<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

The present invention relates to a mechanism for precisely defining the longitudinal position of an elongated strip formed by a photographic film.
It often happens that it is necessary to precisely determine the position of a photographic film with a view to its exposure, etc., and then to move the film over an exactly determined distance or length.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This can be achieved, for example, by perforating the film towards its edges, and advancing it according to. distances which are predetermined by the spacing of the holes or perforations. In cinematography, for example, the film is advanced and put in place by fingers acting by traction, attacking successive holes in the film.
However, in these applications, it is difficult to modify the film advancement distances, given that they are predetermined by the spacing of the holes,. and on the other hand the smallest distance by which the film can be fed is not generally less than the distance between the centers of neighboring holes. There is a film drive mechanism using chain wheels, which are rotated predetermined angular distances and whose teeth positively engage holes or perforations in the film.
Although they are not subject to the aforementioned limitations, these mechanisms are however not suitable in certain applications. In an apparatus for reproducing a seismograph sketch of the type described in the French patent filed the same day in the name of the same company for: "Apparatus for the reproduction of deismograms used in geophysical prospecting", a photographic film in form of tape on which the recording traces of a geophysical seismograph are juxtaposed to form a seismic profile or diagram.
In order to maintain the longitudinal scale at which the drawing is established, it is necessary to advance the film a predetermined fixed distance between the stages of reproduction of the traces. it because of the width of the film used -
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
(which is about 50 cm) and the large separation of the rows of holes is not possible,. in practice, to use a perforated film, which would also significantly increase the cost price of the film. In addition, the projecting teeth of the chain wheels would mechanically hinder the scanning process which, in the drawing drawing apparatus, takes place in a direction transverse to the longitudinal dimension of the film carrying the drawing.
The invention relates to a. A film transport mechanism ensuring the movement of a photographic film precisely over a predetermined distance, allowing that film to be repeatedly advanced over that predetermined distance, and in which predetermined repeated advancement distances can be changed easily.
The description which will follow, given with reference to the appended drawings given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention: -

In the mechanism according to the invention, the photographic film is transferred from a supply reel to a receiving reel, passing over a take-off roll which is connected by engagement to a ratchet wheel, the pawl of which controls a contactor.
When advancing the film, the take-up reel is rotated, preferably
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
by an electric motor, until the pawl clicks. lifts while passing over the ratchet tooth, and 'falls back into the next gap, after which the contactor actuated by the pawl ensures a return of the supply coil, preferably by an electric motor, until that the rear face of the ratchet tooth comes to rest tightly against the pawl, so that the ratchet wheel cannot continue to move, thus ensuring precise placement of the film on the take-up roll .
Although the invention is described herein in its application to the aforementioned seismograph profiling or sketching apparatus, in which the film is photographically exposed on the take-up roll, it is evident that the exposure or Further processing can take place at any point on the film after it has been advanced and precisely set by the mechanism described herein.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the mechanism is housed in an outer casing or box 26, which can naturally contain other conjugate devices in addition to that forming the subject of the invention.
It has been shown in this fig. 1 is an end view of the film transport mechanism, the film advancing device indicated schematically at 37 being described in detail below. This mechanism comprises a feeder reel 27 and a receiver reel 28 ,. The film 21 passes over a take-off roll 30, on which it is exposed or otherwise processed, as desired.
The film 21 also passes on additional rollers 31, 32, 33, and 34, which are mounted crazy and which serve to guide

film 21 through appropriate reader keys (not shown). We see that these deflectors can be arranged from the. dewlap optimum for the particular use envisioned for the apparatus. A pressure roller 36 is spring loaded to press against it.
roll 30, thereby keeping film 21 in close contact with take-up roll 30, the pressure being sufficient to prevent slippage of the film. on this roll.
The film. 21 is wound normally on the supply reel with its emulsified face facing inward; it is transferred from the supply reel 27 au'rouleau de. draw 30 in a position such that its emulsified face faces outward, and then it is wound up. again on take-up reel 28 with its emulsified side facing inward.
The width of the film 21 'or axial length of the rolls can be any desired value. As shown in fig. 1, the film 21 passes over the roll 30 in order to undergo a printing at each step of movement, but if desired this film 21 can pass through other media, before or after its passage over the roll 30, for other applications . The film advance device 37 is mechanically connected to the reels 27 and 28, and is operated periodically each time the. film 21 must be moved by a predetermined amount for processing the next section of film.
The film advance device (which is only shown schematically at 37 in Fig. 1) is described with reference to Fig 2, which is a view thereof. "exploded" perspective. In fig. 2, the coil 28 constitutes the coil

receiving and 27 designates the supply spool. The rollers 31, 32. and 34, shown in fig. 1, are not shown in FIG. 2. The film 21 leaves the spool 27. passes over the take-up roller 30, between this roller 30 and the pressure roller 36, and over the roller 33, to reach the take-up spool 28. A reversible motor 4. to direct current drives the mechanism through a worm gear 5. and a claw coupling 6. with manual disengagement.
The coupling 6 can be disconnected judiciously by the operator when the film is placed in the magazine or when it is released, this operation usually being carried out in a dark room. The coupling 6 attacks the shaft 7 on which is wedged a right pigeon 8 which, by means of a mounted pinion 1 or 9, drives the pin 10 keyed on the shaft 11. The barrels of the coils 27 and 28 have suitably approximately the same diameter. However, when referring to coils 27 and 28, the term "effective diameter" refers to the outside diameter of the barrel, and of the film wound thereon.
According to an important feature of the invention, the pinion 8 has a much smaller diameter than the pinion 10.
As an example, it seems judicious to use 24 teeth on pinion 8 and 64 teeth on pinion 10. The ratio between the effective diameter of the supply spool 27 and the effective diameter of the take-up spool 28 should initially be lower than the ratio between pinion 10 and pinion 8, and during the transfer of the film from the supply reel to the take up reel, this ratio decreases further.
The shaft 13 forms the axis of the take-up reel 28,

and it is -connected to it by keys or in some way. similar. There is provided between the shaft] / ¯ and the shaft 13 a freewheel coupling 12, shown in more detail on

However, slippage of the coupling 14 occurs without slippage of the film on the roller 30 if the latter is blocked or delayed, without tearing the film 21. Instead of the friction coupling, the friction coupling can be used. 14, other equivalent devices,
for example a magnetic coupling or any device capable of transmitting an appropriate but limited torque in either direction of rotation.
The roller 30 drives an oaue combined with a suitable probe, in order to actuate the control circuit. This cam is preferably provided under the drills of a ratchet wheel 17, which is driven rote.tien proportional to ratchet 17¯, which is driven in rotation proportional to the rotation of the roller 30 by these pinions 15 and 16.
A pawl 18 bearing on the ratchet wheel 17 is biased downwards by a spring 19 working in traction. A rigid mechanical link but allowing a pivoting movement (designated by 20) connects the pawl.
18 to a snap-action switch 23, in such a way. that, when the pawl rests on the base of a ratchet, as seen in FIG. 2, the contacts of the ccntactcur 23 occupy a normal position which is also that shown in FIG. 2. Switch 23 is however actuated when. the pawl is raised, for example when it passes over a ratchet tooth.

The friction torque thus generated maintains the film 21 at the desired tension.

In the application of the invention to the apparatus for reproducing seismograph sketches according to the aforementioned patent, it seems judicious- to give the effective diameter of the take-off roll 30, a value of 2.5 cm, and the ratio ¯ between gears 15. and 16 a value equal to pi, and judiciously equal to 44/14.
In this case, a revolution

of the sprocket 16. corresponds to the passage of ', 3.5 cm of' film on the upper part of the roll 30. ' This arrangement allows to obtain as many intervals per cm of film as there are do teeth on the ratchet 17. Consequently, if it is desired to modify the intervals of the film, it suffices to replace the. ratchet wheel 17 with another comprising a number of teeth equal to the number of intervals desired per cm of film.
In all other applications of the device, it is possible to adjust the transmission ratio between the pinions' 15, and 16 or to choose the effective diameter of the roller 30, or both, so that the number of teeth of the ratchet wheel 17 corresponds. at a desired interval on the film.

take-up reel 28 in order to make a frictional contact, thereby reducing to a moderate extent the counterclockwise rotation (looking at Fig. 2) of reel 23. when coupling 12 is disengaged.
This avoids any excess unwinding of the film from reel 28, and the need to rewind the film already unwound in the next operation.

the operation of the mechanism. This push-button 50 is only pressed momentarily, and it is possible, according to a variant, to provide another device with manual or automatic control to ensure the momentary closing of the circuit as indicated at 50, when it is. desirable to trigger the operation of the transport mechanism, the film.
The momentary depression of the button 50 establishes a circuit passing through the winding of the relay X1G, which closes the contact 51, thus locking this relay in its working position, since a holding circuit is then obtained passing through the contact. 52, of relay X4G.
The energization of the XiG relay also connects the battery 56 to the motor via the reversal contacts 53 and the resistor .54. This connection is designed so that the motor rotates in the proper direction to cause the rotation of the shaft 13 (Fig. 2) in the direction indicated by the arrow, and to drive the coil r '. aptrice 28 in the direction corresponding to the winding of the film 21. The resistor 54 is interposed in the motor circuit, in order to adjust the forward speed of this motor to the desired value.
The motor 4 therefore advances the film 21. which., Passing over the take-off roller 30, causes the advance of the ratchet wheel 17, so that the pawl 18 overlaps a tooth of the ratchet, When the pawl is raised , it actuates the contactor 23, and when this one closes its upper contact, a circuit is then established by the winding of the relay X3G, which closes its contact 55 However, since the lower contact of the contactor 23 is now open, no circuit is
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
established by relay X4G, Bias the circuit now prepares the reversal of the direction of. actor's walk. The switch 23.
is preferably of the snap-breaking type, and it makes a connection with one or the other! of its contacts, without presenting an intermediary position.
When the motor 4 winds up the film and causes the ratchet wheel 17. to advance, the pawl 18. eventually falls beyond. of the crest of the tooth, and the contactor 23 is then returned to its lower contact. Since the X3G relay is of the slow release type, a circuit is established. by switch 23 and contact 55 ,. in order to excite the winding of X4G. This winding is energized during the time delay of relay X3G.
As soon as the X4G relay is energized, its contact 58 drops back to the. lower pad, which opens the circuit keeping relay X1G energized. When releasing the XiG relay, the reversing contacts 53. return to the position shown in fig. 3, an earth being applied by the relay contact 52. The current from the battery 56. is evenly applied to the motor 4 in the opposite direction, so that this motor stops quickly and its direction of travel is reversed. .
Since it is desirable to quickly stop the motor and then return the film to its correct position, no series resistance is interposed in the motor reverse circuit. Cornac indicated previously, the motor recalls the film until the rear face of the tooth which has just passed under the pawl 18 is pressed against this pawl.
The ratchet stops. the ratchet wheel, which interrupts the motion of the film. 'The motor can then cause the coupling 14 to slip.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
for a short time. However, the motor reversing circuit is only closed during the time delay of relay X3G. At the end of this time delay, relay X3G is reestablished, contact 55 opens, and contact 52 returns again to its upper position.
The circuit and the mechanism are now ready for another work sequence, each time a momentary closure of the circuit is assured at 50.
In order to adjust the timing of the slow release relay X3G, a capacitor (not shown) can be connected in parallel with the winding of this relay. A significant adjustment of the time delay can be obtained by choosing the capacitance of the capacitor. Alternatively, two or more slow release relays similar to X3G can be cascaded, in order to further increase the time delay.
In fig. 3, a resistor 54 is provided in the forward circuit of the motor., While no resistance is shown in the reverse circuit, but it is evident that the forward and reverse speeds can be adjusted by. interposing or removing appropriate resistors in the circuit, as desired, or modifying the circuit slightly, to provide batteries with different voltages for each direction of rotation.
The motor 4, shown, is of the permanent magnet type, its direction of operation being reversed simply by changing the direction of the current passing through its armature, but it is obvious that a motor with a wound inductor can be used, in which case only the armature current is applied to reversing contacts 53 ..
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
A three-wire reversible motor can also be used, in which case the battery 56 is connected by appropriate contacts of the relays X1G and X4G, in order to ensure the inversion of the. direction of motor operation.
If it is desired to ensure an advance of the film corresponding to a certain number of teeth without stopping this film, the push-button 50 is kept closed. During this actuation, the motor 4. continues to turn towards the front in order to wind the film, until the push-button 50 is released. When opening the circuit at 50 , the device usually completes a working cycle, and the film is brought into a precise position, which corresponds to the ratchet tooth which the pawl overlaps when the push button is released.
However, the push button can be released during a reverse movement and in this case the direction of motor rotation is reversed, but the motor can stop before the rear face of the ratchet tooth comes on. 'apply against the ratchet.
In order to avoid this inconvenience, it is judicious to press the push-button 50 again after it has been kept closed for an extended period of time.
The details of realization can be modified, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
