Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

On

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

   The present invention relates to filling tubes for underground mining operations or for other applications in which a bulk material is transported pneumatically or hydraulically.

   Since backfill pipes and the like are subjected to considerable wear from the transported product which slides along the length of the pipe, it is generally customary to soak the wall of the pipe which is exposed to the pipe. wear and tear. We

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 has obtained particularly good results with backfill pipes made of a two-layer material, where the inner layer consists of a steel which takes quenching, and whose outer layer, which is welded together with the inner layer , is made of a steel which does not take hardening.

  The advantage of such backfill tubes is that the wear-exposed inner side can be made very hard, so that such tubes have a relatively long life.

   The use of a two-layered material for the manufacture of the backfill tubes, however, requires the use of a not insignificant quantity of materials and means of manufacture. For some applications, where it is not important to achieve very high wear resistance, it is therefore desirable to have a backfill pipe made of a single layer material and relatively inexpensive. The tests did not fail to manufacture. single layer hardened steel tubes.

   It has been observed in this connection that it is not judicious to quench the entire thickness of the single-ply steel tube, because, in this case, the body of the tube becomes too weak to resist. Relatively high shock and impact stresses to which the backfill pipe is exposed, as experience shows, in underground mining operations. This is why we have been satisfied with reducing the hardness of the wall of the tube by tempering carried out after the fact, an operation which provides a tubular body having in its section in the vicinity of the inner wall a martensitic zone with a resistance of about 180 to 200 kg / mm2, this zone being continued outwards by a sorbitic transition structure or a troostite zone, having a resistance of 120 to 140 kg / mm2.

   We observed. however that even

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 tubes of this kind do not sufficiently withstand the stresses by shocks or knocks which occur, although their wall behaves in a fairly favorable manner with regard to wear by the product; transported.

   Or. Then proposed to quench the tubular body made of a single-layer quenching steel, so that continuous sections of hardened and unhardened steel are formed which are distributed in the tube in the direction of itself, length and its periphery. When the unhardened sections are then small compared to the hardened sections, a tube is obtained which has a wear resistance which is sufficient for many applications. However, the resistance of such tubes to shocks and blows also leaves much to be desired.

   The production of such tubes quenched by zones or by fields is also quite difficult. Until now, it was necessary, in tubes of this kind, to return the material more or less after the quenching, to obtain a tubular body sufficiently insensitive to shocks and knocks, which naturally again lowered the wear resistance.

   The invention is, however, based on the principle which aonsiste to achieve from a material in a single layer formed of a steel taking 11 quenching a backfill tube which has on the inner side and in its entire extent a layer. hardened martensitic, while on the outside of the tube the latter has a continuous, tenacious and pearlitic layer.

   The method of manufacturing tubes of this kind, which is the subject of the. present invention includes the following measures.

   The unhardened tubular body is passed, following

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 continuous movement, first of all by a heater operating preferably from the outside, for example of a ring-shaped gas and air burner, in the. region in which the tubular body is brought to a temperature situated a little below the temperature of the material.

   When temperature equalization in the section of the tubular body has been obtained, the tube is passed over a heating device placed in its cavity, for example along a burner also with gas and air, in the region of which the tube is brought from the inside to the quenching temperature under the action of a large drop in temperature, while the tube is at the same time subjected to cooling outside such, for example by blowing air, that the outer layer of the tube remains below the quenching temperature.

   Immediately following this heating of the tube to the quenching temperature, this tube arrives in the region of a high-action cooling device, placed in the cavity of the tube, for example of a watering device. water, by means of which the material is suddenly cooled and quenched.

   In the object of the present invention, while the tube is being heated by heating to the quenching temperature, cooling devices are preferably made to act, acting rather strongly on the outside, in limited sectors of the periphery. of the tube, for example by the action of small water sprinklers, in the region of which the outer layers of the tubular crps are kept at a temperature somewhat lower than those produced in the re - gion of air coolers, namely at temperatures below the quench temperature.

   The backfill tube or similar part manufactured

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 according to the method which is the object of the present invention is remarkable by a high resistance to wear and at the same time by a high resistance to stress @ by impact:

     and by strokes, Because it is the whole of the tubular body which is brought beforehand, before heating up to the quenching temperature from the inside, to a temperature slightly lower than the. quenching temperature, the thickness of the inner layer brought to the quenching temperature is considerably increased, even when the tube is cooled at the same time from the outside so that the outer layer remains in - below the proboscis temperature.

   The layer soaked to a relatively great depth on the inner face of the cubes, and thus obtained, gives the tube a long life in terms of wear by the transported product.

   On the outside, the tubular body is advantageously protected against impacts and knocks, in particular against the notching effect, by the tenacious pearlitic layer which extends around the entire periphery of the tube.

   At the same time this is achieved by additional cooling devices or small, more strongly acting spray jets, which exert their action from the outside during reheating to quench temperatures on the. tubular part, the formation in the tubular body of bands or

 petlitio ue s ribs, that is to say tenacious, which increase its resistance to stresses by impact or by blows, so that the tube according to the invention has in this respect almost the same advantageous properties than the aforementioned two-layer backfill pipe.

 that in the sectors located in the gaps, has no practical influence on the wear resistance of the tubes, because the harder layers are able to a certain degree to protect against wear also the softer layers located in the intervals. This is so in particular., When the more intense action cooling device acts not on a line of the outer surface of the tube which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tube, but on a helical line rotating around tube or a wavy or zig-zag line on the tube.

   Such a line form can be obtained when, in addition to the movement in the direction of its longitudinal axis, the tube or the cooling device which acts from the outside performs a regular rotational movement or an oscillating rotary movement. control around the longitudinal axis of the tube.

   The tube according to the present invention is advantageously executed with a wall thickness of 8mm. By the process which is the object of the present invention, there is obtained a depth of cure on the inner side of the tube which is about 4 to 5 mm, while the tube has on the outside a. pearlitic layer of approx. 1, :, 1 to 2 mm which extends for about 3 to 4 mm in the region of :: tances or precipitated veins which remain tenacious,
The inner martensitic layer of the tube is quenched until about 180 to 200 kg / mm2 is obtained. The resulting sorbitic or troostite transition texture exhibits a strength of 120-140 kg / mm, while the outer skin everywhere has a strength of 50-60 kg / mm2.

   The device which is necessary for carrying out the method is simple and reliable in operation. It basically consists of a device providing movement

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 vertical movement and the possible additional rotational movement of the tube to be quenched, of an annular burner which causes the preheating of the tube, of an internal burner with which the tube is heated up to the quenching temperature, of a cooling device located approximately at the height of the latter burner and which surrounds the tube on the outside, and a sprinkler device located inside the tube, at the rear of the burner in the direction some movement.

   The external cooling device consists of slotted tubes in the form of sectors, for example four such tubes, through which cooling air is blown in an adjustable amount towards the periphery of the tube. tube, and small sprinklers placed in the intervals between these tubes and which cause the formation, in the body of the head, pearlitic bands which remain hard.
