<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
appareils plastiques.

By carrying out the invention in practice according to an appropriate mode as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, an injection molding machine is provided comprising a frame 10 on which is mounted a table 11 carrying a series of ' molds 12. The table can rotate around a shaft 14 and is carried by a support 15 which can slide, for example on rollers 15a arranged on the frame 10 and movable on the latter by means of a suitable mechanism (not shown) . An injection head 13 is also mounted on the frame 10 in a displaceable manner and is adapted to be actuated by a hydraulically or mechanically actuated piston, or by pushers 16.
In order to perform a molding operation, the table support 15 is moved so as to cause a mold 12 to come into engagement with the injection head 13, after which the plastic material is.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is injected into the mold by moving the piston or the pusher 16. When the molding operation is completed, the piston 16 moves back and the table support 15 returns to its initial position to allow a new mold 12 to come in. alignment with the injection head 13 by rotating the table 11, the above operations then being repeated.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the injection head 13 comprises a support 17 mounted on the frame 10 so as to be able to move, and subjected to the action of the piston or the pusher 16. The support 17 also comprises a casing 18 inside which is mounted a flanged end 19 of a cylinder 20 adapted to slide in the casing 18. A propeller or worm 21 is mounted so as to be able to rotate in the cylinder but is fixed as to the longitudinal movement with respect to the support 17. The screw 21 is actuated to rotate by means of a clutch 22, a chain or other transmission 23, and a gear change 24, from a motor 25 .
A diffuser head 25 having a series of narrow channels or passages is attached to the outer end of the screw 21 and fits tightly into the cylinder 20.
A chamber 27 is provided between the diffuser head 26 and the outer end of the cylinder 20. An end plate 20a of the cylinder has a central opening closed by a plug 28 which carries a valve 29. The latter comprises a nozzle 30 of which the interior communicates with side lights3l. The nozzle 30 also carries a nozzle 32 having a central bore and a shape allowing connection with the inlet of the mold. The opposite end of the nozzle 30 carries a closure disc 33.
The
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The length of the valve formed by the nozzle 30 exceeds the longitudinal thickness of the plug 28 and the valve is adapted to slide in the plug so that in its external position the outlet of the chamber 27 is closed and in its, .Internal position the plastic material can flow through apertures 31 and the bore of the nozzle when the nozzle 32 comes into engagement with the plug 28, An opening 34 provided in the side of the cylinder 20 allows the feed into the latter of raw materials coming from a hopper 35. The cylinder has cylindrical heaters indicated at 36, 37, 38 and 39, preferably of the electric resistance type.
By performing a molding operation, the engine 25 is started and the clutch 22 is engaged to actuate the worm 21. The latter can rotate for example at a speed of 100 to 300 revolutions per minute and has a length which corresponds to preferably about eight times its diameter.
The raw material which may be in a powder, grain, cubed, paste or other suitable state is introduced into the hopper 35 and enters the space between the cylinder 20 and the cylinder. screw 21. The material advances through the worm and is mixed and plasticized between the screw and the cylinder wall as it advances towards the diffuser head 26. On the last part of its travel, the material is heated by heaters. Material is forced through the narrow passages of diffuser head 26 and enters chamber 27.
As this demise is filled, the pressure of the material therein causes cylinder 20 to move to its far left position as shown in Figure 3, the flange 19 then resting
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
against the left wall of the casing 18. In this position, the nozzle 32 engages with the mold orifice 12 and moves to the right as shown in the figures so that the opening of the valve comes into communication with the chamber 27 through the slots 31, At this moment, the screw 21 is disconnected from the engine actuation by an appropriate mechanism which releases the clutch 22 and the piston or pusher 16 to the left, thus moving the injection head 13 to the left.
Since cylinder 20 remains stationary after its engagement with the mold, screw 21 and casing 18 are moved to the left causing compression of the plasticized material in chamber 27 and its forced entry into the mold, the valve being. moved in the cylinder as the diffuser head approaches the end thereof. The diffuser head thus acts like a piston to inject the plasticized material into the mold.
When the required quantity of material has been injected into the mold, a movement in the opposite direction is initiated by an appropriate automatic mechanism producing the return of the piston or pusher 16 to the right, driving the casing 18 and the screw 21, the cylinder 20 remaining fixed until the flange comes into engagement with the front wall of the casing 18.
A new movement of the piston 16 then effect the withdrawal of the cylinder 20. During these movements, the diffuser head 26 is withdrawn in the cylinder 20 leaving the chamber 27 free for the reception of a new quantity of fluid or plasticized material, the valve 29 then being closed. The cycle of operations for a new injection into the mold then begins again.
In another embodiment of the invention such
EMI6.1
as illustrated in Figures 1 5 and i, an injection head 13
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is provided which may be similar to that described above, except that it is fixed relative to the frame 10.
12a A mold / motreé in 12, @@@ is mounted for displacement on the frame 10. The mold comprising two parts 12 and 12a is mounted on two plates or supports 40 and 41. A plate 42 carries a jack or ram 43 for closing the mold. The plate assembly is mounted on slide bars 44 and 45 and can move on frame 11.
A support plate 46 is fixed to the frame 10 and carries an injection jack or ram 47 The mold parts 12 and 12a are located on the plates or supports 40 and 41 and can be closed together by doing. to work. the jack or ram 43, and in this way the plates or supports 40, 41 become in fact a single unit. This assembly or unit moves on the frame 10 by operating the jack or ram 47, and the assembly and the mold are thus moved to engage the injection head 13.
The injection head 13 is generally similar in construction to that of the injection head described above and has a worm or propeller 21 fixed lengthwise, and a cylinder 20 capable of moving lengthwise with respect to it. the worm. If desired, however, the arrangement can be changed so that the cylinder is stationary, and the worm receives longitudinal translational movement along with rotation.
The means for actuating the screw 21 comprise a clutch 22 which is also adapted to act as a safety device to limit the engine torque, and can also include direction reversal elements of any desired type, actuated by mechanical means, electric, or others.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
A diffuser head 26 is mounted on the front end of the screw 21 and can be presented as described in the previous example. Alternatively, however, the diffuser head may be provided with shut-off valves as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. The diffuser head comprises a cylindrical block 26 which fits tightly into the cylinder 20 and has narrow channels or passages. 48 formed in its periphery. A valve or blade 49 is placed in front of each passage and is pivotally mounted at 50 to act as a flap valve. As the plastic material is compressed for injection into the mold, the valves open around their pivot point to allow compression of the material in the passages 48.
If there is excessive pressure in the compression chamber 27, the valves will close the channels or passages and prevent the opposite direction movement of the material. Other forms of shut-off valves can be provided as described in the patent application of the same day of the same name, which relates to apparatus for molding plastics.
By carrying out the invention in practice according to another embodiment, the cylinder of the injection head described in the previous examples is modified as illustrated in FIG. 7. A worm or feed and plasticization propeller 51 is rotatably mounted in an injection cylinder 52 having heating means 53 preferably located near its anterior end. All suitable means (not shown) are provided for actuating the worm or propeller which is mounted so as not to be able to move longitudinally relative to the cylinder. The material is fed from a hopper 55, into the space between the screw and the cylinder through
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
an opening 54 located towards the rear part of this cylinder.
A diffuser head 56 is mounted on the anterior end of the worm and has narrow channels 57 at its periphery. These channels can have any desired shape. The front end of the cylinder is closed by a cover 58 in which there is fixed a plug 59 having a central bore in which can slide a valve having a nozzle 60 and a closing disc 61. The pressure of the material supplied to the cylinder can slide. forward by screw 51 holds the valve closed as shown in Figure 7. By bringing a mold into engagement with nozzle 60 as described below, the valve is moved inwardly so that material can be injected into the mold.
Screw 51 is of course coarse pitch and rotates at a high speed so that fluid or highly plasticized material is fed into the valve at relatively low pressure. The screw can be actuated by any suitable means, but preferably the engine actuation comprises a clutch adapted to also delimit the engine torque, and members for reversing the direction of actuation. The arrangement is such that the actuation can be stopped or reversed at any time.
Referring to Figures 8 and 9, the injection head is carried by a frame 62 also carrying a table 63 which supports two or more molds or supports indicated at 64.
These molds can be of any suitable type and can include cores. The table 63 is generally circular in shape and can rotate around a central pad 65 on a movable carriage 66, the table being supported by the latter by means of rollers 67. The carriage 66 can move towards the injection head. and move away from it on pebbles 68.

longitudinal guide means being provided, if necessary.
The displacement and the rotation of the table 63 is effected by a hand lever 69 (figure 9) provided on a shaft 70, which produces the actuation by means of a gear wheel 71, of a wheel d A larger gear 72 carrying a pair of arms 73 having a pin 74 and constituting a crank. A connecting rod 75 including an adjustable clamp lantern 76 connects the pin 74 with a pin 77 mounted on the carriage 66. A circular rack 78 is attached to the lower part of the table 63 and has an appropriate number of teeth 79 corresponding to the number. molds or mold supports. A spring latch 80 is pivotally mounted on the frame 62 in position allowing engagement of the teeth of the rack.
Actuation of the hand lever 69 in one direction actuates the crank arms 73 to pull the carriage 66 and table 63 toward the injection head and lock it in position with the mold injection port engaged. with the nozzle 60 to open the latter, so that the material flows. in the mold under a low pressure supplied by the worm 51. During this movement of the table, the rack 78 is moved away from the latch 80 by a sufficient distance to allow the latter to fall into the following entry. When the injection molding operation is completed, the hand lever 69 is moved in the opposite direction to return the carriage 66 and the table to their original position.
Since the latch 80 has previously been brought into engagement with the next entry, this return movement causes the table to rotate about its axis at an angle such that the next mold comes in.

alignment with the injection head. In order to ensure correct alignment a spring loaded plunger (not shown) may be provided in the arrangement to ensure exact angular placement of the table.
When the rotational speed of the feed screw 51 has been fixed, it can generally remain constant for each of a series of injection operations, so that the duration of the filling of the mold will depend on the volume of the injection. molded article. As soon as a mold has been filled, the actuation of the feed screw is interrupted and the mold table is withdrawn so that the valve of the injection head closes under the residual pressure and prevents any untimely release of material between successive injections. Each filled mold is opened at an appropriate time and the cooled molded article is removed, after which the mold is closed again. The production of molded articles can thus be done at a rapid rate.
Since relatively low pressures are employed, many parts of the apparatus could be formed from metal or light alloy.
It will be readily understood that the invention enables an apparatus to be obtained in which the mass production of the molded articles is not hampered by waiting for the molds to cool, since these can be emptied or removed at. any appropriate time while filling other molds.
It is understood that the rotary mold table arrangements described in the preceding examples can be employed with any of the injection roll arrangements described and claimed in the application of the same date relating to apparatus for molding molds.

plastic devices. Also, if desired, the depth of the worm is greater at the anterior end and gradually decreases. This facilitates the feeding and plasticization of the material.
The apparatus according to the present invention is suitable for molding suitable injection moldable materials, such as rubber, rubber like materials, organic plastics, more particularly polyvinyl plastic such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride, or the like.
