any air pockets between the packaging. packaging and the surface of the packed product.

   An intimately adherent package can be obtained by placing the product to be wrapped in an envelope made of heat-shrinkable film and subjecting this package to heat. It can also be obtained by placing the product to be packaged in an envelope made of an extensible material having a certain elasticity.

   US Patent No. 2,461,975 describes a process for manufacturing a thin-walled flattened flexible tube from polyethylene which has had great industrial success. In one form of this process, molten polyethylene is continuously extruded through an annular orifice to provide a seamless tube and as the tube exits the die, a tube is directed onto the tube. gaseous medium cooling in the vicinity of the die and the tube is inflated to a plastic state by means of a gaseous silver bubble enclosed in the tube to give it the desired diameter The tube is pulled from the die by a pair of rollers clamps which also serve to flatten the swollen tube to give it the shape of a flattened tube and it is in this state that it is wound on a mandrel.

   The nip rollers also serve to prevent the gaseous agent from escaping from the tube. To simplify the description, this method will be called hereinafter "the inflated tube method.
The commercial polyethylene films obtained by this inflated tube process, when suddenly subjected to a temperature of 10,000, show appreciable or low shrinkage in the machine direction, i.e. direction of extrusion but show little or no shrinkage in the transverse direction Other commercial films have similar shrinkage characteristics and in some cases these films even elongate in the transverse direction. versal, when subjected to sudden heating to 100 C.

   In addition, commercial films strangle when stretched considerably in the transverse direction, which adversely affects their appearance.

   An object of the invention is to provide a polyethylene film exhibiting novel characteristics and physical properties.

   Another object of the invention is to provide a flexible thin film without support of polyethylene having determined shrinkage characteristics.

   Another object of the invention is to provide a flexible, unsupported polyethylene thin film which shrinks appreciably in both directions when suddenly subjected to heat.

 Precious and not strangling when appreciableent lengthened in the transverse direction.

   Yet another object is to provide a method of manufacturing a polyethylene film having the characteristics indicated above.

   Other objects will emerge from the remainder of the description.

   These objects are achieved, on the whole, by making a flattened thin-walled flexible polyethylene tube by the inflated tube process, in which the orifice through which the molten polyethylene is extruded and the swelling ratio correspond to the. formula below.

   Orifice opening = K (swelling ratio) 2 where the orifice opening is the difference between the radii of the outer and inner lips of the die and is at least 0.007 inch (0.18 mm), K is no greater than 0.0018 inch (0.046 mm) and the swelling ratio defined by flat width of the flattened tube outer diameter of the orifice is between 3.5 and 8.

   As the formula states, the size of the orifice should be at least 0.007 inch and to obtain a polyethylene film having appreciable shrinkage capacity in both directions, when it is suddenly subjected to heat, K cannot exceed 0.0018 inch.

  When K expressed in inches is greater than 0.0018, the film exhibits unbalanced shrinkage characteristics. It shrinks appreciably in the machine direction and shrinks less, not at all, or even elongates considerably in the transverse direction, when suddenly subjected to heat. In the preferred embodiment, K does not exceed 0.0012 inch (0.032 mm), and is for example between 0.0005 and 0.0010 inch (0.012-0.025 mm).

   Also critical is the 3.5 to 8 swell ratio shown in the formula. A swelling ratio substantially outside this range results in a film which does not have appreciable shrinkage in either direction. In general, for a swelling ratio of less than 3.5, the shrinkage characteristics are not balanced and for a swelling ratio of more than 8 the film does not shrink much in any direction.

   Any polyethylene capable of being melt extruded into a thin film without support can be used. Polyethylene having a melt index of 8.5 or less has been successfully used.

  It is preferred to use a polyethylene having a melt index of between 0.5 and 2.5.

   To obtain polyethylene films which shrink appreciably in the machine direction and in the transverse direction, when suddenly exposed to temperatures of 99 to 100 C the density of the polyethylene is preferably less than 0, 9165, for example 0.9130 to 0.9150. Surprisingly, films prepared according to the invention from polyethylene having a specific gravity less than 0.9165 shrink more in both directions when suddenly exposed to temperatures above 100 ° C. such as 105 and 108 C, that when heated to a temperature of 100 C,

   It has also been surprisingly found that films prepared according to the invention from polyethylene having a density of 099165 to 0.9230 and exhibiting practically no shrinkage when suddenly subjected to a temperature of 99 to 100 ° C. shrink appreciably in both directions when suddenly exposed to a temperature.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 rature greater than 100 ° C., for example 105 and 108 ° C. In general, the shrinkage is greater the higher the temperature to which the film is exposed.

   The temperature of the die should be below that at which the polyethylene decomposes and can vary within fairly wide limits. Temperatures between 270 and 500 F (135-26000) can be used. Satisfactory results have been obtained with temperatures of 270 to 390 F (135-200 C).

   The heating method or device is of little importance provided that the heat to effect the shrinkage is applied abruptly. For example, the heating may be effected by abruptly immersing the film in a liquid medium heated and maintained at The desired temperature Alternatively, heating can be achieved by abruptly exposing the film to the desired temperature obtained by hot air, steam, convection heat, and coo
Any liquid medium can be used which does not adversely affect the film and can be heated and maintained at the desired temperature. When the contents of the package are a food product, the liquid medium should be preferably non-toxic. Boiling water, prooylene glycol at 100 C, glycerin at 10,000,

     a mixture of glycerin and water at 100 C, etc., are examples of liquid media which allow shrinkage to be effected at 99-100 C. To shrink the film above 100 C it is necessary preferred to use liquid media which have boiling points equal to or greater than the desired shrinkage temperature. The following liquid media, maintained at the temperatures indicated, are examples of products which have been used to reduce shrinking polyethylene films obtained according to the invention at temperatures above 100 C,

   The shrinkage is determined by the following method:
A sample film was cut to size 4 1/2 inches x 1/2 inch (114 x 13 mm), the largest dimension being parallel to the direction of extrusion. A weight of
0.5-1.0 grams at one end of the sample and this sample is marked 4 inches (101 mm) from the free end. '
The sample is then held for a 'short period by the free end,' so that the lower end of the weight is about 6 inches (152 mm) above the surface of a bath of li - quide well stirred at the chosen temperature, and the sample is allowed to fall freely.

   A sieve about 6 inches below the surface of the hot liquid provides a convenient means of picking up the sample which is to remain submerged for 5 seconds. The% shrinkage in the machine direction is then determined by measuring the distance between the mark and the free end of the sample.

   This test is repeated with a similar sample cut parallel to the transverse direction to determine the shrinkage in that direction. An elongation is considered a negative shrinkage, to facilitate the measurements.

   The film of the invention has an elongation of at least 100% in either direction and an elastic recovery of at least 55% and in some cases 75% or more. During elongation, the film exhibits no constriction and the absence of this constriction during elongation allows uniform elongation.

   The method for determining the elongation capacity and elastic recovery is as follows
One unit of length is marked on a strip of film and the film is stretched until the desired elongation is reached. The force is then immediately removed and the elastic recovery is allowed to play. The final length between the marks is then measured and the% increase is calculated from this measurement.

   The film obtained according to the invention is useful for wrapping any object on the surface of which the packaging is to be applied tightly. It is particularly useful for packaging food products to be kept in the fridge or in an icebox.

   In practice, the object to be packaged is introduced into a bag formed from a seamless tube obtained as described above and one end of which is heat-sealed. In the embodiment where the bag is to be heat shrunk, the bag is large enough to allow easy insertion of the article. After the introduction of the article, the open end is closed or sealed and the packaging is subjected to the action of heat for a relatively short period, for example 15 seconds and preferably at least 5 seconds, to cause the bag to shrink and conform to the object to be wrapped. The packaging is preferably evacuated before closing or sealing the open end.

   In the embodiment where the film is to form a tightly packed package in its elasticity, the perimeter of the bag is less than that of the object to be wrapped therein. The perimeter of the bag is enlarged, for example by stretching it so that the object can be inserted therein. If desired, stretching can be accomplished by applying vacuum to the peripheral wall of the bag. After the object has been introduced into the bag, the pressure is returned to normal and the bag then follows the surface of the object. Alternatively, the periphery of the bag can be enlarged by stretching its inner wall.

  After inserting the object, the stretching force is removed. If we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 As desired, the open end of the bag can be placed over a funnel through which the object to be packed can be passed. In this embodiment, the funnel deforms the end of the bag in contact with it and allows the object to easily enter the bag. The continuous movement of the object in the bag determines the stretching of this one and makes it closely follow the object.
When the packaging obtained by one or other of these methods contains an object such as a food product which must be refrigerated in order to preserve it, the packaging is kept in the refrigerator.

   When the object is a food product to be frozen such as poultry, meat, etc., the package is quickly frozen and its contents are frozen after the package has been placed under suitable conditions.

   The invention is particularly suitable for obtaining continuous films in the form of flattened thin-walled tubes. Although the examples relate to films in tube form having a wall thickness of 0.0018 inch to 0.0022 inch, tubes having a wall thickness of not more than 0.0005 inch (0.012 mm) or up to 0.0040 inch (0.10 mm) or more, can be manufactured.

   When it is desired to obtain the film in sheet form, exhibiting the properties described above, the tube may be slit lengthwise. If desired, the split films can be made into tubes or sealed bags which can be used as shrink or stretch containers for packaging as described above.

   In the present specification and the claims, appreciable shrinkage or an equivalent term refers to a shrinkage of at least 25%.

   Of course, numerous modifications can be made to the above description without departing from the scope of the invention.
