<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention 'relates to a washing and drying machine comprising a tank with an upper front door for access to a rotating laundry drum, with a lowered axis parallel to the front, secured to hollow shafts which are mounted. in rubber bearings and which communicate with., a rear hot air box heated and supplied with air by a blower mounted on the base behind the tank next to the drive motor of this tank.
This overall arrangement makes it possible to establish an inexpensive and space-saving machine ensuring the complete laundering of the laundry, including drying, without any intermediate handling of the laundry which remains in the machine from the washing or prewash operation to. at the end of drying.
In addition, the top of the machine can be used to accommodate a laundry basket.
An embodiment of the washing and drying machine is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, of which the two FIGS. 1 and 2 represent views in elevation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
rear and side of the machine body which can be supplemented with various accessories.
The machine is supported by a base 1 which rests on the ground by feet 2. The base supports a tank 3 inside which can turn a perforated drum intended to receive the laundry.
This drum is integral, at the centers of its two lateral faces, with two hollow shafts as indicated in French patent 1,136,981 by the same inventor of November 17, 1955 and these shafts can be carried by sealed bearings in bearings mounted in supports in rubber 5 as described in French patent 1,105,679 by the same inventor of June 3, 1954. One of these shafts is integral with a pulley 6 which is driven by one or more trap ézoïdal belts 7 actuated by a driving pulley 8. This pulley 8 is mounted on the shaft of an electric drive motor 9 and can be coupled with this shaft by a centrifugal powder coupler 10.
In the example shown in the drawing, it has been assumed that the motor 9 is a two-speed motor, for example at 500 and 5000 revolutions per minute; an inverter 11 ensures the change of its direction of rotation.
The water inlet for filling the tank is effected through a pipe 12; a three-way tap 13 allows the entry of water into the tank 3 for filling or the outlet of the water for emptying through line 14. For rinsing, the water outlet of the tank can be done by an overflow device 15 and a conduit 16. The conduits 14-16 lead to a pump 17 which delivers the water through the discharge 18 during the emptying or rinsing by overflow.
The valve 13 is controlled, by means of a rod 19, by an operating handle 20 and it actuates a micro-contact 21 to start the pump 17 when it is in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drain and overflow rinsing positions:
When filling the tank 3, the water rises in a vertical column 22 outside the tank and a float rod 23, protruding from the top of the column, is used to measure the water level in the tank.
At its upper end, the tank has an orifice 24 for the introduction of leachate products and for the exhaust of the drying air.
The heating of the tank and that of the drying air can be provided electrically or by a gas train, for example by a gas train 25; in the example shown, it has been assumed that the same gas train is used for heating the tank and for heating the drying air admitted, in a hot air box 26 which is supplied with air by a blower 27 and which communicates by ducts 28 with the hollow shafts of the laundry drum 4. Between the box 26 and the ducts; 28 are interposed boxes 29 containing a check valve to stop, the foams which go up from the inside of the drum by the hollow shafts during washing.
Above the tub can be provided -He basket for dirty laundry. the interior bottom of which is 'indicated schematically by the line' in phantom 30 in FIG. 2.
The operation of the machine will now be briefly indicated. The introduction of the laundry into the interior of the drum 4 is effected by an upper front door formed in the wall of the tank 3 at the top of the left edge of FIG. 2, while the drum 4 has a sliding hatch at the bottom. usual way. After placing the laundry to be washed in the drum 4 and closing the drum 4 and the cuvé 3, the water is filled by the operation of the handle 20 controlling the tap 13 and the level reached can be monitored by water in tank 3 by observing the rod 23 carrying
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
advantageously an appropriate graduation, which makes it possible to stop the filling at the desired point. The laundry products are introduced through opening 24.
For prewashing or washing, the motor 9 rotates at low speed alternately in both directions, the change of direction being controlled by the inverter 11, while the possible heating of the tank is provided by the gas train 25 or electrically by an immersion heater in the tank.
After a prewash or washing cycle, emptying is carried out by operating the valve 13, the emptying position of which starts up the pump 17. If a prewash cycle must be followed by a washing cycle, the previous operations are repeated for filling and emptying.
To rinse after emptying, the tank is still filled with water by operating the valve 13, but this filling is allowed to continue until emptying through the overflow 15, the filling valve being in the position of. rinsing which ensures the starting of the pump 17 for emptying through the overflow; this maintains the water level in the tank at the height of the overflow outlet. After rinsing, complete emptying can be carried out as explained previously.
When the washing operations have been completed, the washing is carried out (after emptying the tank) by spinning the electric motor 9 rapidly in one direction. Instead of a two-speed motor, one could for this purpose use a single-speed motor with a mechanical speed change device.
After spinning, the inge is dried by starting the blower 27 and the heating of the hot air box 26 with electricity or gas, while the engine
9 runs at slow washing speed, with or without inversion
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
direction of travel. After a while, the laundry is dry, the machine can be switched off and the clean, dry laundry can be removed.
If, for the heating of the hot air box, the gas train 25 is used, suitable precautions can be provided so as not to subject the tank, which is then empty of water, to excessive heating, or by interposing a screen between the tank and the ramp, or by providing a ramp pivoting around its axis so that the flames stop licking the. tank during air heating during drying.
It will be understood that the exemplary embodiment described above and shown in the drawing is in no way limiting and that various modifications, additions or deletions could be provided without departing from the scope of the invention.
In 1'.example described and shown, the coupler. Centrifugal powder 10, interposed between the motor 9 and the drive transmission of the laundry drum 4, ensures progressive start-up by reducing current peaks and playing the role of a torque limiter.
