<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

The present invention relates to burners and in particular to burners of the type suitable for the combustion of liquid or gaseous fuels for the production of steam or hot water in a boiler.
Its main aim is to achieve a burner with improved efficiency and comprising a new device for mixing the fuel with the combustion air, making it possible to establish and maintain the correct fuel-air ratios and to significantly reduce the pressures of the system. , which decreases the magnitude of the motive force required by the blower associated with the burner and the intensity of the noise produced by the entire combustion apparatus.
It is generally recognized that high combustion efficiency can only be achieved if the air and fuel intended for combustion are completely and intimately mixed so as to form a substantially homogeneous combustion fluid in which the air and fuel are present in pro
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
predetermined optimutu portions.
If the air-fuel mixture is not substantially homogeneous, the desired smooth and uniform combustion cannot be achieved, and, particularly when a gaseous fuel is used, an inadequate mixture of air and gas frequently produces small explosions. creating fluctuations in the pressure of the combustion chamber, which results in quite poor operation which can in some cases be extremely dangerous.
It is also desirable that burners of the type contemplated by the invention can operate efficiently under widely varying thermal conditions so that burners of given dimensions are suitable for installation in boilers of widely varying sizes and allow high efficiency operation over a wide range of air and fuel flow rates for a given installation.
In order to obtain this high efficiency and maintain it throughout the desirable range of working conditions, the invention provides an effective means making it possible not only to constitute suitable mixtures of air and fuel but also to regulate the fuel flow rates and air without adversely affecting the combustion efficiency.
In tests made previously to meet these requirements and others, it has been proposed to use air guiding devices placed in the burners having the effect of establishing primary air currents and secondary enveloping a fuel current, the latter being sent to the burner in liquid or gaseous form. In one of the burners of: this type. the most efficient and giving the best results, the fuel, in liquid or gaseous form is introduced into an axially directed primary combustion air flow, so as to form a fuel-rich fuel mixture which is enveloped by an annular sheet secondary combustion air circulated in a helical path.
A particularly important object of the invention con--
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is to achieve a burner retaining the fundamental advantages of the burners of this type and allowing an improved combustion efficiency in a wider range of air-fuel mixing conditions than previously noted possible, and this by the use of a new device to direct, determine the proportion and regulate the flow rate of the primary and secondary air currents.
To determine the total efficiency of the burners of this. type one must consider the motive power requirements of the blowing system and the rest of the auxiliary equipment. The way in which burners are constructed to this day reflects the universally held belief that high combustion efficiency can only be achieved by using equipment which persists in providing a high pressure air supply. and at high speed.
reuse of such equipment, while allowing good combustion efficiency, has drawbacks which more than compensate. The complexity of the combustion efficiency gains For example, the problems of purchase price, size and maintenance are appreciably increased by the use of fans giving high speed and high pressure. Also the use of such equipment significantly increases the sound level of noise in the combustion chamber as well as in the fan. In many cases, the noise level developed in such burners is sufficient to render them unusable in the heating systems of public buildings such as libraries, schools and small offices.
Accordingly, another important object of the invention is to provide improved burners capable of maintaining high levels of combustion efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions despite the use of high pressure blowing equipment. air of reduced dimensions sending air at low pressures hitherto considered incompatible with high combustion efficiency.
It also targets a new air guiding device
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and fuel which has the effect of directing the combustion elements in such a way that the air sucks the fuel and allows a reduction in the supply pressure of the latter.
@ Moreover, it aims to produce burners of simplified construction capable of being manufactured and maintained at a significantly reduced price.
It also aims to produce improved burners with greater possibilities of use and capable of being transformed by the simple operation of the fuel control valves, with a view to burning either a gaseous fuel or a fuel. liquid, or permanently adjusted to burn only a liquid, by substitution of a single part.
The description which follows will make it possible to better understand the various aims, characteristics and advantages of the invention, with particular reference to the appended drawing, given purely by way of example, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in vertical section, with certain parts in elevation, a burner according to the invention, suitable for burning a liquid or gaseous fuel; - Fig.2 shows in elevation the end of the burner shown in. fig.I with some parts broken away for the sake of clarity; - - is a cross-sectional vertical view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1; - - Fig.4 shows in partial vertical section a variant of the invention.
The burner according to the invention, shown in FIG. 1, is suitable for burning a liquid or gaseous fuel. The fuel, in one or the other form, passes in the axial direction of the burner and thanks to the new guide device described in detail below, the stream of fuel is enveloped by a stream of primary air in which turbulence is produced by the combination of a stream of air flowing axially, at two separate points
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
trimmed by a distance, with radially directed air currents.
The air-fuel mixture thus produced is injected into a combustion chamber and is surrounded by a secondary air stream driven by a helical movement, so as to complete combustion completely. When a liquid fuel is used, it is atomized and projected into the primary air stream, into the combustion chamber.
'In the case where a gaseous fuel is used, it is intimately mixed with the primary air in a premixing chamber before its introduction into the combustion chamber, In a preferred embodiment of the invention it is provided a new guide device (the air which has the effect of dividing the air sent to the burner into four separate streams, three of which
are then combined in a novel way to form the primary air stream. The remaining air stream is injected separately into the combustion chamber as secondary air. The invention also provides for the use of a new means for controlling in a new way the proportions in the total air stream of the different distinct air streams and of controlling the total air stream without altering the characteristics or distribution of the different air streams. air.
In this burner a casing forming a main air chamber 10 is fixed to the end of a fire chamber 12 or combustion chamber of a boiler, for example by means of bolts 14.
The air chamber 10 has in section a substantially cylindrical shape, as seen in FIG. 2, and has an air inlet port open downwards 16 and an outlet port 18 arranged. axially in its end adjacent to the combustion chamber as seen in fig.l. The orifice 18 is coaxial with a frustoconical wall 20 of the refractory lining of the combustion chamber and with the generally cylindrical periphery of the air chamber 10.
As best shown in Figure 2 'the interior surface of the wall 22 of the port 16 is tangential to the cylindrical surface 23 of the chamber 10, the es-

space between the wall 22 and the edge 24 of the interrupted cylindrical wall of the chamber 10 defining the largest possible opening of the inlet 16.
The outlet port 16 is connected by a suitable flexible air line 26 to the outlet of a blower (not shown) in a usual manner. In this assembly, the current of air entering the apparatus is introduced under pressure at a substantially constant speed into the chamber 10 through the inlet 16, forming a movable layer or film of air in motion in contact with the chamber. wall 22 of a radial thickness equal to the distance between the wall 22 and the edge 24. This air stream entering the chamber 10 tangentially to the cylindrical wall 23 follows a path of generally circular shape around the wall 23 'as indicated by arrow 29 in fig. 3.
Means are provided for adjusting the volume of air admitted into the apparatus, by modifying the thickness of the intake air stream passing along the wall 22, without disturbing the tangential flow of the stream. of ai @ entering the room.
A butterfly or flap capable of being adjusted to change the size of the opening at 24 is represented by a plate-shaped member 30 having an outer surface 32 and an inner surface 34 suitably curved or contoured as. seen in the drawing, in order to produce minimum turbulence in the air stream passing through the intake 16. The plate 30 is suitably attached to swing arms 36 and 38 which in turn are attached to a shaft 40. which journals in the walls 42 and 43 of the inlet 16 as seen in fig.l. It is possible to provide any control linkage making it possible to positively adjust the position of the shaft 40.
Such a linkage is actuated by a throttle control member (not shown) also regulating the amount of fuel introduced into the burner in a conventional manner. By -the effect of this butterfly device, the quantity of air introduced into the chamber 10 can be modified according to the load imposed on the burner, without modifying sen-

sibling the speed of the air entering the chamber 10 to the right of the butterfly or shutter.
The air inlet speed is set at around 20 bolts per second (a tolerance of + 10% to - 15% may be allowed). Because the control member of the plate
30 is not, in itself, an integral part of the invention, it has not been shown and will not be described.
As the shaft 40 is parallel to the wall 22, as seen in Fig. 2, the shutter 30 can be tilted towards the wall
22 so as to reduce the opening of the inlet 16. Suitable stops are provided, to limit the movement of the flap 30, a shoulder 44 integral with the wall of the inlet port defines the open position. maximum of this shutter while an adjustable stopper 45. limits the hanging of the shutter.
Because the shutter 30 moves towards the wall 22, the thickness of the air stream and hence the quantity of air admitted can be reduced without disturbing the tangential flow of the air stream. - mission, while maintaining the air inlet speed approximately constant. @ Since the air pressure inside the chamber le ¯ is greater than that prevailing inside the combustion chamber 12 as a result of the draft of the furnace and of the lotion from the blower, the current of air, entering chamber 10 and circulating circularly around its interim wall, substantially forms a propeller which heads towards outlet 18.
Mounted on chamber 10 is an ignition device 46 operated by a transformer 47, a sight glass 48 and a lead sulfide fuel monitor 49 which are all of the conventional type.
The chamber 10 is provided on its side remote from the combustion chamber with a circular opening 50 in which fits an annular shoulder 52 of a coupling 54 for the passage of air and gas, this xaccord being fixed to the chamber 10 By several bolts 56. The air passes from the chamber 10 into the fitting 54 through a passage 58 in which is arranged an adjustment flap 59, and ar-

edge in an air nozzle 60 molded with the fitting. Note that the nozzle 60 is coaxial with the secondary air opening 18 made at the opposite end of the main chamber 10.
There is an inlet pipe 62 open at the bottom and also integral with the fitting 54, intended for the gaseous fuel and arranged to be connected to any suitable source of fuel not shown. At its upper end, the inlet 62 'is enlarged so as to form an annular space 64 surrounding the nozzle 60.
This space 64 is in communication with the interior of the chamber 10 through a circular opening 66 formed in the wall 68 of the connector 54 'at the center of the opening 50 formed in the wall of the chamber 10. cover 66 is co- axial with nozzle 60 and with orifice 18. A cylindrical mixing tube 70 is press-mounted or otherwise conveniently attached to a part having an annular flange, attached to the wall 68 of fitting 54 by means of several bolts 74, so as to dispose the inner surface of the tube 70 substantially coincident with the opening 66. The tube 70 is provided with rows of spaced openings 75 and 76 intended for a use which will appear in the following.
the tube 70 extends from the wall 68 and passes coaxially through the fleshy 10 to a point situated to the right of the outlet 18. Attached to the opposite end of the tube 70, for example by means of bolts 77, there is an air guide ring 78 provided with an outer annular surface 80 forming with the opening 18 an annular secondary air nozzle 82, the annular inner surface 84 of the ring 78 forming the ring. 'primary air outlet opening 86 ..
The liquid fuel injector indicated in its entirety by 90 is fixed in a position coaxial with the tube 70 by means of bolts 92 which penetrate into a mounting or device 94 for the admission of liquid fuel and atomizing fluid 94, mounted. by means of bolts 96 on the posterior wall 98 of the fitting 54. the injector 90 and the mounting 94 are not part of the in-

vention and will not be described in detail.
The device 94 comprises orifices 100 and 102 adapted to be connected, by pipes not shown, respectively, to a source of pressurized atomizing fluid, such as air flow. fear, and to a liquid fuel source such as fuel oil. The orifice 102 is in communication with a central fuel tube 104 which runs through the entire length of the injector 90 and terminates at its opposite end in a mixing or atomizing head 106. The air inlet 100 is in communication with the interior of a tube 108 for air circulation, which forms an annular passage around tube 104 and also terminates at its opposite end in head 106.
The injector 90 is arranged to inject the liquid fuel into the chamber
12 in the form of a fine mist so as to produce a short and concentrated flame. This allows satisfactory combustion and avoids splashing fuel onto the fuel transfer surfaces or refractory material of the furnace lining, and ensures complete combustion of the fuel in a relatively short combustion chamber.
The following description will now relate to a new air guiding device making it possible to obtain numerous advantages from the invention. Opposite the opening 16 and very close to the rear wall of the chamber 10 is an annular diffuser indicated as a whole by the reference 110 ..
The diffuser has an annular series of air guide vanes
112 spaced apart and longitudinally arranged, which are welded - or otherwise conveniently secured, at their opposite ends to annular sheet metal supports 114 and 116. Bolts 118 pass through a reinforcing ring 120 and screw into a ring. flange 122 secured in position to tube 70 by means of screws 124 such that diffuser 110 is rigidly secured to tube 70. The small diameter end of a rod 126 is mounted on a shoulder 128 of 11 ring 78 and the large diameter end of this cone is welded or otherwise fixed

suitable for the outer surface of the ring 116.
The cone 126 forms a closed air space around the tube 70, guides the flow of secondary air towards the secondary air opening 82 and gives rigidity to the assembly.
As noted above, the air inlet is disposed tangentially with respect to chamber 10 and, accordingly, the introduced air flows spirally through chamber 10 in a clockwise direction. shows, as seen in fig. 3.
A part of this air is intercepted by the fixed vanes 112 and is then directed radially inward towards the premix tube 70. A part of the air entering inwardly through the vanes 112 is directed so as to pass through the series of first primary air mixing ports 75 which have an edge disposed substantially to the right of the annular support 114. The rest of the air passes. Sending through vanes 112, enters tube 70 through the second set of primary air lumens 76 near outlet 86. Note that the division of the air flowing inward through the diffuser 110 depends; of the total relative areas of the openings 75 and 76.
In a particular installation with a one hundred horsepower boiler, the total surface area of the ports 75 is approximately equal to one fifth of the total surface area of the ports 76. The air currents penetrating radially inwards through ports 75 and 76, mix turbulently with the main primary air stream passing from chamber 10 through passage 58 into fitting 54 'and directed axially into tube 70 through nozzle 60.
The part of the air supplied to chamber 10 which does not pass through diffuser 110 or through nozzle 60 passes into the combustion chamber via secondary air nozzle 82 as an air filter. a secondary air stream in the form of a helix. The control flap 59 is mounted in the passage 58, to control the fraction of the air which is sent from the nozzle 60 to the ports 75 and 76 and to the nozzle 82.
the shutter 59 comprises a plate 142 rigidly fixed by means of screws 146 on a rod 148 which journals at its opposite ends in suitable bores 150 formed in the panels.

kings of fitting 54. Rod 148 p @ ut @tro fitted with a bolt held in place by a nut 152.
The volai; 142 pout and @@ locked in the adjustment position where it is placed by tightening the nut
152 and adjustment of the shutter position can be done by loosening nut 152 and rotating bolt 148 by hand. A position indicator is tightened between the bolt head and one of the '54' sockets. which bears suitable position indications placed in 156.
If a gaseous fuel is used, it can be introduced into the system through the intake cover 62 under reduced pressure due to the suction effect produced by the primary air nozzle 60. The air-gas mixture formed in the area which is in the vicinity of the nozzle 60 advances through the tube 70 and first meets the radial streams which flow through the first series of auxiliary primary air ports 75. It should be noted that because the two air streams at this point flow perpendicular to each other at different speeds and under different pressures, considerable turbulence occurs which ensures thorough mixing.
This action continues as the mixture advances through tube 70 and a new turbulence occurs with a new mixing effect as the stream of air and gas meets the radial streams which flow through. the second series of ports 76. As a result of the turbulent mixing carried out in the tube 70, a substantially homogeneous mixture of air and fuel is injected through the primary orifice 86 into the combustion chamber 12. The homogeneous fuel-rich mixture thus injected this combined with the secondary air envelope exiting through the nozzle 82 and flowing in a helix, so that the combustion starts and continues with an efficiency never before known.
The Applicant has discovered that by virtue of the fact that the main stream of primary air through nozzle 60 is in the axial direction of the burner, good combustion efficiency and the necessary complete mixing can be obtained using pressures of. air significantly reduced. For example, in a burner following the in-

vention intended for use with a 100 horsepower boiler vapor pressure in chamber 10 can be maintained at a level less than 2.5 7.5 centimeters of water than the pressure of 19 centimeters of water maintained in the best known burner models of comparable power.
Since the sound level of the noise developed by the burner and the mechanical force requirements of the blower are directly proportional to the pressure in the air chamber, it is recorded under the conditions of the invention. a significant reduction in the dimensions of the blower and the intensity of the noise produced by the burner. These unexpected advantages, which are not obtained to the detriment of the combustion efficiency, significantly reduce the purchase price and the maintenance costs of the appliance and allow its installation in conditions where the intensity of the noise of the appliances of combustion. this kind used previously prohibited their use.
As has been said previously, the apparatus shown in FIG. 1 is capable of being easily transformed so as to burn a liquid fluid. To carry out this transformation, it suffices to close the usual valves which control the gas supply line 62 and to open the valves which control the lines in communication with the orifices 100 and 102 formed in the device 94. While no mixing of air and fuel occurs upstream of nozzle 106 when liquid fuel is employed, the turbulence created in the primary air stream within tube 70 however greatly facilitates. mixing and combustion of the fuel mist injected into the combustion chamber by the nozzle 106.
All the other advantages attached to the reduction of the air pressure in the air chamber are enjoyed when the apparatus is operated as a liquid fuel burner.
In the event that a gazeane fuel supply is not available or when it is desirable for any other reason to operate the appliance only with liquid fuel
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
it is possible to replace the connection 54 for air and gas by another

of z record cord 160. This variant 160 '"reinforces the same system of adjustment flap 59 and a nozzle 162 whose lower configuration is identical to that of the nozzle 60. The essential difference between the two fittings lies in the elimination in connection 160 of gaseous fuel inlet 62 incorporated in connection 54.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments shown and described which have been given only by way of example.
