<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a sofa bed, the lengths of the base of which are made up of four parts articulated to one another and one of which is hidden in the back of the sofa when the bed is closed and referred to below. after "first part", can, while being guided in a guide, pass into a position close to the horizontal position to constitute the part closest to the head of the bed when the latter is open while the third part has a length such that when the fourth part is folded over the second part up to the backrest, it maintains the front of this fourth part at the height of the seat of a sofa.
A sofa bed of this type is known in which the part of the base located in the backrest when the bed is closed is hidden by a frame lined with fabric and pivoting at the free end of the fourth part, this frame serving as a foot to this last part when the bed is open. 11 as a result, in this last position, the back of the sofa is bare
According to the present invention, at the upper part of the back of the sofa, is articulated a frame which hides the first part when the latter is in the backrest and which is pushed back so as to pivot around its articulation during the opening maneuver and of, closing of the bed, by a cam carried by said first part
The free end of the fourth part can then, in the open position of the bed,
be supported by a swivel foot which can be placed against the base when the bed is closed.
In the sofa bed of the aforementioned known type, the first part of the side members is suspended, in the open position of the bed, on the one hand, at the lower end of the aforementioned slide and, on the other hand, at the 'end of the second part, which is itself suspended from one end of the third part, the latter being supported towards its middle like a pendulum and its pivot being carried by a slide which has been pulled out of a beam which is itself taken out of the side frame of the sofa and supported at the front by a foot provided with a caster.
In order to ensure a more positive support of the first part in the open position of the bed and to allow the elimination of the aforesaid beam and slider, according to the present invention,
each of the ends of the first part of the bed base is guided in a guide so as to immobilize this part vertically in a positive manner when the bed is open and also to positively support one of the ends of the second part.
The support of the anterior end of the second part is then advantageously carried out as follows:
this second part has, towards its end close to the third part, a foot pivoting about a horizontal axis and connected by a connecting rod to a point of the first part located so as to bring the pivoting foot closer to the bed base when closing the bed and move it away when you open the lito
With this arrangement, the pivoting foot at the anterior end of the second part is therefore automatically brought into the supporting position during the opening of the bed, following the change of inclination of the first part.
To support the third part at its anterior end,
a similar mechanical connection is provided between a pivoting foot situated towards the front of the third part and a point of the second part to which this foot is connected by a connecting rod. The change in position of this foot with respect to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
port to the third part is controlled by the pivoting thereof relative to the second part during the opening or closing maneuver.
Finally, in order to reinforce the stability of the seat of the sofa, when the bed is closed, provision is made to support the end of the fourth part which is located at this time in the vicinity of the backrest.
To this end, the fourth part of the side members presents upwards when the bed is open, an upright which, when said part occupies its position corresponding to the closed bed, rests on the second part.
In a preferred embodiment preventing the fourth part from being driven towards the front of the sofa by deformation of the articulated quadrilateral formed by the second, third and fourth parts, the latter being integral with its support post, the latter has a notch which, for the position corresponding to the closed bed, receives a heel of a tilting support relative to the second part of the side members, said tilting support being permanently urged by a spring to occupy a position for which the heel aforesaid is approximately above its pivot but being separated from this position by a cam integral with the first part when the latter occupied its position corresponding to the open bed.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent sohematically, and by way of example only, one embodiment of the sofa bed according to the invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of the main elements of this sofa bed, in the closed position of the bed, after removal of one of the side parts of the frame.
FIG. 2 is a view similar to that according to FIG. 1 for a partially open position of the bed.
Figure 3 shows, in the same way, the bed completely open.
FIG. 4 shows, on a larger scale, the means used to support the end of the fourth part of the bed base adjacent to the backrest when the bed is closed.
FIG. 5 represents these same means in a position corresponding to the partial opening represented in FIG. 2.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The sofa bed shown in figure 1 comprises a frame 2 from which one of the side parts has been removed, on this part were fixed two guides 3 and 4 which serve as a track for rollers 5 and 6 mounted at the ends of a part 7 of the base, which is made up of four parts 7,8,9 and 10 articulated to each other. The joints between these parts are denoted by 11, 12 and 13.

your parts are referred to below respectively: "first", "second", third "and -t'fourth" parts.
In the position of Figure 1, the first part 7 is hidden in the backrest by a frame 14 which is lined with fabric and which is hinged at 15 to the upper end of the sofa backrest.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The third part 9 has a length such that the articulation 13 between it and the fourth part 10 is at a level suitable for sitting when, as shown in figure 1, the fourth part is folded over. of the second and has its free end 16 near the backrest.
When performing the bed opening maneuver, the rollers
5 and 6 move in the guides designated respectively by 3 and 4 until one of them is stopped by a stop. During this maneuver, a cam 17 lifts the lower cross member of the pivoting frame 14 by so as to facilitate the passage of the mattress and the blankets under this frame. The cam 17 is advantageously constituted by a flat iron forming a trapezoid with the first part 7
As can be seen in figure 2, in the open position of the bed, the first part 7 is supported at its two ends by the slides 3 and 4,
via the rollers 5 and 6 The end of the second part 8 connected to the first is therefore also firmly supported by the slide 4 at a level appreciably higher than that where it was when the bed was completely closed.
Towards the other end of the second part 8, the latter is carried, in the open position of the bed, by a foot 18 which pivots about a horizontal axis 19 and which is connected by a connecting rod 20 in a point 21 of the first part located so as to bring the foot closer to the second part 8 when the bed is closed (see figure 1) and to move away from it when the bed is opened, as shown in figure 2.
Passing from the position of Figure 1 to that of Figure 2, the second part 8 therefore automatically rises to the level it must occupy when the bed is fully open
Point 21 is located below the spar of the first part 7 in FIG. 2 and is made integral with this part of the spar by means of a part 22 welded to said part.
It can also be seen in FIG. 1 that in the closed position of the bed, the second part 8 rests on the pivoting foot 18 by a projection 23 which it presents towards the bottom.
The third part 9 of the side members of the bed base is supported at one end at the same time as the second part 8 by the foot 18. At its opposite end, the third part 9 is supported in its open position shown in FIG. 3, by another pivoting foot 24. The horizontal pivot thereof is designated by 25.This foot is joined by a connecting rod 26 at a point 27 of the second part 8 of the base located so as to bring the foot 24 of the part 9 which Wear it when we bring the second and third parts substantially at a right angle, as shown in Figure 2, and move it away when we bring these two parts roughly in the extension of one of the 'other, as shown in Figure 3.
The fourth part 10 of the bed base has an upright 28 upwards in FIG. 3 which, when said part occupies its position corresponding to the closed bed shown in FIG. 1, rests on the second part 8,
In order to avoid that in this last position a push exerted parallel to the arrow X by a person sitting on the sofa could have the effect of sliding the part 10, the upright 28 represents a notch 29 (figure 4 ), which, for the position corresponding to the closed bed, receives a heel 30 integral with a support 31 tilting relative to the second part 8. This support, whose pivot is designated by 32,
is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
permanently subjected in the direction of arrow Y to the action of a spring 33 which tends to make it occupy a position for which the stud 30 is approximately above the pivot 32. In this position, the part 10 is therefore locked.
When the bed is opened, the tilting support 31 is made to pivot in the direction of the arrow Z so as to release the heel 30 from the notch 29, thanks to a cam 34 integral with the first part 7, said pushing cam, in the open position shown in FIG. 5, a pin 35 carried by the tilting support 31. As a result, part 10 is automatically unlocked when passing from the position of FIG. 1 to that in figure 2.
To facilitate the opening and closing maneuver of the bed, a buttonhole 36 is provided in the connection between the connecting rod 20 and the spar of the first part 7
A hook 37 is attached to post 28 so as to allow easy attachment of a fabric-lined board against the foot of the bed when the bed is open.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiment shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, without departing from the scope of the present invention, provided that these modifications are not in conflict with the object of each of the following claims:
